The fill valve on my toilet broke late Saturday afternoon so, in a panic, I called Preferred Plumbing and Humberto agreed to come right over - the only positive aspect in dealing with him. Although, per his request, I sent him a video and picture of the broken valve, he showed up with a new one that did not even resemble the defective part and, of course, would not work after he took the toilet apart. He said he would check the local hardware stores for the proper valve - unless I wanted to replace the entire toilet, which I declined - and would call me the next day. When we spoke on Sunday, he said he could not find the proper valve and would have to order a new one which would take "about 3 days." Only then did he ask me to send another picture with the model number displayed on the toilet! I decided to order the part myself and to notify him when it arrived. However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that Humberto was incompetent and wanted no more to do with him. I called him, informed him that he was fired, and agreed to pay him $75 for the original service call. When I asked where I should send the check, he complained because I do not use Zelle and it would take days for a check to reach him by mail. We finally agreed that he could pick it up, but when he arrived, he objected because I had written the check to Preferred Plumbing and insisted that I make it out to him personally - Humberto Agudo. That seemed suspicious to me, but I complied just to get rid of him. In retrospect, I have learned a lesson from this experience and will be more diligent in the future. Only one of the 5-star reviews was from Monterey County and, I suspect, are not legitimate. He was very rude, continually interrupting, and extremely unprofessional. He treated me like I'm stupid, suggesting repeatedly that I should get an entirely new toilet. I screwed up, but I'm not stupid. DO NOT HIRE THIS MAN! read more

Humberto responded quickly after I reached out. He installed a smart water valve. He did not leave until the job was done right - which was well into the evening. Reasonable pricing. The water heater at our rental in Monterey gave out on a Sunday! Received numerous requests thru Yelp and decided on Preferred Plumbing. That same day Humberto purchased a new water heater and installed it. The pipes of the old water heater did not match up with the new one so he had to relocate the pipes. He did an excellent job. Humberto was great, he kept in touch during the the week to ask about the work we were requesting so that he could be as prepared as possible and bring the correct fittings for our outdoor shower install. He arrived on time and spent ALL DAY working on the project and didn't give up even though he had to keep going inside and outside in the rain to do the work. Even when it got dark outside he kept working until the job was done. I really needed the job to be done that day so that other work did not have to be rescheduled so it really helped me that he didn't leave until the job was done. He also bid the job pretty low, way less than others. I was so happy with him that I gave him a $100 tip. He deserved it after putting up with all that rain that day that complicated things and made for *miserable* working conditions. I really encourage you to give this company a try. A nice guy who is starting his own business and gives great effort and deserves your support. He doesn't have a lot of reviews but so what, people have to start somewhere, right?
