If the first time we visited was not 100%, our subsequent visits made me feel like this place more than deserves 5 stars. It became our favorite and go-to spot in Nyack. We even had our wedding after-party there, and it was fabulous. We have since moved out of Rockland County, so haven't been back to Prohibition often, and we miss it! read more

This place looks super cute on the inside... and has awesome decor. In fact based on the decor and price it's a pretty nice restaurant/pub. We went in Wednesday, and yes we were the only two patrons during the lunch/dinner lull. We both had water to start, and took advantage of the 3/$25 appetizer special for the all day "happy hour" (11-6). For one of the apps we had the spicy wings, and they were AWESOME! Crispy, saucy, and spicy. The Mac and cheese was delicious and gooey (Just like we had hoped for), and the quesadilla was fresh, and tender. So far the FOOD was great. The service on the other hand was lacking... I'm not really a whimp when it comes to spice, but a 6oz water glass just isn't going to cut it when you order spicy food. Honestly, I hope that their "drink" glasses are bigger than the "water" glass because I would find it hard to justify getting a $2+ beverage and having to beg for refills. When our main course arrived the chicken on the chicken and waffles LOOKED a little dark, but my friend thought maybe it was supposed to look that way, the maple bacon butter was TO DIE for!!!! It was so good It's got me on a quest for a recipe. I had the French dip with fries, I have to say for a dip the sandwich itself was great, the Au jus was pretty thick like potato gravy but still had good flavor. At this point I had to ask for another refill.... granted sometimes it's hard to balance hovering and being too distant from the ONLY table in the place. Upon finishing my water, and just getting tired of forcing bread down without anything I had to go and ask our server for boxes. For my friend and I it was our first dining experience in New York, and I'm disappointed that we paid over $50 for poor service ... the food is great, just don't expect too much effort I guess. read more

Food was yummy in general but like many of the other reviews service was definitely something that negatively impacted our experience. Our waitress got our order wrong (although she let us keep the incorrect dish which was good customer service) but she had friends at a nearby table and spent much of the evening talking to them which wasn't the best experience!! read more

Went here recently for dinner and was pleasantly surprised. Our table started with the grilled cheese shooters which were absolutely adorable and very unique. We got some drinks as well. I had a really delicious cider from Vermont which I liked so much I plan to purchase in cans and bring back to Virginia where I live. I had a side salad (pretty standard) and buffalo cauliflower for my entree. The cauliflower was SO GOOD and so satisfying. I recently stopped eating meat which can sometimes make eating out difficult or boring when all they have in the menu as a vegetarian option is salad. My husband had Guinness braised short ribs and a friend had the house burger. They both said they really enjoyed their meals. I really appreciate the uniqueness of their menu offerings and would definitely go back to try more things! read more

Stopped in this weekend for an early dinner with a friend. Ordered the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. It was just OK. Our entrees came out before we had even finished our appetizer. And our plates were pretty much dropped onto our table before we could even try to clear away our own plates to make room. I really hate when restaurants do this. I noticed our waiter was close by, and he just stood there, texting on his phone. Again, the food was just OK. My shrimp dish didn't feel deserving of it's $22 price. I tried a bite of my friend's mac and cheese. Again, nothing impressive. I could make better at home. The lack of service was extremely disappointing. The restaurant was not busy, and we were sitting outside. I watched our waiter stand outside at the doorway texting on his phone for most of the time we were there. He not once asked us how our meals were, never asked if we'd like another drink. Our water glasses were never refilled. Normally I'd give a place another shot, but it's just not worth it. My wife and I have been talking about dining at Prohibition River for some time now. She's an afficianado of gastro-pubs, and when we were in Nyack this past Sunday we tried to go to Prohibition River for brunch. I don't know if the restaurant is so busy that you would need a reservation for Sunday brunch, but we tried to walk in. We were a party of three, and I went to the host table to see how long it might be until we could be seated. When I got up the host station there were at least a couple of other parties waiting as well. They were maybe 5 people in all. And it didn't seem clear if they had put their names to to wait for a table or not. I didn't want to be rude and step ahead of these other diners, but I also wanted to make sure that someone on the staff would check us in and give us an estimate on how long it might be until we might get seated. Numerous times members of the wait staff came by. Either to serve diners who were eating at their sidewalk tables, or to get menus at the host station. But they seemed to be avoiding any kind of interaction or acknowledgement of the people waiting for tables. And I did see at least one 6 top table open while we were waiting. So was there someone who was working the host station who was busy and unable to help waiting diners? I never found out. After waiting at least 10 minutes for someone to simply take down our names or give us an estimate on the wait time for a table we gave up. And I was really put off by how the wait staff were actively ignoring us while we were waiting. I *REALLY* wanted to give this place a chance. I *REALLY* wanted to like it. And I wish I could actually review them ON THE FOOD and overall experience. But reviews are also about how customers and even potential customers are treated when they walk into an establishment. Like anyone else, I want to be treated with a modicum of respect when I step in the door. Like anyone else, I don't like to be ignored by wait staff that does not appear to be interested in helping someone who is not at one of their tables. Are these servers not aware that the people at the front door will eventually wind up at their tables? And that those are the people who will tip them for their service? The restaurant business is very much about hospitality. And I hope that the management can re-instill this ethos into the staff that is working their Sunday brunch. Or hire a manager/host. read more

Overall an okay, but not worth a second visit for me. I had the burger which was average quality for a pub, slightly smaller than most pubs, asked for Med-rare, but got medium well, fries were good, bun was not substantial enough, typical packaged bun from the grocery store that falls apart. What a place! Came here on a Sunday night and found it to be a real low-key, friendly place with a good whiskey selection and a nice little mini-grand staircase in the back. I would've gone to town on the whiskey, but it had been a long day of dragging my girlfriend around to Goodwill thrift stores in search of old lady jackets and old LPs and she was a pretty good sport about it. Otherwise, I would've been swimming in whiskey. The bartender was very helpful and tolerant, considering I was wearing a ladies nylon windbreaker and asking stupid questions, like whether the 'cauliflower steak' had actual steak in it (I hate steak). He assured me that it did not, but I am an untrusting person and didn't want to risk ordering it only to find out that it was a giant pile of meat with a couple cauliflowers on it. What the hell do I know, right? So I went the safe route and had a couple beers and a fish sandwich with fries, which was definitely of a higher caliber than your average pub food. I generally don't like fries, but the ones here were pretty great. If I ever find myself in this little town again, perhaps I'll grow a pair and order this 'cauliflower steak'. I'll start by saying the food is worthy of five stars. The prohibition burger is so fresh, and it's the perfect size. The onion jam and the bun compliment each other perfectly. We recently went for my fiancée's mothers birthday and the service was mediocre at best. We made a reservation and sat down promptly at 7. It took 20 minutes to get water. From there we never were asked for any refills. We each ordered iced tea or Diet Coke and had our water on the side. After the meal the waiter came with a pitcher of water for refills, and grabbed the soda cups and proceeded to fill them with water. He dropped the check on the table, we paid and when returned it, he didn't bother to say thanks for coming or have a good night. But at least the food was very good. read more

To make matters even worse, while we were here (1230pm afternoon on a Sunday) the place got mobbed with a bunch of loud, obnoxious people at the bar. Visited over the weekend for a late lunch. To drink I had a Moscow mule which was so refreshing on a hot day. We started with the grilled cheese shots for an appetizer. Delish!!! They were literally shots of tomato bisque with mini grilled cheese on top. I had the portobello & black bean burger as my entree. The burger was homemade (very important to vegetarians lol) and full of flavor. The dish came with fries which were crispy and perfect. Came here for my birthday dinner tonight. I was here once before last year and decided to try it again. On our last trip the wait staff was extremely attentive and the food was outstanding. This time around I was very disappointed. The ambiance of the restaurant is very nice. It's great for a special occasion or date night. The food, however, was the stuff of Kitchen Nightmares. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich, my husband ordered the french dip and we shared the bacon meatballs. There is no bread or started things to keep you busy while you wait for your food. My husband asked for bread and they brought out a cold loaf cut into slices which had the flavor profile of an oven cleaner. We didn't even bother after the first bite. The bacon meatballs were done well and alone would have been very good but they were smothered in an overly sweet BBQ onion sauce that tasted like it came from a bottle. The French dip was absolutely dry. The meat had no flavor to it. The dip was necessary just to make it palatable but my husband was hungry so he ate it. Definitely have had better dips elsewhere. There were no onions or peppers or anything else on it to give it any sort of flare. I had the grilled chicken sandwich. You'd think that would be a safe bet. Nope. The chicken was pounded super thin and overcooked until it was chicken jerky on a roll with some wilted arugula, blue cheese crumble that tasted like it came from the grocery store and covered in some sort of sauce with three razor thin slices of apple mushed into the bread. It was supposed to come with a slaw according to the menu but I didn't get that. I did get a bountiful helping of fries which was the most palatable thing they served. I only had a few bites of the chicken sandwich and was done. The pickles were said to be made in restaurant but they only gave a couple of slices. I don't know what has happened in the last year but the food has gone from decent to almost inedible. Coming on a Tuesday night with only one other table and a couple of people at the bar, I expected a LOT better. The wait staff is still pretty good. Took a long time to get the check because our waiter was eating his dinner at a back table and no one was helping him with the two tables. He was very nice and polite. Overall, skip this place. There are much better places on the block and for the money, you'll find much better food! Hopefully they can find their groove again because it's a nice environment and I think they could pull it together. read more

I like how the restaurant looks. They did a beautiful job in here. The style is awesome. As for the staff, there's a lot to be desired. We were a group of seven. The waiter asked us if we could fit in a booth, or if we really wanted, he's nice tables. We are the type of people who don't want others to go out of their way, so we succumbed to his passive-aggressive way of saying squeeze in, I don't feel like doing my job. The table was set for four and they didn't bother to reset the table until we asked for napkins and utensils. When we were asked about drinks, my wife made her order and the waitress left. I wanted a drink as well. Every time she came by, I tried to get her attention, but she kept walking by. After my wife's drink was delivered, she finally acknowledged my existence. Our food was fine. But nothing exceptional. The waiter said he would bring ketchup. That never happened. We asked two other people after I yelled "Hello!" from the back of a booth I couldn't get out of. When it finally came, I can tell you it isn't Heinz. I have no idea what brand it is, but it's horrible. No one liked it. Our current draft options are on this menu," [the printed menu]. That's just weird. What I ordered tasted like a Budweiser with a teaspoon of honey added, but hey, it was $7, so it must've been better than that. We ordered the bacon meatballs as an app. The flavor was okay, my wife enjoyed it more than I did. They had been overcooked, to the point that there was a loss of flavor. Wife ordered the veggie burger, which she thought was the best veggie burger she has ever had. I ordered the Prohibition Burger. For a burger bearing the establishment's name, again, I was underwhelmed. It wasn't "bad", but it was overcooked (I had ordered it medium, it was well done). Bun was a pretty basic bun and the burger was a reasonable size, but not at the price. The whole experience, food-wise, suggested a place past its peak. There are better options on the same street. Great location in downtown Nyack. I like the decor inside, large booths and sliding front windows which allow us to eat and people watch with the windows open. My buffalo chicken sandwich was good and the lettuce (this may sound weird) was the freshest tasting I ever had on a sandwich. It actually added great favor to the sandwich. Absolutely lovely! Just left this place an hour ago and can't wait to go back! The grilled cheese shots are heavenly. 10/10 recommend. My fiancé enjoyed the meatballs. I try to like Prohibition River. I really do. The vibe is great. The menu is terrific. There have been too many instances, however, where they miss the mark. I've been here about 5-6 times. I've had chicken served to me raw. Twice. They took it back and made me a new one and the second one was raw too. I had a bartender too busy staring at his phone or chatting with a server at the far end of the bar to remember the drink I ordered or the check I requested. It was a slow snowy evening. The four of us eating and drinking at the bar near the door felt ignored. On that particular night, we each had one vodka drink or one glass of wine. We would have stayed and had a few more rounds except the pours were so minuscule and we felt the alcohol wasn't a good value. The drinks on the rocks were about $10 each for a few sips. For a night of eating and drinking we wanted more. We left and went somewhere else. Maybe this is why it's called 'Prohibition' River. Except for the chicken fiasco most menu items I've tried here are delicious. The large booths are warm and inviting. If you want my suggestion: add a few more ounces to the wine pour and liquor drinks on the rocks. If you have to charge a little more then do so. Right now it feels cheap and over controlled compared to other places we can drink in the area. Just my opinion. read more

It is so unfortunate that I cannot give this restaurant a 4 Star review. My husband and I love the food especially the Black & Blue Wings, but the bar service is awful. We go on Thursday nights and it is very clear that the female bartender is only concerned about whatever is on her phone. My husband and I like to enjoy a few beers with our meal but we have to continuously try to get the bartender's attention. Awesome. We hauled to get here on a drive to MA from NC. They did not disappoint. The Prohibition Burger was unreal: every component of the burger made it rich and unique. We also shared the daily Mac and cheese. It was rich and creamy, with green beans infused and a crispy melted cheese on top. Divine. The bartender had some really great music playing and she was very knowledgable about the beer selection. We tried some new beers that we'd never had. I had never heard of this place before, the reviews on Yelp were great so we decided to check it out. We went on the weekend of the town's Hallowe'en parade, so it was crazy to find parking, but, once we got there, we met our friends and got a lovely, high-backed velvet booth at the back. You couldn't hear the background noise outside at all, it was great. The service was fantastic, the server was dressed as Peter Pan (everyone was in costume)...he was trying to stick to character but came off a little more like Puck from A Midsummer's Night Dream than Peter Pan! The food was amazing - you have to have the braised short ribs, the cauliflower steak and the mac & cheese. Also, the cocktails were REALLY good and they have a huge craft beer selection (a must!) - great place to go for drinks and appetizers or have a nice 3 course meal with close friends OR even a romantic dinner. Have kids? We have a 2 year old that enjoyed the kids menu and a high chair! Would have been a 5-star review, but, it was a bit overpriced for the portion size and for the location.
