They should take responsibility for their inability to maintain their facility properly. We had been renting an inside, climate-controlled 5x10 space for over 10 months. On 30 January 2025, we went to move our items out of that space and into a 10x10 space. Once we moved the first boxes at the entrance of our locker, we noticed that there were puddles of water on the floor and that it had soaked into our boxes and damaged our items. Numerous items were covered in mold and were ruined. Upon further inspection, it was obvious that water had leaked from the outside door of the facility and leaked across the facility floor into our storage locker. I immediately went to the office and got Patrick, who worked for Public Storage. He took videos and pictures as well, acknowledging that the water had enter from the outside and leaked into our unit. I showed him our damaged items and also provided him additional pictures via text message. He said we would notify Sherrie, the DM and that she would be in touch. This was on 30JAN2025. On 10 FEB, I contacted the Public Storage "WE CARE" line since the Sherrie, the DM had still not reached out to me. On 11 FEB, Sherrie did contact me and said that there is nothing they could do since I did not purchase insurance from Public Storage. My damage was caused because the Public Storage facility did not properly provide environmental protection from the outside elements (rain). Employees should have noticed the water running in from the outside, through the door, and into my unit. If they had done proper checks and maintenance, they could have notified me earlier of possible water leaking into my unit, and we could have prevented this damage. This was not caused by one event. This was caused by numerous events over a period of time. read more

We've used Public Storage several times over the last fifteen years, and they just keep getting better. Everything is now handled on line, from reserving the unit, to getting the security codes, to setting up the monthly payments. On our most recent rental I took care of it all from my recliner in less than 10 minutes. The facility we're using is clean, well lit, and secure. The on-site moving carts are always in great shape. I began using a Public Storage unit at 55 Matthews Drive in 2016 when my wife and I relocated from VA to SC. We have a 10x10 conditioned unit. I write to make potential customers aware of the trick employed by Public Storage once customers are @entrenched". I use the word entrenched because, once one moves into and arranges a unit to his satisfaction, it's no easy matter to relocate. In my experience, Public Storage attracts a customer with a reasonable per-month rate, and then periodically increases such rate by unreasonably large amounts. In my case, my first-year rate was $175. My most recent increase in that rate will take effect on 12/01/2020, making my monthly rate $228. To add insult to injury, the hall light over our unit's roll-up door has been out for years. We've reported this outage many times to PS managers, including to its headquarters, and it has never been repaired. We really can't use our unit unless we bring our own light source. In October I made a reservation for a 10 by 20 storage unit using the Public Storage reservation line available for Hilton Head Island via the web. I made the reservation for the 95 Arrow Road location, Hilton Head South Carolina. There was a flat fee and an admin fee, and we agreed the price, I was sent a confirmation by Public Storage with the agreed price and was told that was all I would need. Just show up on the 3rd and check in with the site staff. Had to check in by 5:00 pm. Even had a confirmation call from the site staff (Patrice) that I simply needed to show, check in. Patrice's description of the check-in procedure was a valid state issued ID like a drivers licence and copy of the reservation paperwork. That's it. That simple. All this agreed with what those taking the reservation communicated. Important to note that those taking the reservation are not those at the site, which is not uncommon with chain retailers, not unusual in any regard. I show on the 3rd and try to check in and was then told by the site staff (Patrice) that I was REQUIRED to buy the Public Storage lock for $25 and since I was storing motorcycles I was REQUIRED to buy their motor vehicle insurance for an additional $11 - so an additional $36 - a price increase of 18% - in feds that to this point had not been communicated as a requirement, neither by those taking the reservation or by Patrice when she called to confirm the check-in dates. I indicated that I had a lock (as is the practice with other self storage locations on Hilton Head Island), so I didn't need a lock and that I have full insurance on both motorcycles and I didn't need any further insurance. I was told by Patrice that none of that mattered - if I wanted to store the bikes with Public Storage I was REQUIRED to pay the $36 - PERIOD. It's important to point out that I have used other public self storage locations on the island and the process is pay the fee, bring your own lock and park the bike - that simple. This was a clear attempt to raise the prices already contracted for by 18%. When asked why I was not informed of these requirements the answer from Partice was "well you should have called me". I reminded her that she had called me twice and failed to mention these additional requirements that were not listed anywhere on the rental confirmation. The response - "you didn't ask". It was 4:30 on Sunday, all location so the island for self storage close at 5:00pm. Patrice indicated "then you'll have to buy the lock and pay the insurance" - a clear attempt to extort $36 from a customer when the terms of the rental had already been agreed. I've got $40K in motorcycles in the parking lot that I have to park somewhere tonight, and she knows that. I pushed back hard - I'm not going to be extorted, even if the amounts are small. I asked to speak to her supervisor - the responses as the same (well rehearsed) - "you should have talked to me - I can't help that the reservations center doesn't tell you these things", then the supervisor's manager (regional manager) - same answer. Clearly they have done this before. Patrice and I continued to disagree on the ethics of the forced extraction of $36. As closing time approached 5:00pm Patrice indicated that there was another location she could send me to that had a "promotion" going and eventually this ended with me paying less that the original contract price, but in a much less secure location, no fence, no controlled access to the storage door areas. I believe this was in response to my unwillingness to be extorted in combination with the approach of time to go home for the site staff. Warning to those who may contract with Public Storage - call the location and ask about hidden fees before you show to store your goods. It's a consumer trap. Better yet, just avoid Public Storage all together. read more

The light in front of my in-laws storage unit has been burned out for over a month. They are in their 80s and the low light makes in impossible to use the unit. My father-in-law has stopped by every week to check to see if it has been fixed but it has not. Folks in the office say they have to wait for the company maintenance guy but apparently he does not come around very often. read more

I do not suggest you rent at Public Storage on Mathews dr. On Hilton Head Island. They are very pushy about buying overpriced boxes and packing supplies. It is very obvious that they follow a sales script. A cardboard box will run you about $5. Your rent is generally raised about 2 to 3 times per year. The last time I was at my indoor ( supposedly climate controlled ) unt, there was a large bucket with a caution sign. Water leaked under my door and ruined all my items stored on the floor. I would also like to warn anyone attempting to move furniture into their unit. There is generally random / abandoned furniture in the hallways. The last time I was there, I ended up smashing my thumb while trying move a large couch over an abandoned dresser. I spoke with the Regional Manager ( Sheri Gamrani) about there negligence and my medical bills, but she just stood there stoned- faced. It looks like my only option is to higher an attorney.
