I love a show! I haven't been to the Palace a ton, and my experiences have been mixed, but over all I enjoy this theatre. As a plus sized woman, I find the seats to be very roomy and comfortable. The seats were very cushy and supportive and there was a ton of leg room. I'll go to more shows based on this alone. I think my issue is comparing this theatre to Proctors, which is a very different vibe. The Palace offers more lively shows with less of a strict seating policy. People are often up and down in their seats, there is often a lot of chatter in the crowd; and I think this threw me off my first visit, as I am used to being quiet and still in my seat until intermission. Parking is pretty easy with multiple options locally, as well as abundant street parking. Concessions were very pricy. The bathrooms are in the basement if you are on the main level, so that's a bit of a pain. I won't hesitate to book another show here! read more

This is a gorgeous theatre. The interior is beautifully decorated- from the carpet to the curtains and the paintings on the ceiling. It is a smaller venue and I don't think there's a bad seat in the house. Definitely go see a show there! I'm looking forward to coming back for another performance! read more

The Palace theater is absolutely spectacular. Besides being a historical work of art and wonder, it's a gorgeous and intimate venue for performances of all sorts. We had a good fortune of seeing Jerry Seinfeld here in 2023, Albany symphony, Third Eye Blind, Joshua Bell, Kevin, James, and the list goes on and on. If there is an issue with the sound, it is not the venue. It's an issue related to the music producer for the artist performing. Alternatively You can go to the concrete jungle acoustic disaster, MVP Arena. The Palace was built in 1930 during an American era when craftsman from Europe built marvels. Don't miss it! read more

There's just something about an old theatre. The Palace Theatre is a beautiful space to see everything from plays to the symphony to the best live band in the universe (My Morning Jacket) and feel like you're doing it in style the whole time. We've seen a bunch of shows here (we're mostly coming into town for live music) and it's always easy to get something to eat and drink nearby before the show, get parking and enjoy the walkability of Albany. Crowd control is smooth and quick, but I always feel safe and I find that the ushers and concessions staff, security and everyone else enjoys and takes pride in what they're doing. We've never run into anyone obnoxiously drunk or otherwise chemically altered and the acoustics are great. There's something about the dichotemy of having your face melted at a rock show while in such gorgeous surroundings that you just don't get at SPAC or the Pepsi/Knickerbocker/Times Union whatever it's called. Those venues are great and have their benefits, but this one is also gorgeous and the people are exceptional. read more

I have to say the theater is lovely. View of stage was great. The SOUND WAS AWFUL for the Golden Girls performance. Could not understand what they were saying. I was in balcony. Someone kept yelling they couldn't hear as well and nothing was done to fix the issue. It was a wasted trip and the actors looked like they were doing a good job. We left after first intermission. Only stayed because we thought they would fix the sound issue during admission and we were so disappointed...they did not. read more

I can't stress enough how lucky we are to have the Palace Theatre in Albany. I've seen countless shows here, and it's about time I sing its praises for the Yelposphere and establish its place as a 5-Star venue in the 518. The Palace is one of those old theaters that just kind of takes your breath away when you experience it in all its glory. The Art Deco-inspired structure has been beautifully preserved, and walking through its doors is like talking a step back in time. Gilded Age anyone? Holy opulence. Though many changes have taken place since its opening, the Palace has retained most of its original design features, including an impressive brass chandelier in the main lobby, original murals painted by Hungarian artists Andrew Karoly and Louis Szanto and plaster beams in the fore-lobby painted to resemble carved wood. Most recently, I saw The Wood Brothers take the stage, and it might have been their biggest show in the 518 yet. I've seen this soulful folk trio twice before in the Capital Region: the first time at the egg-cellent Egg, and the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, but this might have been the biggest stage they played and they owned it! So if you're on the fence about splurging for a ticket the next time you see your favorite comic or indie band cruise through town and play the Palace, I highly suggest you call, "ACTION!" and buy yourself a memorable night out. read more

Beautiful theater!! I came here twice this past month for the Russian Ballet's Nutcracker and for the Albany Symphony's Magic of Christmas concert. We had seats in different sections each time (orchestra vs loge), but the view and the acoustics were great each time (I personally enjoy the loge seating the best). The theater is beautiful inside and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Snacks and drinks are also pretty cheap and it's just a nice experience going to the Palace Theater. Extra tip - parking is free just down the street and it's super easy to get to a variety of restaurants downtown from the same free parking. You can also park in the Pump Station's lot for free and walk to the theater. read more

Let me start off by saying that I really like the Palace Theater and I will definitely be back. That's not usually what you see from a 3 star review, but it's legitimate. I'm serious. The seats are usually really great. Most recently, I sat pretty far back with a general admission ticket and I could see the front very easily. The sound at the show wasn't the best, but it wasn't terrible by any means. This review is mostly for the staff and general security at the Palace. We lost a phone the other night, without the "Find My Phone" feature set up, of course, and when I first approached a guy at a desk out front and a security personnel, they were both immediately a little rude and negative. However, the guy in front of the office was very nice once we started talking and he was very helpful. I wish he was the only person we interacted with because he was lovely. We knew pretty much for a fact that my boyfriend's phone was still in the Palace, but it definitely could have been stolen. It was just unlikely and the staff said that people lose phones there all the time, that it will probably show up at some point especially when the cleaners come in. We stayed a bit longer after the show to look, but we just couldn't find it, so we left them my phone number and went home. Thing is, it was the day before my boyfriend's birthday (and I made him go to this show with me) and losing a phone is stressful for anyone, but especially stressful if you're trying to get together with your friends for your birthday. No one could reach him and so I gathered phone numbers from friends of friends and tried my very best to get everyone together the next day (That's not the Palace's fault - they had no idea - this is just context and I'm on a roll). So magically the next night, after calling the Palace a few times during the day to find out that they still did not find the phone, my boyfriend's friend gave us his old phone. Defeated, my boyfriend started doing silly birthday things with his friends and tried to forget about the phone while I set up this new/old phone. While trying to wipe the phone, I noticed that his friend had "Find My Phone" setup so I had an idea. We wiped the phone and signed in with my boyfriend's google account, immediately setting up the find my phone feature and GUESS WHAT? GUESS WHAT!!! His old phone was right there on the app and we located it by GPS at the Palace theater. It was ridiculous. Technology is so cool (and so creepy). Elated, and feeling like the best girlfriend ever knowing the phone only had 10% battery, I called the box office and let them know that we knew the phone was there. I asked them if we could please go in and look for it after the show since we can set it to ring with the app, but they said we were not allowed in unless we bought a ticket. This may be their unbreakable set of rules, but to be fair, we had purchased a ticket for the same show the night earlier and we weren't trying to do anything sketchy. Also, someone could have chaperoned us if it was a security issue. I understood that they didn't want us to disturb the show that particular night and that wasn't our intention, but they would have rather left it up to chance that eventually the cleaners would come, that they could call us on Monday, but by Monday, that phone would be dead and our chance to ever find it, gone. So considering we knew exactly when the show ended and when people would be done filing out since we went to the exact same show the night before, I rang the phone at that time with a number to call for the person who found it. A wonderful kind cleaner ended up finding it wedged between seats where they otherwise would never find it and we met up with him at the palace to return it... ...where we were met with a rude "can I help you" yell as if we were intruders by a staff member. Yeah so we got the phone back with no help from the staff and it was very frustrating (but also very cool). I understand that it's not their fault and that since this happens "all the time," they need to follow an exact policy, but with all due respect, phones are around $1500 now with a lot of personal information on them and yeah, it actually is a big deal, and if we hadn't rang that phone at that exact time, it may have been lost in the Palace forever. So, some key tips here: 1) Great views from whatever seat 2) Hold onto your phone VERY CAREFULLY and NEVER LET IT OUT OF YOUR SIGHT 3) You can setup "Find My Phone" from another phone with your google account. Pretty dope. 4) You should still come here to watch shows. 5) Also definitely don't buy tickets online. They will charge you an extra $13 a ticket for no reason. Go to the box office in person. 6) When you call the box office, hit 0 immediately to speak with a person and not a robot. Good luck! read more

When I first visited Albany a couple years ago, I distinctly remember going on a jog through the downtown area and passing "The Palace" sign. The corner reminds me of the movie theater in Westwood (next to UCLA), which is constantly used for premieres/etc, with a huge light-up sign, marquee, and the promise of something wonderful inside. When I first attended a show this month, I was not disappointed! This is such a beautiful venue - I'm a sucker for an elaborate chandeliers, and there were PLENTY to ogle both in the lobby and in the main auditorium. There are bourgie opera-house style boxes inside along the sides, as well as a mezzanine. The style is like that of an old Broadway theater. In fact, this theater is so gorgeous that I am sometimes confused by the gigs that are hosted here. I went to a GRiZ show here, when it was overtaken by me and my fellow EDM-heads in fishnets and tie-dye, with people overflowing into the aisles and jumping around to the flashing lights like lunatics, and then a few days later to a much different crowd seeing a John Mulaney/Pete Davidson comedy show. In both cases, the sound was great, security was polite but effective, and I had a great time. I'll be back for Ron White in a few months - can't wait to see what that crowd is like :) All of the seats are essentially "good seats" - even from the very sides of the Orchestra section, you have a very clear view of the stage. This takes the pressure off when choosing seats! Can't wait to be back for the Broadway-style ambience and the always-incredible entertainment! read more

Last Saturday, I attended the John Mellencamp show at The Palace. First off, I must say, the place is gorgeous. Like a smaller version of The Beacon Theatre in New York City. I don't know when it was renovated, but it is so pretty and ornate. The staff was very friendly and courteous. Location of the venue is perfect....right next to a parking garage, which was free for concert attendees. What I didn't like was the audience. I know you have really no control on how people behave, I get that. But I have to get this out and make you aware. Watching people take pictures and videos on their cell phones, after warnings have been issued, is very off putting. I did see a few ushers tell people no pictures, and the phones were put away. But a few minutes later, the same people pulled out the phones and resumed shooting video and snapshots. During the 2nd song of Mellencamp's set, beer started coming down on my girlfriend and me, from the balcony. The constant up and down of people going out for alcohol, coming back and getting in the way, is annoying and disrespectful to the artist. I understand beverages bring in needed money. But there has to be some kind of policy. Maybe close the bars during the main act.It seems like a lot of people are treating this like a night out rather than a concert. If you want to drink and talk, go to a bar. Even John Mellencamp was annoyed by it. He tried to tell a story, about his 100 year old grandmother. He couldn't even get through it because the crowd was yelling out phrases that demanded an answer. So mid story he said, and I quote, "This is the 120th show I've played on this tour, and it's the only time I couldn't finish the story....Fuck it. I'm just going to play the song" The topper was a heavily intoxicated woman yelling and shrieking right behind me every minute of the concert. When I asked her to stop, she gave me the finger and said it's a concert....get over it. IT was to the point where I could not hear the music. I asked her husband to help out with the situation, who appeared to be used to her antics and just shook his head. She tapped me on the shoulder to give me more grief and finally her husband stepped in and whipped out his police badge and said, "If you have a problem with this, take it up with management." I've been to about 500 concerts in my life time. All up and down the east coast, and even one on the west coast. This, by far, was the worst experience I've ever had. If the tickets hadn't cost be around $200.00, I would have left. Before the show, I was looking through the flyer that was handed out, and saw Chris Cornell is coming on July 1st. My girlfriend really wants to see him and I said we could go. After what happened on Saturday night............NO WAY !!! Maybe it's the Albany crowd ?!?!? But that could be a rash generalization. But I remember back in February seeing Bruce Springsteen at the Times Union Center. And even Bruce told some rude people in the pit, "If you want to talk, go outside. With that being said, I will never return to the city of Albany for a concert. read more

I've seen many shows at The Palace throughout the years, but the reason I'm writing this quick review is for the theater's support of The Kids of Albany's presentation of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. The Kids of Albany have been producing incredible shadow-cast versions of the cult classic for the past several years. If you are at all familiar with the film, you'll know that audience participation is heavily encouraged and includes hurling handfuls of rice, pieces of toast, and toilet paper all over the theater throughout the movie. If you walk into a theater that just showed Rocky, you'll know it. It takes an open-minded and tolerant operation to allow this kind of thing to happen inside of a historic and often restored theater. The Palace allows the Kids of Albany and their followers the chance to enjoy the beauty of one of the area's jewels...and then make a complete mess of it. The Palace itself is beautiful. I've seen a few shows here over the years. Most recently I went to see John Mellencamp. Two seats with fees, etc. about $270. Not cheap. I was so excited to see him again. He's a great performer and he showed that Saturday night, playing all the hits from the past and some new ones. The audience for this particular show was loud and obnoxious to the point it interrupted John's performance. They were loud and disrespectful. He was telling a story and was so rudely interrupted he didn't finish it. He didn't give an encore either. Very disappointing. Not sure I would pay that to see a show there again. I'm sure John won't be back. Thanks Albany for showing how rude and obnoxious you can be! read more

I love this place. I usually am here several times a year for their discount "Classic Movie" nights. Tickets are $5, you get to sit anywhere you want (upstairs or downstairs), and concessions are cheap. It used to be $2 water and $2 popcorn, but they have increased their prices a little bit. Still, it is cheaper than a regular theater. And the movies? I love them. The "classics" could be anything from Casablanca to Ghostbusters to National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation to the Sound of Music. I go here to watch movies even when I own them and could watch them at home on DVD. It is an experience. Occasionally, they actually run old film and once the film jammed and they had to restart. Just like the old days. Also, the show classic advertisements before the show and sometimes classic commercials from the same time period as the movie (ex: 1980's commercials before Back to the Future). The seats are comfy and I have a favorite. I am usually the first person in and always rush to get my favorite chair! Then I wait 45 minutes for the movie to start. Yes, it is worth it! We have also seen actual shows here (David Copperfield's magic show, the Albany Symphony Orchestra, the Nutcracker Ballet, etc.) and because it is so comfortable in the seats the shows were very enjoyable. The Troy Music Hall and Proctors Theater also feature musical concerts and sometimes classical movies but their seats are tiny and cramped... especially important in the winter when you are wearing bulky clothes. read more

It's a super cool theater from the outside but if you need to grab tickets from the box office, remember it's two doors up from the lobby entrance! The venue itself is huge and has great architecture as well as amazing sound; I couldn't have picked a better place to see a show. The seats were comfortable and the ushers were super polite and nice. Victor was right on point when he stated that the seats are on an extreme angle; I was wearing boots and really had to watch when I manuvered up and down the aisle. The Palace is gorgeous, special, a delight acoustically and just neat to attend. However the box office, websites and telephone system gives the impression it hasn't been updated since it opened. Ok, I get it, COVID. But I am sorry that is not an excuse for having incorrect information on about every platform when most of your staff is working most likely on computers, remotely. Or going through the telephone prompts and it says press 8 for assistance and you are met with that's an incorrect entry---That pretty much sums up their whole customer facing interaction infrastructure. The hours are down to nothing, but you'll never know what they are anyway. Making it nearly impossible to save on fees by purchasing in person. Just close the box office completely and waive the fees. People want to support the arts but you are making it hard. Not to mention when you change venues the morning of the show and give no explanation of why. When I asked the Times Union Center (name change pending) if they too found out about the AJR show being changed the morning of, they said no we knew 3 days ago. So again you failed the customers terribly. I was lucky enough to read my email the morning of, but I met a few who did not. read more

I've always been a big fan of The Palace. The first time you walk into this place it will hit you: this place is a relic. The decor is reminiscient of the early days of theater, when it was a real luxury to be able to even be IN a theater. Carved moldings, balconies, the painted ceiling that looks like clouds -- even now, having been to my fair share of shows, it's still quite beautiful. The balcony seats are a little crazy. I'd advise anyone who doesn't like heights or gets vertigo easily to avoid these. Even so, the sound up there is still fantastic. Especially attractive is the Palace's plans to revive their movie showings. I just got back from seeing The Godfather there, and WOW. How enjoyable! read more

The Palace Theatre is an beautiful place with great decor. The whole place just makes you feel fancy and warm inside. The seats are fine, but they have gold plaques on them which are simply amazing. Bottom line, this place is nice, but the alcohol policies are terrible. I was at a stand up comedy performance, and the there were so many people at an extreme level of intoxication just in my immediate area. Not only that, but these people were walking to their seats after being served trays of 4 beers each. Sorry, but if you're a nice place, binge drinking shouldn't be allowed. To make matters worse, some of these drunks were loud and disruptive, and when a patron asked them to quiet down, they threatened them with violence. This was all in ear shot of not one, but 2 ushers who did nothing to address the situation. I didn't feel comfortable and I didn't feel safe. This place really needs to address these types of issues. read more

I love The Palace. They get some good comedy tours once in a while. But mainly because they show old movies for $5 on Mondays. Something about watching a movie on film and seeing all the flaws is so much better than digital projectors. Yea, they have old school seats that don't recline with no cup holders and you are right on top of the person next to you but they don't build classic places like this anymore and I'm all about nostalgia. read more

3.5 Stars really. No major gripes, but nothing about Theater really great either. We went 2 nights in row (Alice Cooper, Aussie Floyd) and say in Balcony and Orchestra. Balcony VERY steep steps. Good sight-lines. Orchestra easier to navigate, also good sight line. If go back will definitely do the Orchestra as the Balcony steps a bit scary (that's without drinking). Sound was good both areas. Staff ok, not ball busters, more helpful in Orchestra. Lobby area small, typical overpriced stuff so avg. Parking - there is a Lot couple blocks away, but both nights we drove up block couple times and lucked into a spot on Street which was both closer and easier when leaving. Decent Bar/Restaraunt across street -crowded (as expected) but had decent amount of places sit outside and Public benches. Ate there for second show - the long waiting list went fast and though a bit cramped food was decent and not outrageously priced (they are so close to Palace thought it would be) (I think I wrote a review on it back then). Overall - Decent venue for a concert. We like old venues like this and frequent many closer to us (Tarrytown Music Hall, Capital in Portchester, Paramount - both in Hudson Valley and VT). This one probably closest in design to Capital (Portchester) But is slightly bigger. read more

I'm surprised this has not been reviewed yet, as it is THE place to see theater and shows in the Albany area. Tori Amos just did a couple shows here recently (or it's upcoming). The seating is at a fairly extreme angle; walking up the balcony row is like climbing a mountain. If you have height anxiety I really warn you not to grab seats in the balcony area, you'll feel it immediately. The theater itself is grand and large, a heyday leftover from more glamorous times; the decor is from years ago and the entrance, nicely situated on a curve/intersection/corner, is prominent. It's comparable to Proctor's, although i really enjoy Proctor's for the incredible variety they usually can bring each season; the Palace I feel is more for concerts and music oriented things. read more

With a marquee that is desperately trying to illuminate the sadly depressed capital of New York, this beautifully restored theater is well worth attending. Free nearby garage parking on event nights if you can't find a spot on the street. Decent restaurants, bars, and a coffee shop all within an easy walk. Extra star for the shockingly ample seating. Nothing you would ever expect from a theatre of its time. Went to see the Russian Ballet perform the Nutcracker. Only complaint of the night was that there was not the traditional flickering of the lights during intermission, signaling time to return to your seats. The Palace is a beautiful theater. Perfectly restored. I love the marquee and the beautiful work on the ceiling and walls. The sound is good and the ushers are friendly. Unfortunately, the lines for beer were SOOOOOOOOOOO long. It took 20 minutes to get to the front of the line at the upstairs bar. There seems to be space to set up another bar on the opposite side of the upstairs - why don't they do it? It kind of ruins the show when you and your friends want a beer but you have to miss half a set of music to buy one. They only cost $5 (for Newcastle!), but I'd rather pay $7 and have another bar to fix this MAJOR line issue. read more

I truly love this venue. As a Phish fan and a member of the jam band/Grateful Dead world I've seen many a show here. From Dark Star Orchestra, Trey Anastasio, TAB, Primus, Umphrey's McGee, Twiddle, Ghosts is the Forest, Some of those bands multiple times.. the sound (as long as you're downstairs) is great. The architecture and beauty of the inside of this building is gorgeous, it's really a work of art. The staff is always very friendly and it's never a problem or a long time to get into a show at all. My qualms are the sound in the balcony, that's usually pretty terrible if I'm being honest, but I always get floor tickets for everything anyway, and the bathroom situation.. I loathe that it's down an entire nother set of stairs. It's tiring and annoying. I once saw a guy got into a small brawl and then literally get punched so many times that his face was concaved and we all thought he was dead? Kind of a show killer, staff didn't seem to notice until it was over. But all in all, this is one of my favorite venues in the area! read more

Reasonably priced tickets for good shows here at the Palace. It's a smaller, old-school theater that doesn't really have a bad seat in the house. The stadium seating on the lower level could stand to be more steep, but it's enough to help if you're vertically challenged or if someone seated in front of you has big hair. In contrast, the balcony is VERY steep and lacking in railings. I'm not normally afraid of heights, but I avoid going up there at all costs because I'm pretty sure I will tumble over the edge. And like any older theater, the seats at the Palace are more narrow, less cushy, and lacking leg room compared to the newer construction we've become accustomed to. In that sense, it's sort of like an air plane with live entertainment. read more

I used to love going to concerts here but they have really let their security get so bad they might as well not have any. Security does not prevent people from rushing to the front of the stage so don't bother buying front row - just buy any cheap ticket and push your way down the aisles. Also, there is a ledge in the upper left balcony that used to only be for staff but now they let crowds gather up there and it becomes like a bar atmosphere where everyone stands around and talks (shouts) over the music. Even worse, it can become a mosh pit, depending on the band, so if you buy tickets there, be prepared to have drinks spilled over you and don't expect to enjoy the music with all the talking/shouting that occurs with the mob mentality of a group of intoxicated people. read more

This place is a gem. Old school, early 1930s movie house, turned concert venue. Really great design, sightlines, and sound. I went out of my way to come here and it was worth it. Reasonably priced beers, but the lines are LONG. I would definitely recommend this place. read more

I've been to many events at the Palace. The most recent event was the Rick Wakeman/Jon Anderson show in October of 2011. That is where they lose a star. The place was freezing! Even Jon Anderson, who was standing under the stage lights, thought it was cold! Granted, the place was half empty, but still. However, I'm sure it's an arm and a leg to heat the place. Other than that it's an awesome place to see a show. We've seen two movies there "Rebel Without a Cause" and "It's a Wonderful Life". Definitely go see a movie there! Preferably an old classic. The beautiful old surroundings really add to the viewing experience. Definitely go to the Palace for a show, movie, whatever may be happening there, It's a great venue! read more

Definitely worth the 3 hour trip from Bridgewater MA! Fantastic venue. Love it! The staff was extremely courteous and friendly. The sound and the seating were top notch. The refreshments were reasonably priced. The parking garage in close proximity was nice too. Right off the highway, easy on & off. I'll definitely return! read more
