Our inaugural meal on Day 1 (of 45 days) in Lisbon, we chose Ao 26 as our introduction to Portuguese vegan cooking. (We were excited from the reviews.) To start, it took us forever to find the restaurant because the address on Yelp! was an address long-ago moved from (now housed by another fancy restaurant). (We trekked up-and-down, back-and-forth, exhausted by the time we decided to call; whereby, we got the correct address.) The street entrance is relatively discreet, with a long stairway down to the restaurant. At the bottom of the staircase, you enter an open-aired, plant-filled courtyard, with a surprisingly modern restaurant with floor-to-ceiling glass walls. Quite beautiful and sophisticated; likewise is Ao's interior ambiance. Chic. Host and waitperson were friendly and welcoming (after some "Não falo português" pleasantries on our part), with just a whiff of anti-English snobbery. Nothing off-putting; but, I did sense it in the Host's greeting. Anyway, we settled-in with a start of a couple of beers the exhausting jaunt to find the place. (This is a 100% vegan restaurant, so I'll eschew with using "vegan," henceforth.) I started with an appetizer of "calamari" (battered mushrooms), served with an aioli. I really liked it. It looked small-ish, and was a bit on the cooler side temperature-wise, but was very filling. For my main, I went with the "octopus" (trumpet mushrooms), which came with a paella-like accompaniment. Both were really good; perhaps a bit one-note, but that's what I ordered -- I couldn't complain. (Jay's order was beautifully presented; and, although, he initially enjoyed the flavor, as the meal progressed, he said it was a bit too much "slimy" mushrooms. To me, it looked very "soft" in overall texture, with a lot of purée'd base. But that's for him to review....) ;) Overall, Ao 26 was a very nice introduction into Lisbon's vegan scene.... (And there've been many others following...!!!) :D

Across the bancoCTT, is where you will find this hidden gem.

This coming from a non-vegan who rarely frequents this kind of establishment. When you are with a crowd, you have to go with the flow. I know it's good for the environment, the animals which we hold dear to our hearts. But being raised a meat and potato kind of guy, it's hard to fall in love with vegan food or want to go back. Hidden Gem- Alas, the vegans one me over. There is this hidden gem called AO 26! I must say, ironically enough, it's really hidden, metaphorically and literally. If you place the address on Google maps. It will send you on a wild goose chase which is not there the restaurant is! I was lucky enough to do my research! Best is to Uber to Praça Luis de Camões. It's a town square , then proceed to find BancoCTT in the picture shown, across it are two large green doors and stairs that go down to this hidden garden! You do need reservations and they will turn you away! Our server Maria was a soft spoken but provided us with some amazing recommendations. The Portaguese starter board, delicious "meatballs", the Ceviche which was cool, fresh and divine. The Francesinha (which is a traditional heavy Portaguese dish) and the steak Seitan. The ceviche and meatballs were delish. The Francesinha is a bit on the heavier side, a mix of a lasagna type dish surrounded with strew. We were all surprised that it was delish. You have to try it in Portugal once. The steak seitan was a good impression of a steak but being meat and potatoes guy, it wasn't quite the same. To finish it off with the chocolate hazelnut mousse was absolutely rich and tasty. This was an amazing vegan restaurant and left such a great impression. Would I come back again? Possibly. The ceviche by far was my favorite and the chocolate mousse. The decor modern and nice, all the servers were attentive and polite.

The staff are so good! Friendly, happy, and make incredible food.

Vegans unite, we cannot tell the omnivores about this place! It is small and we don't want the meat eaters to over crowd it. TRY THE CUTTLEFISH!!! We took a vegan food tour in Lisbon and AO 26 was one of the stops. The food options are all vegan and spectacular. They do an awesome job of incorporating the various tastes of many regions in Portugal and making them available to the vegan lifestyle. TRY THE CUTTLEFISH! Make sure to save room for the crème brûlée! It is wonderful! We also enjoyed the Francesinha. It is served with potato chips that you dip in the tomato sauce, so good! TRY THE CUTTLEFISH! All I can say is that we have tried numerous things and they were all quite good! The staff is super helpful if you want help deciding. And also in letting you know how the locals enjoy the dish.

3.5* Food - 4 Service - 2 I had a late lunch here and was impressed by the selection of lunch options. We went with a sandwich and sweet potato fries. The fries weren't crispy like we were hoping for. The sandwich was fine, the bread was fresh and filling was tasty. Service was a bit scattered and not the friendliest. We were brought the wrong order and had to wait a while for our actual order. We noticed they messed up a few other people's orders as well, our neighbors received two desserts when they asked one to share.

This is exactly the spot we were looking for in Lisbon, a vegan restaurant with some local authentic cuisine. Everything was just amazing, from the environment to the staff and of course the food and drinks. Highly recommend if you are searching for a vegan place!

The whole place feels like a cozy cafe, with lovely staff. A lot of rustic and artistkc touches can be found here and there. Very big on the special scene in my opinion. The food? Fresh, absolutely tasty, and fully vegan! Reasonably priced too! Absolute gorgeous! I cannot recommend the place enough!

Our food was yummy and the waiter was very nice! I had the crispy tofu sandwich that has bbq sauce, vegan cheese, and two huge onion rings. I also had the sweet potato fries on the side. It was all delicious!

Food here is veryyy good! I would suggest skipping the appetizers and going for the main courses, the portion sizes are HUGE. We got the pumpkin pastry and vegan cheeseboard for apps (both were okay). For the mains I got the seitan steak in the lemon butter sauce, it was absolutely delicious! I recommend this restaurant as a great option for vegetarians and it is super cute inside with a great variety of options on the menu.

Honestly so Amazing! Prices are pretty average for vegan food and they have gluten free options!!

We ordered the: -Octopus Hot Dog (of course!) -Roasted Sardine Niguiri -Pan Sear Prawns and Garlic -Tuna tartare on toasted brioche with white chocolate and lime -Fried Seabass -Lobster Roll -Fried Scallops Overall everything was pretty good, but I wasn't in love with everything. The one stand out dish was definitely the Fried Seabass. It was really good! Sadly the Octopus Hot Dog was a bit underwhelming as I kept getting some hard pieces with every bite. The service was very friendly and quick. So although I most likely won't be coming back, I'm glad I tried Sea Me. Croacker Ceviche

There is one private booth table which we selected. It is a tapas style restaurant, so for two of us we ordered 6 dishes plus a dessert. The staff explains the menu and that a lower section shows larger dishes. We loved everything that we ordered but especially the lobster roll (their take don't expect a Maine style roll), sardine nigiri, garlic shrimp (the sauce was incredible and came with bread) and the dessert. The food came out very quickly but we were having dinner at 7pm. The total for two people was around 80 euro with the discount, but we did not get drinks other than still water.

We reserved a terrace table but were seated at the farthest corner instead. With plenty of open tables, the placement felt discriminatory and made us uncomfortable. Moving past that... Drinks: The Mount Fuji cocktail was delicious. Appetizers & entrees: We ordered a large variety for three people as we couldn't decide: Chamuca de Frango, Long Bao Pork, Bao Frango Bang Bang, Shrimp Tempura, Siew Mai Wonton, Salmon Hosomaki, Wonton Soup, Char Siu Pork Bao, Biryani, Peixe do Dia, and Jasmine Rice. Presentation was generally beautiful. On average the food rated 3-4 stars, though a couple of dishes were closer to 2 stars. The salmon hosomaki was flavorless and disappointing; the biryani was dry and lacked enough lamb when mixed; the baos were just okay. The shrimp tempura and the fish of the day were the standouts. Dessert: Baba Riniceronte, mango sticky rice, and Avela biscuit were all enjoyable, though the mango wasn't very sweet (possibly out of season). Service: Table service was ok but a bit inattentive. Staff only returned when bringing food and didn't check in much to see if we were enjoying our meal. Given we spent over 100 EUR pp, I expected more attentive service. This was an acceptable one-time experience, I've been to many mid-to-high-end Asian restaurants and this did not meet my expectations, I would not return.

The piri piri chicken was cooked perfect! The yogurt sauce, rice and onions all gave it a Mediterranean feel, and the bread/tortillas went great with it.
