They do not have honest business practices here. My grandpa took his car here, he needed a new gas tank and they replaced it, and then 2 months later they say he needs a new line going to his gas tank, the line was rusted and broken. Couldn't they see how rusted it was when they had it on the hoist in the first place? They just wanted to charge him a few hundred in labor for another appointment. In fact, he told us "there's no labor here." Then when questioned about that, he said "it's $100 labor," then a couple minutes later he's reading it and says "it's $149 labor" and I said, "I thought it was no labor, then it was $100 labor, now it's $149 labor?" And he starts stumbling over his words and saying "well, I don't know, I just clicked on it." The pipe was rusted to the point it was flaking apart, so how does a "professional" not look at the other line, a much thinner pipe, and say "yeah that probably wont last much longer based on this other pipe, lets fix it now while we have it here," rather than wait 2 months and continue to nickel and dime him for labor? Let me also add that they never called to let him know what needed to be fixed and how much it would cost... The absolute best in car repair, I have two classic cars, and have been through a few mechanics in my time. Jeff Davis's mechanics can repair anything. They have fixed longstanding problems of electrical and mechanical nature in my 1980's Toyotas, Have repaired the liftgate on my commercial truck, worked on my 1983 Volkswagon van and serviced my wifes new Subaru. Every time the work has been excellent and very reasonably priced. He has yet to work on my scooter and bicycle, but if they had time, I would bring those to him as well. Not only are his mechanics the best in the mid-west but Jeff Davis himself is the nicest, most caring man I have met since moving here about a year ago. He is a great man, who is a good neighbor and outstanding businessman. I would NEVER go elsewhere. read more

Honest, good, affordable. When I had an urgent problem, had to take my kid to Iowa city for a special clinic there, they did a "bandaid" repair for something, a safe one to hold us over until we could get the parts replaced. It cost less than taking th family out for dinner, and lasted nearly a year! He cares more about getting you on the road and your bottom line rather than his. And will tell you when it is time to say goodbye when your car has had it. Won't pad the bill. Won't lie. And the repairs WORK. Never had to go back for the same problem with any car I had. Jeff Davis Auto Repair is my go to place. They are so friendly and helpful. I trust them with my car from oil changes to bigger issues that may happen throughout the course of owning a car. They are efficient and they always do an inspection of your vehicle during an oil change to make sure your car is safe to drive and that everything is working properly. It's a pain when something goes wrong with a car, but I'm always at ease knowing I have an awesome repair shop to take it to. read more

I recently sold my car to another person and the person requested to take my car to Jeff Davis Auto in Dubuque to have it inspected. I had never been to this place before and I insisted in going along because I wasn't just going to let someone take off in my car alone. Well we went to the shop that's out by John Deere and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised at how clean the shop and surroundings were. It's a very nice place and the fellow working the desk was very nice. I think their inspection was very honest and they explained what they found in detail. If I didn't have a place that I already take my car regularly, I wouldn't hesitate going to Jeff's shop. read more

I was recommended to go to Jeff Davis Auto Repair. My car was leaking antifreeze and it was obvious this was a somewhat of a serious issue. My car has 166,000 miles and it has been maintained well since I purchased it in 2004. When I arrived I described my issue to Jeff and when he began to speak he talked to me in a way that made me feel uncomfortable and the further we got into the conversation I started to feel like he was just after my money. He started to diagnose my car within the this 5-7 minute conversation. He assumed the intake manifold gasket is most likely out and will need replaced, costing approximately $850-$1000. Then he told me that if the intake manifold gasket is out that most likely the head gaskets will be going out soon. So instead of it being an intake manifold gasket issue it is now a head gasket issue. (before I went to Jeff's I watched a few youtube videos and learned that the head gaskets are not much further into the motor than the intake manifold gasket and if a mechanic was going down that far it would be another $100-$200.) Jeff told me that if I was going to replace the head gaskets the heads would need to be taken to a machine shop and planed, because I probably got the engine hot because of my antifreeze leak. I asked how much to do all of this he told my it would be around $1800. And depending on what they found when changing these gaskets the car might need a new thermostat or cam sensor and possibly other things and that would be even more. So now I started to question to myself who I was really dealing with because I just simply told him it was leaking antifreeze and they haven't even put it on the hoist yet. I ended up reluctantly leaving my car there and allowing them to diagnose the issues. He called me the next day and informed me that the intake manifold gasket needed to be replaced along with the fuel pressure regulator. He reminded me of the conversation about needing head gaskets and I asked him how much for just replacing the intake manifold gasket and fuel pressure regulator, he told me I was looking at $850 to $1000. I told him to hold off for now and that I would get back to him. I spoke with a mechanic friend who unfortunately was unable to help me with my issue because he was too busy at the time and he informed me that head gaskets were never really a big issue for the GM 3400 V6 and that if their is nothing wrong with the head gaskets not to replace them. I spoke with another co worker who recommended Nick Kamp's Auto Repair in Worthington. I called and spoke with Nick, told him about my diagnosis and he quoted me a price around $600 to fix the issues. So I went and picked up the car after a bill of $72 for just looking at it for 20 minutes (I understand you have to keep the lights on and heat the place but seemed a little heavy on just looking it over.) and took it to Worthington. I'm not questioning the quality of Jeff's work I question there ethics and honesty. I won't be going back. read more
