I had a hankering because Jamie W. and I are planning a much-awaited trip to Honolulu. However, I was schooled quite nicely that this is Taiwanese-style shaved snow, a mix between shaved ice and ice cream. I didn't know anything about shaved snow, so I randomly picked from their wall menu. I went with a Filipino treat, the $6.50 Halo-Halo. The combination of the ice cream with the ice made it taste much lighter than it looked, and the coconut and red beans offered welcome texture. Big portions, fast service. Came here on a Thursday afternoon and there was only one couple ahead of us. There are a variety of flavors to choose from and each topping is $0.50. I do think that for what you get $0.50 is expensive since you don't even get one free topping of choice. We got the passion fruit and cereal milk with condensed milk. I think that while the cereal milk was tasty, we didn't like the passion fruit- it was super sour. I see a lot of reviews saying this is a unique dessert but to me, it just tasted similar to bingsu. I understand it's a small shop--the staff is there to just take our order and serve us--but but it definitely doesn't take much to be respectful. I came around 15 mins BEFORE closing and as my order was being taken, the lady with thick lashes left the stand and proceeded to payment before I was done ordering. Additionally, she basically threw my bowl on the counter and it almost tipped over. Honestly I wish it did so she would learn to be more patient and less aggressive . I have had other desserts that had earl grey in it, but this one is probably one of my favorites. Parking is kinda hard, street parking can be found a few blocks away, if you keep looking. After the Giant game, our family stopped by Powder -- our favorite soft serve place -- to enjoy the ice cream we love. We were there between 4:30 and 5:00 PM. The staff at Powder are usually so kind and friendly, but today was really disappointing. There was a female cashier sitting at the counter with extremely long false eyelashes, and she was taking payments. That part is whatever -- but when my daughter asked if they still had a flavor she used to love, the cashier gave us a nasty look, like we were weird for even asking. If they don't have the flavor, she could've just said so. But instead, she looked us up and down with those long lashes like we were something gross. On top of that, when we went to pay by card, the screen showed Japanese, and we asked if there was an English option. Her only response was that the message was just asking if we wanted to collect points. That's it. Please -- we truly love Powder, but please don't hire staff like her. I left feeling so upset and disgusted. It completely ruined our visit. Still, the ice cream was as delicious as always, so I'm giving 4 stars. read more
