While she applied the color, I sat in the cool little gown to protect my clothes. Once she was done, she made me tea and I read a magazine while I was waiting. She finished with a wash, and an explanation of the blow dryer bar, which had free product to use, brushes, and a blow dryer. I finished my hair, and Tiara took an after picture of my roots. Their staff is mostly BIPOC and as an Indian person, I frequently would go to hair salons with people who did not look like me and did not understand the importance of a good hair cut as a Brown person. As soon as I arrived, I knew this place was going to be great. The ambiance and decor of the space itself is so welcoming. I walked in, but I suggest making an appointment. I got there when they opened so I did not have to wait, but they quickly got pretty busy. One of their stylists, James took me back and asked what I wanted. I recently cut my hair extremely short and I needed it cleaned up. I told him what I wanted and what I didn't want, specifying a specific vibe I wanted and he not only delivered, but was a delight to experience about 20 minutes with in conversation. Prior to going, I also checked out their website. Something I noticed on their websites that is cool is their space is accessible, you can request a silent hair cut, they are locally owned, and they have a 7 day fix-it policy, so if you leave and realize you want something different, you can go back and get it fixed! I came in for my usual gray coverage, and they did a GREAT job with the color. Unfortunately, the haircut was a very different experience. I showed the stylist a reference photo of my usual longer, layered cut. She said she wanted to even out my hair, which sounded completely reasonable, but she removed several inches without confirming how much length I was comfortable losing. I left with a short, rounded, mushroom-shaped bob that looked nothing like the reference and made my face look much rounder than I wanted. I was so mortified that I took a photo outside and sent it to my longtime stylist in Southern California, who replied, "whoa." I'm leaving three stars because the staff and atmosphere were lovely and the color was excellent. But I really hope the salon encourages clearer communication before making a major change in length. In the meantime, I'll be wearing a ponytail until it grows out.

However, my last appointment was disappointing for 2 reasons: 1. At my 3rd visit, Shun advised that I needed a trim, either at that visit or at the next visit. In my experience trims are about $15 and I usually get a trim every six weeks so I said go ahead and do it. Shun charged me $95 for a trim, the same price I paid when I got a style cut at my first visit 3 months ago. When I questioned this, I was told that a trim is a cut and a cut is a trim, they take the same length of time and expertise and that other stylists are unprofessional (I'm not sure why this last point was brought up). She even pulled up something on Google to prove her point, despite my 30+ years of customer experience to the contrary. 2. I specifically asked for my hair to be left longer in the front. I have a picture from a month ago showing my hair touching my collarbone; now it only reaches my chin, so the trim apparently went awry. Because my hair was curly when I left the shop I didn't realize this until I washed and styled my hair today. This revelation prompted me to write this review. I just checked another equally rated stylist's prices, who has tons more Yelp reviews than Corps D'Lite, and she charges $10 for a trim and $35-50 for a cut. My last stylist charged less than half of what Shun charges for the exact same 3 services; the only reason I stopped going to her is that I wanted to lighten my hair and she recommended I go to a colorist. So because I think it ridiculous to pay almost $100 for a trim every 6 weeks, as well as treating me like I'm clueless on what I should be charged for a trim, I won't be back.

Therefore, I will give her 1 star for this review. Unfortunately, Shun fails in many other areas of professional styling. She arrived 15 minutes late for my appointment. She took too long to style my hair, because she was busy making recommendations (upselling) additional services. Thus, I was 30 minutes late to a wedding after my appointment. When I booked the appointment, I told Shun I had a wedding 2 hours after our appointment. She said our appointment would only take an hour. Our appointment took almost 2 hours. Worst of all, the Corps d'Elite prices are absolutely, undeniably absurd. She charged me $95 to trim my ends. (I did not get a fancy hair cut; I got a simple blunt trim without layers.) In addition, she charged me $75 for a wash, dry, and flat iron. When I booked my appointment, I was told I would be charged $55 for the style and just a little more for the trim. Since the prices were so high, I called to ask if I was erroneously overcharged. Shun said I was charged the right amount and she didn't even apologize for the confusion. Instead, she insisted that I actually was getting a good deal, because she is a "professionally trained stylist who could charge hundreds more." She then offered to send me her resume, so that I can verify her qualifications. What kind of unprofessional response is that? Where are her customer service skills? I really want to support Shun, because she is local small business owner. However, I simply cannot support anyone who nonchalantly overcharges me for a basic service. Before leaving the salon, I was given aftercare instructions, which I followed exactly. After washing my hair for the first time using the shampoo I was instructed to use, the color turned orange instead of the caramel tone we had discussed with no sign of keratin. I contacted Kate about the problem, and she agreed that I should come back for a corrective appointment. Unfortunately, the corrective appointment made my hair significantly worse rather than fixing it. Afterward, my hair had multiple uneven shades, patchy highlights, excessive breakage, and became extremely dry, brittle, and overprocessed. My scalp also became irritated after the chemical services. The attached photos show the condition of my hair after these appointments. My hair was also left feeling fried and damaged instead of smooth and healthy. After the unsuccessful correction, I continued trying to resolve the issue directly with the salon. Kate ultimately issued only a partial refund after multiple discussions, leaving me responsible for hundreds of dollars despite the failed services and the condition of my hair. A corrective appointment and a partial refund would not have occurred if there had been no issue to address. The owner has publicly disputed my experience. I stand by this review. I have photographs documenting the results after my appointments, along with records of the corrective appointment, our communications, and the partial refund. I trusted this salon with my hair, and I am now dealing with damage that will take months to grow out and repair. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Tilila Hair Design.
