POWER LINES DOG PARK's a huge hit with my pups. Max, Scout, and Roxy love running around unleashed, up and down the sandy trails. I've been going at least once a week to supplement our daily neighborhood walks and dog park visits closer to home. Roxy requires regular zoomie sessions to keep her manic puppy energy manageable. we got there early Saturday morning before the marine layer burned off and things got too hot. checked out entrances on earlier visits and prefer parking in the neighborhood along the east side of the park, close to one of several gated entrances. there were mostly bigger dogs that morning which is okay since our three are in the mid-fifty to sixty pound range. other dog owners were openly friendly even though most were regulars who obviously knew each other. dog parks tend to get cliquish, but the Power Line regulars were very gracious toward us occasional interlopers. special shout out to the amazing folks who keep the dog park rest stops stocked with fresh water, hauling in mostly five gallon bottles so dogs can stay hydrated. ps: Dennis, one of the regulars, told me this morning (8/3) Eddie does most of the heavy lifting on the water. that's a whole lot of thoughtful dedication -- mad props, deep appreciation. read more

This is SDG&E property that locals have used as an off leash dog park for years. The dog owners are almost unanimously responsible. They pick up after their dogs and are very considerate. There are plastic chairs and benches available for everyone and water is often brought in for all by many dog owners. You'll note that most reviews are many years old. The place is not quite the same today as it was back then. For instance, I've experienced one highly aggressive dog with an owner that clearly does not know how to control it. I would rate the dog park a 5 if irresponsible dog owners were not an issue. Unfortunately the worst offender is there most of the time in the morning and early evening. If it was only once in a while, it would not be an issue. People have actually had to change their personal routine to avoid this particular dog and it's owner. The other itresponsible owners (there are several) encourage their dogs to join in howling sessions which are inconsiderate to surrounding home owners. There have been valid complaints from residents who live in homes along the park. Aside from these black marks, the place is normally a quiet and pleasant playground for neighborhood dogs as long as you're lucky enough to visit during hours when irresponsible dog owners are not there. It's unfortunate that everyone cannot feel safe at this dog park. read more

Happy to have a place with natural trails where dogs can go off leash! It's situated in between neighboring homes and park and supported by the community. I would wear some better hiking shoes next time since it is steep with a lot of dirt and sand. Easy to park on the street. One side wasn't gated all the way so just be sure to watch your dog closely. read more

Per the photos I just posted, BEWARE: the north entrance (i.e. Mountain Vista Dr entrance) has HUGE gaps in the fence. I was unaware of the gaps, and so with no other dogs around my friend and I let our 5 dogs roam off behind the bushes while we continued north towards the Mountain Vista fence. To our dismay, as we started to near the fence we saw our dogs on the other side of the fence walking along the sidewalk next to 45mph cars. The rest of the park is fully fenced in, but as you approach the north end, keep your dogs close to you or you just might find they were able to easily break out of the park. I still give it 4 stars.....but man, I would like to see the city extend that fence on both sides to get rid of that gap, as well as the cactus patches I mentioned in my original review. read more

I adopted a dog Shelby in May of this year and she was a little socially stunted. I really wanted to find a place where she could roam freely but also be safe and contained. Well I found out that there is such a place and it's called the Power lines Dog Park. It's in Encinitas between Rodney and Village Park Way off of Encinitas Blvd. It's also right after Flair Encinitas on Mountain Vista and it has two more entrances off of Village Run East. Its approximately 2 miles of fenced in dog run that runs along the power lines that stretch from Encinitas Blvd thru to Mountain Vista. There is a small part on Mountain Vista that the fence doesn't stretch to so exercise caution when on that side. They also provide dog poop pick up bags so you can clean up after your pooch. Shelby's social skills have improved immensely since she has been coming here. Seriously it's the highlight of her day. Most of the dogs have been coming here for around 5 years so there is definitely an established pack order formed at this park. Which is good because dogs like mine that are new learn pretty quick how to get along. I have never seen a violent fight between any of the dogs here and there are multiple breeds represented. Many of the dog parents are have bonded as well. A fact that was showcased when an opponent of the dog park was trying to get the hours reduced over 60 people showed up at city council to speak to retain the existing hours and they all knew each other. Many spoke that this park was not only an outlet for their dogs social behavior but for their own as well. Many of the people have become quite good friends outside of the park Every 3 months or so there is a sponsored clean-up day where many of the owners go to pick up any missed trash or dog waste. It is a true community of dog owners that are looking out for each other. For myself I enjoy the social aspect of it but most of all I enjoy that my dog gets to get her ya ya's out by burning her energy playing and running with her poochie pals. She sleeps better too. So if you have a dog you need to go and check out this park. I've been here over a dozen times. And my doggies and I love it! This outdoor enclosed dog park and hiking trail is the best local option in the immediate East Encinitas area. The other option is the beautiful newly built enormous 3 section doggie park off Birmingham or the famous Del Mar dog beach. However, Power Lines Dog Park is a lot more natural and outdoorsie! The park is actually one of the largest I've ever been to. I say that because, unlike other enclosed, gated parks which might be ridiculously small, or enormous dog beach areas that are open and require doggies to be on the leash at all times, here at Power Lines Dog Park, you can take your doggie off the leash and have him run, play, roam, hike, walk, and explore for up to a mile. Unfortunately, there's no doggie poop bags. And on the few occasions I have seen bags, they are difficult to find. I suggest bringing your own bags. Also, there is no water fountain or water faucet to refill or provide water to dogs. There are, however, a few water bowls near the entrance that are seldom full. So make sure to bring your dog some water for the hike. Lastly, the dogs are usually ALWAYS off their leashes. So make sure you understand that this is a true free roaming park, with no rules. This is the Wild West, folks. So have fun and enjoy the natural wilderness in a nice quiet neighborhood area! read more

Took my Rudi to the Power Lines Dog Park on Sunday. I put in the address that I found online and drove to the spot....I didn't see the park or any power lines or signs so I started to leave....I got around the corner and saw it!!!! I parked on the side of the road right next to one of the gates to enter. It didn't look impressive at all....in fact it looked "not good at all".....we started on the lowest end...I think, my Rudi loves him some climbing and hiking so we went in a went up a steep incline....I'm certainly glad we did as it turned out to be a wonderful experience. Once you get to a point where you are up on the highest point you can see how very interesting and cool this park is. It's about as wide as a football filed is long and the length is probably half mile....lots of cool trails and brush for your dog to explore. We were there for about an hour and a half and it was a very good time. I will be going back on the weekends because Rudi really liked it. The park is located between houses (backyards of all the houses on each side) each backyard fence has a gate to enter the park....very unique and if I could I'd buy a house so Rudi could go everyday. We absolutely loved this place. People were friendly and managed their dogs very well. There are several entrances and it looks completely fenced. read more

It's a trail. Actually a city/power easement between housing developments that they have designated a trail for hiking, walking and off leash dogs. All natural surroundings so your doggy can run it's little behind off. That's what our pup does. She runs, runs, runs and runs some more. People are generally very friendly there so we have gotten to know quite a few. There are no watering stations because, again, it's actually a trail but, locals bring jugs of water and set em near the entrance for anybody to put out for dogs. Only one bad thing about it is, "red fence guy". He hates people and hates barking dogs. He has dogs but ... Just stay away from him. I guess do him a favor and don't hang out near his red fence. Ha ha, it's sad I feel I need to mention this at all but there have been issues. It's all good. Just a couple more tips - it's muddy after rain, Duh! And it's hot in the afternoon, Duh again. Not much of a breeze gets to this low lying trail. Otherwise your dog will love it. read more

A great walk for you and your pooch! The walk bisects the neighborhood in village park and is open all the time (night walk anyone?). There are three (3) entrances into the park and is very accessible. Think Rancho Penasquitos Park style. Pros: - dog friendly - people are as friendly as the dogs and will say 'Hi!' - big size about 75 yards wide and about 1/2 mile long. - Zero Grass (no water wasted) Cons: - zero, READ... Zero grass. Some dogs absolutely love running in grass. - not totally fenced in in the Mountain View entrance. Your dog could potentially run into the street. - from an aesthetic point of view the power lines can be a turn off. read more

I've been coming here for probably about a year so - sometimes once or more a week and sometimes only every few months. I never would've known about it if it wasn't for a couple of cool peeps - but I'm so glad they let me in on this gem. It's a bit of a drive for me, hence the sporadic-ness but the park is huge and the people are top notch. I hadn't taken Petunia here in months but I made a point to go this morning and it was even better than I remembered. I guess she's older, a bit more calm and was just on extra good behavior so I'll bring her back more! I got to see a few of the regulars who re-welcomed us with open paws and my girl had so much fun with her friends and I had fun catching up with mine. I guess it's a bit slower now in the mornings currently while kids are out of school - it was the perfect amount of people/dogs and I might have to add this back into our rotation, at least until school starts up again. There's a new park a lot closer to my house now but the people there were just a lot more uptight and didn't seem to understand dog park ethics. Not here - everyone is laid back, welcoming, chatty (in a good way), and non judgmental of what kind of dog you have. Big and small, every dog seems to find a good match here. The South end of the park is the better part in my mind - it's completely fenced off and pretty flat and wide (plenty of space, and bushes for the dogs but even keeled for us 2-legged breeds. The North part of the park has a gate and small fence but it's fairly open, so if you have a runner you might want to avoid this part (which you can't even see from the other end). I don't enjoy doing the walk up and down the hill like some people do but there's a good 2 miles of park if you want to get away or "walk" your dog up and down to keep things moving. This is a fairly untouched area - it's not a purposefully built in dog park so I think the dogs really enjoy feeling like they're just playing out in the "wilderness" without visible fencing or "caged in" feelings. Guess I'm just projecting my thoughts here but it really is a fantastic place to get the dog, well, dog-gone tired! read more
