Would you rent a storage unit like this? Unfortunately, I did not check out the storage units at this Public Storage location (1414 S. Wabash) before I rented the unit and to my surprise, the unit was atrocious, rat-infested, holes in the wall and holes in the floor, and seemed very unsafe. I cannot believe that they rent units in this condition and are charging over $200/month. I assumed the Public Storage would be a professional, clean, and safe environment hence why I did not feel the need to investigate beforehand. After my surprise seeing the unit, I immediately went to the front desk to see if I could see other units and the person at the front desk offered another unit for $240 that also was almost as disgusting as the first one. Definitely not a place where you would store your possessions. I didn't use the unit nor did I move anything in (obviously) and Public Storage still has not refunded me even though I have reached out twice. I ended up moving my things into CubeSmart 407 E 25th St. The service was impeccable, the storage units are secure, safe, and clean. read more

I gave it 2 stars because it is a convenient location. The staff is generally pretty neutral. This is the conversation I had today, having gone in the first time to my "climate controlled" unit for the first time in summer. Me: it's really hot on the 4th floor but I bought a climate controlled unit so what is the climate that I should expect. Them: that floor doesn't have air conditioning. Me: But, it was sold as a climate controlled uni. Them: it's only heat, not air. Only the 6 and 7 floors have air. Me: nobody mentioned that important point when I had the contract conversation. Them: it's all scripted. We expect customers to ask those questions. Ok folks. A business selling climate controlled units expects prospective customers to ask super detailed questions about how the run their business and what climate controlled means? For me, this type of unethical business practice says it all......plus, the elevators often don't work, the lights go down quite a bit and it's expensive. read more

They will lure you with a reasonable storage fee then increase it after you sign a contract. Since February 2023 there have been 2 price increases. I started at $86 per month and now paying $131. Basically a 50% increase. I relocated to another state and will get my things out asap. read more

I came into public storage to purchase moving supplies. This establishment is a superb example of customer service. Upon arrival you are greeted with smiling faces and the clean smell of pine sole. Yes, this place was immaculate. There was not a speck of dust on any of the displays. Maurice graciously left his seat to explain the moving supplies packages that they offer. Then he allowed me some time to make my selection without him being to pushy. On top of that Maurice carried my heavy box of moving supplies to my car. I can not ask for nothing more when it comes to excellent customer service. The packages ranges from $34.99, $59.99, and $100 plus tax. All of the packages come with tape included. Our Public Storage unit is located in the South Loop area. I like it because of its location and security features. You need an access code to enter and exit the parking lot as well as the building. The office personnel are very helpful and friendly. The only drawback I have is that this location is in a prime area and therefore a little pricey. Other than that, it's great for storing holiday decorations and other items you many not have room for in your home or apartment. read more

I experience great customer service I really appreciate all the help from Yvette, although we did experience some technical difficulties and systems malfunction errors which cause us to be on site for over 1.5hrs before we was able to actually get started moving in but with all her help and extra time given the fact she had to stay well over 2hrs past her actually dismal time. :( however she was able to successfully help me get all the kinks works out and I was able to get the unit of my choice which I was thankful for the accommodations and she was definitely a pleasure working within though we had to out source the actual call... hey folks: Would you do business with a company that gives you a quote for a storage unit of $217 a month, but then 5 months later raises it to $268; and then 6 months after that raises it again to $362 a month? (I did the calculation: that is a 66% increase over the course of a single year.) I didn't think so. But that's what you get with Public Storage in Chicago. They will fleece you dry. Be warned. Ask them how often and how much they will raise your rates before you store anything. Better yet, just avoid this outrageous and egregious extortion racket. read more

On a very hectic moving day, Jasmin was extremely kind and competent, going out of her way to help us navigate difficulties unrelated to the facilities. My biggest regret was not walking away from this place day 1. The woman who was working the counter was extremely rude when we called to inquire about storage availability and such. We were down to our last option with them and proceeded anyway. When we showed up, after already getting clarification of what documents were required, we were informed we needed additional documentation housed in a completely different city hours away. After laboriously working through manager approvals and her continued attitude, we obtained a spot. When we attempted to vacate the space (multiple days prior to month end) before their posted closing time, their office was closed early, and they did not answer when knocking or by phone, so we were unable to close the account. We were in an area without service the next several days. When finally getting in touch with them, they told us we had to notify them prior to the end of the month and would now be charged the current month. This is ridiculous and I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

You're required to purchase their lock. I have public storage locks from 2 previous times. But was told they won't work. I need a different kind even though they sell mine at the store. Was told I could use mine but it would not secure the space. But if I wanted to use it, it would look like it was locked. Insurance is another add on. Hourly access is super limited especially on weekends. read more

This place is horrid. The elevator was frequently broken, the rates grew 16% in one year, and the management won't prorate your last months stay if you move out after the 6th (I moved on the 8th). I highly recommend not storing your belongings here as the facilities and service are unprofessional. read more

Staff is friendly here. But I have to write this review to let anyone considering renting a unit here that there are TENANTS living in storage units. Although I find this very sad and can't imagine having to live in a storage unit, it's not acceptable and not safe. I was shocked one morning to see a man and women leave the building who made it obvious they were living there. It is illegal and how can they not know that people are actually living there! Rent anywhere else!!!! I should've followed my first instinct when I walked in and the little rude troll was sitting at the front desk. She showed me two different units both were on high floors and far from the elevator. The "largest" of the unit had a large pole directly in the center. Yet I was quoted $171 for 10"x12" of space. She claimed there were no other units available. Because I was in a hurry, I selected the larger unit even though it had the large pole right in the middle of it. The movers struggled to situate my things properly due to the inconvenience of the pole but finally they got it together. A few months later I receive my storage bill reflecting an increase of my monthly storage fee for $31. I had never received any notice of a possible increase, especially one so substantial after only a few months of storage. I reached out to the "manager" who had no reason for the substantial increase and claimed that tenants were informed prior. I argued that not only is the increase unfair, that I was not notified and definitely would have chosen another storage unit. After speaking to the regional manager and her subordinate - they concluded that after only a few months that I was indeed responsible for whatever building expenses that they have incurred although admitting that none of theses expenses have anything to do with the space or the common areas. There haven't been any upgrades, new systems put in place or anything. Just pay more for the same exact thing for no reason at all. Their attitudes were so uncaring and nonchalant I assure you that I won't ever recommend this place to anyone. I am just going to remove my things as soon as possible and hope that all of my things are the way I left them. I understand that the employees do like to break into units and steal. Save the hassle and keep your peace of mind by renting from someone more reputable. read more

We initially came here because they had a special deal online to get the rent at a very low price. When we signed up for it on their website, it didn't ask for when we would move in date but just for our name and credit card number to hold in that price. SURPRISE! When we decided to go to the store we reserved it for, it said we did not reserve anything and it was the full price of over a hundred dollars a month (but the first month was still $1, of course). No where at the time we reserved the the price or on our recipe we got through our email did it warn us. It did not say at all that this reserve price would only hold for within 2 weeks before it will not be save. We search through the email that said we reserve the unit and nothing showed us that we needed to used it ASAP. We had no choice but to rent from them with their high price. They said to file a complaint but we heard nothing back. The only unit they had for the size we wanted was on the 7th floor which was the very top. That was already a terrible experience. We already knew it was standard that they had us buy a key and insurance for renting out the unit. The location of this public storage is pretty awful. The space to enter can be narrow to get in and out of the small parking lot. The CTA train runs behind the building, so it can be loud at times. Once we picked up our stuff, there was a terrible mess. Apparently, the store thought it was still okay to store people stuff in the unit with no real ceiling but a net and have their dry wall falling apart of our stuff. The staff ALREADY knew the wall was falling apart and debris was falling on unit. They clearly told us that they were repairing the walls but it was a slow process. We happened to have a unit next to the wall that was not being repaired. The only reason the wall was falling apart they said was because the CTA runs. How much safer can this place be please?! Some of our stuff was not tape up or left in bags. All of those stuff that had clothing in it smelt really bad. Every piece of clothing had to be rewashed. Some of the debris went into some of our machines such as a dehumifier and ruined it. I would not recommend this place. I rather go to Lifestorage as they were much nicer and not next to a CTA. They looked like their had a more sturdy building too. read more

I stored my whole life and precious heirlooms at this facility for 6 years. I paid over $16,000 for these thieves to protect my things. They reassured me every 2 weeks that everything was safe as they went through each and every one of my boxes. Please know that the employees are allowed to steal from the storage units, they're allowed to change the locks, and there are no security cameras especially on the 4th floor. I'm a leader in the church and I have a tough time forgiving this behavior. I can continue to report them and I know God has my back. I wouldn't want to be them. read more

VERY DISSATISFIED - i wish I could post this with NO STAR highlighted or 1/2 STAR highlighted. Reason being, we feel lied to - bullied and altogether robbed. After paying (on 8/24/2018) the lien and two months back rent approximately 4 days before the auction date (on 8/28/2018), I was asked for an additional fee for a "lock change" which was not included in the final bill. I called the customer service # who advised me this should not have been done. Since that time, Andres has been harassed about payment - after the payment had been made (we have the phone records) and I, Percy, have been given a district manager's name, whom I learned (three days later) is no longer in that position. After receiving no response from the DM, I was given the regional manager's name, Meghan Arquette, who hasn't returned any of my calls. It appears that she has numerous encounters with other clients who described her performance, for lack of better words, as extremely less than stellar. I was advised of the "lock change fee" after the bill was paid and as of now, I have gate access, but no access to my belongings and no response from the District or Regional Manager and avoidance from the Property Manager, Maurice. Not only had the Public Storage customer service representative via telephone advise me that the direction and approach of the property manager was "outside of the scope" of Public Storage business practice, but some of the discussions which took place were inappropriate as they were unprofessional. A followup letter with dates, occurrences/violations and inappropriate conduct will be sent to the various regulatory and compliance agencies, as well as counsel at the corporate office of Public Storage. My concern is that my belongings/some of my belongings were sold before the time and either they are 1) hoping this will roll into another month, or 2) trying to regroup my belongings before their lock is removed. First: I have seen folks living in the storage area. I have arrived and have seen homeless people in the storage area, some with their phones hooked up to charge, and some leaving in the morning, I suppose to go to the soup kitchen. Second: they are a very unfriendly bunch. The Manager whose name I believe is Morris, has the shortest fuse, can't ask him questions without him clearly showing he is irritated by your questions, and if you ask followup questions and try to understand whatever you are inquiring about, his irritations discourages you from continuing the conversation. Just not a customer friendly office. Three: I had a storage unit where the plaster on the wall crumbled due to evidently water leakage which damaged several of my art I had stored in the unit. When i told them about it, they just ignored it. Four: the elevators are often not working. There are two elevators. Only one goes to the basement and so you should pray that the one going to the basement isn't the one broken! Five: The yearly increase in rent is like clockwork and the more than 20% or so increase in rent per year is simply outrageous. They figure until the cost of hiring movers to a new storage place isn't cost effective you are stuck and will pay what they ask. Very unethical in that respect. read more

WORST EXPERIENCE WITH ANY BUSINESS IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!! You will absolutely HATE IT HERE!! Do yourself a favor and go with literally anyone else! If I could rate a zero or in the negatives I would because I just can't say enough awful things about this place but just to state facts: -The elevator has been on and off broken for a FULL YEAR -The automatic sliding doors look like they have bullet holes in them and have also been broken for MONTHS-you have to slide the doors open with your fingers! -The manager is the rudest most incompetent person I've ever met in my life, no idea what he does all day since this place is in the most disgusting condition I can imagine -The gate to the property currently does not operate outside of business hours which is why I had to finally terminate my lease. My business being Pharma sales, I literally could not do my job because this place stopped letting me access my samples before 930am! -Also, there is no access to dumpsters or garbage of any kind. So if you plan on renting a locker for work in sales, you can't discard any empty boxes here or the lazy manager will attempt to increase your rent -There is definitely blood in one of the stairwells that has been there for months -There are definite homeless people living in the units but they're nicer than the employees so that was actually the 'highlight' of my experience -Facility is all around filthy and no adequate lighting at night, dangerous -Over the course of just a few months, my rent from $120 per month to $140! They claimed it was to accommodate the 'complaints' of their customers for all the broken items around the property but not a single thing has been fixed!! -Corporate hq is just as terrible as the mgmt here. There was literally no one for us to contact regarding the horrid conditions here so we went to yelp to at least warn future renters So, if you enjoy being miserable every time you need to access your locker then go for it, but the lockers directly across the street (extra space & self storage) are CHEAPER, not to mention cleaner, safer, and just all around more pleasant. I hope this review helps so you don't make the same mistake I did and get stuck in an awful lease! read more

Pos: Convenient, friendly staff are willing to do a lot to help with your storage needs. The gate/access hours are great and the rates are not terrible. I've used this location on two different occasions. The facility is clean, and the additional carts they provide are easy to use. Neg: The second time I purchased a unit here I experienced a slew of issues. The elevators at this location are atrocious, one of them is always broken, and the other can sometimes stop working for periods of time. The staff have tried to have it repaired time and time again but nothing has changed. The bigger issue, and final "nail-in-the-coffin" happened one night when I showed up late (but before gate-closing hours) and attempted to access my things. When I tried to get into the gate, the code they had provided me didn't work. I called the customer service hotline and had no help. When I told them I wanted reparations for this, they told me that they would have to review this on a case-by-case basis. I needed my things that night, and the simple fact that they were held hostage was inexcusable! I hope that the people working for PS go somewhere else, they don't deserve to be held back by this horrible location. read more

I complained to corporate and they insisted its my fault there gate is broken and that I owe this starting 4.3.16 for another month when I wouldn't have if the gate was working properly ! The disrespect from the worker at the desk to the 800 number was totally unprofessional!! I wouldn't recommend anyone who is about anything to or have dignity to not use this facility ! Unbelievable. I don't even know where to start. This place is doing literally nothing right. The gate is constantly broken...if you're not there during office hours (which are 930-5, impossible for people working real jobs) you're not getting in. Even if you get past the first gate, good luck prying the broken doors open with your fingers. Take the stairs as I've been trapped on the elevator multiple times, but watch out for the dried blood. Wear old clothes and shoes as this place is generally covered in a few layers of grime. My locker didn't even close all the way; it jammed and it was a battle to open/close each time. On top of all of this, the staff is not even friendly or helpful. I can't imagine what they do all day as nothing has been fixed in over a year. All they do is raise your rates without warning. Extra Space is storage is $50 cheaper and far better...you've been warned. read more

Horrible place. They don't clean or mop floors. The whole facilty smells stale and smells like cigarettes. The customer service there is horrible and rude and very unhelpful. They have numerous homeless people living in units. I had a unit at Public storage at 1414 s wabash for a year , I constantly smelled cigarette in and around my unit . Than one I day find out there was someone living in the unit next to mine smoking ciggs. I instantly told the front desk and they gave me another unit. A week later I find out they charge me A 30 dollar move in feee and raised my monthly payment by 100%. Which is ridiculous! I called and inquired and no one were able to give me a refund or credit back . Fast forward today I go to my unit and find another homeless person living right next to my unit . That was the last straw. Today is August 8th. I asked if I can I immediately move out and get refunded because of the inconvience of moving from unit to unit , and the front desk lady was rude and very unhelpful as if he hated her job! I'm a customer and I don't feel like an appreciated customer. They take your money and give you 0 customer service. The building is very unsecure, and there is numerous people just hanging out in there unit and laying down on there beds. What kind of business are you guys running ?!?! Where is the management ? I was waited on by Sharonda. She was so friendly and knowledgeable. I was pleasantly surprised to find out she has only been employed there for a few weeks! The manager was Maurice and he was also super friendly! He also went out of his way to assist me with having a cart available to me after hours that evening. The facility is clean and well lit. The only negative is that the carts are locked up after the staff is gone for the day. Sadly, I was told this is due to prior thefts of the carts, but the 5 star service would make me recommend this facility to anyone searching. read more
