Went on a Saturday around 3pm. The restaurant is located in a strip mall with plenty of parking. We were and seated immediately. The restaurant is contemporary, but nothing extra special. Loved the food - but didn't like that even when you dine in, all the food still comes out in containers. The server was kind and attentive. Let's start with the atmosphere and the servers were nice. The food was nothing to brag about for a soul food restaurant. The catfish had NO seasoning. The dressing was good but with the gravy, Mac n cheese ok, and the greens and cabbage were the best. The deal breaker for me was the fact that you are eating your food on to go containers, drinking from plastic cups and plastic utensils. I called in an order. It was ready fast. My order had the smothered chicken wings which was very good. The gravy was well seasoned. The mac and cheese was better than normal restaurant but could be creamier. Greens were very good although it was full leaf which is a personal preference. I prefer bite size especially when on the go. My husband just wanted a 'snack' so he got a catfish filet and candied yams. He liked the fry and seasoning on the catfish and i liked the yams more than he did. But he didn't give them up completely. Having recently moved into the area, I was curious as to restaurants that I could patron. Creed-Flossmoor is one that isn't far from me, so I went for takeaway. The fried catfish hit the spot, although the filets were thin. I have come to realize that up North, thick filets have a muddy flavor, so thin worked fine. The sweet potatoes, black-eyed peas, and cabbage were perfect side dishes. And nothing says, "Y'all did good," like hot water cornbread. It's a spacious restaurant, but it's not a large one. Terrible setup! Server brought us plastic utensils in plastic wrap, and the order menu was small and hard to read. It looked like a flyer that you would put on a car's windshield. We couldn't understand it because it said Entree + 2 or 3 sides, but didn't say what the Entrees were. So I asked a gentleman who was hanging out, and I believe was the owner to show me the Entree choices. He said "it should be on there," then looked at it for a few minutes then said "see, it's right there." Referring to the A La Carte area showing only 3 types of meat choices. The gentleman then said "we have meatloaf on Wednesdays," WE WERE THERE SUNDAY! We decided to leave and while doing so, the gentleman asked what was wrong. I informed him that I didn't eat pork chops nor catfish (2 of the 3 choices), and he stated "well, we have chicken wings...but you probably eat wings all the time." We both laughed as I said "exactly." In addition to all that, we noticed that customers were seated at their tables eating from plastic Carryout (To-Go) containers not plates. It was also kinda hard locating the place because the outside looks like a used furniture store in a strip mall. This place has been open since June 2024, and I wish them well, but it needs a lot of work. You could tell that the gravy came out of either a jar or a packet.It was not homemade soul food gravy i would not recommend to go there if you don't like bland extra thick gravy on your food the next time. I had the absolute worst experience at this restaurant during my first visit to Chicago. If I can give it a 0 I would. I was excited to try some soul food, but this place was a disaster from start to finish. The dressing was a mushy mess with no celery, green peppers, or onions, and it had zero flavor. The mac and cheese was dry as dirt--no creaminess, no taste. To make things worse, I found a dead fly at the bottom of my red wine glass. It wasn't floating, so it had clearly been there for a while. Disgusting. Even though we were dining in, the food was served in to-go containers, which was strange and unprofessional. I went in on today to try to grab a bite to eat with family after making a reservation. First, the table was missing two chairs. No one came over to assist so my husband grabbed two additional chairs. As we sat there waiting, not only did no one acknowledge us, but the waitress took care of two people that came in after us. Then when I asked her could we be served, she told me in a nasty voice that there were only two waitresses. She then rolled her eyes and walked away.
