I was at work down the street from ProOptical when my contact lens folded in my eye and I couldn't get it out. I'm not a patient there, but I called ProOptical and even with an afternoon of patients they told me to come right down and they would help me. Dr. Jost saw me within 10 minutes of walking in (I was in a lot of pain and 8 months pregnant so that was awesome!) She removed the broken pieces of my lens and gave me two new ones right away. She was incredibly nice and understanding and told me to call her if there were any problems. I was so impressed with this office and their willingness to help me out right away. Dr. Nguyen is the best! She has a wonderful way with patients, and your eyes are in great hands. She really listens and takes time to answer questions. She is the main reason that I am giving it 5 stars. I just picked out a trendy pair of frames -- their selection is very comprehensive, moreso than LensCrafters, in my opinion. It is also a great location for anyone who works in government center and it's not hard to get an appointment a week or two out. I agree with some of the other yelpers that one woman at the front desk hasn't mastered the art of customer service, but literally everyone else in this place has, so it is worth it! The guy who you order frames with is helpful but not pushy, and a young woman working the frames areas was delightful. I never get the feeling like anyone is trying to "up sell" me here. I see Dr. Bao-Kim Nguyen and she is very personable and efficient but the staff at the front desk is awful. Because of front desk staff I almost visited another optometrist! The staff are unknowledgeable at best and at times just rude! I asked two questions about insurance and my coverage; both questions were answered incorrectly and in a very condescending manner. 1st instance: I called the day before to confirm my insurance plan covered my visit and the receptionist's tone indicated that she was very annoyed and aggravated by my call! She made my question, which takes about 2 minutes to look up, seem like the most inexcusable chore she was asked to do. She also quoted a higher co-pay than was stated in my insurance. I prompted corrected her and realized she had overlooked something. This careless incompetence would have cost be an extra $60 dollars. 2nd instance: I asked if online distributors like 1-800-contacts accept insurance, another front desk woman barely answered my question and replied "probably not, you should look that up online". This is they're livelihood, I believe there should be some basic understanding of how a lot of patients receive their contacts lens. From reading the other comments I can conclude that many of the other patients agree with my sentiments toward Pro-Optical. The optometrists in the practice are very professional and personable. However the other staff are at times condescending, careless, and unknowledgeable. read more

When I first moved to Boston I needed to update my contact lens prescription. I quickly was able to get an appointment, contact lens fitting, adjusted prescription (all these years of wearing glasses and they picked up on the slight astigmatism that had kept my prescription from being just eight) AND they fixed two frames that had become bent out of shape when I crushed them. Ever since they have been my go to for check ups, contact lenses, and frames. I have a hard time coming to terms with the surprise that this place is terrible. I dont think the optometrist even knew his job right. And when i requested multiple exam sessions for my contact power, he was like how many times you want to get tested. I will do one last time for you. I was due for an eye exam and had moved since my last one, so I ended up going to the closest place to where I live and was not disappointed. Dr Nguyen was thorough, pleasant and on time. In fact, as I was walking home, I noticed that my vision seemed a bit blurrier than with my old lenses. I was concerned and returned to check to make sure my prescription was correct. She explained that my contacts (from my previous eye doc) were probably overpowered for my needs. She did bump up the new script slightly, but not to the level I had before. I am noticing some negative reviews here and they basically have to do with two issues - 1)price 2)staff friendliness. I will address both. 1) you do not HAVE to buy contacts or glasses from this place, shop around. For the quality, they have very competitive prices - and they give a 20% discount on frames if you have had an eye exam there. 2) I personally was very impressed by the office staff. They were pleasant and accommodating, even when I had to return an hour later to readdress the above issue with my prescription. I am satisfied all-around and will definitely go back here for my eye care needs. read more

You can schedule your doctor's appointment online, completely. Most places that's not really an option. I've been seeing Dr. Kublin for a few years, and he has been very helpful, working to find the best deals for me with whatever insurance I've had and keeping watch on possible medication side effects for a major health issue of mine. When I had an eye infection, I finally went to him- it took me not getting through to my PCP's office to realize that I can come here for eye issues. Dr. Kublin quickly treated my problem and was helpful with ideas to prevent it from happening again. I've always been able to schedule my appointment quickly and I've never had a problem with either updating my glasses or anything contact lens related. In fact, much like going to the dentist, I usually end up leaving with a small bag of goodies to try out. read more

Ok seriously!!!! I love this place! I have had to go every 3 months over the past year for an eye issue and the staff there just couldn't be nicer! Dr. Jost is OUTSTANDING! She took her time with me...explained what was going on in detail...she is extremely knowledgeable and so kind and understanding. She really goes the extra 10 miles for her patients! I don't remember being treated with such care and respect! EVER! My husband and daughter go to her as well and have had the same experience! An amazing doctor! (also, I am never kept waiting!) For help picking out frames...go to Danielle! She has a keen eye and will make sure you leave with the best look! I wanted back up glasses and sunglasses as well. A total of 5 different looks! She was totally up to the challenge! She will not recommend a frame that she doesn't feel looks great! I had such a great experience with her! Unprofessional and bad service, especially from the manager (the bald old guy, no offense, but he did not tell me his name). I paid $430 for the lenses from Essilor. I told him I wanted to know the basic information of the lenses, including the prescription and bar code on the bag, and where they were ordered from etc. I think the information is important for ensuring the correct prescription and the quality of the lenses. But he told me "I don't know what you are talking about, no one has requested it, you are the first one, you have to trust us..." He said he had been working there for 25 years. Unfortunately, he is not professional at all. His attitude could not be worse. The even worse thing was that the left lens was broken. You should check the glasses carefully before giving them to your customer. If the glasses were broken, you should at least honestly tell your customers in advance. You are so unprofessional. I have never seen a doctor like Dr. Smith. do not ever go see him. he has some mood swings to patients. one day he was really nice to me. next week for check up, he was really mean to me and throw papers in front of me and when i ask him questions regarding to contact he was being sarcastic. I've been going here for the last two years for exams, glasses, and (recently) contacts. With a couple of minor exceptions, I couldn't be happier, and I'll definitely continue to come here in the future. I've only seen one doctor (Dr. Jost), so I can't speak to the medical staff overall. Good: - Great selection of frames and contacts. - Extremely convenient location near MGH. - Dr. Jost is excellent - very friendly and thorough, but I've never had any feeling of being rushed or pushed around. I've had good experiences with the other technicians/desk staff as well. Not great: - They're relatively expensive, but I think that comes with location and overall quality. - Other reviewers remarked that there was a bit of up-selling of frames, coatings, etc. That's probably true, but I don't think it's a unique problem here. Any glasses place will ask you to get the extra coatings and more expensive materials. And you can always decline :) read more

I saw Dr. Duane Smith and he almost helped me forget the pain I was in. His professionalism and his kindness stand out. I ordered my glasses through eyeconic.com and was told to pick it up from prooptical. When I first entered the place I was told by the front office lady that one of the optometrists would help me. 10 min later the same person asked my last name and brought the glasses. I then told her that I was interested in buying another pair for my wife and that we needed to know the size. I was asked again to talk to an optometrist. I spoke to the male optometrist that was working there on Thursday 3/12 at 7PM. I was told that glasses come in different shapes and sizes and that there is no such thing as glass size. I showed him my glasses and the numbers that represent the temple size, bridge distance and lens size. He kept on telling me that it's not a pair of pants there is no such thing. I recently went to Pro Optical for an eye exam and new glasses. Everyone who works there was extremely friendly and helpful. The optometrist (Dr. Smith) was professional, funny, and helpful when I had concerns about blurry vision. In addition, they were able to find me a discount on frames. The only thing I will say is that it is pricey - however, with the quality of services and products I would highly recommend this place. I was previously a Cohen's customer but the lackluster service and unprofessional doctors led me to find a new place. There is also a huge selection for frames and the salespeople will help you with anything you need. There is street parking, but they also validate for the parking lot/garage which is very helpful because parking is tight in that area. read more

Dr. Jost is good but the optical staff is not knowledgeable or helpful. They don't adjust glasses properly and you will have to go back multiple times for adjustment. Also, check your bills as they overcharge your insurance and you will be stuck with paying what the insurance doesn't. Shady billing! read more

Dr. Duane Smith rudely said to me "this is not a discussion" as I was trying to explain why I sought a lower power of prescription in both eyes (rather than just one). He struck me as a "my way or the highway" kind of optometrist. Had he been willing to hear me out and subsequently said no, I would have been OK with that. I found his manner offputting and offensive. He is free to prescribe as he sees fit, but I am free to take my business elsewhere and not be spoken to in such a way. So today I got to deal with Angela. I went in because the high-end crizal coating got scratched. I have been there 2 x and both times spent a lot of money on Glasses. When I pay good money and I am told I have a one year warranty I would expect that a scratch resistant coating would cover a scratch. Guess what, it doesn't. There is a $ 25 copay. While Angela was not very people friendly, she also delivered this information to very matter of fact and pointed at the sign. I got upset and argued my point and she proceeded to continue staring me down and with no empathy said that's it. Manufacturers warranties are only covered. I have never been treated like that anywhere. I told her she should probably smile more and she laughed in my face. After this I'll take me business elsewhere. I paid the copay. Fix the glasses and I'll move on. If you work in retail you should really be more polite I could have taken it better. When you show no remorse or empathy it hurts the customer. read more

Horrible experience here. The first time I went they asked me what kind of contacts I used (because I discarded my old boxes) I told the lady at the front desk and she said she had never heard of them (acuvue) so they called my old Dr to clarify the brand, which was correct, yet they talked me into a different brand. Then I try and order contacts through two other companies which had to call pro optical to verify my prescription which the office denied both times. Not sure why seeing as though my prescription was less than a year old and I had the old boxes with the strength on them. Very very rude doctors and staff. Do your favor and go else where unless you want to be disrespected and not have them listen to you and what you want. NEVER again going back. read more

I went there recently to have my eyes checked. They told me that the lenses would cost $700 plus$200 for no name metal frames. I checkrd around at 3 different place and got them for alot less. The other issue I had was that the presription that they gave me was not strong enough and I could not see well with the prescription that pro-optical gave me. I had my eyes reexamined at MEEI correctly and bought new lenses and frames (RAY BAN) for 60% less than Pro-optical. pro-optical has a beautiful office that is conviently located near the MGH. I went to have my lenses updated with my new prescription. They completed the job and I wore my glasses for about a month. I went back to have another pair done, and they realized that someone at their shop had written my prescription down wrong for the first pair. So, I had worn the wrong prescription for a month! It was good that he noticed this, and I was appreciative, but he didn't even apologize. Seems to me this is deserved at least that. Then they agreed to fix them. A few days later they gave me the new lenses, which were different sizes between the left and the right, and the right had a sliver shaved off of the bottom. They mentioned nothing - didn't even look at them apparently. I showed them the error and they just said they would re-do them. They seemed to blame the lab, taking no responsibility or even bothering to apologize for more than a month of time I had wasted dealing with this, let alone wearing the wrong prescription. The overall feeling I got was that I was an inconvenience to them. I got my money back and left. read more

I am legally blind without glasses and have severe astigmatism, but I'm driving at night and reading at multiple distances with the same pair of contact lenses, fitted on the first day. Their office has validated parking, they're next to Whole Foods for a quick coffee, and their prices for frames and lenses are reasonable. Best optometry firm I have ever encountered! read more

Dr. Duane Smith is absolutely wonderful. He's extremely smart, competent, and caring. His experience and knowledge are obvious from the first conversation with him. He gave thoughtful, satisfying answers to my every question, and he diagnosed long-term eye problems that other doctors had missed entirely. As someone with lots of doctors in my family, I tend to hold medical professionals to a very high bar.
