It was around 8:00a early in the day and the cafe only had one other party in the dining room. The cafe had a nice, clean, cozy interior with a casual atmosphere. The menu offered a variety of classic American dishes and comfort food favorites. We ordered a couple of 2-egg breakfast plates, one with bacon and the other with sausage. There was something quaint about Prospector Café that I really enjoyed. Perhaps it was that there were so few people there on a Friday evening, which made for a slightly more intimate experience. Or maybe it was the unique décor with old wood paneling and western pictures that totally set the vibe. Whatever it was, it worked. The menu was also just right-Goldilocks would have loved it...not too small, not too robust. There was a little something for anyone, without being over the top. I gravitated toward the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy-comfort food. The flavor of everything was pretty good, although the timing of bringing things to the table was off. My meal came out 3-5 minutes before my dining partner's did, so by the time I dove in (I'm not a jerk, I waited), it was not hot. Overall, for the price, it was a good experience. This cafe is located in the red garter hotel. When you first walk in you are a little in shock, the casino is old and not very flashy. However the little cafe inside actually has decent food at great prices! I've had several different sandwiches ( club on sourdough is my favorite) burgers, salads and cheese Enchiladas, all great tasting! And the portions are quite big for the price. The club sandwich is like two sandwiches plus you get fries. It's like that saying goes, don't judge a book by its cover. Also the casino is nice because it's not crowded. So the best value at a casino restaurant is the Prospector Cafe. 13.99 for Chicken fries steak and eggs. 3 eggs any way, country potatoes and plate size chicken fried steak with either white or brown gravy. Utah Traveler Red Garter and the Prospector Cafe was usually the go-to for breakfast for early arrival from our no-fun state. Not any more! The food is just barely decent, though the service is generally good. Coffee and sodas have no refills! It is not stated on their menus and no apologies for not mentioning anything about it beforehand. Waitress stated it was the managers instructions. Well, manager, you have lost the business of four adult visitors!! In fact, your casino business is dead as well! You literally have nothing going on! I've eaten here a couple of times. It's been a while though, so this latest visit revealed many changes to their layout. The dining room had been remodeled and there was apparently a breakfast buffet on Saturday when we went. The buffet had a made-to-order omelet station that appeared to be popular. I didn't try the buffet but rather ordered from the menu. I chose the build your own omelet which came with hashbrowns and toast of your choice. I also got hot tea for my beverage. The omelet included fresh mushrooms and tomato as I requested. The hashbrowns were cooked well and not too crunchy. The sourdough toast was dry as ordered and had good flavor. First off the price is right. Rather than spending $30 per person at the buffet, you can get an okay meal for around $7-$15 a person. I ordered the blackened prime rib which came with your choice of soup or salad, vegetables, fries or mashed potatoes, and bread. Seemed like a good value for $13.95. I ordered the chicken noodle soup, and fries for my sides. The chicken noodle was pretty good after adding salt and pepper, the bread was warm and came with butter, that ended up being good, the fries were under cooked and soggy, and the prime rib was so disappointing! It was so flavorless, very dry, and super fatty. If you do chose to come here maybe try something else. I've had the French dip before which was better than the prime rib for sure, but for the flavor and quality of food you get, I don't find myself wanting to come back here anytime soon. read more

We pulled into RV park and decided we would get a bite to eat before setting our rig up. We had three different places to chose from so we picked the closest since we were walking. We started with a mimosa and Bloody Mary. Now this is a casino. How could you not make a great Bloody Mary? The mimosa was tasty but warm. We ordered dinner salads but they had no blue cheese. We've been to the Prospector three times: twice for the buffet and once, mid-week, ordering breakfast off the menu. The breakfast buffet is just ok -- though judging by the popularity you'd think it was the best thing going. The food is plentiful but honestly overcooked and rather bland. Before giving up on the Prospector we tried a regular breakfast midweek and were very pleasantly surprised. The portions were generous, the service attentive, and the food itself quite good. There was a time that the Red Garter's "Prospector Grill" was known for how good their Burrito Grande was. My mom and dad used to stop in religiously whenever going through Wendover just to split a burrito. This trip I was with my mom and she suggested we go their to see if it had changed since it was purchased by another corporation. I ordered the burrito and mom ordered chile rellenos. It seemed somewhat odd that it took them so long to cook our order, because there were only about 5 tables of customers, and their service ended up not being very good. I got my burrito and took a bite of one corner. The flavor was okay, but nothing to write home about. The next bite was a little further into the burrito and the shredded beef was dry and super, super tough. So I thought I would open the burrito up and try to shred the beef a little better. As I opened one end up I came across a large chunk of fat, and the beef was so tough it wouldn't even shred. About the middle of the burrito was a large chunk of beef and when I tuned it over with my fork I about lost what little food I had in my stomach. The large chunk of beef contained a multiple beef arteries. I immediately waved down our server and showed her what my burrito consisted of. I told her I would not eat that, and she asked if I wanted another burrito. Knowing how tough and bad the beef was, and how I had immediately lost my appetite, I told her that I would pass, and that I would not be paying for that meal. The waitress took the bill, that she had already placed on our table, and removed the meal from it. At no time did the waitress, or a manager, offer an apology, or show any compassion for what had been served. I am rating this restaurant with one star, only because I can't rate it any lower. read more

This place was terrible. I've been here before and it wasn't bad but they let this place go downhill. The buffet was cold, the service was awful, and the food subpar. I asked for maple syrup, which is given in little plastic cups, and the waiter literally turned around and grabbed it off of an unbussed table! I got someone else's used syrup cup. When I asked for a new one, the waiter told me this was was still good. Just. No. I asked to speak to a manager and there wasn't one. In the whole restaurant there wasn't even someone for me to complain to except the supervisor in the kitchen. After all this, and almost an hour of waiting for our food after we ordered, we found a hair in one of the plates of French toast. Decided we wanted diner style food after watching a concert at the Peppermill Concert Hall. Compared to another at the other end of the Wendover strip it was a better price for the same style of food and it we thought the over all taste was better. I had the shrimp and crab omelette which was served with a holandaise sauce. Even though it was artificial crab the omelette was still very satisfying. Others had a build yourself omelette and a ribeye steak dinner. The steak was served slightly over cooked from what was requested but was still a good cut of meat. Service was slightly slow but I've noticed that's everywhere you go in Wendover. Overall we will probably come eat here when we come to Wendover from now on. read more
