Typical small town bar. If you're a local this would be a great place to hang out and socialize with everyone. I got the bbq cheeseburger and it was ok, nothing special, just a burger. Beer was refreshing. If you're hungry I'd recommend other places but if you're starving it works. Bar tender was friendly and they have a decent selection of beer. read more

We visit The Deer Stand every Summer in Deerwood with the kids, and it is a great find! The place is affordable, family-friendly, and easy to access, which made it perfect for a casual outing. It's a great place to stop for a beer, burger or entree. Specials every night. And we stopped in during a basketball tournament for the Wednesday special. Great deal for salad bar, baked potatoes and ribs or shrimp or liver was what my husband ate. The decor is awesome and there was a full body deer mount. Again my husbands words not mine. Amazing food, started with the cheese curds with raspberry jalapeno sauce at the recommendation of the waitress. They were by far the best cheese curds I have ever had!! The burger was done perfectly medium just like I had asked for and was delicious. I couldn't resist having dessert and tried a flour less chocolate torte that they called Betty La Mae. They also included a 4% increase if you are paying with card (so make sure you bring cash) Also, if you are picking up, they stick on a 2% pickup fee. So it wasn't worth the $63 for burnt pizza. A very solid place especially to grab a cold beer. Located just down the road from Ruttgers. If you want a break from the resort a pit stop to The Deerstand is a good call. Not what I expected for a "up north" kind of restaurant. It was a great experience for us both: from the unique decor to the great service to the good food and salad & soup bar. My cajun spiced steak was prepared perfectly (medium rare, please) and my locally produced (just down the road) wild rice was delicious. This is without a doubt a four star place. Service was prompt and polite! I ordered the special of the day, all you can eat ribs. The wait time was under 10 minutes. The salad bar comes with special. Not a spectacular salad bar but had plenty to choose from. BBQ is much better than Famous Daves!! The BBQ sauce is fresh and homemade by the owner. Great sweet taste. The fries were the weak link, certainly frozen. No cornbread? A couple areas for growth. This place does have a great story. The owner told me shortly after he bought the place, it was burglarized. Burglars took all the copper and stole all the cash mounted on the ceiling. YES I said mounted on the ceiling. Apparently people leave their mark by signing $1 bills and they are mounted to ceiling over the bar. Back to the story, the burglars "cashed in" signed dollars at the local casino. The casino had video and ID of the burglars. Busted!! Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Bar seating as well. Plenty of TVs. Coke products and "cold" ketchup! Located next to RR tracks so you hear the rumble and horn ever once in awhile but that is a plus in my book! Worth the stop. read more

Our group had 12 people at three tables near each other. There was only one other station in our waiter's section. It was twenty minutes after we were seated, before our waiter made it over to see if we wanted any beverages, ten minutes before anyone received their drinks, and another fifteen minutes before he came to take our menu order. As I said, there was only one other table for him to serve. Total wait time to order forty-five minutes. Food came out about twelve minutes later. I had the Rib Platter. The Rib/Walleye Special was over cooked, ribs were burnt & dehydrated, walleye had a burnt fishy taste. The bacon on the bacon cheese burger was burnt. There are limited options in the area, and it is a resort area and they can get busy and they don't staff up or down much because it's a pretty small place and they are going to do their best. The raspberry sauce was made in house and was fresh, spicy, and sweet all at the same time. I also ordered the half rack of ribs and 5 piece shrimp dinner. Ugh, stopped in on a Sunday @ 2:30pm and we were the only table, not terribly surprised. Ordered salad bar that comes with potato (mashed, fries or baked). Ordered baked potato loaded with cheese, bacon & sour cream and the server said "we don't do that"! I then ordered side of bacon bits and cheese and would build it myself or get my cheese off of the salad bar. Ate my salad and abracadabra a cheesy, bacon potato appeared, magically they created a loaded potato. Tasted pretty good too... Now the fun part, server charged $4 for bacon & 50 cents for the same shredded cheddar from the salad bar! If you ordered bacon to add to a hamburger it was $1. Great job Deerstand, I won't be back... I believe they call that gouging, shameful. read more

I had never eaten at this place under the previous ownership even though I'm in the area often. Not because of any specific reason, I guess I just didn't get around to it. It closed down for awhile and a new owner took over. A few weeks ago I wound up stopping in with 3 others and we decided to try their pizza. Someone in the group had heard it is quite good here. So we ordered a couple pizzas. It took forever to get them. In fact, another group came in about 10 minutes after us, ordered their meals (typical burgers etc), got their meals, ate their meals, finished their meals and when we finally got our pizzas(actually the first pizza) they were leaving. The pizzas came out one at a time too. As in we had the first one polished off already when the second came out. It was just poor timing and made the eating feel awkward. Furthermore, the pizzas were downright expensive and I think they were nothing more than frozen things you could get from Schwanns or the grocer's freezer. Two pizza's did not fill up four adults, but the things were so expensive we felt like we'd be suckers if we got one more. Plus we didn't want to wait another hour for them to cook it lol. As far as taste goes, the pizza's were fine. Didn't have any other food, but the group next to us seemed to give their burgers passing marks too. Maybe the kinks were still being worked out in the service and timing when we were there? It just took away from the dining experience and even though the food was adequate I doubt I'll be returning unless someone else is paying. Bad first impression. read more

Confusing experience. Having never been here before, first we were kind of confused about which entrance to use. We chose to enter through what looked like the main entrance after driving to the back side of the building to access it. Upon entering, we saw a sign pointing down the stairway for the "happy hour bar", right next to a sign that said employees only on the stairway. We proceeded in on the upper lever and asked the bartender which section we were looking for in order to have drinks and apps. She said that the bar downstairs had discounted beverages, but if we wanted food we had to get it from the bar (or restaurant, I guess) upstairs. We decided to sit in the upper level as we wanted some food and there was clearly a bar there also, we just had to forgo the discounted drink prices. We chose a table, got the menu, and then couldn't find any drink prices anywhere. Asked the bartender if she had a drink menu or a posted price list - nope, all she does is push the buttons on the cash register. Price sometimes helps decide what drink to have, so we were kind of lost and started asking about certain drinks and how much they were. We heard "I don't know" with a shrug of the shoulders a lot, but she did check on a couple of the prices (long island ice tea, wine). We ended up just asking for beer because of the confusion and frustration of not having a list to choose from. The food, however, is another story - it was good! The onion rings were awesome!! Fries looked to be ordinary frozen French fries, and the buns plain pre-packaged grocery store variety, but the burgers were great! The Deer Stand could use some signage outside indicating where to enter for which experience you want - bar or restaurant, and a simple beverage list would be really helpful. If you want to serve your customers well, provide the staff with the tools they need to succeed. read more
