I needed the rear brakes replaced and honestly I was worried about the cost. Tony set up an appointment to first look at the brakes to see just how bad they were, and then worked in a discount for being military/veteran. I was amazed at how much the cost for the repair was. Needless to say, thanks to my fellow veterans for recommending Big A Auto because I will bring my car here for all her needs. At the time I thought maybe the college driver had let someone work on it so I paid it. My mistake as I didn't take time to think it thru. I know the folks I bought it from were honest and long time friends. Big A lied. We heard a bang and a scrape so immediately pulled over in to the first parking lot, which happened to be Vaughn's Automotive. We called the 24 hour emergency number and Matt came right over to help us! He patched us back together so we could safely drive until we can get a more full repair. I had a great reliable mechanic in Chicago, and after four visits here, I think I've found another good one. Liebold is located conveniently near downtown Galena. In those four visits, I've only spent about $50, which is a major coup with any mechanic. Two of of those were actual service, and two were my hearing noises, bringing the car in for diagnostics where they found nothing. Kudos to them for putting up with my "mechanichondriac" tendencies and of course with mouthing the noises for them when I bring the car in. Living in a small town, you know, word of one's eccentricities tends to get around fast, and I could get a "reputation." On all four visits, I was able to hang out and wait at their shop and peruse the nice variety of outdated magazines, watch and laugh at animal videos on my smart phone, so it was the auto service equivalent of fast food. After signing the paperwork, the appointment took over an hour for what was supposed to be a basic oil change and "inspection." When they were finished, the total suddenly jumped to $180, even though no one informed me of any change in price beforehand. They also did NOT put an oil change sticker on my windshield and didn't reset my service indicator on the dash -- basic steps any shop should complete. The worst part? The very next day, after washing my car, I noticed my entire underbody plastic shield hanging down, attached by only one or two bolts. This was not like that before I arrived, and it could have easily caused damage if it had come off while driving. Overall, the experience felt careless and unprofessional. I expected a routine oil change, not extra charges, missing steps, and potential damage to my car. I won't be returning.
