My first time in the restaurant I was very excited to show my mom vegan options around her neighborhood. However, we waited over an hour for a soul food bowl. I was told it would take 10 mins. Instead I watched several other people receive their food within 10-15 mins including someone who had also ordered a soul food bowl after me. The Spice Queen caught my eye from a distance, and I'm so glad it did! My sister and I stopped in and were pleasantly surprised by the interior. It was welcoming, colorful and trendy with vibrant colors, TVs and good music. The menu boasts of vegan and non-vegan soul food that makes you crave a good Sunday dinner. My sister had the catfish with rice & gravy and candied yams while I had the vegan dinner special (4 sides & bread): vegan collard greens, red beans & rice, smothered cabbage and fried green tomatoes. Each came with a ramekin of hot sauce. We were able to enter our order into a kiosk and the wait wasn't long. The food was served with a smile! I really didn't want to be mean or bring the food back and tell her how disappointed I was, but after spending $50, I have to be honest about my experience. The yams were dry, the macaroni and cheese was bland, and I did not specifically ask for mild sauce on my fish but still received mild sauce. The greens and cornbread were honestly the only things I felt were worth eating. The dressing tasted like nothing but poultry seasoning, and the soul food egg roll was overcooked. I really wanted to support the business, but for $50, I expected much better quality and flavor. I didn't want to be rude or complain at the time, but who is going to give me my money back now? Having passed by this restaurant a few times, I was interested in what was on their menu. Vegan food at restaurants is usually bland, so my visit was a gamble. I opted for their vegan sampler, which comes as four of their vegan sides. I ordered collards, red beans and rice, sweet potato fries, and fried okra. I give them high marks for all of the sides I had. The restaurant is small on the inside. You order at the plexiglass and receive your food through a protective cabinet. I have no other choice but to be honest. I'm looking for consistency. There is no consistency. I was looking for the same taste that I experienced when I went there the first two times. I got the vegan soul food bowl $30 and then the vegan bites $20. The vegan mac and cheese with the bowl tasted like it was from a package. So I agree with the reviewer Joyce P. But, the bowl was big and I got two meals from it. After that it was downhill. I kept giving this restaurant chance after chance. I think I spent almost $30 every time I went there. For me, that is way too expensive to end up disappointed every time. The first and second time I had the vegan bites they were very good. The second time the bites tasted like the mushrooms weren't cleaned. I kept getting a crunchy taste like dirt was fried with them. I also ordered the vegan rib tips meal and it was the biggest disappointment out of them all. Need to be taken off the menu. The catfish sandwich was very good with the Henne sauce. Ordered the salmon croquettes over rice with fried green tomatoes and beans/rice. Soulrolls And peach Cobbler The main reason for the 2 stars -- the rice was gummy and not edible. Tomatoes were greasy/soggy. Cobbler was not edible. Over cooked maybe but gummy. I did leave a tip and I'm rooting for the business to make improvements in the meal prep. read more

Spice Queen is a newly opened concept in the South Loop! Their food is delicious. My husband and I ordered for delivery and it arrived quickly. We got the fried chicken dinner and jerk chicken dinner and they were both so juicy and tender. For our sides we got a bunch and split them. We tried the Mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and yams. The portions were huge and we got our food quickly. I can't wait to try more menu items next time. read more

I visited this spot in Hazel Crest and was immediately impressed by the atmosphere. The decor is not the usual fast food env ironment. I was greeted with plush red curtains and chairs that gave more of a comfortable, upscale yet casual feel. Nice music played softly over speakers, and floral decor throughout. I was cheerfully welcomed by a lovely woman (I think she was the owner) who smiled and told me a little of what they offered. All of that experience was great and appreciated, but of course we visit restaurants for the food. Spice Queen did not dissapoint! The food was quite flavorful and fresh! I had the smothered pork chops or should I say smothered pork bones with rice and no gravy (was supposed to have gravy) and cabbage. The chops were over seasoned and will probably raise my blood pressure! The cabbage was not good. I also had the banana pudding and vanilla wafer pudding .... Not good at all. No bananas at all. Went to Spice Queen today with my friend and wow! The food smelled delicious instantly as I walked in and the menu had so many different options. Margie the owner was so kind and bubbly and their mashed potatoes and jerk chicken was the best I've ever had! My boyfriend got the 2 piece dark, yams, rice and brown gravy and loved it! We shared the banana pudding and homemade carmel cake for desert and my only regret is not ordering more! read more

I was excited to try this Establishment. . . I ordered over Uber a little after 7 pm all I ordered was (2) 2 pice catfish with fries and a side of Greens. I just cancelled my order after more than a hour and two drivers were there to pick up my food and still was waiting in the cold. I attempted to call the restaurant 4 times and kept getting a google voice message. I never write reviews I try to give people the benefit of the doubt but this is ridiculous.
