My friend and I were on our way back to Boston to catch our flight home to California and stopped by Providence Bicycle because our goal is to run a marathon in every state as well as ride a bicycle. I rarely comment but I ordered a bike for over $800 on May 2 and I was told it would be there within a couple of days. However, I called weekly and was told various stories about it being enroute but that never was true. Each time I spoke with someone, they kept telling me it was going to be here tomorrow which never happened. A month later, it never came and I had to ask for a refund. Very saddened because I wasted a month of not riding and my time. Also, I love supporting local businesses but I couldn't in this instance. I hope things change. read more

I purchased a new Giant Cypress 2 bike in mid October. Lou helped with a proper fitting to help avoid knee, low back and neck pain from the bike I was riding. Unfortunately there was an issue with a knocking sound with every rotation of the peddles. They took the bike back twice, picking it up from my house the second time. They were determined to fix it and they did. Everyone who I came in contact with treated me with respect. Jimmy, Sergio, Noah, Barak and Jake. Lots of knowledge there. I was stranded on the other side of Providence from my home, because my wheel had mysteriously fallen off my bike, and I could not seem to get it reattached myself, so I called Providence Bicycle. I've been a customer for at least 13 years, and have always trusted them with my bike needs. They actually sent someone out to my location, where I was stranded, and they fixed my bike, and even helped me with securing the cargo on my bike. Have mixed feelings about this place. Came here one day looking for a riding bike. The salesman was really knowledgeable and pretty polite; although I got vibes from him that the politeness wasn't super genuine. Told him I wanted to see their selection, and I guess the fact that I wasn't planning on buying anything that day put him in a sour mood. Asked if I could keep a bike I was interested in on hold, and he said, "A deposit is required to hold a bike." Funny how the next day, I went to NBX bikes in Providence and told them about the whole deposit situation. They said that only makes sense if you want to buy a super expensive bike (1K or more), which wasn't the case for me. This place didn't have many sales or promotions that I knew about from the salesman that first visit. Found out through my first check-in with Yelp here that I could get 10% off any apparel item. Came in the next day and was taken care of by a woman. She let me know that there's a 10% discount on helmets when you purchase a bike with them. Plus, she was just super nice and genuine. Wish I knew about the helmet discount the day before, so I wouldn't waste time searching online for deals. There's a large parking lot in the back to test drive bikes. It's a mix of smooth, bumpy with pot holes, and a little up hill. You get a nice idea of how the bike works in different types of terrain. Overall, I'm hesitant to recommend this place to anyone. Wasn't treated with genuine respect, the information was different depending on the salesperson, and just felt like giving business to someone else who was much more deserving of it. I brought my specialized enduro there for an internally routed dropper post since I had a hell of a time running the cable on my own. They were unable to complete saying that my frame was not compatible with internal routing, which it IS. I took it home and did some quick research, finding out that the routing hole is hidden by a cable connector so I had it done within a half hour of bringing it home. I can't blame them for not knowing their own product since they didn't charge me. BUT the mechanic loosely installed the seat mount bolts because when I took the bike off my roof when I got home, one of the two bolts was about to fall out and the other one did..$32 for the replacement titanium bolt from manufacturer after shipping. THANKS prov bike, good work. Update, Providence Bike was nice enough to reach out to me after this encounter and apologize with a gift card. Good move on their part considering the other shops in the area..I will continue to use this shop read more

Yesterday, I bought my first road bike here on sale, previously used. The attendant made me feel like I was getting a good bike at a good price. He was the reason I decided not to continue shopping elsewhere. He was simply awesome. He came off as honest and helpful. Downfall: I had a flat the next morning after riding a couple hundred feet and I bought the bike yesterday. I called about repair and this snarky girl answered, explaining that the repair wasn't free. I said I understood that I was to buy a new tire but to pay for the service didn't seem right. She went on to insist that the service was $8 and that "the world is a scary place." I did not appreciate this soulless, arbitrary response. All she had to say is they are not liable for flat repair. I wasn't looking for a free ride, just a little sympathy over bad luck. On the upside, turns out the real problem was that after pumping up the wheel while they serviced my bike for sale, they forgot to put the cap back on the valve. providence bicycle would have gotten five stars if not for the valve cover oops and the poor customer service post-purchase. read more

After months of window shopping, test riding, and saving, I finally bought a new road bike at Providence Bicycle. And the experience was awesome. Over the course of a week I browsed the inventory, got professionally fit, was assisted in selecting 5ish bikes matching my fit and budget, had all 5 adjusted to my measurements, test rode them on some gnarly hills, and finally selected the perfect one. As you can imagine, this process took a lot of time and energy on both ends! And I'm grateful for the dedicated service. Prov Bike was the last shop I checked out. Some local shops had the customer service but not the inventory, some had the inventory but not the customer service, and Providence Bicycle had it all. Communication was excellent. People were honest. I truly felt that it mattered to them that I leave with a bike I truly loved. A great buying experience. Easy to set up a payment plan. And generous with discounts on the bike (last season's model) and on any new gear bought with the bike. My only gripe is that it's still an expensive shop. I rarely stop in because any and all gear can be found cheaper elsewhere or online. But look no further if you're looking to buy a new bike. ps. to Adam who complained about the shop not being open on Saturday, it's because the owner observes the Jewish sabbath. The hours are consistent and posted online. They are open until 8 most days, which makes the shop accessible despite the Saturday closing. read more

Recently, Providence Bicycle has improved its Service Department; they maintain an unrivaled inventory of components frequently refreshed. They're already the area's lowest with a Price Guarantee Policy; many parts are listed cheap on-line, but good luck actually try to buy them, then return when it's not what you ordered. Nice to buy from a store with a reputation and local presence, where you can try on or try out. The combination of great inventory and well trained service force does make them faster but much in demand. Yet they'll still fix a flat while you wait. And they can handle difficult stuff like shock maintenance. So, when you're all thumbs and want your bike to be a friend rather than a danger, pick one of the countless models of mountain and road bikes they have in stock and/or get a real technician to precisely do your repairs. And they are open all day, including Sundays. read more

I've had several experiences at the Providence branch. The first was shopping for a new bike, and the staff was very helpful and answered all my questions without any pushy salesmanship. The second involved a tune-up for my race bike, which went very smoothly. The third involved gluing a set of tubulars, and on this occasion they really shined. I made the mistake of trying to remove the glue from an old wheel with some citrus-based degreaser, and it took a few hours for them to remove it. They were transparent and made sure I was aware of the cost for removing the old glue. When I picked them up, they informed me that they had made a mistake about the cost of the labor, but they generously billed me at the initial rate they had quoted. They also threw in a truing at no cost. I really appreciate the professionalism, honesty, and friendliness here, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a shop in the Providence area. read more

Brought my jogging stroller in for a flat tire after my husband had already attempted to fix it. Everyone was so nice. They found and fixed the problem within minutes, filled up the rest of my tires with air and sent me on my jogging way. I will say the repair was a little costly given it literally took less than 5 minutes ($17), but still worth it for me as a stroller with a flat is useless and I had a great experience here. Ok, so I've been comming here for years and over the course of my time shopping here I've probably spent over $25k. I only ride cannondale and up until this year I have only bought my complete bikes and parts from prov. bicycle. Last time my fiancé and I went to the warwick location we were treated like a couple of assholes by one of the salesman, this guy watched us waiting for an associate for about 25 mins while he check out another customer and made chit chat about Lincoln woods trails while we stood there less than 5 feet away. After he was finished he just walked into the back and we didn't see him again, without even acknowledging the fact that he saw us standing there waiting. We walked out and haven't been back. Today I decided to give them another chance, big mistake. I asked about a set of handlebars for my bike, the salesman told me they were $160.00, I told him the same pair was online for $34.50 and I didn't understand why they were so much at prov. bicycle. He then told me that he doesn't have to explain their pricing to me and then suggested that I buy them online if I don't like their price. We will be taking our business elsewhere from now on, this place needs to do some market research on pricing and really needs to rehab their customer service practices. read more

These guys were super-helpful when I had to pack my bike for shipping on a Sunday after working in Providence for two weeks. They boxed up my bike for $50. Shipping was going to be $100 through whatever service they use, but I went to shipbikes.com and managed to save $50 by pre-paying them for a label. This shop is closed on Saturdays, which means that all the weekend business is jammed into Sundays. I truly respect the owner's commitment to observing their holidays, but believe that in order to make it work, they need to be fully staffed on Sundays. The people who are there, while not overly attentive, are definitely extremely knowledgable once you jump up and down and flag their attention. The prices are higher than I've seen in Boston, but they have an adequate assortment of bikes (even if they don't carry my bike's brand) and will custom make a tri-bike for you for a small investment. Also, once you get their attention, they are (mostly) all yours, giving you the time that you need to try out adjustments or a new feature (in my case new pedals). Generally, I don't think there is a much of a market for bicycle shops in town, so while I'm in RI for awhile, it will do. read more

I gave them two stars because I bought my current bike there. However, I have given the shop a low rating because the more I have used bike mechanics in my new home (Oakland,CA) the more I realize how much I have been cheated by Providence Bicycle. For example, every time I got a flat on my bike the mechanics would suggest getting a whole new tire. Other times I would go in for a tune up and the mechanics would point out other problems with the bike, which would be fine, but every time I would go in I would spend close to a hundred dollars... and I would go in often. It was like going to some quack auto mechanic you would see on a 60 Minutes. Anyway, they are very helpful if you are looking to buy a new bike but other than that I would suggest going elsewhere for bike work. read more

I will be the first to admit that I have zero knowledge about bikes/cycling. My dad wanted some bike gloves and a chain cleaner for his birthday, and a co-worker recommended that I come here. I stopped by on a Tuesday afternoon and got great helpful service from two different employees. I wasn't sure what size gloves to get my dad and they were really helpful, even trying them on themselves to demonstrate how they fit and letting me know that he could exchange them if they didn't fit him. I started my bike search before the winter, going to both PB locations and most of the local competitors to see the selections in person, learn about the different brands and get to know the staff. This would be my first brand new bike and was looking for a place to go back to for future service, parts etc and not just a bike. I got the best vibe from PB so when I was ready to buy, I decided to stop there first. I went back down to the warwick store where they had a great deal on a leftover cannondale. I didn't feel pushed with them and they were very patient. I was probably a pain with lots of questions and they still stayed a little later than closing to take care of me. They went the extra mile to help me fix my older bike which was awesome. There is definitely some value of getting properly fit on a bike. After being fit on the bike and riding it, the feel is very comfortable. I have only spent a limited amount of time on the bike with the weather, but so far so good! The bike is a blast to ride!
