They give you a choice of dark meat or white meat and I chose the latter. The chicken was well cooked and mildly spiced, although the breast was slightly dry. As for the spice, for me it was fine, but I suspect it might be on the mild side for lovers of jerk spice. Not so with the bed of red beans and rice it was served on. This is an ample portion and was not only delicious but came with quite a spicy kick. Red beans and rice weren't the only side either, the cabbage the box lunch came with was tender and delicious. Wait is that white bread home made. Yes it is! You just don't see that in even some higher end places. This is a family owned place and I got a chance to talk with them a bit and what a bunch of really nice people. This place is currently nestled between the hotel villages to the West and Southlake mall on the East. There is more than one vacant business or building and the lack of maintenance on the surrounding grounds made me wonder if the restaurant was open for business. I am glad it was. They certainly make up on the inside for what is lacking outside. The interior has ample dining space, is cheerfully decorated in an island theme and they have reggae playing softly in the background. The owners mentioned they are looking at a more welcoming location close by. But if you are looking for an inexpensive but delicious box lunch give this place a try. How was it? Fries- Delicious! Fresh cut fries, made right in front of you. They were great! Huge portion, too! Merkts Cheddar Sauce- Hell yeah! Give me a gallon of this, and I will chug it! Such a tasty cheese sauce. Loved dipping my fries in it. Great combo! Char Dog- This dog was delicious! Great char, great toppings. My only beef would be the bun. It definitely could have been more soft/steamed and fresh. It held up pretty well, but there were a couple bites where it broke and flaked apart. Hate when that happens. Still...didn't ruin the overall experience. Had a great last meal in Chicago before I headed to the airport.

We were already in the area to check out Frank Lloyd Wright's studio and then came here for lunch afterwards. We were lucky that it was a Monday at lunch time and not a more traditional peak time to be there because we got a parking space fairly quickly and even though we saw the line out the door, it moved very fast. It's very much a cash-only and no-frills type of place. Don't come here expecting them to be super friendly to you. You go up there knowing what you want to order and they are quick and on it. When you're paying, they're already getting the other customer's (behind you) order. We went for an Italian beef sandwich to split as well as a side of fries and an Italian ice. Everything was excellent. Definitely the best Italian beef I've ever had and one of my friends said it was one of the best foods he had on his week trip here. Will definitely need to return!

Note: this was my second visit as my first attempt, on Father's Day 2025, was a magnificent bust. We had no line and plenty of seating this time! They have a big menu, but save the cute stuff for a follow-up visit and get a beef (& hot dog is really hungry). Do yourself a favor and get an Italian Ice too, time of year is irrelevant. You can thank me after your tastebuds recover from being overwhelmed. Is the food THAT much better than other spots, you ask? Not handedly, no. But the whole experience, especially if you wait in line (in the sun as there is zero shade), is what makes this place great. It really is a delightful Chicago experience.
