Proctors is the most beautiful theater in the Capital District (Troy Music Hall is a close second). But... The sound is terrible, unlike the Troy hall where the sound quality is world famous. I have attended two musicals, Phantom of the Opera, and Les Mis, and the sound was terrible. I thought that the first time I went the quality was poor due to my choice of seats (nose bleed section) but on the second go round I was very close to the stage and the sound was no clearer. If you know the lyrics by heart then by all means shell out the money. But if you go not knowing the musical/play very well, I'd save the money and buy the CD. read more

One of the highlights of the Schenectady area. This is a wonderful venue to come and watch a play or show. Last time I came here was to see Beauty and the Beast, which was a great show. Prior to the show we walked around and saw many historical facts and cool articles about Proctors! I've been to a few shows at Proctors. I've had a good experience. It's generally reasonably priced, accessible, and convenient. It's small, but for the area is the perfect size. Seats are a little uncomfortable, squeaky, and have views easily blocked by bouffant hairstyles. If you're craving a Broadway show without the hassle of going to NYC, it's definitely worth trying. read more

I love that the Capital District has a venue for Broadway productions on tour. I further love that there's a decent coffee house in the lobby and the GE Theater showing wonderful movies for kids/families. I've taken my teenage son to see two musicals at Proctor's and have recently started taking my 7 y/o niece to see live performances. Couple this with unusual offerings like the recent showing of Metropolis, complete with a Wurlitzer organ and recovered footage and you've got an excellent all-around venue. Of all the live theater venues available in the Capital District, Proctor's is hands-down my favorite. When you consider that I don't own a car and getting to Proctor's is an hour on the 55, that's really saying a lot. read more

It's hard not to love Proctors Theater. It's not the cleanest, nor does it have the best acoustics or seating, but what it has its history and character. Hosting children's dance recitals, movies, comedy shows, and Off Broadway Shows, it stays busy year around, and keeps many businesses around it stocked with patrons. It's a big, beautiful old theater, kind of out of place around here. There's a lot of history here. Just look at the webpage. Probably the best place to see a show around here that I've seen so far. Seats in the front are the most expensive, of course, but if you sit on the wings in one of the front rows, the price might be half of the sitting in the middle. You'll just have a weird angled view. Beautiful old theatre with great programming , we watched a fabulous high school production of Les miserable and it was excellent

Too bad they don't have a no star review. We bought tickets and when I called not receiving them they had no record of them. So a few hours later they said they had 2 in the orchestra pit area, and would send them Fed Ex so we would have them on time. Well we received them thinking they were for the Sunday Show we wanted and found out the day we arrived they were for Saturday. With being a day late and an hour late into the show they wouldn't even seat us. Well I am not one to complain, but this was just too much. No tickets, no seats, no wheelchair meeting me as promised and no record of my $300 purchase on my credit card. Was it a one time thing NO the couple in front of us were sent the wrong tickets too. Whoa. There's a little bit of a perhaps unintentional bait and switch going on here. Proctor's Theatre advertises first run movies once in a while. Tonight we drove out to see "Transsiberia." But the film was shown in the smaller, less comfortable GE theatre using a subpar digital projection system. So phone first before going. And go to an early show if you intend on dining afterward: downtown Schenectady goes to sleep when Wheel of Fortune is over. OTOH, the lobby and Muddy Cup coffee shop people are nice and the walls are filled with odd junk highlighting regional anomalies, like part of a plane that flies to Antarctica facing a tiny photograph of John Sayles. We were also surprised to see the William Randolph Hearst Education Room. No info on Marion Davies was offered, though. read more

Great place, great acoustics, great staff, awesome concert. It's like a lot of 100+ year old theaters around the U.S., I've been to the State Theater in Portland, Maine the Ventura Theater in Ventura, California...They're all great. Would love to go back. read more

Absolutely great theater! Was recently there to see the Trey Anastasio documentary "Between Me And My Mind" (incredible movie) and it was shown in the imax theater, it was awesome. Small, but comfortable, a bar INSIDE the room with liquor/beer everything. The viewing was just so good, and the walk from the parking garage was a breeze. The location is awesome, so many places to eat before a show (we chose Bomber's - meh) but easy to navigate around town when everything is walking distance. It was also cool that there were other shows happening at the theater at the same time, fun to see different crowds of people enjoying their time :) can't say enough good things! Have to also add, tickets were dirt cheap! The film was also being shown at Colonie Center and Crossgates and Proctor's had the best prices and the best way to see it. Very intimate and being able to drink during the movie was just A+++ read more

I can't believe I've never reviewed Proctors before. This is a great place to see a show, what's more is that they are loyal to their repeat customers and those who have season tickets. They even aren't too picky if you missed an entire year as long as they have a record of your regular attendance. The coffee is actually pretty decent (I don't mean the one in the lobby I mean the 1 dollar cup!) The price for snacks is great. I guess my only complaint is that the wine cups make me nervous of spilling and I want them to be much bigger. They usually have a great line up each year. I'm always impressed with what they have to offer and my experience while I'm there. read more

I've seen a variety of events at Proctor's over the years, from plays and traveling Broadway shows, to musicians and comedy acts. It's a beautiful theater, with plenty of available parking, and many restaurants and bars nearby to hit before (or after) an event. As a subscriber to their Broadway series, I am always pleased with how easy it is to get in and out of the theater, the cleanliness of the venue and the friendliness of the usher staff. I definitely recommend checking out this vintage theater which has been lovingly maintained. read more

Just returned from the Democratic Rural Conference that was held at the Proctor Theater and I have to say I was impressed with the venue. The GE theater was the spot we used for training sessions and then again in the evening for the Governor's reception, the only negative thing one could say is it is dark (especially for elderly people) but it is a theater and it does have theater lighting. Oh, one more negative, the bartenders were a tad snotty but they work for One Reputation catering Co. Overall an impressive venue with a bohemian vibe, I like it. read more

Great time seeing Once a few years ago and Rock of Ages this weekend! Loved the bathroom attendants during intermission which allowed everyone to get in and out quickly. I also loved that drinks were affordable! Only critique would be that for Rock of Ages I felt the sound was a little low... but that could have been the Rock of Ages people. What can I say? I grew up in Schenectady. I graduated from pre-school (I'm not sure WHY Magic Kingdom had a pre-school graduation) and High School on that stage. I remember when in my freshman year of High School Britney Spears was playing there and I wasn't at the guilty pleasure point with her yet so I didn't try to go. The Mariah Carey "Hero" video is shot on that stage. It's a piece of Schenectady history and I love it. Plus I always loved seeing movies I'd refuse to pay full price for there. I've wanted to come to this theater for a while now and I finally got my chance back in February of this year. Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood from Whose Line is It Anyway? were doing their improv show here and it was a blast from start to finish. Complimenting this was the beauty of this theater. I'm a sucker for old theaters and I really loved the design of this place. The seats are also very nice and comfy. We were all the way in the back of the orchestra seats and we still had a great view of the stage. The acoustics were great as well and there is parking in a garage just down the street (it was free when we went on a Saturday night). Overall, it's a beautiful theater and a place that you will definitely enjoy seeing a show. read more

This is my favorite venue in the area. It's a hike from Loudonville, but it's always worth it. I've seen classical music, dance, broadway tours, speakers, etc. here and it's always amazing, no matter what. It's the one venue that can really attract big time entertainment every year. Tickets are very reasonably priced and the second run movies playing here for when I used to go 2.50 was amazing, because it's an old theater from when the town catered to real movie stars and the like. It's very roomy, immaculate, and the staff is always helpful and courteous. I've never had a bad time here. It's a large, wide, classic theater with no real nosebleed seats, and the acoustics are very good. read more

Sound issues galore at Waitress the musical. It was difficult to hear the singers over the band which was playing on stage also in a few songs. Spotlight seemed to have gotten his/her cues mixed up a few times too. I hope the sound issues are rectified before the band's visit comes to town. I like to hear the actors. read more

Over the weekend, I came here with a friend to see CATS -- and to be honest I was BLOWN AWAY by the beauty of this theater. But warning - keep in mind that the seats were made when people were... a little bit.. smaller, so the seats and spacing is not what you'd expect from a modern-day theater. Shows are ok. MacHaydn theatre productions are much better. Proctors shows often seem like the actors are tired and bored. The online ticket buying fees are ridiculous. $8 for an electronic ticket. Buying online saves them money and should be cheaper than buying with a person. Many other choices for entertainment. Proctors swallowed up Capital Rep and the whole organization is now just a corporate factory in my opinion. read more

This is absolutely the poorest ticketing app I've ever seen. They'll show you empty seats but deprive you of the ability to choose them. You can only ask for "suggested" seats which are completely anything except what you want. Click over and over and over if you want, I promise you will NEVER get the seats you can see are open, you want to pay for but will be forever denied you. Oh by the way try calling the box office. Proctors is one of the most beautiful-est places in the capital region. I've seen a few plays there and everytime it's honestly better than the next. When people say "there is no bad seat in the house it is 100% true here. I have sat in the balcony, the last rows and throughout the middle of the bottom floor, all were great! Also the staff are awesome. I always go places with a number of questions and struggle with this being the type of person i am but no worries ... they will answer! The staff takes their time and even when you have the silliest questions (I asked if they thought whoppi Goldberg would be in the audience of the color purple ) & they answered truthfully (No) without judgement. They do have a parking garage that I believe has free parking but I've only parked on the street (clearly I like the struggle) & that's annoying but it's a battle I personally choose. read more

I recently purchased tickets for Piano Battle for Sunday, February 11, 2018, at 3 pm. Unfortunately, the weather was uncooperative and the roads were a sheet of ice, especially where we live, which boasts a 1300 foot altitude. When I called the theatre, a recording said that none of the performances were being cancelled due to the weather, clearly demonstrating that they recognized the hazardous conditions. When I called for a refund or at least a credit, as we attend productions at Proctors frequently, I was told that "unfortunately" there is nothing they can do. I am somewhat appalled at this policy, which is particularly punitive to people living on Social Security. I would appreciate a response, especially one that demonstrates some compassion. read more

The Addy is the name of the third floor performance space at Proctor's. This intimate venue was the perfect place to see the show Young Dr Jekyl. A wonderfully talented cast beautifully wove a creative story with music that transported the audience to a different time and place. read more

I love all the shows I've been too, especially the oldies. However, the sound is getting so loud that I have to wear earplugs. I know we are getting older but it's ridiculous. Last Saturday at the Vinyl show people next to us moved far back due to the noise level in the balcony. I used cotton in my ears and it was still loud but tolerable. It was great music but just too too loud. Also, I agree with the other reviews that the long wait in the ladies room just takes too long. They need more bathrooms. The theater is beautiful, the staff is wonderful and the performances are great! If they could lower the volume I would give them a 5 star. read more

First, I understand these are difficut times, BUT. Okay, so you reschedule a show I bought tickets for because of COVID, BUT that date is more than two years out! Sorry that's not acceptible. I don't wan't to leave my money on account, I don't want to donate because, right now, I need it more than you, so "yes" I want a refund. I was originally going to give two stars due to their lack of leg room. I am 5'10" with a 29" inseam. Not tall. Yet my knees are wedged up against the seat in front of me. Didn't they just renovate? Some rows have more leg room but no matter what seats you purchase the ticket agent always says there is plenty of leg room. After my experience this weekend attending the Grinch, two stars is way too generous. A couple approached us at our seats saying we were in their seats. Sure enough they had the same seat numbers as us. When the usher came, he says we all have to go to the box office. Felt like I was being sent to the principal's office. Understandable, yet aggravating as the show was just beginning. As we exited the theater, the usher told me to wait here as my girlfriend purchased the tickets and only needed her. I thought, OK, I can fill her in on what she was about to miss. No sooner had the other usher at the door closed it behind us, she wouldn't let me back in. She said something to the effect that is what I get for showing up late. Didn't she just see us walk through the door seconds ago? I made my way to the box office. Our tickets turned out to be Friday's show, not Saturday's show so the other couple were escorted back to their seats. Yet another usher overhearing the exchange made a negative comment about us showing up on the wrong night. I told her they screwed up our tickets. She said "I'm only going by the information we have". Yes they screwed up our tickets. We originally purchased Friday night, then changed to Saturday. Fortunately for us, Proctors has a record of this and the woman at the box office said at least four times, I don't know why this happened. But do you think any one of the people we had an interchange with offered an apology? Not a one. We ended up back in the show missing the first 20 minutes and sitting in the back. But these seats did have decent leg room! Never again. There are plenty of other venues in the area that have reasonable ticket prices and provide at least some modicum of customer service. read more

I went here when I was 9 years old to watch Cats. It was a wonderful play and I still remember it. Probably will never forget. This is a place to bring your family or go on a date. Its a beautiful place and they have many good plays and entertainment. read more

What's nice about Proctor's is it gives the Capital District a chance to see Broadway plays from the comforts of the Capital Region. What is not so great about Proctor's is the sound quality - every play I have seen here where I have sat in the balcony, I have had a very hard time understanding half of what is happening. Concerts and comedians I have never had an issue with, but the musicals are where the real issue has been. This has been most notable when I have seen both Les Mis and Wicked at Proctor's. Obviously when you see a show at Proctor's you do have to take it with a grain of salt and keep in mind it is not Broadway and you should not hold it up to the same caliber, but when both of these shows are known to be the best, I expect to at least come out understanding the story line, understanding what the actors say or sing, and enjoying myself. When I saw Wicked, I had at least already seen it on Broadway so I knew the plot, but this was unfortunately not the case for me when I saw Les Mis this weekend. I could barely understand the words over the poor speaker quality and it really made me miss what I am sure was a great story. All in all, the prices are decent for the show you end up seeing, but the sound quality in other theaters like Proctor's I have found to be much better. read more
