I've been a customer at the Deering Ave Extra Space Storage location in Canoga Park for over a year…read moreand a half, and until recently I would have given this facility a much higher rating. The site itself has generally been clean and well maintained, and the on-site manager has always been helpful whenever I've needed assistance. My issue is with a sudden and significant change to access hours that was communicated with little notice and no explanation. I received an email stating that, effective June 8, access hours were being reduced from 10:00 PM to 8:00 PM every day. One of the primary reasons I chose Extra Space in the first place was the extended access hours. The ability to access my unit until 10:00 PM was a major selling point and a competitive advantage over many other storage providers. I called the facility after receiving the email. The manager told me he wasn't aware of the change and would need to contact corporate for more information. Unfortunately, I never received a follow-up call or any explanation as to why the hours were reduced. What makes this even more frustrating is that other nearby Extra Space locations in Canoga Park, Woodland Hills, and Chatsworth still appear to offer access until 10:00 PM. That makes it difficult to understand why this particular location is being treated differently. It's also summer in the San Fernando Valley. Temperatures can easily exceed 100 degrees during the day. Many customers intentionally use their storage units in the evening when it's cooler and more practical to move items. Reducing access by two hours has a real impact on customers' ability to use the facility. I'm not upset that policies can change. I'm frustrated that a major feature that influenced my decision to rent here was removed without any meaningful explanation, and that no one has been able to provide a clear reason for the change. If Extra Space wants to maintain customer trust, they should be transparent about why access hours were reduced and explain whether this is a temporary or permanent change.

I returned a cart I borrowed, but the lobby door was locked and no one answered after knocking multiple times. I went to the main entrance--still no staff in sight. This went on for about 15 minutes. When an employee (Black male with long dreadlocks) finally opened the door, he was rude and told me to use the main entrance next time--with attitude. When I calmly asked why he was upset, he just yelled, "Have a nice day!" Very unprofessional. I stayed polite the whole time, but the service was disappointing.

I found a slightly larger locker at Public Storage, just around the corner, for $15 per month. Granted that is an introductory rate, but even if they double it after the introductory period, we will be at $30, which is still less than half price! On top of that, they never answer their phones for existing customers. I had to call as a new customer to finally get ahold of them. Bad service bad pricing! I don't recommend them!

There are plenty of other storage places where you would be working with decent management and people who will not try to overcharge you. They have also told me I am no longer allowed to rent a unit online, as the accounts clearly offer with a large button that says "add a new unit" and has the prices listed for each unit. So they charge random fees because they want to and do a bait and switch for units they offer online. Not to mention the raising prices every 6-12 months.

The facility itself is clean, well-maintained, climate-controlled (which I love), and feels very secure, which was a big priority for me. No weird storage-unit vibes. This company cannot be trusted. They will increase your rent by 29% at a time and will not reward…read morecustomer loyalty. 29% increase is egregious price gouging! Public Storage's idea of customer retainment is the opposite of just all businesses in existence! They will keep increasing your rent despite the fact that it will reach a point where they charge more than double of what any of their competitors charge. Now they want to charge me $525 for a 10x10 unit when I can go get a 10x20 unit from several of their competitors for half of the price. And I can get a 10x10 elsewhere for less than $190 if I wanted to get another 10x10 unit. If you already rent from them, make sure to not use automatic payments because they are relying on customers that don't pay attention. This is not ok and it most definitely IS price gouging! I've paid them around $30,000 so far since I've been a customer and they don't seem to value the approx $5,000 that I've paid them every year! Loyal customers are of no value to Public Storage! You can save thousands of dollars a year by going to one of their competitors and the fact of the matter is that Public Storage does not offer anything that their competitors don't. In fact, some of their competitors do more than just charge half the price of Public Storage. Some of these same half priced units are even climate controlled, when Public Storage isn't climate controlled at their price gouging prices. Climate controlled 10x10 units at their competitors for less than $200! Every single competitor in the area costs less than half of what Public Storage costs! Be wise with your money! There are plenty of options and, unfortunately , Public Storage, does not seem to value loyal customers! You will find more value elsewhere! I guarantee it!
