very yummy shaved ice with awesome af flavors so fun. service lacked a bit of warmth (haha ice cream) and wished i could do two flavors with a smaller size

I've been wanting to try Powder for a while now and finally got the chance when I was craving something sweet after dinner. We stopped by and got a large shaved ice to share - with the large you can opt for 2 flavors for $1 more. We chose the Black Sesame and Mexican Chocolate with fresh strawberries and mochi as toppings. This really hit the spot! The flavors were deliciously and really punchy. The Black Sesame was nice and nutty and the Mexican Chocolate had a nice spice to it with cinnamon. The shaved ice itself is creamy and rich without feeling heavy and the fresh toppings really made it a great sweet treat and doesn't feel quite as indulgent as the standard ice cream. Will definitely be back to try the other flavors!

Ube with coconut and black sesame with strawberries

My husband and I tried out Powder. There is a wide variety of flavor and toppings . The ube and black sesame had good flavor. The texture of the ice was nice. Definitely want to try the other flavors. Wish there was more seating.

I enjoyed trying shaved snow for the first time - light and velvety, perfect for a warm San Francisco afternoon. The ube flavor was nice and strong. The kids cup I ordered was $6. I interested in trying some of their combinations next time, which come with pre-selected flavors and toppings. Service is quick. Seating is limited to a few seats indoors and some outdoor seating. Parking in the area is tough to find.

Honestly, it was okay. Me and my friend got the matcha green tea with mochi and strawberries. The strawberries were sour, but the mochi was good. The overall matcha tasted okay.

Mango and Black Sesame

I walked in on Friday afternoon with no line. There's a lot of flavor and toppings to choose from. I had a few ideas in mind but asked the nice lady at the counter what the popular flavors are or ones she likes. She said horchata, cereal snow, and black sesame. I decided on mango and black sesame with strawberry glaze and mochi. The texture and temperature were perfect. The strawberry glaze paired well with the mango, which had an authentic taste. I like that you can actually taste the black sesame and it didn't get lost in the background. My favorite part was that there was a lot of mochi! Every bite had at least one piece and it made it until the end. The inside was cute with pictures of their catering events and merch you can purchase.

We decided to make it to Powder after my husband kept telling me about it, and I'm so glad we did! This isn't your typical grainy shaved ice; the texture is unbelievably light and fluffy, like actual snow that just melts the second it hits your tongue. I'm officially obsessed. I absolutely loved the vibrant purple color and that distinct, earthy ube flavor. I topped mine with the sweet milk cream, which made it feel so much more decadent, and added Oreo and graham cracker for some much-needed crunch. It was the perfect balance of creamy and crispy. If you're an ube fan, this is a must-order. I was seriously impressed by how fragrant this was--you can really taste the high-quality tea notes. I went with Biscoff and mochi for the toppings. The caramelized flavor of the Biscoff paired perfectly with the floral tea, and the mochi was so soft and chewy. It felt like a really sophisticated treat. The vibe of the shop is super cute, and I loved sitting outside at the wooden tables to enjoy these. I found the service to be quick and the staff really helpful while I was deciding on my toppings. It's the perfect spot for a unique dessert in the city. I'll definitely be back to try more combinations soon!

I've been curious to try Powder for almost two years since I moved to SF. The deterrent to coming has always been the fact that there's insufficient, comfortable indoor seating. There are outdoor benches, but it's rarely warm enough to linger there while trying to enjoy a frozen dessert. I finally stopped by though after dinner across the street because it was convenient. We got a kid sized bowl of the passionfruit shaved ice with mochi topping. After placing our order, we stood inside in the cramped space in front of the counter, which we shared with a few other guests. There was only bench to sit on to wait for orders, and a party ahead of us claimed it. After a few other orders, we received our shaved ice. It was really light, like snow powder, and instantly melted to nothing upon eating with nothing left but mochi to chew. I liked the flavour, and it was gone pretty quickly. I would like to come back and try other flavours like the black sesame, but the fact it's not a comfortable space to sit with friends really deters me from wanting to return. If the entryway were even larger to comfortably accommodate more people standing, I would be more incentivized. It just really isn't reasonable during the winter to consume a frozen dessert outside, and takeout isn't a good option since shaved ice is best eaten fresh as soon as it's served.

Thai tea flavor is yummy and the kid size is plenty! No seating area unfortunately. 3 sizes ranging from $5.75 - $8.50, toppings is 75 cents each and speciality toppings is $1.25 each. Tough to order just one flavor because there's a lot of variety in flavors such as Thai tea, black sesame, horchata, strawberry, cereal, etc, Order a Thai tea kids bowl with mochi ($6.75) and matcha kids bowl with mochi and sweet milk glaze ($7.50). The store makes to order pretty quickly, ice block goes through a shave ice machine to get a super powdery light fluffy texture. The store uses Strauss milk for creaminess, there are vegan options available too. Thai tea was tasty, the flavor was definitely there, not sweet at all. The condense milk made the matcha shaved ice pretty sweet, but it was still really good. Overall, such a speciality item in the city!

Try to follow me here: the texture of Powder's shaved snow is not as icy as shave ice from Hawaii; it's also not as creamy as traditional ice cream; it's velvety ribbons of its own unique thing, & I like it. Upon entering the postage stamp-sized shop, I perused the wall display of flavors & toppings for some time. It wasn't easy to pick. I finally settled on a small cup of Marshmallow Cereal; very reminiscent of the marshmallows in Lucky Charms or Rice Krispy Treats. In keeping with the cereal theme, I chose Fruity Pebbles & Sweet Milk Glaze as toppings, along with chewy mochi for added texture. Just different enough than other cold treats to grab my attention. Plus I love that the offerings lean heavy towards Asian flavors -- coming for that Black Sesame & Vietnamese Coffee on my next visit.

I got to KEN early for my reservation so I ended up grabbing dessert at Powder first since it's right next door I ordered a mexican chocolate shave ice with mochi, oreo crumble, and red bean (azuki) toppings, as well as a plain croffle on the side, which was fine but not standout (though I do think it's one of the better croffles that I've had!). I really enjoyed my shave ice, especially the azuki topping which went so well with the chocolate flavor and balanced out the sweetness of the shave ice. I would say that it's more of a normal chocolate flavor than a mexican chocolate, and it was a little more dense than I expected a shave ice to be, but overall I really liked it and would definitely come back!

This is a little tiny shop serving the most unusual shaved ice cream (?). There is a huge selection of flavors and we chose guava and Thai tea both with a sweet cream drizzle. I'm not sure how they make this stuff, but it's somewhere between shaved ice, cotton candy, and dipping dots. Flavors were delicious and the texture was so unique. Can't say much for the service, but our interaction was so quick. It didn't really matter. Would totally go back.

I've been wanting to try Powder for a long time, and it did not disappoint! I visited on a Friday night, and it was packed. Service was quick, and you could see the employees making your shaved ice right in front of you. I enjoyed the passionfruit snow with strawberries, mochi, and sweet milk glaze. It was a classic, delicious shaved ice. The menu is expansive, so I'm looking forward to trying other flavors and toppings. The space itself is quite small, and the customers were packed in like sardines. There is a fair amount of outdoor bench space. I felt bad for the workers - with the Friday rush, they seemed pretty overwhelmed.

There is no seating located in this particular cafe but plenty of outdoor seating directly outside. The general area can be pretty crowded due to the other store fronts within the mall so if you want a more relaxed matcha tea shop to do work or relax it would be better to order and then leave. Service: They have both a kiosk and a barista taking orders. Staff were friendly and working efficiently and quickly to fill the orders as they were being placed. Wait time: Generally depends on when you go since Japantown mall is a heavily toured area by locals and visitors to the Bay Area but I'd say roughly 10-15 minutes max from standing in line to receiving your drink. Food: The matcha ice cream has a deep matcha flavor with a nice concentration of powder which can be tasted in the soft serve. They also top the soft serve with a light dusting of matcha powder to further enhance the flavors. The cone was soft and light with a gentle sweetness that pairs really well against with the earthiness of the matcha.

Overall, I thought it was good. Not something that completely amazed me, but definitely worth trying if you already enjoy matcha desserts. The biggest strength here is definitely the matcha flavor itself. A lot of matcha desserts nowadays are overly sweet to the point where you can barely taste the tea anymore, but here you can still clearly taste the earthy matcha flavor with a slight bitterness that makes it feel more authentic. The sweetness level was balanced well, so it never became overwhelming or too heavy by the end. If you prefer Japanese-style matcha flavors that actually taste like tea instead of pure sugar, you'll probably appreciate this place more than many trendy dessert spots. I tried one of their matcha soft serve items, and the texture was smooth and creamy without feeling overly rich. The matcha flavor stayed noticeable from the first bite all the way to the end instead of fading away after a few spoonfuls. Everything paired together nicely, and overall it felt like a lighter, more refreshing dessert. Especially after eating ramen or heavier food nearby in Japantown, it was actually a pretty nice way to finish the meal. The shop itself is fairly small, but clean and simple, with the typical Japantown dessert shop atmosphere. It feels more like a quick stop for dessert while walking around rather than a café where you sit for hours, but it fits the neighborhood well. The location is also super convenient if you're already shopping or exploring Japantown. Overall, I'd say it's a solid and reliable matcha dessert place. The matcha flavor is definitely there, and the quality feels consistent, but it wasn't something so incredible that I'd make a special trip just for it. Still, if you already like matcha or happen to be in Japantown, I think it's definitely worth stopping by and trying once.
