PriceSmart Foods is a grocery store that is a mixed-concept grocery store, as it is an Asian grocery store that also offers traditional grocery items. It is comparable to T&T, but has a more Westernized vibe as it looks more like a Save On Foods or Safeway store. The Richmond store is located conveniently just off No. 3 Road. Parking is a bit tough on the weekends. The lot is also shared with some other businesses in the same plaza. Sale prices can be good, though you will need the store card to get the discount. I did not find the pricing on the traditional grocery items to be great. I would recommend shopping at Real Canadian Superstore instead for a better selection and value. Still, it is a good place to shop if you just want to go to one store for everything you need, even if you have to pay more for some things. read more

Came in after dinner and it was not a great experience. There were buckets around many areas looking like they were catching leaks. And all the service areas were close. Looked at the meat sections the meat looked anything but fresh perhaps because it was the end of the day. On the pro side there were lots of varieties of Asian snacks, drinks and anything you needed to restock a pantry. If you want to shop somewhere not crowded also a good place at night. This is my go to grocery/supermarket primarily because it carries both Asian and Western foods. Although selections may not be complete, they are quite extensive for my cooking needs. I come for Asian cuts of meat, fresh seafood section and oriental ingredients. It is a convenient one stop shop where I can get my stuff and get on my day. My gauge of a clean supermarket is one where meat and fish sections do not smell of heavy bleach masking days-old carcasses. And PriceSmart is not one of them. When I weighed the broccoli at the self check-out machine, the screen of the weight and the price showed up so I put the broccoli into the bagging area. Then the screen returned to the 'list of items purchased' page without the broccoli that I just scanned. I waited for a few seconds but the price of the broccoli still did not show up under 'purchased item'. So I needed to pick up the broccoli from the bagging area that I just scanned and weighed it again. I have asked for a chocolate mousse cake from Pricesmart bakery twice now, and BOTH TIMES I got a crappy chocolate sponge cake. These were ordered a year apart. Both times it said "chocolate mousse cake" on the label. The first time I thought it was a mistake but it now looks like it is either mislabelled or the person actually don't know what mousse cake is. In today's cake, random sections of filling was HALF-FROZEN, where I could taste the crunchy icicles formed, which tells me that it was not freshly made, and worse, it was not defrosted completely. Absolutely absurd. Also, I go for asian bakeries as the cakes are generally less sweet, but this one continues to be super sweet. I would NOT shop at Pricesmart bakery. read more

Just came here for some lunch with a friend of mine because we were passing through. We ate some cooked salmon roll / California roll combo that was on special. It tasted okay, but the problem was that the salmon roll thing was either poorly prepared or tasted like they just used a bunch of left over ingredients and sold it as a special item. The reason why it felt that way was primarily because the sushi essentially fell apart so easily when I tried picking it up. So even though the presentation looked nice but sadly the actual food was kinda meh. Anyways, after looking around the rest of the store and to be honest, if you been to any other PriceSmart store or any other grocery stores, you've essentially been to all of them. While they do have some decent selections, as well as some Asian food choices in the cooked food section, there's nothing really all that special that would make this particular store stand out. read more

I have to say this Price Smart Foods has good friendly customer service but its the customers who shop here throws the experience off. I have noticed a few rude moments of other customers. So first off I was trying to park and had my signal lights and everything about to park into the parking spot and fancy Lexus car stepped on his gas and stole my spot. So rude. OK. well I came here at night and i noticed a spot available few spots over so I parked there. It doesn't make any difference. So went inside. A rude customer started coughing rigorously without covering his mouth. So rude. He coughed at all the fruits and all food items. My mom was shocked. My mom made a comment under her breath about that he should cover his mouth and stop spreading germs and this guy gave my mom an evil stare and spatted on the ground. My mom shook her head at the guy. Another incident happened was we were going to the till to place and I have started putting my stuff in my little basket onto the the end of the belt and a couple with just a few items budged in line and started putting things on the middle of the belt. WOW. I am shocked. Not to be mean but this people are a disgrace. If its one selfish customer than ok. But I have experience 3 selfish rude customers all at the one PriceSmart. I don't usually come to this PriceSmart and I am starting to think those rude people should be more considerate while shopping. So back to the shopping experience. We wanted to go to SaveOnFoods and we knew PriceSmart Food is own by Jim Patterson and was thinking why not just go here. They probably have the same sale. We walked in and it was entirely like a Jim Patterson version of T&T. Yup lots of Asian food. Well, we are not here to shop for Asian food. There are a few particular items we are looking for that is on the SaveOnFood flyer. Luckily, the same items are on sale. I forgot to bring my SaveOn membership card. Best part was that they were willing to take my phone number. Overall, it was ok. I am just shocked that I had 3 incidents of meeting 3 different horrible selfish customers at this place. read more

Formerly known as Save-On Foods, this supermarket is currently in the middle of a huge renovation. Parking is very ample. The lot here is HUGE. I couldn't tell if the supermarket is trying to move more upscale or downscale. The name "Price Smart" suggests cheapness, yet the store is spotlessly clean. Everything is freshly painted, and there's a certain upscale feel to the place. A couple of things worth mentioning: 1) There is an entire new section dedicated to Asian ingredients. Looks like Jimmy is trying to compete head-to-head with the likes of T&T. The area was still fenced off though, so you'll have to see for yourself in a few days or weeks. 2) The refrigerated shelves are really nice and shiny. They're lit by shiny white LEDs now. Almost makes you think you're looking at jewelry, before you remember you're still in a supermarket. Give it a couple of weeks, and I'm sure this place will look totally awesome. read more

This review is only for the cake we ordered. Positive: it looked nice. Negatives: Mango mousse cake was not good. The outer layer (a glazed fondant) was so sticky, it looked like glue (difficulty removing the fruits from the cake). The mousse was very cold (bordering on previously frozen) & didn't have much flavour. The cake itself was dry. Very disappointing. First & last cake ordered here. read more

I bought a red bean spounge cake for $2.75, and there is one piece of red bean at the bottom of the cake pretending there is a lot of red bean. It's like Save-on Foods and T&T Supermarket had a baby! Congratulations - it's a boy... errr girl.. errr PriceSmart Foods! This is a hybrid store where you can find all your Save-On needs along with a majority of asian inspired foods - in a clean and organized environment. And lots of parking too - unlike the parking lots for T&T Supermarket, Yaohan, etc... Firstly, I enjoy the Seafood/Meat area. It's so well-kept and everything looks very fresh and alive. They have a great selection of everything from individual seaweed packs to asian chips to kirin milk tea to mochi to sushi to tv dinners and much more. I especially like the small eating area where you can enjoy your BBQ pork on rice you bought fresh at their deli. Essentially you can find a lot of things at competitive prices. Generally i think T&T is still a little cheaper but to shop in a place that's clean, has ample space and parking, a CLEAN washroom at the front of the store, and self-checkout... I might just come here a little more often! In the end, good one stop shop for your western and asian food needs. ps: Bring your Save-on More Rewards card! read more

When did you decide to go all Chinese on me, and go head to head with the T&T group? I know that this location, being Save-On-Foods before always had the one difference from all the Save-On's of the name, which is having roast Chinese pork and BBQ pork at the back near the meats are. Not having come here in a long time, I was sent on a mission to buy some 'Gaviscon' for someone's massive heartburn and finally stepped back into this place. I knew for awhile this changed to a Price Smart, gone are the former colors of Save-On, and welcome the blues, greens, and whites of Price Smart. I was not expecting such a drastic change inside. I thought they would do a cheap re-branding and keep everything practically the same, I was pleasantly surprised. Jim Pattison, you understand branding and marketing, and how to change something as tiring as this store to something that fit this community. If you have been in a cave for the last 20 odd years you would have not realized Richmond is very dense in regards to a Chinese community, and to have multilingual signs in the isles, not just in English, but in Chinese is a plus, but to also carry Chinese meats, vegetables, and products, I have to give them props for doing this, and not allowing T&T (who was bought by the Loblaws group) run away with a monopoly of their Chinese branded supermarket chains. Even if your not looking for Chinese products, this place is more pleasant to shop than the 'zoo' of a supermarket called 'Superstore'. The isles are wide, the lighting is bright, and the parking lot... yeah.... well just like any parking lot in Richmond.. that is a whole other adventure I won't get into.. you'll see when you get here! A good pharmacy and a place that you can still collect those 'More' points.. I'm glad I have another option in big-box department stores in Richmond. read more

This Save On Foods has saved my ass numerous amounts of times for dinner, pot lucks, bbqs, parties or any other sort of affair involving the need to bring some sort of food. They're just there, right in the middle of the city without the nuisance of that crazy parking lot at Superstore. It's just a wide open lot, park far enough away and you can run in and run out and have perfect access to that back road...you know Cooney the quick getaway. Their staff always seem on point with directing me to the proper aisles for me to be able to quickly grab everything I need (and should have been more prepared about) and make it to that express check out where they so expertly manage to shuffle people through fast, even when scanning partially rubbed out bar codes on people's Save On points cards. I had always liked Save-On Foods better than Superstore or Safeway, and now this location has a huge section for Asian ingredients! This has been declared our Usual Spot. The whole left half is Asian, including non-Canadian cuts of meat and "hot pot ingredients deli" next to the fish section. Prepared food deli, like cold duck, too... Even chirimen-jyako (tiny white fish for topping rice or salad)! The Asian bakery items are available, provided by Saint Germain (according to the clear wrapping on the cakes). I don't like them, though. All the pastries have a sweetness to them, including the chicken pie. The best part, though, is that I don't have to go to a different store to get Canadian deli stuff and regular items. It has wider aisles than T&T, but they decided to have rolley baskets available. Isn't that awesome!? And, yes, they have added self-check-out machines. They were overly sensitive at first (and the staff didn't know how to handle the machines, only approve whatever the error was), but they have been re-calibrated reasonably. read more

One negative, and too many to count good things about this store from a local. Negative-- Please remove the plastic wrapping from the heated deli items--transfer from heated plastic's toxic chemicals to food is well-known. This health danger has stopped me buying these deli items. A few positive: 1) Comparison of sanitary standards to T & T, clean and well-maintained conditions overall 2) High BC standards are often evident in Western Family brand, please don't lower your standards by adding poor but cheaper ingredients to meet low price comparisons, but counter with quality arguments. BC customers appreciate your looking after us, Mr. Pattison, in more ways than your donations to local hospitals. 3) Looking after local BC agriculture businesses by purchasing and advertising them 4) Appreciate the greeting from cashiers, and the evident good training in the overall helpful attitudes from staff. Price Smart sells bad chicken. Price Smart will rip you off with bad chicken. I bought a chicken drum sticks yesterday and kept it in refrigerator over night. I open it today and chicken is bad. By the way, this is the second time with their chicken. I realize Price Smart will take all the chicken HAS GONE BAD and pack it on the nice package with one or two dollar lower price than other chicken drum sticks. Whoa! What a renovation! The once Save-on-Foods transformed into the now Price Smart Foods, has really upped its game to fit the community. I can't speak to the other Price Smarts in the city, but this one has definitely been T&T'ed - as in literally half of the supermarket is dedicated to Asian groceries. Which I think is amazing since I can't count the number of times I looking to buy super cheap gai-lan and apple pears AS WELL AS regular chicken broth and thyme. Prices also seem to have dropped significantly, even in the Western foods section. Another awesome feature is the extensive bulk section (similar to Save on Foods' previous one) and a new giant frozen foods section - again, complete with Asian options (frozen dim sum) as well as Delissio pizzas. I'm really pleased with this change. The place is impeccably clean as Edward L points out, and everything is quite easy to find. I will definitely be back to buy fancy Asian rice crackers and bulk sour keys. read more

Absolute chaos! This place reminded me of the Boxing Day at Wal*Mart however It was a random Sunday! I almost got hit by 3 cars from the parking lot to the front doors... Than I made it inside! Legit anarchy ... Vegetables on the ground 10's of people all ripping at the same items. Items being knocked over and not cleaned up. The SMELL ... Oh boy it smelt so horrible in there. This store has the WORST cashier I have had the misfortune of shopping in. Twice now I have had her. Very tall African American woman. Very rude. My first encounter with her was some weeks ago when she rang my groceries through. No greeting, no eye contact. She seemed more interested in chatting with other staff. No cashiers open today except her on the less than 15 item line. I had more than 15. I asked if any of the other cashiers were opening as one of them appeared to be open but with the light off. She was totally rude and said there's no light on. Okay where is the sign that says go to the next cashier? I ended up going to the do it yourself machines. It took me twice as long to get through the machine as it would have with a cashier. Never shopping there again. read more

It took a few months for the word to spread, but now this Price Smart is jam packed with shoppers during most of the day. Half the store is dedicated to asian groceries, while the other half is the original western oriented fare. I come here mainly because the checkout line ups are still way shorter than anywhere else in Richmond, in particular the mega lines at Superstore. Usually, I head for the self-checkout kiosks where there is no line. Prices are reasonable. When items are on sale, the prices are about as cheap as Superstore. Otherwise, they are competitive with IGA or Safeway. I tried the tuna sashimi in the deli the other day at $5.35 for a small tray. It was decent. It is hard to find good tuna sashimi these days. read more

You can get your asian goodies on here, right down to the pork buns if your hungry after shopping. Big, clean, nice, with in reasonable distance from a Canada Line stop. The asian version of Price Smart Foods. I wouldn't be surprised if this could be mistaken for T&T. They have a huge prepared food section! It's basically a carbon copy of T&T's selection. They have a huge selection of asian grocery items, prepared, packaged, and frozen. They also have a decent selection of western items, which includes a bakery, dessert section. They also have a few aisles of organic items. However, Price Smart Foods isn't my first choice for my Chinese grocery shopping needs. You can get all of the same items at China World for much cheaper. read more

I love the different bakery products, their pineapple bun with salted egg yolk and the pineapple croissants are my favourite. Fairly priced and the return policy is good. I keep reminding myself and not that I'm being unfaithful, well, yeah, I am, but there are just some things that you don't have that I want. It's all about what I want isn't it? I have to say that for where you are located, you indeed serve your customers well and you have great variety. Everything inside is wonderfull. I honestly do not have any complaints. But you can't be everything to me. Which is why the mall you are located within is so wonderful. You're completed with the Canadian tire and the London Drugs and the restaurants that surround you. You don't cut hair, do banking or serve sushi. So it's not that I'm being unfaithful.......I like what you have but the variety that surrounds you makes me want to try it all. I want more. Just be comforted in the fact that I keep coming back and that you always welcome me with perfectly good service, smiles and fresh produce. I like your organics selection, I like the clean layout and organization and the points card. I like the self serve checkout service. When it comes down to it. You complete me. They have split the store to two sections, the cooked food and Asian grocery and the Western groceries. If you are looking for oil for example, they have the Peanut Oil from Hong Kong and you walk across to the other side, they have peanut oil from Canada. So if you are asking for help, be specific, most times they point me to the Chinese goods side and I am looking for the Western side. They have a huge quick meals options and lots of Asian groceries. In the fresh fruit and veggies aisles, they have pre-cut veggie and fruit trays which are very reasonably priced. They do have lots of staff around to ask for help which is a plus. read more

But it's clean, bright lights, lots of selection, good half-dozen self checkout, & clean washrooms. Parking can be crazy here, so i prefer parking closer towards the White spot or liquor store, at least when you leave, you don't get bottlenecked w/ all the shoppers coming to the main area. they will charge for plastic bags. tonite, got some good deals on chocolate Cadbury clusters, as pics show--these are great movie snacks! read more

14/30 Day Challenge. The new T&T alternative. For those who haven't visited this location, it has recently had an Asian makeover. And what I mean is that half of the store is now direct Asian import, very similar to T&T. In the center aisle is the produce. On the right is your usual Price Smart. On the left is your T&T. Price Smart, being a rebranded Save-on-Foods, has your usual higher prices compared to Superstore. However, you will find that there produce is much fresher and higher quality than superstore. The price of the Asian food is comparable T&T, as they are also quite pricey. Great convenient location. Staff is always friendly. Hours aren't the best. But all in all, a great alternative. read more
