A vegan, plant based buffet in Lisbon?! Now this is why Lisbon ranks so high in my top cities for vegans in the world. I visited Jardim das Cerejas on my final evening in town. I wasn't feeling super hungry so I opted to do a takeout box (€8) of their buffet food. The selection here was fantastic - many lentil/soy based protein options, a salad bar, rice and bread - really the perfect plant based meal where everything was tasty. My average rating really comes from my experience doing takeout. Maybe it's my American mentality, but when they handed me the takeout tray, I made sure to fill it up with as much food as possible (while not overloading). When I went to pay, the owner(?) scolded me and said it was now impossible to close and that I did not do this properly. I apologized and shared my embarrassment with them, but honestly - it was NOT that bad. I wasn't happy that they made a scene where everyone started staring as I continuously apologized and felt stern judgement. Finally, another staff member took over and closed the box for me and I paid and left. After sharing the photos with friends, nearly everyone concluded that it was not overfilled and definitely me just making the most of my limited space. A few days into our visit of Lisbon, after a few hours of sightseeing, hunger persuaded us to pop into Jardim das Cerejas for a vegan buffet. It's a popular and very straightforward buffet: A host greeted us and directed us to a table, took our drink orders, and directed us the serve-yourself buffet. There were a good dozen-plus items to choose from: appetizers, mains, desserts. One plate was plenty for me; everything I chose hit-the-spot. The price was very reasonable, especially considering that I could've had another plate full. (Jay had two plates, and he's VERY wary of Indian food since contracting an illness in Mumbai years ago.) I'm vegetarian but the person with me was not and both of us thought it was one of the best places we ate at in Portugal. This place offers a great deal on a healthy meal! I didn't really know what to expect. I'm not a vegan but I love eating healthy and eating vegan food. I was nearby and searching Yelp for a good place to eat. They open at 7:00pm for dinner. There is a large salad bar selection with lettuce, beets, carrots, onions, chickpeas, mushrooms etc. All very fresh. The hot selections are a variety of vegan dishes that change daily. There were a few rices, and 5 or 6 other hot dishes. The day I was there they had a veggie lasagna, cauliflower and broccoli in a coconut sauce, a bean dish, and a few other tasty things. They have a wide area of fresh veggies for salad making (arugula, chick peas, romaine, beets, carrots, etc.), and several warm Indian-inspired dishes. As someone who doesn't care for seafood and also enjoys veggies,eating out as a tourist in Lisbon proved challenging. I'm not a vegetarian at all but was drawn to this place after 3 days of basically eating salads and french fries as my only plant based source of nutrition. They had a choice of brown and turmeric basmati rice, two different kinds of sauced lentil dishes, a falafel covered in a white sauce dish, and a few other options as well as multiple cold veggies, cucumbers and the like. The lentil soup was so savory and earthy and well seasoned...nothing was overly spicy and I'm a spice wimp so this worked for me. Food is lukewarm, and tastes like it has been sitting there for a while, plus it's a very bland no spice Indian food. Having been living in the Bay Area, I know a lot of restaurants that offer vegan options and spice their foods with Indian flavors well. Here, it really missed it. There's no label containing allergens. If you ask them for info on ingredients because if allergy to hemp, nuts, soy or gluten, they have no clue. It's an easy place to get sick for the celiac people. 3 stars because the staff is friendly and there are plenty of options to choose, plus you can repeat. I'm visiting from San Francisco Bay Area, California, US. The vegan and vegetarian food there is fantastic, so my standards are high and my expectations probably unrealistic. Though a couple of items like the mini pizza and the mango cake were good, the rest was mediocre at best and even quite disgusting at worst. The seitan balls was especially unpleasant. But I needed the protein so I ate it, begrudgingly. Then again, the seitan, and other meatless products in Lisbon are just disgusting in general. If I hadn't been a vegan for a while and my first impression of what vegan food could taste like would in effect be ruined by the vegan food in Lisbon thus far. To sum up: This food is ok, editable and not very hot. The service is good and the staff very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere minimal. I'd pass on it if you're looking for a tasty vegan meal. The price is very good though. I paid €9 for the buffet plus dessert. So if you just need to eat anything and are on a budget, this place is a good option. Loved this place. We stopped by after having a long day in Sintra, Portugal. It was on our way home. I didn't know how common vegan restaurants in Lisbon was until I googled it online. Was hesitant to try this place but after 2 days of being sick I decided to come here for a "detox" meal. The salad bar was quite unimpressive, with 2 dressings on the side, one that's creamy and another that's olive oil-based (it also doesn't taste like extra virgin to me), and the chickpeas and mushrooms tasted like they were out of cans. They also had small bites of potato gratin bread, veggie pizza and some round fried dough. None of those tastes good so I suggest you pass on them. The hot food bar had 5 dishes - chickpea curry, tofu stew with veggies, lasagna, some veggie patty thing and another seitan dish. 4 out of 5 tasted amazing. The brown rice was also moist and well cooked. I tried their papadum which is wonderfully crisp and well spiced with cumin seeds. I then ordered their cake and thoroughly enjoyed it - the waiter described it as a cookie cake with chocolate but it was more like a mousse cake with a hint of coffee and coconut. This place is quick, cheap, and just the thing you're looking for in some situations. It's essentially an all-you-can-eat Indian buffet. The dishes are mixed in their flavor and spice; nothing I had was overly bland, but nothing blew me away, either. But if you're hungry, need to load up on food, or just want to get seated and eating quickly (e.g., on a busy travel day, or when traveling with a small child), it's hard to beat. The buffet is fairly broad (salad, appetizers, mains, soups, ...). Plus the price is extremely reasonable. I can imagine that if you go at the wrong time you're eating something that's been sitting atop a heater for a long time, and that can get pretty awful. I may have been fortunate to go when food was being freshly prepared and brought out. Still, this place doesn't pretend to be fancy or have airs about being vegetarian. It's solid and unpretentious. That can be a relief to a veg traveler in Europe. The location is also great (though you may need a bit of help taking the right exit out of the Baixa-Chiado metro): central, well-connected, and close to public transit, all good things for a visitor. In some other European cities, this would be a 5*. In Lisbon, which now has several veg options, I'm giving it a 4*. Still, there's nothing wrong with it at all.
