I can't stress enough how lucky we are to have the Palace Theatre in Albany. I've seen countless shows here, and it's about time I sing its praises for the Yelposphere and establish its place as a 5-Star venue in the 518. The Palace is one of those old theaters that just kind of takes your breath away when you experience it in all its glory. The Art Deco-inspired structure has been beautifully preserved, and walking through its doors is like talking a step back in time. Gilded Age anyone? Holy opulence. Though many changes have taken place since its opening, the Palace has retained most of its original design features, including an impressive brass chandelier in the main lobby, original murals painted by Hungarian artists Andrew Karoly and Louis Szanto and plaster beams in the fore-lobby painted to resemble carved wood. Most recently, I saw The Wood Brothers take the stage, and it might have been their biggest show in the 518 yet. I've seen this soulful folk trio twice before in the Capital Region: the first time at the egg-cellent Egg, and the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, but this might have been the biggest stage they played and they owned it! So if you're on the fence about splurging for a ticket the next time you see your favorite comic or indie band cruise through town and play the Palace, I highly suggest you call, "ACTION!" and buy yourself a memorable night out.

Beautiful theater in Albany for concerts, the architecture inside is stunning. It's great we still have these beautiful theaters still around to enjoy the beauty, and a perfect place to see a concert. Tonight was the legendary Judas Priest, heavy metal icons. They always perform brilliantly, the theater has great acoustics. Many concerts are played here by different types of artists, a beautiful theater to see a show!

Beautiful theater!! I came here twice this past month for the Russian Ballet's Nutcracker and for the Albany Symphony's Magic of Christmas concert. We had seats in different sections each time (orchestra vs loge), but the view and the acoustics were great each time (I personally enjoy the loge seating the best). The theater is beautiful inside and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Snacks and drinks are also pretty cheap and it's just a nice experience going to the Palace Theater. Extra tip - parking is free just down the street and it's super easy to get to a variety of restaurants downtown from the same free parking. You can also park in the Pump Station's lot for free and walk to the theater.

Always a class act. Good wines today- best I have ever had at this type of venue. PLUS they let ladies use the men's room as there were 85% women at "THERESA CAPUTO LIVE- the experience!" Love you Theresa. You do Good Work.

I've seen many shows at The Palace throughout the years, but the reason I'm writing this quick review is for the theater's support of The Kids of Albany's presentation of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. The Kids of Albany have been producing incredible shadow-cast versions of the cult classic for the past several years. If you are at all familiar with the film, you'll know that audience participation is heavily encouraged and includes hurling handfuls of rice, pieces of toast, and toilet paper all over the theater throughout the movie. If you walk into a theater that just showed Rocky, you'll know it. It takes an open-minded and tolerant operation to allow this kind of thing to happen inside of a historic and often restored theater. The Palace allows the Kids of Albany and their followers the chance to enjoy the beauty of one of the area's jewels...and then make a complete mess of it. Hats off to the entire Palace staff, but especially the folks that cleaned up after the show.

Staff is great, and very helpful!! The décor is absolutely beautiful. The paintings on the ceiling were breath taking. You can tell the theatre has been taken care of!

Ask the Community - Palace Theatre

    Parking easy and available?

Yes, 2 parking houses within 5 minutes walking time.

I was thinking about getting tickets all the way to the right in the orchestra section about a third of the way up from the stage can someone tell me if you can see the stage pretty good from there?

Yes you'll be able to see the stage just fine. All the seats here have a good view of the stage. That's a unique thing about the Palace is there's really no bad seat in the house. The balcony has a steep slope though so keep that in mind.

Now, it's a sight for sore eyes! Better sound system and LED lighting were among the upgrades. A little more seating. New seats and flooring. New wall coverings. The public was invited to check out the improvements at a free evening event. When you consider that the distinctive facility is about a half century old, the upgrades were overdue. The helpful ushers are not paid to be tour guides so I'm not sure how accurate their information was. Some ushers said the bathrooms were not renovated. The bathrooms I visited did have upgrades, but I cannot understand why the some of the original hardware including the old, chipped sanitary napkin receptacles were screwed back into the womens' bathrooms stalls. It seriously detracted from the overall appearance and seemed to be a bad penny pinching decision after so much money was spent. I can't tell you about the men's rooms. The men in our group of friends said they thought some work had been done. The Egg's unique shape was inspired by the half grapefruit that Gov. Rockefeller was eating during a planning meeting. In this day and age of large venues, it remains a more intimate setting. The Kitty Carlisle Hart theatre has a capacity of just under 1,000 seats and there's another smaller theater just below it. I was in the audience a few years ago when Pete Davidson did his stand-up act at the Egg. He complained about the small size of the venue. He added another show for same day just to make it worth his while. I came away offended by some of what he tried to pass off as humor. If performers like Davidson don't want to play the Egg again, I'm okay with that. It has great acoustics for fine artists of a whole different caliber. The Egg re-cracked open with aerial performances by Good Karma Studio and the DJ Hollyw8d. Looking forward to attending many awesome performances in this newly improved venue!

The lead talent was excellent, and all was well done. I ordered tickets online, and there's more regret: the staging was different from years past. I thought getting seats which seemed close but to the side would give us a good view, but no. The action was just in the center of the stage, and the sides of the stage blocked off/covered by scenery. It made it very difficult to see the whole ensemble, especially at the angle we were at. Literally, probably the quarter of seats on the left and right sides had difficulty seeing. If you go- sit in the very center.
