My husband and I had Prantls create our wedding cake for October 30, 2021. The cake was beautiful and delicious-- our guests loved it! During the booking process in May 2021, we were told that we would receive a smaller version of our wedding cake on our 1st anniversary. They even told us that although we would receive the top of our cake to keep, to not even worry about trying to preserve it because they never even taste good after a year and we'd get a fresh cake anyway, so it was pointless. This was actually a big selling point in choosing their bakery. Flash forward to our 1st anniversary. We don't hear anything about our anniversary cake, so we reached out to them on November 1, 2022 to ask about its status. We were rudely told that they no longer provide fresh anniversary cakes and that were just given "bad information" during booking. Although they acknowledged their mistake, they told us they would not be honoring what was agreed upon last year. We told them how disappointed we were because we were literally talked out of keeping the top of our cake by their employees and now didn't have any piece of our wedding cake to celebrate with a year later. After a few messages back and forth, on November 2, 2022 we were told that they would make an exception for us and asked us when we wanted to pick up the cake. We were so excited and thanked them for their help. We let them know 2 dates (Friday the 4 and Monday the 7) that we would be available to pick it up. Since then we have been totally ghosted by their wedding services. I attempted to reach back out to them on confirming the pick up date on November 3, letting them know that since we hadn't heard anything to go ahead and just make the pick up date Monday the 7. On November 7, I reached back out to them know that I would be stopping by for the cake and still heard nothing. We thought that as we let them know we wanted it by Monday the 7 that it would be ready for pick up even though we hadn't heard anything. But I showed up to find the bakery closed. This tells me 1 of 2 things; they never bothered to read our emails, or they purposefully ignored our messages. Regardless, it confirms that they never intended to gift us the cake. They simply told us what we wanted to hear and then ghosted us in the hopes that we would leave them alone. We could not be more disappointed in the service that we received from what's supposed to be one of the best bakeries in Pittsburgh. read more

The pastries here are DIVINE! The highly recommended burnt almond torte was delicious! It reminds me a lot of a Chinese cake that has toasted almonds on the side of a moist cake. I'd be surprised if the baker of the first cake tried this and took inspiration from that! The cake was so moist, the almonds were amazingly toasted, and overall it made me instantly want more bites! The bear claw was also delicious! The pastry's flaky-ness was just right and it still help its shape after cutting it instead of flaking apart. I wanted to hate Prantl's. I am routinely disappointed in people's favorite bakeries in this city. So when people raved about Prantl's, I'm all, "All you Pittsburghers are the same." Nope, y'all. Prantl's is something special, and it is my new obsession. Apple Strudel ($2.49): The best thing they make. PACKED full of apples and cinnamon. The pastry crust is flaky and perfect. This is one of the best apple strudels I have ever eaten, and the slices are huge for the price. Burnt Almond Torte Bar ($3.99): I know this is the home-run hitter for most people so I had to try it. The cups are kind of over priced a $1.50 for a bite or two so definitely get the bar. I hate nuts in my desserts, but I LOVE this. This dessert is so unique and delicious. A must try. Pepperoni Roll ($2.29): Super cheap for the quality. And the good help (More on this later) will offer to heat it up for you! Large Lady Lock ($2.49): I don't like Lady Locks. They are too sweet for my taste. My mom said she really liked the one I got her, though! I will say, the desserts are very sweet. I usually cut them into small pieces and eat them over a few days, but that is the way I like dessert. Also, some of the help is fantastic and some REALLY suck. Why do places like this with huge displays of stale cakes and over-frosted cookies attract so many customers, even though their quality is poor? Some alternatives with much better food: go to La Gourmandine (Hazelwood or Lawrenceville) if you want superb almond croissants (as good as the croissants in Paris, perhaps). If you love cake, try the Opera cake at Jean Marc Chatellier in Millvale. If I were ordering a wedding cake, I'd do it there. My new lab manager brought in a burnt almond torte cake from Prantl's today for another labmate who's leaving. None of us labbies had tried this famed Pittsburgh treat before, but we knew that the one who's leaving is a fan, since she's ordering a burnt almond torte wedding cake (genius!). Given all of the hype, we were eager to sample this unique dessert, and as usual with much-hyped things, I was skeptical. I knew the cake was a winner as soon as I put a bite of it in my mouth. It was light and fluffy, consisting of a layer of creamy, custardy goodness between two layers of cake, and light, sweet icing topped with flakes of almond with sugar sprinkled over them. The combination of textures was the most unique I've ever tasted in a cake, and between the fluffiness, creaminess, and crunchiness, it was oh-so-satisfying. The flavors were a surprisingly rich blend of vanilla, almond, and buttery goodness. The cake literally melted in my mouth--no chewing was necessary, except for the topping. As the icing on the cake (no pun intended!), the cake was beautifully decorated with colorful icing flowers and piped script, which brightened up the cake and made it a pleasure to behold. While it was a bit on the pricey side ($45 for a half-sheet cake), it was worth every penny. For those just wanting to try a single portion of this legendary concoction, Prantl's serves burnt almond torte bars (not sure how much they cost). ok this pleasingly plump sista loves some baked goods. Now let me start off by saying I grew up going to this bakery til I discovered Oakmont Bakery. I moved back to the east end, I said "self instead of driving all the way to oakmont just go to shadyside". when I went to pick up the cake it had a crack going across the top of the happy birthday part. the guy said o that's just from the size of the cake and just stood there looking at me and my husband like we should b fine with that. so we asked him to fix it and he took it to the back and came out with this funky H on the happy. yep we paid full price his explanation "It still taste good"..........guess what!! They have great selection of pastries and cookies to choose from. My mother is a bigger fan than I am but nonetheless the are still good. I'd recommend a cream puff or something that has glaze one it. They are located in shady side which is convenient if you are a college student or work close to hear. I use buy from them on my way home from pitt but they do close early around 6pm I believe unless they changed their hours. My favorite is the Burnt almond torte which can be addictive. The almonds are so sweet and crunchy and buttery. It is an excellent make me feel better treat. read more

This review is based solely on the burnt almond torte. Good friends on the east coast had this famous cake shipped to us in California. It was very carefully packed with ice above and below. Bubble wrap around it. The cake itself was on cardboard and sealed in plastic wrap. I was surprised that it was completely intact. A few almonds strayed but that would have happened on a five minute ride home. We both enjoyed the cake a lot. A simple white cake with a whisper of custard, good frosting a lots of toasted almonds. Nothing fancy, really, but good real taste. No neon fake tasting frosting with weird sprinkles and layers of goop between poofy tasteless cake layers. If I lived closer I would get this cake again. I'm a former baker so I rate cakes pretty rigorously and this one passes with room to spare. read more

MY OH MY can prantl's make a Cali girl feel like she's in heaven! Came here today for the famous almond torte and left with an almond torte, apple strudel, and a pizza roll. All reminded me of Beyonce, they were friggin fabulous. I did have to scrape some of the torte's frosting off because I did not want to overdue the sweets. I normally do this with cakes and cupcakes so this is not a diss to Prantl's. It is a diss to myself for not being a part of the frosting is the best part of the cake club. I was very disappointed in the service and quality of my cake I got for my mother's birthday. First, I was told the cake would be done within an hour. I arrived and it took an additional 15-20 minutes. I had somewhere to go and I ended up missing my ride because of the tardiness. Second, I ask for a specific message on the cake. When the cake finally came out, it was missing the main thing I wanted. The guy I spoke with apologized and gave me cookies because I paid for something I didn't get. I would've preferred to get my money back but that wasn't an option. I visited my mother recently and she told me to never order from Prantl's in shadyside again for her because the entire cake was frosting! I never had to deal with this before. However the reason for the 3 stars is because there were only two employees working today and a line out the door. There were too many customers for the employees to work efficiently and on top of that the employee that helped us had an awful attitude. Looking through past reviews, many talk about the Almond Torte and various other items, but I've happened to visit around holidays or busy mornings when my goal is to get in and out...leading me to try other seemingly less-hyped items. And boy have they been a great choice! On my first visit it was Easter and I wanted to bring a treat for the family. The staff member who helped me suggested the cinnamon bread. It was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made. Not only was the bread fresh, but the cinnamon sugar was throughout the entire bread. There wasn't one piece, or complaint, from anyone about it lacking flavor (as cinnamon breads can sometimes be as you get to the middle of the loaf). As the holiday went on, many family members were grabbing it instead of a cookie or other treats around. I did also grab a few "Almond Torte Bites" instead of the full torte to give it a try as well. Even though they are good, they are VERY sweet and not what my tastebuds are looking for. I was very glad to have gotten the bites instead of the larger cake itself. Most importantly, the staff was super helpful, patient, and attentive even though the store was in full swing, with a line basically out the door. My most recent visit was today for #nationaldonutday! There are a lot of options, but there is something about the traditional glazed donut that takes the cake. I don't remember the last time I had a truly good homemade donut like this - it literally melted in my mouth. There's also something nostalgic about it that makes you feel like you're reliving a moment in your grandma's kitchen. Very disappointed. Ordered in advance online Thursday for Saturday pick up. The order was for the $28 chocolate burnt almond torte and 3 bars of regular burnt almond torte @ $4.99 each. When we went to pick up the order they brought out the chocolate torte then the clerk disappeared for close to 10 minutes, finally returning with the news that they were out of the small bar tortes. I was basically dumbfounded at the lack of professionalism--barely any concern or apology over the missing half or our order and absolutely no offer of a refund. The order had been paid by card online, the $15 difference was made up by picking our a few other items which proved to be the highlight of the experience. I figured the inconvenience would be erased by the absolute splendor of the chocolate torte but I was very wrong. This cake was rock hard around a 1" perimeter inward and the cake was very stale. It didn't taste of freezer burn but more like it had been sitting out uncovered AWHILE. Also, our goods were boxed up but there was no tape or string to secure them shut, the boxes were gaping open and hard to handle. Very unprofessional all around. I still can't believe our order had not been placed aside in it's entirety, isn't the point of placing an order to guarantee you get what you want???? I'm calling for a refund tomorrow and if they aren't co-operative I'll dispute it with the bank and follow up here with more comments. This is definitely not the Prantl's of my youth. read more

Wow!! Wow!! Wow!! I am hooked on Prantl's offering the most unique and truly the very best Almond torte my family and I have ever enjoyed!! It all began when I popped into the N.Huntington store while visiting Pittsburgh and low and behold I was fortunate enuf to meet the manager, Jeannie who was the sweetest most helpful lady along with her amazing staff --sorry I can't recall their names! But--Jeannie helped me that day with my immediate order---and then I was so excited bc I was also able to send a torte back to Hawai'i! Jeannie handled it all for me and it arrived last nite along with the jr pastry bite size teasers that were truly a guest hit!! Everything was just beautiful in the N.Huntington store, clean, with beautiful cases of so many varieties to choose from. Jeannie and her people are amazing and I look fwd to ordering more goodies to ship to Hawaii --from Prantl's my new favorite mainland bakery!! Prantls I used to love Prantl's. USED TO being the words of import in that sentence. Back when the actual Prantl family owned it, it was basically a staple of Shadyside, and Pittsburgh in general. Now, it's garbage. Two owners later, the prices are higher than ever but the quality is awful. My mother, who can't let go of the past, still wants a marble cake for every birthday/ Mother's Day/anniversary even though we get it and she remarks "it wasn't that good this time..." Well, here are, and Mother's Day has arrived and guess what? Prantl's fucked me again. I called and ordered a marble cake with Happy Mother's Day and flowers on it. First, they quoted me a price of $16.99 when I ordered it on the phone. So, when I went to pick it up, not only was I charged $20.99, they didn't have any flowers on it and THEY WROTE HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY IN WHITE ICING. THE FUCKING CAKE IS WHITE!!!! I didn't realize until I got home how much I was charged, so I called. Again, over the phone they told me the price for a marble was $16.99, and $18.99 with "decoration". So when I asked why I was just charged $20.99, the girl said "oh, the price went up." WTF? Really, WTF? I want to know in what normal world do you use white icing to a write on a white cake? Please people, I implore you, don't waste your money. You want a great, amazing, fantastic bakery? Try FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD in Highland Park on Bryant Street. Prantl's is an amazing neighborhood bakery. I walk by on walnut often but have only been in a few times. They have an air vent out to the street blowing out fresh smells of the bakery...oh so tempting! I recently stopped in with family from out of town and tried a variety of their offerings. The cookies were good, as was one of the apricot pastries. The star of the show though was the burnt almond torte. Seriously, one of the best cakes and deserts period that I have ever had. We ordered a dozen of the buttercream and chocolate for Thanksgiving. The cookie was so hard it was inedible. The pumpkin roll purchased was horribly dry and I ended up throwing it out. 50 dollars for a dozen cookies and pumpkin roll! Wasted! Previously I ordered a chocolate burnt almond torte and received the vanilla. It was for my daughter graduation and she had requested that (she doesn't like the vanilla one). I had ordered a white cake and received chocolate. Nothing but problems. For starters, the burnt almond torte. Not as good as everyone says it is! So much pride for such a mediocre bakery item. The cake is good and is about as good as white cake can possibly get. But the rest? The frosting tastes just like walmart's but-r-cream with almond flavouring added! Absolutely disgusting. It's in a 1 cm thick layer around the cake, topped with almonds and granulated sugar. I found myself digging out the cake from the frosting, eating that, and discarding everything else. No love for the flagship product at all. Their bakery items aren't great either. Crappy croissants, stale, overpriced items that don't taste like they were even that good fresh. Some traditional european items are present, which is good if you want to be able to purchase those things. Can't attest to their quality however. So with all the negativity, why 3 stars? Because of their donuts. Prantl's makes a damn good donut. For me, these are the only things worth getting from here.
