My wife and I haven't been to Napa in five years, so this weekend we were excited to return. We've shared some memorable meals at The French Laundry and hoped to return this weekend. Unfortunately, we are on the wait list for a cancellation. A chef in Kansas City whose restaurant we frequent regularly, had worked at The French Laundry, and he suggested we go to Press, if we couldn't get into TFL. When we arrived for our 6pm reservation, the dining room, accented in neutral colors, was alive with natural light. Above the fireplace is a huge decorative ceramic clock from an old train station. The staff-to-diner ratio is high, so you'll never be waiting for a water refill, a second cocktail or any other need. And the food presentation/creativity is off the charts. Our 1 hour and 45-minute dining experience never lagged and was one amazing tasting after another. For some, the cost may be too high. The seven-course Summer Tasting menu for two, plus some cocktails and a glass of wine, resulted in a check for $562, before tip. Keep in mind that Press has the largest selection of Napa wines in the world, so if you're a wine aficionado, which we aren't, your check can be significantly higher. If you're into Instagram quality food, the kombu-roasted tomato, ricotta gnudi, alaskan halibut and the panna cotta were works of art. Unreal taste and texture. We had a slight hiccup when it came to our protein course. My wife has ordered the American wagyu and I the pekin duck (not peking duck). What was served was two pekin ducks. Instead of taking away the extra duck, they left it for me and my wife's wagyu quickly appeared with an apology from the manager. Marica was our server and a delight to work with. Interesting dining experience. Right off the highway there's a big parking lot with ample parking. They do have two complimentary Juice Box EV Chargers (wish they had more). The restaurant is huge with a fairly large indoor dining area, with an equally impressive outdoor dining. We were given a $225 tasting menu and paired it with a few supplemental upgrades. The waitress recommended a few cocktails that hit the spot. All the dishes hit the right note and besides the Wagyu which was tough to eat, there wasn't anything we dislike. The dishes were a master of edible art leaving us wanting more. The portion size seem smaller than other places, but the menu does fill you up without going over. Granted it was not perfect but when you consider the price vs quality, this place deserve five stars. read more

By far, one of the most amazing culinary experiences I have had with my wife and in my life, PRESS is this incredible restaurant that has a Michelin star; per my knowledge, the first time I have gone to a restaurant that has earned one. This is one of the only restaurants that we have dined whose menu is completely gluten-free, which my wife loved. Additionally, they have an amazing wine list, which we selected and enjoyed this incredible bottle of wine, whose name leaves me, but it was magical. Given that we were celebrating our Irish Wedding Anniversary and our respective birthdays, the staff gave us this really sweet greeting card that was signed by all of them. Very cool. Each of the staff with whom we interacted was kind and warm and made us feel at home. We had come from touring wineries in nearby Calistoga and had coordinated dining at PRESS before we returned to our hotel for the day. The décor comprised high ceilings, industrial-styled windows that ran all around the bar and dining areas, and booth long-booth table seating and cushy yet fashionable gray-colored chairs at other tables. The courses we were served were synergy at synchronicity. Between the cuisine, the cocktails, the service, and the company, of course, with my darling wife, this experience was magical on a unicorn/Pegasus level. The Ricotta gnudi; very magical that was a flavor explosion with an incredibly artistic display. In fact, all of the dishes they served us were beautifully crafted and tasted otherworldly. The truffle glazed chicken with summer truffle, garden beets, smoked bacon, and sauce vin jaune was so savory and delicious. The 35-day New York strip had such a wonderful character that complimented well with the morel Mushrooms. For our after-dinner experience, we feasted on Jivaro chocolate crème, which was served with orange cocoa crumble, olive oil sorbet, chocolate sponge, and Custelmagro custard. Both those dishes were incredible, and the espresso martini we enjoyed concluded a culinary synergy we enjoyed throughout our experience at PRESS. We went to Press over the weekend and the place lived up to the expectations. We had the five course tasting menu and each dish was exceptional. The presentation could not be better and the service was flawless. The noise level was appropriate, could be a bit better but still - it was very good. It is very pricey but one either has deep pockets or celebrates something (as we did) so this should not be an issue. Overall all four of us thoroughly enjoyed the experience. read more

I've been here 3 times and had the tasting and lounge menu. Everything was cooked correctly, everything was hyperseasonal and everything tasted like something I've had elsewhere and done better at other places. I think this place in geared to the folks visiting Napa from SF or further afar and wanting a safe farm to table experience with excellent wine and that's what you will get. Is it a place for adventurous food eaters or people that expect something exceptional at this price point and acclaim? No. Also for one meal I was with someone "famous" and the portions and the service was much better and we got given some complimentary dishes. What an amazing and fun evening. The service here - amazing. The staff was constantly making sure we were doing good, and I enjoyed the combination of flavors and presentations. It felt classy and modern, even though we had a bar table. It was also really easy to get a reservation, which I appreciated. My friend though, I think she would rate this place either a 3 or 4. If I could rate this a 4.5 I probably would, but I prefer to round up. We did the tasting menu and got the really tasty non-alcoholic drinks. I also got the one with clarified butter and it was delicious?? You can't really go wrong. If I wasn't driving I would have done the pairing but alas. Every dish that came out had really interesting asian flavors combined with western ingredients which was really interesting. And everything was beautiful. I ended the meal very comfortably full, but that was one of my friend's complaints - she still felt like she could eat after. I mean, could I also have a taco? Yes. But I really like where I ended up- I don't wanna leave feeling stuffed. The gnudi was amazing, and the clarified tomato! That was my favorite dish - I just wish there were more. My friend said her cod was overcooked and that it was too chewy buuut I had a piece and I honestly couldn't tell, but I'm also less familiar with cod generally. I thought it was pretty flakey. She was generally less satisfied with the food though, and generally less impressed given the price point. Where press really shone though, was in their customer service. My friend's cod dish had plastic in it - we were completely shocked they had forgotten it in the dish and let it come out. We let the waiter know and that's when the customer service really started to shine. They gave her a custom strawberry drink, comped two of her three drinks, and on top of that, comped her whole meal. To the wait staff who took care of us - thank you so much. The service is professional, warm and friendly. Ambience is refined yet slightly rustic and quite appropriate for the wine growing region. If you are lucky enough to have Stephen as your server, you are sure to have a special dining experience although everyone is great. The food was delightful. My favorite was the white truffle tagliatelle. They shave the truffle right if front of you. The black cod was also perfect. Lots of subtle flavor in all the dishes. We were so excited to try Press for a birthday dinner but have to be honest, we were so underwhelmed. We did the 7 course tasting menu and nothing stood out to us. We did the Summer Tasting Menu at Press, and while it was a good experience, it wasn't exceedingly spectacular and not worth the price for me. I would have preferred using this $$ towards a 3 Michelin Star experience. Great service, good food, but to me it was not $200 per person good. We did not love the veg shaved ice amuse bouche (idk what it was), nor the fish. I feel like the flow of the menu was a bit disjointed. Is my palate too bougie, are my standard too high? And is my taste too particular these days? Maybe. Maybe I would have felt differently if I got the regular tasting menu. I will say presentation was a 10/10. I wish Press was still the steakhouse it once was bc it was really good back in the day! Autumn tasting menu. All dishes were well executed, but lacking the "addictive" factor that one wants when going out to an establishment of this price point. Fruits de mer: Cutely ensconced in its shell, this abalone amuse-bouche was tender, briny, and sweet, flanked by a succulent morsel of lobster and a bubbly bouquet of caviar. A teasingly small portion - just a tickle from the salt sea. Kombu roasted tomato with plum: a delicious tomato and plum. No more, no less. Your standard farmer's market fare here in northern california. The parts are well-paired all the same. Will I ever find my perfect match? Ricotta gnudi- wrapped in squash blossoms, the venature and translucent skin made these look like they could be the organs of a small mammal - or my ex-husband! The taste was pleasant, but not particularly exciting. Guess who that reminds me of...! Poached halibut with hollandaise: Soft and smooth, like Brad flirting with that girl in his DMs. Also not at all fishy, unlike Brad's DMs. Pekin duck with pistachio butter (and roasted duck heart): This was the winner of the evening. The meat was savory and piquant without gaminess. The jus drizzled around it was an "umami-bomb" but somehow too sweet and too bitter. A bit heavy on the garlic for my tastes. I loved the pistachio butter, which added a loftier dimension to the earthy duck meat. This dish also came with the duck heart roasted on a skewer. Tearing it apart with my fangs brought me back to the day I signed my divorce papers. I came here for dinner with a friend and we both got the 5-course menu, with slight variations between us, though neither of us added supplemental items. I like that they have a few options for tastings, so there's some choice but not overwhelming. Also neither of us were very hungry, so the 5 course was still a great amount. Service was lovely, and though we had an outdoor reservation - they were able to seat us inside cause of the heat. I enjoyed the decor, with the big green clock. I also got a wine pairing, which helped to accentuate both the bites and the wines. I read in a review that the restaurant was a steakhouse, and I thought they did a great job with the trout as well. Each course felt like familiar renditions that other fine dining restos have done in the past except PRESS' version was unimpressive in taste and texture. While most courses presented well, some of the execution lacked finesse and didn't feel like it came from a Michelin star restaurant. For example, the Lobster Raviolo was thick and gummy with two slices of lemon glued to it, topped with a roasted broccoli floret and lobster, the size of a crawfish. A perplexing and clunky combo (not a fan of eating lemon pith+rind). And, the Ricotta Gnudi was like a dense gnocchi...not fluffy ricotta clouds that it should be. Topped with a meager amount of shaved white truffle, it was not worth the $50 supplement. Lastly, why drown Charcoal-Grilled Black Cod with consommé, only to make the crisp skin turn soggy? There was no amuse bouche (tho, I think the first course was probably meant to be?), no intermezzo, and no mignardises. Halfway through, the flavors became monotonous. This may be nitpicky AF but $245 for the tasting menu w/ gnudi supplement (pre tip & tax) is A LOT of money to spend. But, with some of the polarizing reviews for PRESS, it's possible we visited on one of their off nights. Unless you're balling, not sure if it's worth taking the gamble on the tasting menu. I had the best time at PRESS. One of my best friend emphasized how amazing this restaurant is and we agreed that we needed to try it out. He had visited both PRESS and French Laundry during a work-related social brunch and expressed how everything - service, quality of food, presentation of food, and taste was exceptional. We ended up booking 2 months in advance for a table for 4 at 8:15pm on a Saturday night. Come Saturday, he picked up our group of four and we started our trip, thinking about delicious foods and an amazing experience ahead. We arrived at 7:45pm since we didn't want to be late. We were asked to visit the bar for some libations. We each ordered a beverage - Damage Control (Mandarin Vodka, St. Germain, Yuzu, and Ginger Beer) for myself and Piranha, Push Pop, and Bartender's Recommendation for my friends. The recommendation not enjoyable and the new bartender (maybe he was covering for this bartender during break?) came up and made another beverage that was similar to a Push Pop but with alcohol. We had also ordered a warm pretzel, and as others have mentioned, warm, soft, and baked to perfection. 8:15pm came and passed and we flagged the hostess at 8:30. At that point, we asked if we could get Course 1 of 4, of the prix fixe item delivered to the bar. She agreed and within 10 minutes, the first round (I ordered the Chips & Dip) arrived. It was delightful, although my vegetarian friend didn't seem too thrilled at her Green Tomato - the combination of an empty stomach, nausea, alcohol, and vinegar-y cucumber slices don't bode well for anyone. At around 9:00pm, we were seated at our table, with the items we enjoyed on the house. A manager helped seat us at the table and made sure that we also enjoyed another refreshment, also on the house. Despite everybody being ravenous, it was a nice gesture for the staff at Press. I ordered my Four Courses (Fluke Crudo, Dry-Aged Beef Tartare, Black Code, and Cafe Au Lait). At that moment, the night took a turn and everything was quite enjoyable. The servers made sure that we were well waited on - water refilled, enjoying our food and refreshments, and kept pace with the subsequent courses. Out of the two 1st courses, I would recommend the Fluke Crudo. My favorite of all the courses would have been the Dry-Aged Beef Tartare. The food were all plated wonderfully, service fantastic, and the best company to enjoy this with. Press was also very generous by offering us a huge discount, in addition to the complementary items they covered. I felt that my dish had more radish than hamachi. I would have preferred a slightly more physically balanced dish. Paired with a 2021 Gruner Veltliner from Fifth Moon. Ricotta Gnudi - My favorite dish of the meal. So different. Hard to describe. Interesting flavors from the shell of the ricotta (squash blossoms) to the parmigiano reggiano consommé. Paired with a 2020 table white from DeSante. Black Cod - The best part was that not only was the skin edible, but suggested. My family felt this was a hit. Paired with a 2012 Pinot Noir from Spring Mountain Vineyard. Palette Cleanser - Wow, so good!!! The second palette cleanser was amazing, an orange custard. So flavorful. I wanted more. :) This could have been a dessert for me. Truffle Glazed Chicken - Another entree that exceeded our expectations. The truffle glaze was different and really good. Not because it was truffle, but because it was done well. Twenty One Day Ribeye - Cooked to perfection. I especially like the fact that each piece was individually cut and seasoned and seared. Even the beef tongue was good. Paper thin. Not what I expected, nor what I grew up with. Paired with a Cab from Monticello Vineyards. Desserts - WOW, I mean wow. I enjoy sipping (pairing) as I taste the dish and a few times I almost finished my wine before the dish came out. Atmosphere - Decent size, modern location. I actually really like the bar area. Shared with my wife that we actually have been here before, but she (nor I) can remember the specifics. Both indoor and outdoor seating. Our servers, Frank and Matthew were excellent, and the food was great. However, the patio was beyond underwhelming as it felt like we were banished to "kids room." The patio feels like a complete afterthought and was exceedingly basic... a complete disappointment compared to the main dining room ambience. And the smell of garbage from the dumpster out of sight was really challenging. I rarely ever leave negative reviews... But for a Michelin star restaurant to have such a subpar dining offering is just unacceptable. For those of you looking for a fantastic food and service experience... Press offers that. However, I would never recommend anybody accepts a reservation in their patio area. This restaurant should go to Brix and check out their patio dining, which is a 10 out of 10. For my birthday dinner we opted for the 8 course tasting menu. My favorite part of it was the fruits de mar, but I also loved the lobster raviolo and the grilled cod. The american wagyu was also nice. For 8 courses, the portions didn't leave me feeling stuffed but I was also not still hungry afterwards. The staff here was very nice. When they were complimenting my outfit, I was telling one of them about a stain that I had gotten on my white pants from that same morning and they kindly provided me with stain removing wipes. read more

The lobster roll was so bland all we could taste was the bread it was served in. We didn't finish our halibut main because it so mushy. And the chicken was just.....chicken. Overall, the prices for the a la carte menu weren't terrible for Napa, but we definitely expected more based on all the 'press' this places gets. Press is More Opening in 2005, Press started out as a steakhouse before changing course and transforming into a fine dining restaurant. Their ethos is simple: celebrate all things Napa from the wine to embracing the farm-to-table seasonal dining. This change has brought about astounding success with multiple awards and finally earning them a coveted Michelin Star™. It's funny to think that with the hundred--if not thousands?!--of restaurants we've both dined at over the years that this would be our first Michelin starred experience. Truth be told, I've had many opportunities, but the price of these establishments is almost always an immediate turn-off, but for once, we threw caution to the wind and just said, "f it." The Good: *Largest collection of Napa Valley wines (10k+) in the world curated by Master Sommelier Vincent Morrow. The list is so absurdly huge and changing that they have to hand you an iPad to view most of it. *$40 corkage fee (limit of 2 bottles), which seems absurd, until you see the prices on some of their "pours," but more on that in a minute. *Diners have the option of doing the tasting menu or picking-and-choosing to their tastes on a different menu (there is some overlap but not 100%). *Ambiance and décor were one of a kind and fantastic. *Maybe the best service we've ever or ever hoped to experience. Our server, Stephen, was pleasant, witty, and kept it real. I dare say he was almost worth the price of admission alone. *Wine pairing to go along with the tasting menu for an additional fee, of course... *Yellowtail belly was superb with a nice citrusy zing. *Beef fat fries were crispy and tasty, and the concomitant hummus-like dipping sauce was delicious. *Sweet & Sour Pig Ears were easily the best things on the menu. Kinda like ax lightly crispy, sweet, and sour chicharron that was incredibly moreish. I wish I'd ordered four of these and just called it a day tbh. *Bay Scallop crudo was fresh and refreshing. The Meh: *Our main entrées were both duds. The black cod was lackluster and quite fishy (which I think is normal for black cod) and the Truffle-glazed Chicken just tasted like a really good roast chicken, which is fine but not in an establishment like this where you expect to be blown away. *We were really looking forward to the Ricotta Gnudi, but they too were kinda flat and not much flavor. *Neither dessert was much to speak about, with the Brown Butter Maple Cremeux being the better of the two, as the Café Au Lait straight-up tasted burnt like charcoal I'm not sure if that was purposeful or they fucked up and served it regardless? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The Ugly: *Maybe the smallest wine pours I've ever experienced, but that might be SoP for these high-brow restaurants, which is why I pointed out that maybe you're better off bringing your own wine. *I'd mention the prices, but if you're coming here, you're probably already aware. TLDR: At the end of the day, despite a lackluster meal, I'm still glad we came just to knock off another foodie bucket list item. But, being 100% honest, I'm just not sure that this is really my kind of food as maybe it's just a little too bougie for my liking. Give me a plate of Jamaican Ox-tails with rice or garlic noodles over this kind of food any day of the year, and I'm a happy man. read more

Went on a Tuesday and had a great meal and a lovely time. Went around sunset and the light and ambiance were 10/10. Perfect date night with stunning wine country decor, great service, and a delicious inventive meal. Pricy but worth it for a special occasion or expense account. read more

Special experience from the moment we walked in! My favorite was the Gnudi!!! Ricotta cheese perfectly wrapped in a squash blossom blanket in a clear consumme that has a lasagna flavor. AMAZING ADD the sweet corn tagliatelle. They serve it with fresh truffle which they bring to your table in a special box and grate it right onto the dish. The wagyu ribeye does not disappoint. Cooked to PERFECTION garnished with a beautiful mushroom sauce. The service was outstanding!!!! If you love butter and bread with your meal don't be afraid to ask for it. You can either get pretzel bread or sourdough for a small charge....worth every bite. I love the spacious restaurant. A lot of people inside but you still feel like your the only one in the room and everyone is catering to you. read more

We had a mid week break, and planned a day trip to Napa - that of course included some wine tasting, as well as good food! We found availability at Press and booked! The service was pretty good. They offer 2 menus, full 7-course one, and a smaller 5-course one. We went with the 5 course one. It was pretty filling for us. The cod dish was phenomenal. The ricotta gnudi was sublime. I dined here this past winter and i'm still thinking about this meal. I got their "Black & White" tasting menu which was truffle themed. Press has a great all Californian wine selection, which made this even more of a special Napa dinner. I also got one of their zero proof cocktails called "Push Pop" and I highly recommend it. The lanterne pasta was mouthwatering and the eye of ribeye was cooked so well and had a delectable sauce. I added on the caviar pretzel for an additional price and it was perfection. I loved how even the dessert had truffle on it. The vibe of this restaurant was like no other, it is so classy and the big clock from an old train station is such a stunning piece. There is no way I could go to Napa and not dine here again! read more

We booked a table in the bar so we weren't required to have the coursed menu. But we decided on the 5 course and it was outstanding. Be sure to add on the pretzel with caviar. Top notch. Service was excellent. Ambiance was lovely, My only complaint is that a restaurant who boasts 11,000 bottles of wine has such a limited menu of wine by the glass. There were only 3 cabs by the glass which were around $45, $195 and $200+ for a glass. That seems outrageous there aren't more medium priced choices given the extensive amount of bottles they carry. Press has a very cute set up inside their barn like structure. It is filled with natural lighting! Our server was super friendly and recommended good wines and cocktails to try. Some of the "fruits de mer" we're a bit too fishy for me, but the pretzel and caviar was absolutely worth the supplement to split with the table. I also enjoyed the gnudi and the chocolate truffle. All in all, it was a nice experience with unique flavors. I probably would not return just because it is expensive but I'm glad I did it read more

We were able to get a table for 5 on a Friday night to celebrate a friends 40th birthday. It was a very special touch that the staff had a card waiting and signed by everyone. Service was decent, nothing spectacular and mind blowing but overall on par. I will note that my husband and I were 4 mins behind the rest of the group, they did order sparkling water for us and by time we sat down we still waited several minutes before it was brought out. Not a huge deal but something to point out. We did do the larger chef menu which I believe did have the right amount of food. Some of the courses were slightly underwhelming, for example the duck. The skin was not crispy enough and more on the raw side, needed just an extra minute in order to be perfect. The chocolate dessert was a bit tart for my taste, wasn't my favorite. I do think it's hard to nail every single dish on the menu so I would still recommend this restaurant for anyone wanting to try out the experience. On a different note, I do believe that a restaurant with a Michelin star should have enough servers to plate the table at the exact same time which they didn't do for us. read more
