​I visited The Family Puppy today while in town for work…read more I was excited to see this place after entering the mall as i LOVE dogs. When i walked in I noticed there were designated places to interact with the dogs and puppies and there were a significant number of dogs in cages. There were at least 4 employees working, answering questions and taking out and returning puppies to their cages. There were maybe 5 families and or groups of people inside the store. I connected with a specific dog and wanted to ask questions about it. I waited at his cage for about 5 or six minutes. ​During the time I was standing directly in front of the cage, I made eye contact with 2 employees, and waited for someone to acknowledge me. Not once was I greeted or asked if I needed help. Meanwhile, I watched as every other family and individual who walked through the door was greeted IMMEDIATELY and offered assistance. ​I am a self-assured woman and I know my value, so their lack of greeting doesn't change how I feel about myself. However, I am sharing this so others are aware of the environment here. It is a shame that in a store full of families and pets, the "warm welcome" seems to be reserved for a specific demographic. ​The reality of my experience: Every single person was seen, except for me.

So I went today to see what was going on. Not only did they not improve they almost downgraded their care for the animals. I walked straight to the birds because I have a bird at home (NOT FROM PETCO) so I feel very passionate about them! I walk over and see that the bird looks like it has been neglected for 3 months! The nails were so long they where curling in, the bird had clipped wing which I think is ridiculous especially if you are not gonna give the bird attention why clip its wings. Then I look at the enclosure itself and see one old toy then I see the water that looks like it was last changed two weeks ago. And the food had literal dust on it birds are dusty but come on I don't want dandruff on my food. Whilst I'm looking at all this terrible gross food water and care in general the employees are all sitting around the cash register talking while animals are basically being abused in their care. Overall terrible experience there is absolutely no reason for this care and I think there is no reason we should be shopping at petco period there are so many local places that actually care for the animals DONT COME HERE PLEASE.

The owners are dog lovers and protect them even if they have to disappoint customers. ie-window tapping by customers is forbidden, puppy handling is strictly monitored and done is a special area after they explain how to hold pups and once a pup is selected, absolutely no customers are allowed to touch that pup except the family it will be joining. The puppies are taken home at night, which I believe is why my dog is so well adjusted and without phobias. He is clearly a dog who has only known happiness and kindness. When they send the dog home with its new family, they set up an appointment after hours so they can carefully explain dog care without interruptions. We also received a package which included a wellness check at a local vet, an in-home training session/safety check, food supply (same as what he was already eating to avoid digestive issues) and other goodies. The store carries a great selection of high quality items--the clothes are irresistible and I always find something I just have to get!
