The food here isn't 5-Star cuisine but this is the only place to get something hot to eat on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays if you are staying in Union Creek, OR just outside of Crater Lake. We found Prospect Cafe while traveling through the area on vacation. We were hungry and just happened to find it on Yelp. I am glad we did. The food and service were amazing. They served one of the best southern chicken fried steak I've ever had and that's coming from a Texan! Our only wish would be that we lived closer to this place because the food was so great. Ensure you have time on your hands when eating here. This store was nearly empty (one other customer) and it took 45min to get food. The tables appeared clean but everything felt sticky. The server did not appear to enjoy her job. She rolled her eyes with everything we asked even with our order which was off the menu- asked if she could make change for $100 bill when paying and you'd think we were taking out a kidney! Food was less than desirable. It was palatable but nothing to write home about and still can't figure out why it took so long. Perhaps they run on "prospect time"? Stayed at the motel next door. Spent a full day visiting Crater Lake and hiking the nearby falls. I was so thirsty and ran out of drinks in the room. Decided to get dinner with my companion, especially something to drink. Upon entering the restaurant, it didn't seem that busy. Sign says to seat yourself. Most tables had dirty dishes that needed to be cleared away . The waitress had just cleared and wiped down a table and in the process of clearing the table next to it. Couldn't decide which table, but she pointed out that the first table was ready, so that's the one we sat at. She was busy serving food to customers that were there. A group of 4 came in and sat at the other table. Some other people came in and sat at a table behind us..after the waitress quickly cleared that table. Meanwhile, no water was brought out to us The waitress went and took the order for the group of 4 that came in after us. She went and tended the other group behind us. She brought out food for other people. Meanwhile, I was thirsty as all get out! She finally came and took our order. There wasn't anything that looked vegan friendly. I was going to order a hamburger without the burger. My companion was going to order fish and chips, found out that's just available on Fridays. He got a grilled cheese sandwich with fries and a coke. I ended up ordering just a diet Coke..I lost my appetite. My companion forgot his phone in the room and went to get it, took his time about it. By the time he got back, our order still hadn't arrived. I finally went up and asked if we could get our drinks. If I could have gotten my drink to begin with, I would have been in a better mood. She brought our order over, I had a few fries and they were lukewarm. Bad experience for my birthday. I felt bad for her, she was the only server. Someone from the bar side came over to clear tables it just seemed really unorganized. We would have been a quick in and out. Don't judge this place by the outside (or inside for that matter). Go in and get served by the nicest lady and get some classic breakfast food. It was a two woman show in there so expect to wait if it's busy but it's good breakfast and a friendly atmosphere. We were staying nearby and popped in for dinner twice. Had a great time sitting at the bar chatting with some colorful and friendly locals. And wow the food!! Absolutely delicious and great quality! We loved the French dip, the beef patty smothered in mushrooms, onions & gravy with homemade mashed. The next night had an excellent cheeseburger (fresh, not frozen!) on a big soft bakery bun and also some tasty chicken tenders. Very nice pie for dessert. Stopped in here after a long day at Crater Lake. We got checked into our hotel and decided to find some food. Great little cafe! The server was very friendly. I had the chef salad and my wife had a burger. We both really enjoyed the quality and taste. Food was prepared quickly. This is a good little cafe. It is also a favorite of the locals. While we were eating there were a few folks who came in and struck up conversations with each other. It was clear they knew each other from town and that the server and staff also knew them as well. We like these kinds of places because: 1) if it's food enough for the locals, it is usually good, and 2) we like being around folks that all know each other in these friendly environments. Stayed in Prospect for the night, and stopped at the cafe's adjacent saloon, the Trophy Room, for a drink. The sign on the front of the cafe door should have deterred us. It read: "In accordance with bureaucratic tyranny regarding regulation of private business, we are required by OSHA to post notice that masks are "required." However, we are in violation of other regulations regarding civil rights and dispensing medical advice by requiring specific behavior of anyone in order to be our guest here. So: This notice is posted to fulfill the absurd requirement to post an unenforceable notice. Incidentally, we suspect that anyone coming in here to rob the place would probably conceal his/her/their identity with a mask... Wear a mask if you feel that it is in your best interest for your health. (We have video surveillance.)" I don't know about you, but I don't trust a restaurant that thinks that OSHA health guidelines amount to "tyranny," or the suggestion that there's no way a private business could be capable of enforcing mask guidelines (which weren't even in effect at the time, incidentally). I also don't appreciate the veiled threat to mask-wearing customers. Anyway, we went into the bar against our better judgment. It was a little messy, with chairs pushed against the walls, but there were two pool tables and a handful of casino games, so we decided to say and play a game. There was a back patio with a friendly, fat old dog. The drinks were fine, but while we got them, we noticed that among all the taxidermy on the wall was the face of the Oregon governor (Kate Brown), poorly photoshopped onto a photo of Nazi flags, and framed with a toilet seat. Okay then. Looked to the TV and saw that they were airing - without apparent irony - the One America News Network, a "news" platform dedicated to conspiracy theories. This review is more for the Trophy Room and lounge. This local, watering hole has animal mount all over the walls. Some pretty cool things. Bear, moose, deer, elk and a mixture of other things. We were going to sit at the bar and have a drink prior to heading back to the RV but there was a foul mouthed man sitting at the bar that didn't have a grip of the English language. Well maybe the 5th grade! I couldn't believe my ears and there were woman in the room!! I guess you can't fix stupid. I'll pass on this place again. It needs to be cleaned, dusted, scrubbed and disinfected. The best part of this place was the nice lady bartender and the table games. New da and we went to the Cafe today for lunch. This little local cafe is a hole in the wall type dive that is serving up some mighty great food. Our server Valerie was a great help and a great spirit at this joint. I had the beef vegetable soup and a mushroom hamburger with tater tots. Sara had a cheeseburger and tots. This was the best hamburger I've had since leaving Florida. It was almost as good as Hobos in North Palm Beach, FL. I recommend trying this spot out if you are ever in Prospect. Just stay out of the bar. We were nearby hiking and decided to eat here because it was the closest restaurant. The person who served us was kind and friendly. We got the kids corn dogs from the kids menu, husband got hamburger and I got a chicken meal. Everything was plentiful, hot and delicious. Typical American cafe. They had a shelf with books, crayons and construction paper for the kids. The books were for adults. Thought that was unique. You can tell this is a mom and pop small town dinner. What a unexpected surprise. The outside doesn't look like much but we like trying new places while traveling in our RV so we stopped in. We stayed on the restaurant side so can't speak about the bar but it was so good. We ordered the BLT, grilled ham and cheese, bacon burger, club sandwich, chef salad and the beef stew (yes we order a lot for lunch and dinner the following day). Everything was so good. The salad was super fresh. The soup was obviously homemade and it was my favorite. My husband raved about the club sandwich but the burger was outstanding too. Look past the weird decorations and dated look because you are missing out if you skip this place. read more

The cafe has new owners but the menu has not changed much nor has the food. My hamburger had lb of beef, lettuce, onion, pickles, tomato and sauce. It good. The clam chowder was so-so. Gone are all the stuffed animals; replaced by hunting or wildlife prints. read more

After visiting Crater Lake, we decided to drive thru this tiny town on our way to Medford and see if there was a good place for lunch. Three of us ordered cheeseburgers with fries and one bowl of clam chowder. While the clam chowder was tasty, it was a tad heavy with potato. On the other hand, the cheeseburgers were da bomb!!!! The meat was cooked perfectly. Tender and juicy. The bun & condiments were fresh. Absolutely delicious! The only reason I gave it four stars was we each ordered a Coke or Diet Coke and no refills were offered. I also asked about pie flavors when we first ordered, but she never followed up. That's OK, I was way too full after that luscious burger. We would definitely return for burgers. read more

This is definitely an example of a country cafe - meaning that a lot of the locals eat here & use this place as a hang out. The cafe side of this establishment doesn't have any taxidermy animals - I'd suspect that the taxidermy stuff would frighten any children that would visit otherwise! The cafe side had a small staff the day I visited - just a hostess and the cook. I had to eat outside because I had a dog with me. They had an empty half of a milk jug outside for dogs, and a local man offered to fill it up with some water for my dog, which was very nice. I was told that the single hostess couldn't really easily accommodate outside diners, so I placed the order inside (she did bring the food out to us). The sprinkler system came on for the outdoor plants while we were sitting there & we got misted with the water because the outdoor seating is very close to the plants. Thankfully we hadn't yet received our food or that would've been more unpleasant. The food itself was quite good! The salad actually was really surprising because it contained delicious pickled beets, freshly grated carrots, and mixed greens (no iceberg here!). My partner got the chili cheese burger, which was so large that it really could've been shared between 2 people. I got the mushroom swiss burger, and the buttered & grilled bun really helped the burger shine. The chocolate malt milkshake was also delicious. I'm knocking off a star for the automatic plant waterer being timed to come on during business hours - meaning that anyone sitting outside will get misted; as much as I appreciate the misting on a hot summer day, I don't think I'd like getting water all over my food. I also am knocking off another star for something that confused and grossed me out a bit. On the side of the building there's a device attached to the building, not sure what it was for, that had a drive belt attached to it & a large metal(?) sheet hanging out of it covered in what I believe to be black decaying old grease. I believe that was what was attracting all the flies, as we had to bat away quite a few flies while sitting outside. Now granted, I could be totally wrong and that device might've had motor oil all over that sheet and the flies were just there because they smelled food outside on a hot summer day. I didn't take a picture of the device, but that device really needs to be cleaned. I'd also suggest making sure that there's nothing in/around the building contributing to the flies. The cafe part of the building itself looks like it needs repairs. I know that this is a small town and that there's only so much money for these things with limited clientele, but I wanted to bring these up as something that I definitely noticed as a customer & fixing these/doing what you can would improve the cafe, at least in 1 customer's eyes. I do wish this cafe all the best. I love supporting local businesses, and only bring up critiques to hopefully help improve things. PS - I did appreciate the management's cheeky signs about COVID on their doors, and I did go into the bar side and thought that the whimsical arrangement of the taxidermy items were a hoot. The customers: Maskless jackasses who think anyone cares that their friend got COVID despite wearing a mask (hint, Bubba: That isn't how masks work). Even when an elderly person at their table said COVID would sign his death warrant, this blowhard blathered on about how it was a conspiracy and "100-year-olds recover from it all the time." Hope that double Beam went well with breakfast, brainiac. The food and staff? Excellent. My biscuits and gravy came with the lightest, clearest sausage gravy I'd ever had. Even the biscuits were pillowy and didn't sit heavy in my stomach. My wife's french toast was also excellent, and our coffee was better than it needed to be in a cafe like this. We'll definitely come back again: This place makes even its most thickheaded clientele tolerable. read more

We tried this restaurant for dinner and for breakfast and were disappointed both times. It was busy for dinner and it took 15 minutes just to get us a menu once seated. They only had one person being a server while others (the owner and husband) just watched and joked. The waitress claimed they didn't have any coffee, only decaf was available. Later the waitress was able to serve coffee to other guests. We had the chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken. The chicken fried steak was chewy and the chicken fried chicken were pieces of chicken. Breakfast was better but still lackluster. The waitress claimed they did not have decaf coffee and we challenged saying they had it for dinner. Suddenly she found decaf, so we concluded she just didn't want to make it. The building needs some maintenance. The tables and chairs are old and need refinishing since the finish is sticky and chairs are patched with duct tape. The only reason to eat here is it is the only restaurant for breakfast and lunch within 10 miles. The Prospect hotel serves a fine dining dinner. read more

We love this little cafe!!! It's right by all the prospect waterfalls so it's a must stop. Limited menu with burgers and ice cream but everything is delicious. We got cheeseburgers and friends and they gave us a sample of her three different ice cream sandwiches. Owners are super sweet and chatted with us. Excellent service. Love this place! Stopped in for a quick bite to eat after visiting crater lake. We sat in the bar which was empty when we got there. We where super impressed when we saw that the burgers are hand pressed daily so we both decided on the burgers. We where asked if we wanted fries, tots, salad or soup. Asked what the soup was and informed it was homemade that day vegetable beef. One of us got fries the other soup. The soup was definitely delicious, the only thing now wowing about our meal was the fries, nothing special not homemade. Probably the best burger I have had in years. Our drinks where also great. The owner was our bartender and recommended a screwdriver because they hand squeeze the orange juice. Impressed by this it was decided it was a good day for a mimosa. Is there a way to screw up a fresh OJ mimosa? The bartender was super friendly and not pushy at all, this actually made me a little mad. She only mentioned the home made fresh out of the oven pies once, because I was so full I could barely move I forgot to order a slice of pie to go. And I can't see why animals would be any different. But there you have it. So anyhow... We're driving along, on our way to a five-day camp-a-thon, and Hey, you know what? It's vacation. Yes I AM gonna go out of my way to stop by a place called a Cafe & Trophy Room and boasts COMFORT FOOD on a sign coming into town. Sure, I might be a teeny bit disappointed when I realize that the Trophy Room is really just a bar, but as you've guessed, the thrill is back when I come to understand that the Trophies in question are taxidermied everythings. Turkeys. Fish. Wildcats. Badgers. One intense moment between a deer and a mountain lion is frozen forever in time above the pool tables and a poem about The Bartender. It's like the Safari Club Jr up in here. The drinks are mostly bottled and bottle-esque. We didn't have the food, but the cafe on the other side (more diner-y and with a separate entrance) does have a variety of homemade pies in a glass case. The toilets have little wildlife decals lovingly applied to the lids. The locals who are there at 3pm on a Thursday are surprisingly outgoing, but not, y'know, TOO friendly. I sorta outed myself as a city girl, when I caught a glimpse out the back door and was all, ooh, what a spacious yard! But no bother. The TV was playing some survival reality show. It looks like they have some regular dancing and maybe some karaoke, too. This place is the only place to be on a hot summer night in downtown Prospect, OR. Like, literally. You can buy bundles of wood and bags of ice here, which we did. Also, Prospect is the last place you'll get any kind of cell reception before you get to Crater Lake. So. read more

A must when you're in the area. One of the best breakfast since our 3 month rv trip began. (And we're at the end of our trip) Excellent Coffee as well!We also had come in for dinner and enjoyed the clam chowder and fish and chips. One side is the cafe and the other side is the "Trophy room" bar. Enjoyed meeting/talking with one of the locals, Dave, who helps in maintaining the café/bar. It was fun to hear the history of the place. This is a small town café with a small town feel. Remember to slow down and enjoy your visit. read more
