This is one of my favorite places to get a bagel sandwich for breakfast or for lunch. You have lots of choices, and if you have a specific bagel you're craving, you'll want to order earlier because bagels do sell out. The staff is always wonderful when I visit. It has a modern vibe, and I love the black and white color scheme. It gets busy, so ordering online is my preference. You can dine in, but when it's busy, you may not be able to find a table. There's free parking on the street, but depending on the time of day, you may have to park further away and walk. We went for a bit of a different experience, something we don't always go for. I really liked the style of the interior: black and white tile literally head to toe. Parking wasn't too bad unless you have mobility issues. Despite their whole thing being NY-style bagels, I actually selected a Reuben on Pumpernickel. I wasn't feeling like eating a whole bunch of whipped cream cheese or a chicken salad. Portion sizes were pretty good, actually. I think the main things for me would be to simplify the menu and offer size options. Something like half a bagel or like a "classics variety" (like a variety cheesecake). So you could pick and choose quarters or maybe thirds. I was happy to see they had savory cream cheese options because they are so underrated. Things to note before ordering here the food is the best bagel spot in Nashville. My wife loves their GF bagels and I love every other bagel there. The key to make it extraordinary for a bagel sandwich is put a hashbrown in it, unsure why no one else has not thought of this. But now the bad and real truth of this place. If the bagels are the best in Nashville, their service could be the worst. Expect long waits times then add 15 minutes to whatever they tell you (this will protect your experience and for you to enjoy their delicious food). Proper I don't want you to go away, but if you look at the other businesses around you it's a hard place to make it. Seasonal bagel was really good and seasonal Latte was also very good!! I was pleased with the items that were featured for Christmas time and can't wait to go back and taste the regular menu items. They have a huge assortment of bagel options and toppings, plus lots of salads that look scrumptious! I could point my finger spontaneously on the food options and know I would love any choice made for breakfast and lunch. Really great bagel. Super soft and chewy without being too chewy (more than a few places in LA come to mind...). Ton of flavor on the everything bagel and lots of selection for their usual bagel menu. They're closing up shop from 1/5/26 - 1/14/26, so they were out of a ton of stuff. They were all out of gluten free bagels, which was a huge bummer for my partner. No avocado, no meat except pastrami (which was fine by me!) and no cheese except muenster (also fine by me.) They did forget to add arugula and hashbrowns on the sandwich, but they refunded us at least. Apart from the missing items, the pastrami and egg + tomato on an everything bagel was pretty good! Inside was super busy, but the line still moved pretty fast, and we got lucky enough to snag a four top for our group. I recommend this place with a caveat. The food is fantastic and it is a true "NY Style" bagel shop with a great atmosphere and a great menu. The service is not what one would expect. When you walk in there seems to be a substantial amount of employees on the scene. I've visited this location for years and the view is always the same with lots of employees standing around while lots of customers are standing around as well. The service is painfully slow for what is general a fast service type of establishment in most cities. To be clear the food is amazing but if all you order is a plain bagel with butter and not toasted - be prepared to be there for 15 minutes waiting on it. Was in the mood for a bagel while in the area and found this establishment through a quick google search. After seeing the photos I just had to give this place a go. Parking is tricky, especially on a rainy morning. Determined to fulfill my craving I found a parking up the road and took a brisk walk. To my delight it wasn't too busy and I was able to place my order and receive it quickly. Due to my parking situation I ordered my meal to go. I ended up ordering a Pesto Bagel sandwich minus the tomato, but added some turkey. Let me tell ya, the sandwich was huge in the best way possible. I only ate half and saved the rest for later. Proper Bagel is a small quaint place in Belmont. I ran into the bagel shop one morning, while I was out for a jog. The store has a huge range of cream cheese for the bagels, and a wide variety of salmon to choose from. Proper bagel is one of my first loves in Nashville. It's so consistently good that I find myself coming back time and time again. It's the top bagel place for a reason. I pretty routinely get the Leo because it's the perfect salty and savory breakfast and It's so filling I usually spilt it into two meals. The staff is super kind and helpful if you have questions. I was recommended to try this place from a friend of mine who is a local to the area. I had placed an online order on our way out of town since we needed something on the go. I was so glad I did! I really enjoyed this clean and super chic place! The staff was extremely nice and accommodating. It was my first time here and they explain the process and all of their food very well, I was very impressed about how knowledgeable they all were about what they served. The restaurant is small and has an intimate feel to it but very airy and welcoming as well. Now, to get to the actual bagels and my sandwich. It was absolutely delicious! I ordered the white fish piece on a spinach bagel and my husband ordered the pastrami nova on a spinach bagel and they were both amazing. They come with capers, tomato, red onion, and an in house dill sauce. WE LOVE PROPER BAGEL! This is my favorite bagel in Nashville. As a Belmont masters grad, we were here OFTEN. They're pretty quick and the staff will usually have your order ready before your designated pick up time. It's busy inside but that doesn't stop us from coming in. On a nice day, it's best to pick up and walk across the street to enjoy it on Belmont campus. I always get the egg onion bagel with scallion dill. I like to add onions and capers. Proper Bagel was highly recommended by my daughter's friend. We arrived just before 11. It wasn't busy (yet) so we were fortunate to have a few minutes to look over the menu and ask questions. They come with a side of mashed sweet potatoes. He told us it could take up to 30 minutes to prepare our order. We added the Cinnamon Crumb Coffee Cake to have while we waited. Very busy, quaint shop across from a Belmont College. Upon waking in it was immediately impressed by its clean, white, modern seating areas that includes individual tables and a long bar-like table. I was also impressed with the standing room only crowd at 8:30 am on a Sunday. The freshly made bagels, variety of cream cheese offerings and the food preparation area where about 8 workers were busy making the bagel orders was on full display while 2 others took orders at the register and some worked in the back making the bagels. A few others cleaned tables, etc. In addition to bagels, they offer some drinks including coffee and more, as well as crumb cake (a favorite of mine) and other treats. A large segment of the patronage is understandably college students but an almost equal number of non-college age people were also there. I was initially disappointed by the facts that there was a 30 minute wait (backlog of orders) getting my food and the seats were all full. This after having driven a distance to get here and finding a parking space, the nearest was a few blocks away. But the wait was more bearable when a large group of college students finished eating, left and I was able to grab a seat before they were all gone. While sitting at the small table awaiting my bagel, a man came by and grabbed my bag containing my crumb cake, I quickly looked up at him and he released his grip of the bag. At first I thought he was part of the staff, but he lacked the T-shirt that clearly identified staff members. I then realized he was someone looking to grab a free breakfast. He was dressed in a hoodie and jeans, and didn't look like the typical homeless person. Had he simply asked for food, someone would likely have been kind enough to give it to him or paid for him to make an order. Being from NYC, I learned decades ago to not do that because although it's a good thing to do and biblical, nowadays it encourages the people to ask for handouts instead of working. With today's shortage of workers in most places, I think back to the other biblical reference that says if you don't work you don't eat (except of course for the disabled, Infirm, elderly or mentally ill). About 15 minutes later, the same guy swooped in again while I began writing this review and had my head down looking at my phone's keyboard. This time I was more loud and direct. I said, "put it down and don't come near me again." With the large number of people in here, it was easy for him to go mostly unnoticed, so I don't blame the bagel folks at all. Scammers are almost everywhere so we all need to stay vigilant. When the food arrived, I enjoyed it. The bagels and lox cream cheese was NYC legit but lacked the capers that is listed with it on the menu. Maybe I need to specifically ask for it? I recommend this establishment. read more

I went to Proper Bagel because I make bad financial decisions before noon. I got the usual: nova, red onion, tomato, capers. No surprises, which I respect. The supporting cast did their jobs. No one overacted. The cream cheese presented with my selected option was scallion dill, which I've historically avoided because dill usually tastes like something that should be decorating a salmon platter, not entering my mouth, but it was actually better than expected. Genuinely enjoyable. A rare moment where trusting the process didn't end in disappointment. Growth. Now, the bagel. It didn't offend me. But it also didn't try. No chew. No crust. No personality. It was soft in a way that made me suspicious. Like it had something to hide. The iced coffee was decent. Cold enough. But we need to talk about this "less ice" situation. If I'm paying more to receive less of something, I expect to feel emotionally manipulated in a fun way. This felt like a punishment. You're handing me three ounces of coffee in a big cup and calling it "elevated." I'm calling it confusing. In summary: Good ingredients. Respectable effort. Bagel was on silent mode.
