"Tell me about it, spud." (Sandy, "Grease"/misquote.) Give me some skin if you've been to Amsterdam, where you've tasted the world's most delicious frites (looking at you, Mannekinpis!)! Wait a second...let's back that up! Amsterdam will have to work harder to keep up the distinction of producing the best fries, because Portugal's Potato Project is hot on its tail! Located along Rua da Conceição, Potato Project might be small potatoes in terms of the size of their shop, but their business is definitely not half baked. The finest potatoes are hand cut here daily and fried to the perfect crispiness. Whether you say frites or I say fries, these gourmet chips are sure to ap-peel to everyone! With several sizes and many toppings to choose from, along with authentic sauces from the Netherlands, there are endless combinations. Since the shop was open until 10pm and was located about a block away from our hotel, it was a perfect spot for late night snacks. The employee who took our order for both visits was super friendly, and quick to get to the root of the matter to correct my combo when she noticed it was made with the wrong sauce. We ordered The Amsterdam with curry sauce, cheddar, peanuts and onions; and The Guacamole with guac, cheddar, black beans, and tomato salsa. Both were hits and loaded with flavor, but I did wish the curry was more like a traditional curry, and less like a slightly vinegary, curryish condiment (but take that with a grain of salt since I'm not usually a fan of condiments in general.) There are only a handful of tables inside, but they conveniently have holes in them to hold your cone of frites. If you're ordering take-away, note that the area outside the shop is perfectly safe during the day, but can be a bit dodgy at night. Overall Potato Project is the perfect spot for a taterly delicious snack whether you're alone or with your spuddies-they're a smash!

Didn't think fries would be this good but a restaurant dedicated to fries had it down pat. Nicely designed space and excellent and quick service.

First time trying Potato project! I ordered their fries and was very satisfied! They had plenty of options. Napkins are readily available. Their tables have holes to park your fries. Check this place out!

I am such a potato eater and I love fries from Holland (patat met) so I knew I had to try this place out when we were in Lisbon. There are lots of topping options to choose from but I'm simple. I just wanted fries and truffle mayo. It did not disappoint. Fries are made fresh in delicious oil. It satisfied my cravings.

We liked the potato project! It was pretty simple fries with some customized options. It was pretty affordable and filling. Seating is limited but we liked the holes in the tables where you can stick your fries as a holder.

Are they the world's best fries?! No. But for 6€, my friend and I happily devoured these. Fun quick snack! They also have nice sit down area as well (if you're not in a rush)

While we were sitting, a male server hovered near us the entire time, cleaning the same small area of the table over and over, clearly eavesdropping. Staff is rude, unwelcoming, and invasive -- avoid this place. Plenty of much nicer places and more reasonably priced places to have a beer. Tourists beware -- rude staff, judgmental service, and overpriced drinks. Definitely not worth your time or money.

Quality is yeoman, not fancy and not blow your socks off "...this is so great I can't believe it". But satisfying and value priced. The staff are all friendly and helpful. Live music (Fado on Thursday, Friday, Saturday) performed most evenings in the upstairs dining room. Seats only 40 people so reservations are mandatory. Don't walk in and expect to be seated upstairs. The ambience is casual. The experience feels very family home made and satisfying. There are 6 other restaurants within 100 meters of this place. This one is my favorite because is feels the least touristy.

As I continue to slowly get through the large list of review drafts I wrote when I was in Portugal,…read moreat this point, a bit over 3 months ago, in no particular order... this was one of two places that ended up on my list of places I had to try a famous bifana sandwich when I was in Lisbon, the other being O Trevo the next day. To both of them equally I say, there are very few places I'd be willing to stand in line for an hour for, and few of them involve meat on bread. Luckily, being the off-season, I didn't have *any* wait to order a sandwich. Unluckily, being the off season, that's also because it kept raining off and on, and this is a strictly take-out affair. So I ended up eating the sandwich under a nearby awning. In nicer weather conditions, though, there are plenty of nearby benches to sit on right there. Would i wait in a long line? I would not. But it was a legitimately great sandwich, great fluffy bread, great cheese if you splurge on cheese (as of a couple months ago, they were 3.5 euro without cheese, 5.5 with cheese), and solid, juicy, meaty meat, even if I do *personally* prefer the thin-sliced version like the other place I went, did. For how filling they are, that'd make them pretty darn affordable, if you don't add cheese, which I would probably keep doing anyway if I lived here, I'd just go when it was the off-season and not busy, *and* not raining*. At least as of when I was there, being a takeout place, they didn't have much in the way of drinks, but there was an unrelated business in the next alcove over selling cheap large glasses of beer and large blended fruity pineapple drinks. p.s. Make sure to absolutely douse your sandwich in mustard and chili oil, if you like spicy food like I do. They're self-serve, and great.

Two years running this was our favorite bifana…read more Location was a bit challenging as only the door leading into the restaurant was for locals while the window on the other side served all others. The challenge was the limited sidewalk in front and the lines extend across the street. People don't always realize they're standing in the middle of a street until they get honked at by a car. Menu was posted on the left behind the window. Plain and with cheese bifanas topped the menu but there were other choices as well like carne asada, egg and fish. Cash was the only tender accepted. The pork in the bifanas was constantly simmered and pulled out to make each sandwich individually. The bread was chibatta like and quite soft that enveloped the strips of pork. I added piri piri aauce and yellow mustard (big squirt bottles available on the counters to each side of the window) which gave it more flavor. A simple but great local sandwich. To avoid lines come at odd hours. I also came a little after lunch hour in moderate rain and there was just one person ahead of me.
