The SD card on my cell phone, which had hundreds of photos, suddenly died. Unfortunately we weren't so great about backing up the data. Little did we know that just a few short weeks later, one of our dogs would have to be euthanized, and many of those lost photos were of her. We stopped at B Buy and spoke to someone with the G S and were quoted $600 just to start. We decided to search for another option and landed on Progressive Tech. The experience was the best you could hope for. They kept us informed of their progress recovering the data. When they had finished, we took the new SD card home and realized that some photos were still not there. One of their techs worked on recovering those photos over the weekend using three different programs, and when he was finished, 99% of the photos were back. We couldn't be more grateful. The original $200 quote, including the fee to diagnose, is what they charged us, even with the additional work they did. The staff were friendly and professional. I will first say that these guys have integrity. They didn't try to sell me anything I didn't need, and they were honest throughout the process. I also felt that they were thorough, and I have confidence that they came to the right conclusion on my issue. They were all friendly and took the time to explain things to me. What I was not happy with was how long it took, and the fact that I had to initiate most communication along the way. I paid for 3-5 days diagnostic service when my machine wouldn't turn on. They say that work will start within this period, though in the fine print they also say that there are no guarantees. At 5 1/2 days, I called to see what was up, and they hadn't started, but were going to that afternoon. At day 10-11 they thought it was probably a power supply issue and recommended replacing it. I really appreciate that since they weren't 100% sure this was the issue, that they offered a full refund on the labor and equipment if the issue recurred within 30 days. Turned out though that when they went to replace the power supply on the morning of day 12, they noticed that one of the motherboard capacitors was bulging. This led them to conclude that the motherboard was failing, not the power supply. I am confident that they came to the right answer, and in the long run that is what matters most. My issue is that with the cords pulled out of the way, this bulging capacitor is obvious -- I feel that by day 6 at the latest they should have moved the cords out of the way and inspected the motherboard carefully and found the issue. Instead I had to wait in limbo for almost another week. 7 days (12 minus 5 before starting) to diagnose this issue was too long. I felt that while they may have looked at it every day after they got started (or not), that it was not receiving enough attention. My sense (right or wrong) is that the technicians have too many jobs that they have to split their attention amongst. I also had to call regularly to see how it was going -- they should have a process where they check in with customers every few days, rather than just calling when they have found the problem or need a decision. read more

In short: If you have water damage on your laptop take it here asap. Water spill on your laptop? 1) Unplug it 2) Turn it off by holding down the power button 3) Wipe off as much as you can 4) Open up the case and take out the battery 5) Take it to Progressive Tech Took my MacBook Pro that took a massive spill of water on it to Progressive Tech. I had aired it out for around 12 hours, but that didn't fix the problem. They were able to fix it for around $200 in cleaning fees which is way cheaper than you will find anywhere else (the Apple Store will charge $800 and places you ship it too will cost at least 350). Additionally they were extremely fast (turnaround time was less than 24 hours!) and professional. I had been told that $200 would cover unlimited labor to clean it, but then got a call later that night saying they wanted additional money for labor to continue to clean it .... okay... you're not exactly in a position to bargain in these situations. Came in the next day to pick up the now working laptop (woohoo!) and explained my confusion about what unlimited labor really means and they were kind and waived the secondary labor charge apologizing for the original salesman's incorrect language. Solid commitment to customer service and sticking to their word. The trackpad was acting up for a few days afterwards, but it seems to have resolved itself eventually, and other than that it has been clear sailing. Thanks Progessive Tech! Cheap, fast, professional, local what more do you want in computer repair? I had an issue months ago with my MAC, i took it in to the Mac store in u village and the MAC store on 45th. I was told that my computer was vintage and that they no longer worked on them. Next i was told that it was gonna be over a thousand dollars to fix and get my info back. Thinking that i had lost all hope for salvaging 50 gigs of music and another 40 in pictures i gave up. Months later friends of mine were having issues with there laptops and decided to give progressive a shot. I went in with them and decided to ask about my mac. He told me that if i needed a rush diagnostic it was roughly 80.00 but if i had time to just drop off my computer it would be roughly 30.00. I thought to myself that $30 is worth trying. I got a call a couple of days later saying that there mac tech was slow and got to it right away. They told me that if i wanted to give it a try they might be able to salvage my info. It would range from 200-$500 max. If they couldnt do it worst i was out would be $200. I decided to give it a shot. A few days later they called me and said we did it, total cost was $375. For all the music and pics i had potentially lost so worth it! These guys were awesome. No one else will touch my computers from now on. read more

I made a good choice choosing these guys. Although computer savvy, I am not always 100% computer literate. I bought my computer in for slow graphics and my nervousness about the hard drive (previous crash). They were honest, improved the speed, corrected the software issues on my computer and even cleaned it. Great service and reliable advice. The only reason there are 4 rather than 5 stars is that they were a little late in picking up and returning computer to me--but I can't complain too much, they did come pick it up and drop it off without me doing anything. read more

I have to say the customer service could be better. I have spent well over $600 at their store. This time I had my computer fixed it cost $400. After taking the computer back home, when I reinstalled office, the printer wouldn't work. I called them and asked for help. Their reply was basically to bring it in and pay them more money. Same response as I always get from them. The least they could do after I spent so much money is to take some responsibility in getting the computer working again. read more

You pay for what you get, and with these guys you get a lot. I had a problem with my custom built cpu and couldn't figure it out, so I called them up. For a little extra they came out picked it up, got it back to their store and had the problem diagnosed and fixed in 3 days, and then dropped it off for a little extra. Their tech stuck around to make sure everything was working properly, and no one was snide or derisive about how silly and easy my problem was. They were quick, courteous, and did their job well, which is a hard thing to find in the computer repair world. read more

If I could give Fraser at Progressive Tech more than 5 stars I would in a heartbeat! Over the course of about a year the hinges on my Toshiba laptop had broken down. It no longer opened or closed without horrible cracking sounds that pushed up the face of the case. I could only leave it half-open, which was fine when in use, but definitely not when on the go. I'd taken it to the Geek Squad who said I'd be without it for about a week and any repair would cost several hundred dollars. I also took it to another independent repair shop that said they might be able to fix it, but again with a similar estimate because the interior sections of the hinges were most likely broken and I'd be without it for several days. This is my only system, but I was not ready to buy another when this one was only two years old and worked perfectly fine otherwise. But it was very hard to travel with in this state! So after a friend recommended Progressive Tech, because she had an exceptionally great experience there, I thought I'd give them a try. I called first and over the phone he also mentioned it might be as much to fix as the system cost (and truthfully it wasn't an expensive machine) and they hate to see people throw money away. Wow. There's someone that truly knows the meaning of customer *support*. With that in mind, he suggested I come down so they could assess in person. When I brought it in he spent about two minutes on it before discovering "The screws are missing.". What?? I was waiting for some additional information not believing that it could be that simple. Then he and his co-worker explained to me how the hinges are structured, which made the problems I'd been having with the bending of the case make complete sense. The last place I took it also mentioned a screw missing (not two, though) yet didn't seem to realize that would be the primary problem -- I don't think they knew, or maybe they thought they'd get more from me if I left it with them. Not Fraser. He quickly brought out his toolbox, found a couple of proper screws, put them in, and omg, it closed! And opened! All this time, all these people that had looked at it and no one had tried to put the screws back in. I was shocked. Truly. I told him he really should charge me quite a bit because anyone else would have charged me even more. But he wouldn't take any money from me. Wait, I thought, "How do you keep the business going?" Even for a few minutes, most shops have a minimum just to touch your system. He said they'd rather have a good reputation and happy customers and that is what keeps his business going. So I told them I'd tell as many people as possible. If you need anything done to your system, device, electronics of any sort, come to Progressive Tech! They're honest, will not overcharge you, to say the least, and know electronics inside and out. After I walked out with my laptop (now able to fit under my arm), I realized something even more important. They really seem to love what they do! They're having fun! They're taking great pleasure in helping their customers get their tech toys back in good working order so their customers can have fun too. I went to progressive tech for my laptop. The screen had stopped working. They told me the LCD and the board were bad, and I should pay for data recovery. When I got home I took apart my computer only to find that they had disconnected the power button. Not only that, but the problem was the connection on the back of the screen. Recently, my laptop was on the fritz. I decided to drop it off at ProgressiveTech Seattle (U-Dist) to have it checked out. It turns out, laptop repairs were more costly then anticipated. Instead, I decided to have the Technicians back-up the laptop's data to my personal Hard-Drive at a reasonable price. A week later, after the back-up was complete, I tried accessing the data only to find it was not back-up correctly. I returned the personal Hard-Drive to ProgressiveTech to have their technicians re-examine the issue. An hour later, the Technicians confirmed that the data was not backed-up correctly. According to ProgressiveTech's manager, however, they were not liable for the lost data? In the end, not only did I lose the service fee paid to ProgressiveTech, and all data from my laptop, but I was also blamed for the lost data. Needless to say, it was a horrible customer experience that I hope no one else has to endure. read more

These guys saved my business and my life! I had a huge accident with my external hard drive crashing. They were able to creatively problem solve by finding a way to save my entire photography business off my recently deleted laptop, saving me AT LEAST $1,500 dollars by not having to send the external off to a data recovery "clean room" company. During their testing of my laptop, they discovered that my internal hard drive was failing as well. They worked quickly to recover my files in addition to removing everything else off the laptop since it was unstable. Due to the age of the lap top, they recommended I not put anymore money into it (especially since another company had ripped me off when doing a screen replacement earlier in the year). Cutting my losses with this computer was extremely difficult and the whole process was very upsetting and emotional to me because it was so stressful. I had a very limited budget and they were not only up front about their pricing, but they worked with me given my individual financial situation. They even helped me shop for a new used computer. Their level of compassion was 100% genuine and sincere. Because of them, I not only saved my business, avoided eminent future computer problems, and saved money, but I felt very taken care of. They were incredibly friendly and honest in their business. Total cost to fix my problem was around $450, if I had gone through the Mac store, it would have been $650, if I had attempted to mail my external to a clean room company, it could have been as much as $2,500 and I wouldn't have known my 5 year old laptop was dying either, which would have meant even more bills in the next year. It is rare to find a business who cares more about finding a creative way to help their customer when their customer is low on funds than about price gouging. They have really won in the long run because they've now made a customer for life. It is because they understand this business principle that I know I can trust them and continue to seek their service in the future. I rarely write negative reviews, but I had a very poor experience with Progressive Tech. I dropped a 160GB hard drive that had about 10 years of my life on it (photos, lesson plans, home videos). They were unable to recover anything so they sent it to the "clean lab," called Drivesavers. After that, service was horrible. They informed me the job was 90% successful and said to think it over and if I wanted to pay to get the data that would be my choice. After hearing nothing more, a few weeks later out of the blue one of the staff starting emailing me threatening to send me to a collection agency because I hadn't paid. It seems like no one communicates with each other and each person I talked to on the phone told me something different. Furthermore, they completely exaggerated the recovery results. The lab had, in fact, only recovered about 60% of the data and huge chunks were missing. The Drivesavers lab was reasonable, had great customer service (not completely convoluted like Progressive Tech) and offered me a generous refund. Progressive Tech didn't give a s-- either was about the results of the recovery, they just wanted their cut of the money from Drivesavers, and I am sure that is why they threatened to send me to a collection agency. Overall, the experience was a nightmare and I regret ever having gone to them in the first place. read more

This place was the best computer repair shop I have been to. The are very kind and professional (which can be very hard to find in the IT repair field). The initial price structure was great. The idea that I could just pay more and get it done asap was amazing. Most places have a flat fee and your computer just gets put at the end of the line no matter what. They stayed in contact with me through the whole process and answered all my questions (some twice). They made sure I understood everything about the problem and presented several options of how they can help. They realized I had shorted out my mother board, but everything else was fine. I was told they don't replace motherboards because it is rarely cost effective, but they said if that was what I wanted to do they would help me find a place that does. They always seemed to try and save me money and time, not take it. The price to get my hard drive put in a external box was maybe a few dollars higher than some places, but it was lower than most. The fact that they are open til 7 PM, 7 days a week was the most valuable part for me. While most places close on the weekend, they realize that computers crash anytime. I will always know that I can get my computer into the shop when it is convenient to me, not to them. I payed for the express diagnostic, and in 2 days everything was ready. When I learned of their environmental practices it confirmed all the feelings I had about them. They have true integrity, which is hard to find. read more

I went to Progressive Tech because I had a mysterious problem getting internet wirelessly and through the Ethernet port. I dropped my computer off on Saturday and paid them the $66 diagnostic fee to begin to see what was wrong with it. They called me 3 days later (quick turn around! I was quoted 2-7 days, and one of those was a Sunday.) They explained something foreign to me about part of the operating system being corrupted and no anti-virus. I told them I would call them back that same day and I would let them know what I wanted to do as far as either doing nothing or proceeding to try to fix it - we were unsure if what they could do would actually "fix" the problem. So, later that evening I decided to go into the store rather than call them back. I walked in, and began talking to the guy. (Sorry guy I don't know your name!) He explained basically the same things he did on the phone, I decided to not fix it, and me, my boyfriend, and the guy began having a lovely conversation about the new computer I should buy and why HPs suck and you know, computer stuff. The guy was more than willing to take the time to offer his knowledge to my boyfriend and I. As i began checking my computer out, ready to go sell it, the guy said after looking at my record on his screen that the "approved to proceed with fixing my computer box" was checked. And that my computer was approved to fix and that it was almost done being fixed. And I said I didn't approve that. And the guy said but it was approved, and I said not by me and ...you get it. Basically the other guy I talked to who had called me earlier in the day and left a message had accidentally hit the "approved" button. I am that terrible combination of "I don't ever back up" plus "I abuse the crap out of my laptop". So go figure- I have had two hard drives fail in as many years. You would think I would learn my lesson and start to back up my data. Nope. But both times I have gone to these guys, and both times have gotten stellar service. I have a macbook pro, and use it a lot for work as well as streaming tv, photos, etc. The first fail was epic- my hard drive committed sepukku and really, REALLY failed. The genius bar was totally unsure that I would ever see any of my precious photos and documents again, and recommended that I send it to one of the only clean room places in, apparently, the world. I instead went to Progressive Tech. They were able to recover 100% of my files, and walked me through the entire process. Their fees were super reasonable, given the fact that my hard rive was totally corrupted and unmanageable. The second hard-drive failure was a bit less traumatic, and at least my files were somewhat still organized. They talked me through the entire process, replaced my hard drive for way less and with a way more stable new hard drive than Apple would have and for cheaper, and even, when I couldn't find my files I was looking for, sat on the phone with me until I could find them. I probably have talked to every person who works at this store throughout my trials/tribulations, and every time I was impressed by their knowledge and patience. These guys are the best. Completely incompetent. Avoid like the plague. I paid the $50(!) extra for immediate service on a cracked screen (they tell you they won't start work for 3 weeks otherwise). This is on top of labor cost and the standard $30 they charge for "diagnostic," which amounts to checking a part number and running your computer's system diagnostic utility from what I can figure (hard to learn what they are actually doing, because they aren't communicative and respond with tech-guy condescension when you ask questions). I had to call 3 days later to remind them to put in the order for the screen. A week later I learned that they had gotten the wrong screen. After no news for several days, I called again, and they claimed that my screen was not available through any of their vendors, including the manufacturer (Lenovo). Being incredibly busy (mostly because my laptop was down), I trusted them that they were doing everything they could... until this went on for over 3 weeks. I finally called Lenovo myself, asked the right questions, and a screen arrived the next day. They were full of lame excuses, but it was clear the problem is that the techs are not interested in doing their jobs. Acted like they were saints for not charging the $60 labor, but I had already paid an extra $50 for service that never happened, because I had to do their job; I found the part, got it delivered, hand-carried it to them at the shop. I missed 3 weeks of production over these incompetent people not doing their job. read more

This is the thang. Technically, they are awesome. Honesty, again, awesome. Great loaner laptops if you need it. Nice, nice, straightforward GUYS at this shop. Now, a bit of the not so nice. You will PAY if you need your work done in less than two weeks. I'm talking 50 or more clams. But they deliver, and deliver well. Here's my biggest beef, and it hit a raw nerve. I'm a 58 year old woman, and I'm not stupid. However, when I bought a new Windows 8 laptop, and hated it, took my old laptop in to breath life into it so I wouldn't have to deal with W8, because I new Windows 8 SUCKED, the lovely, but VERY INAPPROPRIATE SASSY young woman told me to "keep up." Meaning, why in the world couldn't I handle W8. Well, missy snot, I already knew that W8 had, at best, mixed reviews, and most INFORMED people did NOT like it. And since that time, MS has been forced to make changes, and now, DEARY, MICROSOFT revenue and stock is tanking, partly because of this program that most people do not want.
