They said that I would have to go through my insurance to get compensation even though insurance does not cover pest damage, and they refused to refund my rent. Remember, as a general rule, storage rental facilities are largely unregulated which means they can raise your rent with 30 days notice to pretty much any amount they want and they know they have you on the hook because you won't want to relocate your stuff. If you get a quoted price online, lock it in for six month or a year by pre-paying if you can. ALSO remember - you can get your own rental unit insurance from any number of companies for half what the rental unit companies will charge you and bring in proof of insurance at the time you rent (but you MUST do it in person). ALSO ALSO remember - you can also bring your own secure lock and not pay $20 for one of their locks. Do all of the above and any smart reasonable manager or employee is going to make your rental process smooth and painless.

A couple of years later, I stored my things at EZ Storage again in preparation for my next cross-country move (again with free pickup, thanks to a sweet student-moving deal). I'd already landed on the west coast when the moving plans changed from driving to shipping. Ray built a pallet, packed my things onto it, and helped with shipping logistics, for a very very nominal charge. Who does that?! Would I still have all my things without Ray and Sue? Probably... but maybe not. Would I be able to think about moving without flinching? Not a chance. Would I have such faith in humanity and the kindness of relative strangers? A resounding no! From the loading dock I could read the sign for the closest elevator that says it's broken (2-3 weeks now). However, it was only after I had fully loaded a cart and pushed it down the hallway that I discovered the state of the second elevator. We could clearly see an employee was present in the office, but he was not proactive with informing us of the inaccessible state of the building. I could have been spared from loading and reloading the car with 150+ lbs of items. The employee said the second elevator just broke down recently, which could have been fine if it weren't for the fact that the first elevator was not serviced in a timely manner. To add insult to injury, he said one of the elevators was supposed to get fixed today "in the next couple hours" and that he'd call us once it got resolved. Well, it's past 10pm and that didn't happen. Without the elevators, we (and even the employee) are unable to access the second floor. There was a deconstructed couch just sitting by the loading dock, which seemed, potentially, like evidence of another customer who had an issue accessing their unit. Public Storage should notify customers if there are any issues that may impact accessibility to their products and services. To people considering this place, I highly advise taking your business elsewhere. Sure, it seems clean--but at what cost? Would I recommend this business to my enemy? I'm not that cruel.
