My guess is the fact that they staff the facility with mostly untrained senior citizen volunteers who like it toasty. The same volunteers have significant difficulty guiding people to their seats because they seem to be unfamiliar with rows and seat numbers. I don't know how many times some elderly usher stood in front of me, shining their flashlight in my face, confused about where people were supposed to sit. Oh well... Still an unbelievably beautiful place to see (and hear!) a show. Truly, not a bad seat in the house.

I was having difficulty buying seats online for our event so I ended up calling the ticket office. Whoever helped me was great. She was patient and helpful. Explaining that this was our first visit there, I wanted to ensure we had the best possible seats to enjoy the show as well as have a great overall experience. Based on our conversation I chose lower balcony, front row seats. I recall the agent asking if we had any issues with stairs which was good as there are quite a few stairs to get to the balcony. While we found the view to be great, the seats are horrible. They are extremely skinny and uncomfortable. I saw on the floor that they even use bistro chairs at the ends of some aisles. From the looks of things, the only comfortable seats would be the boxes along the walls as they looked to have chairs that you could move. The front-row balcony is not well suited for anyone over 6' tall as there is not enough leg room to sit with your legs in front of you. By the time the concert ended, my legs were cramping, my butt was sore, and my lower back in knots from trying to sit a bit sideways. Anyone who is slightly overweight will find the seating most uncomfortable. Aside from that, the theater is quite beautiful and the acoustics seemed to work well for our event. The staff is friendly and helpful. Exiting the theater went smoothly and quickly. We will definitely return but will try for box seats to see if they are more comfortable.

What a shame for an otherwise great institution, but that ruins it all for those who aren't aligned with management's/sponsors' political views.

At the Palace, the…read moreSuperheroes concert was held at 3:00--- at 2:00 the instruments were available upstairs for the children to try. The Albany Symphony with David Alan Miller were the heroes this time. Friendly ushers gave the children passports so the children could identify each instrument they tried and put a sticker next to it. This is a very well thought out project for children to keep their interest while they are being exposed to a variety of instruments. Free t shirts were given to the children as well. The people who assisted the children with the instruments were patient, knowledgeable and very encouraging. John Keal Music Store was responsible for providing the instruments. Then the concert started---- fabulous ----and so informative. An opera singer appeared in several roles engaging the audience in lively banter. David Alan Miller comes flying out in a Superman outfit to the delight of all. HE IS SUPERB. He entertained, engaged and conducted for one hour--- a great time frame for children. He ran off stage at the end of the concert and personally greeted all on their way out. The show was 20.00/adults and FREE for children. May 4, 3019 will be the next performance --- May the fourth/force be with you. All the audience are encouraged to dress up and enjoy it all. Put this on your calendar for sure.

The Massry Center is a great little theater right in the heart of Albany. We recently attended a…read moremusical performance in the theater and the acoustics in the venue are great, the common areas are bright and clean, and the ticketing/arrival process was seamless and easy. The Massry has teamed up with Troy Savings Bank Music Hall for their scheduling/ticketing this season and the line-up they are presenting is a wonderful, diverse selection of music. I am looking forward to attending future performances at this venue and seeing what direction they move to with their programming. With a number of bars and restaurants within walking distance, it's easy to make seeing a performance at the Massry into a true evening out.

As I was heading home, I passed the theater and saw on the marquee Mad Max was starting in ten minutes. Not the new Mad Max mind you, the original. Movies are meant to be seen on the big screen. Some are fine at home, but I don't have a man cave and I don't turn the sound up loud. Going into a theater is an immersive experience and really helps you to focus on the picture. Amazingly, even on a Saturday night, including myself there were only three people in the audience. And for a moment there I thought I was going to have a private showing. Part of that may be that despite the sign suggesting a 9:30 start time, the box office looked closed. And when I tried to suggest to the lady behind the concession stand that I'd like to see a movie, she didn't quite seem prepared to sell me a ticket. And when I asked where to head from there, she had to once again leave to find out. It was really quite odd. Also odd were the ratting and banging noises coming from the air conditioning grates in the ceiling of theater four. Once the action picked up, it wasn't quite as distracting as I had feared, but I hope they get it fixed. Much like I hope they get the theater cleanliness fixed. Because there was an empty soda can in the arm rest left over from a prior showing. Like I said, none of these things will prevent me from going back. I love seeing older movies on the big screen. But it could explain why the place wasn't more busy. I'll look forward to awarding this theater a fifth star as it grows and becomes a vital part of the community.

We attended "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder!" on opening night. I think it may have been…read moreonly the second or third live opera performance we've ever attended. The fact that it was in English, a comedy, and at a venue that we have been wanting to check out (Universal Preservation Hall), is what drew us to purchase tickets. The cast were all excellent, not only as singers, but also as actors. Each was able to portray their individual role quite realistically. There were a couple of comical mishaps that I was unable to decide if they were planned, or truly unexpected but well covered by the performer (e.g., loss of a mustache). Not to take anything away from the singers, I found it more difficult at times to understand what the female singers were saying during their higher ranges, but that may just be a function of my personal hearing. The approximately ten-piece orchestra was excellent. The choreography and use of the former church's layout was taken advantage of to its maximum. The physical setup of the seating is mostly good. Any seat in the balcony has a totally unobstructive view. Stadium seats on the main floor are also unobstructed and closer to the stage. It is a few of the rows of seats on the main floor along the sides of the stage that may have some obstructive views if the patrons sitting in the row in front of you interfere with your view. We definitely will consider attending future performances by Opera Saratoga when they are held at UPH.

I would have bought a drink during the concert but no way I would disrupt the people sitting in front or behind me or next to me to do so. Note to myself if I go again get aisle seats. They had 2 big screen video screens projecting the stage on the left and right of the stage. Once the people in front of me stood for most of the concert I saw more on the video screens than live center stage.

First thing to point out is you need to arrive early as possible because the lines get crazy long. Luckily for us we already purchased our tickets online and were able to get in line right away. Secondly, if you need to use the restroom or do anything else, be sure to do that before you wait in line for the hayride. There is no stopping once you get in line for the hayride and once you get off the hayride you have to go through all the haunted houses back-to-back. When you get in line, they corral the groups into what looks like a large steer pen until its that groups time to get on the hayride. It's about a 15-minute ride through the woods - you experience several scare zones, and gory scenes. There are a handful characters like Michael Myers that run out and climb on the back of the wagon trying to scare guests, which is more fun than actually scarry. Once the ride comes to a halt guests once again line up to go through all the haunted houses. The haunted houses were hit and miss. Some were better than others and all the staff in the houses did a decent job. We had a run-in with one security guy that was just a complete jerk and threatened to kick us out for trying to take a picture with a character stating that we touched them when we did not, the character actually grabbed on to us, so WTF! Once through the haunted houses there's not much left to do but walk around, grab a bite to eat and something to drink. It was a little expensive but decided to get a few hot dogs, Snapple ice teas, and some other light snacks; roughly $40 for this. The characters walking around and doing photo ops in this area were great and their costumes were also very good. They stayed in character the whole time we were at the park so this made for a spirited evening. My biggest complaint is there is not enough Porto-lets available or seating near the vendors for the sheer number of guests attending. They literally had 4-5 stalls available for the thousands that can potentially visit here nightly. Also, staff were not stocking the stalls with toilet paper. There were a lot of unhappy Ladies here that night.
