I went to several printing shops all over North Park, Hillcrest, and Downtown looking for a good price on some color posters I needed printed. The estimates at Fed Ex in Hillcrest was an insane $400 for this small job (50 copies of 11X 17 posters ). Finally I went to yelp.com and found MGX. What a great find. I emailed them a jpg of the poster. They estimated around $20 for the 50 posters in color. I was doubtful of this price since all the other estimates were about $300 plus. "How could they be so cheap?" I thought. I went to the shop off Miramar Road yesterday and received a warm and friendly welcome. They handed me the completed job. It was perfect. I am overjoyed. I tried MGX based on their glowing reviews but after my experience, I wonder if these are all legitimate reviews, especially given they are from all over the US. My project was somewhat unique in design (nothing too crazy though) so I was seeking a printer that could print full bleed on 18x24, which they could. Due to the unique design of the project, I chose to pay for a single copy "proof" for $20 (my previous printer didn't charge for proofs) but I thought it was a good investment to make sure the total cost of the project wasn't wasted to make it was executed correctly. It was a good thing I did. They had a very difficult time understanding that I had created a custom die cut piece that I wanted them to print on gloss card stock and I would hand cut and apply myself. TRIP #1 - pick up proof #1. Although the file was set up with 1/4" bleed, it was trimmed much more than that making the text right up to the edge. They apologized for the bad printing of the first proof. They said the printer was not calibrated properly and caused streaks and irregularity in the printing, etc. To make sure it had a good buffer or room around the edge, I revised the file with a 1/2 bleed. I uploaded a new file to the website and called the project coordinator to confirm it had been uploaded. My first designer left on PTO so I was bounced between two more designers, repeating the project details repeatedly to explain this over and over. TRIP #2 - Pick up revised proof only to discover they did not print from the updated file and incorrectly printed from the first file, again trimming too much. It looked the same as the first proof. TRIP #3 - they printed the proof from the correct file so I authorized to proceed with the total order. In the email to the coordinator to approve it, I reminded her that the project was a 2-part (2-file) project: the booklet and the die cut piece..."do not forget to print the second file". TRIP #4 - husband picked up the order and THEY FORGOT TO PRINT THE SECOND FILE! I called to explain what happen. They said they would save me the trip and mail it out. It arrived the next day in a huge box. Sadly, the print job was several shades different since it was not printed simultaneously with the first piece and did not even come close to matching (see photo). Obviously, I was very upset by this time. They are only open Mon-Fri during my work hours and 20 minutes away and caused me a LOT of down time from work and inconvenience to drive there over and over. I demanded to have a call back from the manager, Junior. They were apologetic and said they would have him call me when he got in at 11AM. I said my review would reflect if I got a call back or not. I did not get a call from the Manager. I got a call from yet another employee that did not have the facts straight and had to explain the situation and my objective yet again! TRIP #5 - brought the incorrectly printed piece back to their shop to show them the variance in color between the two pieces that were to be put together as one final project. They reprinted it for me while I waited and promised me $30 credit for the trouble which I have yet to receive from 2 weeks ago. FINALLY, it is correct and complete... Although the multiple employees I dealt with were very apologetic throughout this, I have yet to hear from the manager. I guess it is not worth his time... This was a personal project. Shortly after, I had to have several 300-page books printed for an important business client. It was not even a consideration to try this important project with MGX. I went back to Replica in Scripps Ranch where they are detail-oriented and truly customer service oriented and open on Saturdays. read more

To put it in perspective, I have a client that consistently requests huge projects, and they rarely give me more than a week of lead time. One week in particular, they contacted me on a Thursday needing (by Saturday night) a 16 page booklet, fully designed, printed and delivered. I pulled an all-nighter designing, then sent the booklet file to Lawrence on Friday morning. He printed 500 copies of a 16 page magazine & delivered to my client by Saturday. This company is really nice. They have the best prices, quick turn around, and THE BEST customer service. When I placed my order, I was emailed and told that my page numbers were being slightly cut off and they would wait for me to send them an updated doc with their specs. Do you appreciate it when your hard copy proof looks disconcertingly different from the electronic proof you approved? Are you OK with having your "one day" turnaround time turn into five days? Are you excited by high turnover in a company, so that you are constantly being passed off to new staff? Is communicating with east coast staff in east coast time zones what you expect when you hire a "local" San Diego company? Do you like hearing "No, I'm sorry we cannot do that" and "This is our standard procedure"? How about lots of exuberant exclamation points in your emails, as if you were corresponding with a preteen who just discovered texting? Perhaps best, do you enjoy being told "Have a great day" every time you are denied or delayed or passed off or quoted an unaccommodating policy? If you answered yes to these questions, then Printivity is your company! As a small business owner, I worked with this company as "MGX Copy" in San Diego for a number of years. MGX Copy was not excellent, but they were reliably competent. Recently MGX was rebranded as "Printivity". You might think that adding "ivity" to the end of a word implies a positive, can-do, a Mary Poppins-like efficiency. You shouldn't. Unfortunately, with the Printivity rebranding came a precipitous decline in both capability and customer service. Perhaps my favorite Printivity stupidity is the fact that the company has ambitiously redefined the meaning of the word "day". I was told that when I'm quoted "24 hours" that is not a day. Rather, it is at least three calendar days, because the 24 hours refers to actual work hours, not revolutions of the earth or a "day" as you or I might reasonably understand. Add in a weekend and that means a "24 hour turnaround time" can be five calendar days. Absitivity serious, folks. Really. To be fair, Printivity is convivial about their incompetence. Sure, you can seldom communicate with the same staff member twice before they are "no longer with the company". But even while they are delaying and bungling your order, each and every Printivity employee will enthusiastically end their email with "Have a great day". And when you get an actual live person on the phone, they will answer nearly everything you tell them with "I appreciate you." In fact, they'll say "I appreciate you" over and over again. Yeah. It's not just disingenuous, but downright creepy. If all of this sounds just too strange, confusing, and exciting, then I do very much recommend another printer.
