Disappointed...and pretty grossed out!
I reserved a unit online and set my move-in date for about a week later. The next day, someone from their office called and wanted to know what time I would be there for move-in. I explained that my move-in date was about a week away and I couldn't give an exact arrival time just yet. He said he would call back...and he did...each day up until two days before my move-in, when I finally told him a time range in which I would arrive (between 10-11:30, after a medical appointment).
I pulled into the parking lot that day at 10:30 and saw a man walking to his car after just hanging a "be right back" sign up on the front door. He must have realized that I was the customer who said they would arrive at that time so he walked back up to the door. Once we got inside he called someone and said he was still there because he "got attacked on the way to his car". Attacked? Not hardly...and I wasn't laughing.
He showed me to the unit (E building) and while I thought it smelled a bit like smoke, I figured I could just put a few air fresheners in my small unit to take care of that problem. I signed the papers and paid in advance for the months that I would need the unit - big mistake.
When I returned a few days later to drop some items off, I noticed the smell was a bit stronger. I thought I would just stop by the office to let the manager know of my concern, but surprise! nobody was there (this was at 2pm on a Saturday).
A few days later (about a week after move-in), I went over to take a few more boxes to the unit and a terrible smell hit me right as I opened the door to the E building. It smelled like animals were being kept somewhere within the building. I could have swore I heard some movement in the units, too. This isn't surprising because when I opened the door to my unit a large rat ran out and down the hallways of the building. I immediately closed the door to my unit, got it in my car, and drove up to the office to speak with someone on-site. At 10am on a Friday morning, surely someone would be there to speak with. Not a chance...
I drove home and stopped by another Public Storage to see if they had units available. Luckily they just had a unit open up so I was told to get my lock from the other unit and bring it over to my new unit. I called the main customer service number after learning this to see how I could get my prepayment back from the original unit. I was told that I could not get it back and I needed to move out that day. How that makes sense I still don't know, but I trekked back to the south side of Indy, loaded up my things and moved them into my new unit downtown.
I cannot begin to articulate the level of disgust and disappointment I feel with this Public Storage location as well as their company's customer service. Do yourself a favor and stay far (FAR!) away from this location unless you're alright with finding some surprises when you open up your unit and not having any on-site property management! read more
