Not the same Prairie Bay we came to know and love. Stopped in with the family to have a drink and bite in the bar. We had to wait 20 minutes to be seated in the bar even though there were only two other tables in there. While waiting, a gentleman came in then promptly left when told it would be a 20 minute wait for a drink. Upholstered bench in waiting area was dirty and had a large wet spot (pointed out to us by another guest that was waiting--thank you!). There was no bartender working...the waitress had to make our drinks. None of the wait staff looked happy. Ordered pizza's which were much smaller than the pizza's we used to get there. The whole concept seemed weird...Italian food on one side of the menu, and Prairie Bay food on the other, but again-not the selection or quality of food that Prairie Bay used to be known for. read more

In town for a quick overnight stay and usually end up here for a good dinner. Their drink menu is creative and unique so I started with a "Just Juice All Organic Beet-tini ". It was refreshing and delish. The second course of chicken cranberry salad was a lot of food for a half salad and unfortunately came with a large chunk of chicken fat that hadn't been trimmed off. I had the brisket for the main course and it was a good meal. The horseradish sauce could have been horsier. Overall a good meal-took off the fifth star for the chicken fat. Ambitious menu. We arrived at 3, which is when most servers are flagging after the lunch rush so that would explain the long minutes til we got water. My companions' salads looked heavy, over-chopped and rather limp. The Reuben was fantastic though the sauce that came with it could not possibly have been Thousand Island. My charcuterie "app" was a groaning board of cured meats, cheese and fruit nestled into a giant, warm, and puffy pretzel. I wanted to like it but no. First, the cheeses were just two kinds of bland white-something--and the bleu cheese totally missing. The fruit was, like, the dregs. One grape cut in half. A few skinny slices of a tiny Red Delicious (should be a tart variety instead!). Five blueberries. Two very strange dipping sauces, one the very same, aforementioned, totally tasteless "Thousand Island." They need to re-think this one. And $20. What?! So I've been to this place once before because of the fact they have the local Jack Pine Brewery on tap. It was past lunch rush and I was expecting that level of service that you usually get but nope. Rachel took care of me no problem. I went with her recommended lunch special of a smoked turkey sandwich with mixed greens, provolone cheese, some thousand island dressing on 9 grain. That light smoke with the greens and cheese was awesome. It also came with a red pepper purée soup and a mixed green salad. Awesome. I literally drank the last of my cup cause the spoon wasn't working for me. F'n spoon. Your dead to me. Happy hour (4-6 everyday, closed Sunday's) gets you their 2-1 pizza deal and the selection of what they offer looks great. Definitely will be back. read more

While perusing around the home town of Brainerd, worth while cuisine is far fetched. We had a coupon to do the bruschetta bar, so we gave PBG a try. The bruschetta bar was soooo awesome! Baguettes with pesto, tomato basil sauce, sun dried tomatoes, mozzarella, sliced tomatoes, red peppers, caramelized onion, portobello shrooms, parm cheese, and a huge roasted garlic clove. Literally could have split this with all 5 of us for a nice snack with our brews. I would recommend going here with a group and having this with the donut bar, which we didn't have room for. My family has had it and spoke highly of it. Service and ambience was average, and prices were a bit high for everything we had on the menu. Bruschetta platter was $17 was probably appropriately priced. The coconut pepper stuffed shrimp were not worth 12 bucks. Just 4 of them and they were literally bite size. The beet salad wasn't worth while either, it was supposed to feature quinoa but the quinoa was a big glue ball of carbs. Strange. I think the pizza menu was impressive featuring pizzas such as chicken Brie Apple and shrimp ceviche among like 10 other unique pizzas. My mom wanted a plain cheese pizza which was not bad, but I wish we could have tried one of their specialties! Overall for Brainerd, you can do far far worse. I wish Ivens on the bay was still around, that would put this place to shame. But unfortunate they were sold to Northern Cowboy. :( We will be back for the mini donut bar and bruschetta for certain!! read more

Listen, there are a few ways to debunk some of the rumors about this place. "No Napkins" as said by Nikki M is truly preposterous. Each customer is provided with a roll of silver wear that includes a linen. If you want another you can always ask. There is nothing that you are deprived of. She also claimed they were out of 'Burgers and Orange Juice and Croutons which is truly confusing. How are they out of Orange Juice and Croutons if they are both hand made in the restaurant? Nonetheless that just proves that you can never really trust yelp because ANYONE can post their review. Even if they are just pretending to have been a customer. Anyways- There are a few things to think about before eating here. 1- What day is it? This restaurant is PACKED on Friday and Saturday. Which leads me to question why the Yelp page doesn't have a better rating. Actually it's not that much of a question because most customers are 45+. 2. What's your budget? If you're ordering one plate it will be about an average of 14 dollars. It's all worth it. 3. Loved this place overall but room for improvement ! We were seated inside right away and got excellent service from the start. The server was patient with us as we figured out which appetizers to get. We chose the salmon flatbread which was actually more like a greasy sandwich- would not order again. I concur with the other reviews - not only very slow service, but some things we never even received (e.g., napkins). This place is like the restaurant after-thought of a catering business. We were there on a Monday and they were apparently cleaned out because they were out of A LOT of things (burgers and orange juice and croutons and the list goes on). The food did eventually arrive, but it was not very good. It was like food you get at a conference luncheon. Walleye was super greasy. Steak was actually ok (I recommend that if you have to eat here). Salad was sad - see attached photo of my "ceaser salad" - it was literally just lettuce (all of it limp and sad; half of it brown). The bill (for 3 of us) was over $100. Normally I would not recommend fast food, but save yourself the time and money and just get something else. read more

This place was great. I came on a work trip and there was 6 people in our group for a Wednesday night dinner. We didn't require a reservation even though it was crowded which was great. The food was amazing. All six of us ordered something different and all six of us had nothing but praise for the meals. Superbly well done and presentation is phenomenal. We stopped at Prairie Bay on our way from Minneapolis up to a summer camp up North. I am highly selective when it comes to restaurants & food in general. I want it to be COOKed, not just warmed up or plucked from the freezer & deep fried. Prairie Bay is a scratch kitchen who are also intentional about local sourcing & working with ethical suppliers. They proudly list many of the local farms on a chalk wall above their open kitchen. They even listed a few local Amish producers by first name. The food was so unexpectedly good that we stopped again later the same day for dinner. I really appreciate places that are intentional with the food they're making. That's holistic. That's cooking with love. Well done. They even do a bunch of fun community gatherings like book clubs gatherings & a sushi night (There were others too. I just cant remember.) I ordered from here on door dash the other day I've been here many times. I called and was upset after my order was canceled by the restaurant after 40 minutes of waiting for my meal. I called and of course was upset only to be called an "asshole" by the manager and refused service for being an asshole. I was refused service long before I called for no reason. He also said he doesn't need or want my business. I asked for a call from the owner which never happened. I've dined here for many years as well as colleges and customers from all over the world. Inconsistent. My dad and I went here for lunch one day and the food and service were great. I decided to take my parents and husband here a few days later for dinner and it was a huge disappointment . The waitress was awful. We asked what the soup was and I kid you not.... she said "I dunno some kind of bisque".... she didn't even go ask just kept looking at us. My mom asked something about a wine listed and she said I'm new and too young to drink so I don't know... the service was so slow that people were getting up to leave. My meal was so salty and cold it was inedible. The other three people I was with didn't have anything good to say about their meals. The whole experience was terrible. I'd say a normal dinner experience is generally somewhere around an hour. The experience we had was 2.5 hours, not by choice but because of how slow everything was. I went to prairie bay tonight with a companion. Both of us were very pleased, both with the meal and the service. When it came to pay, I had three gift cards purchased in the past, one less than a year ago. Each of these cards were purchased for 100 dollars. Prairie bay had no way to read any of the cards. I knew one had never been used, was pretty sure another had the 100, not sure on the third. Anyway, the upshot was that I got 200 dollars in credit. And I was told the money was coming directly from prairie bays pocket. Not true. They got the money when I bought the gift cards. Anyway, my advice is go to prairie bay. Eat there and enjoy the wonderful food and service. But never, ever buy a gift card. read more

Ok. The bottom line here is that the food is delicious, but the service is lacking. Servers need to be more attentive to empty beverages and noticing when patrons are finished eating --we shouldn't have to wait for 20 minutes post meal for our plates to be cleared and our check to be delivered. Some of the best Food I have had in the lakes area. We walked in the door and you could just tell by the workers and service that this place was about to be good!! We were seated quickly, and had water in front of us in a timely manner! (Believe me that's hard to come by sometimes) the menu was perfect size and such a great variety you could have pizza and pasta or seafood and steak and even mix some Mexican in there you could have it all!! We got the chicken/sausage penne and the apple chicken Brie pizza. Me and one other person halved both of these and it was AMAZING. Let me tell you something about the sauce on that penne we still are not sure what it is but it was absolutely to die for. And the chicken and sausage were very flavorful and awesome! We have always likes this place but today was a trial. Waitress brought wrong appetizer.. Ordered Pork Satay. Wasn't on a stick but I figured this is Minnesota. She didn't come back for awhile then came by and said we had Duck and our Pork would be right up. She then delivered meat balls that were mushy. Still no stick or peanut sauce. I would not order either Appetizer again as they were equally terrible. Asked for Parmesan for my Pizza and told that the 3inch circle in the middle of the pizza was it. Although we have only stopped at P B G for lunch. It has always been exceptional. You cannot go wrong with the daily lunch soup, salad, and sandwich special. Last Friday's selection once again flavorful, filling, and far above the typical fare you find in the area for lunch. We enjoy going on the Gull Lake dinner cruise which was catered by PBG the 5 times we have taken friends to celebrate special occasions . Nice cruise with outstanding food on very nice boat. Definitely a favorite. Lovely ambiance in the dining area and still very comfortable in the bar area. Their entire menu is absolutely amazing. The goat cheese and mushroom pizza is my favorite. My family also loves the chicken apple brie pizza as well- and did you know you can order pizzas to go? Perfect to take to a local brewery just down the road! Their taco bowls are amazing, all of the salads, burgers, pasta- everything is so tasty. I haven't been disappointed in anything I've ordered. The pricing is fair. The cocktails are good. We recently stopped by here hoping to celebrate my mother-in-law's birthday for lunch. We arrived at about 2pm on a Saturday and the parking lot was only half full; we expected that the lunch rush was dying down by then. We were very much looking forward to the meal because we've loved their food in the past, but ended up very disappointed. All the hostess said was, "We do not have a table, and we *will not* have a table." We could clearly see open spots in the restaurant. I'm pleased to see the "locavore" concept expanding from high end white tablecloth restaurants to more moderately priced, neighborhood establishments. I am even more pleased to find a place serving locally sourced, fresh, quality food in the chain restaurant hell of the Brainerd lakes area. Prairie Bay's menu covers a fair amount of ground. Small plates range from calamari to sushi. Entrees include walleye (of course), steaks, and pasta. The selection of sandwiches includes a burger made with locally sourced grass fed beef. I chose to focus on the wood fired pizza. As a solo diner eating in the bar, I was able to take advantage of the two-for-one happy hour pizza deal. My "margarita" pizza featured copious quantities of basil, tomato and mozzarella cheese, all crowned by a whole head of roasted garlic sitting in the middle of the pie. My "seasonal forest mushroom and cheve" pizza came with quantities of flavorful mushrooms and just the right amount of goat cheese sprinkled over all. The bartender was very friendly and more than happy to provide me with a box to tote my leftovers back to the hotel room. Also offered are a solid selection of wines and beers, the latter including various craft brews on a rotating basis. I liked the fact that the locals seem to support this place. Nearly everyone in the room except me was from the area. That said, the staff was very welcoming to this refugee from "the Cities." Went on Tuesday for the Sushi Night special. I can say that there was nothing special about it. The special comes with 7 different varieties of items. Of the 7 only 1 had fresh cut fish the other 3 were deep fried (not even in tempura) or the other 3 had no fish in them what so ever.
