We could be more satisfied with our experience at the Old World Market! The staff is very informative and the food is amazing! Our Charcuterie box was the biggest hit at the party!!

I have wanted to go in here for YEARS and somehow never have managed to until recently. They have everything imaginable in here that you could pair with wine, so if you're looking for some unique gifts for friends or family, this is the place to stop in at. They also sell adorable cat shaped bottles of wine for each holiday, and now need to become a holiday staple at my parents house. I'm going to be stopping in again soon for some cheese.

WOW! Such amazing goods in this small charcuterie box that I served at a training I hosted! The cutest little shop too!

I love this place, it rocks!! It's great to have a place like this out here because it's like what downtown Chicago has all over. They have nice selections of cheeses, meats and wines and there's always something new to try out. It's located on the square too, so it's a great way to spend the afternoon walking around and then stopping in here.

HA! I visited Valparaiso with the idea that it had nothing good to offer... Well was I wrong! Valpo has the Old World Market & Delicatessen so take that! Step in to a 'French market' with checkered floor and white tin ceiling to find sweets, baking and spice items, sauces and condiments, pasta and sauces, oils and vinegars and beer/ale [and wine] that make up their large variety of products. Plus they're a delicatessen so they have great cheeses and meats. I'm becoming a wine-o so I went straight to the back of the store to the wine selection. My good friend Yelper Nicole V. would be happy because they have her favorite white wine Gazela Vinho Verde. It's part of their shelf of $15 and under wines. I had to buy myself the Black Cat German Riesling which comes in an adorable wine bottle that is, you got it, a black cat. There are great options for those who go Gluten free. The organic falafel chips are one tasty recommendation. The store gets shipment in of fresh breads from Boudin that arrive half baked and are finished off in store's oven. Nothing but doughy goodness! If you live in the area, join their e-mailing list to find out about monthly wine tastings and events.

Full disclosure: I know next to nothing about farming co-ops or community-supported agriculture. It…read morewas only recently that we made our first foray into the world of CSA. So, take all of this with a grain of salt since I'm a total noob at this. Through Creme de la Crop though, I experienced my initiation. The way that it works is at the beginning of the season (in our case late spring) you enroll into the share program signing up for either a Standard Market - selection of basic farm produce - or "Epicurean" - larger amounts of every fruit and vegetable they grow. Paying a flat fee (2014 Standard full $720/half $360) you then weekly receive their finest summer produce for 18 weeks. Simply pick up your weekly take of assorted veggies at one of the designated locations. Easy peasy. The upside: The quality of the produce was crazy good. This wasn't your standard supermarket fare--not by a long shot. Everything we received over the 18 weeks was organic, grown on their farm, and from taste, touch, sight, and smell absolutely phenomenal. Green beans, peppers, lettuce, carrots, eggplant, cucumbers as well as various herbs...and much more. We were rarely disappointed with what we got. The people and actual farm were also part of the experience. Most of their produce is grown right there along US 30 just west of town. The actual farm leaves little to be desired. It's basically a collection of rundown old buildings and a few muddy fields. But, the staff and volunteers running it are amazing. They manage to create a unique atmosphere of education and community that really draws you in. They are helpful, friendly, and passionate about their work. The downside: As much as it pains me to say it, it just isn't practical or economical. First off, what produce you get any given week depends entirely on what they are harvesting. One week you get crap load of beets and then next you're swimming in beans. If there are veggies you eat regularly, you'll probably find yourself looking elsewhere many weeks. You also frequently are trying to figure out creative ways to use up the unique produce you end up with. Edemame, chard, kale are interesting, just not the most useful. Second, it's expensive. Some may argue that the quality as well as the environmental sustainability are worth the extra cost, but it was hard for me to swallow. There are other ways to procure organic produce without overly burdening the budget. Finally, there's also the convenience factor to consider. Creme de la Crop does a lot to make it easy to get your hands on your weekly allotment with multiple pick-up locations around Valpo. But, you still work around their schedule and accessibility. In the end it's worth it if you're really committed to CSA. Having principles costs money. If you're willing to pay the cost, a CSA is an excellent way to get great fruits and vegetables and support environmentally sustainable agriculture. If not, find yourself a Whole Foods somewhere.

That's just a game they play with us. That makes people think their overall prices are good. They'll run a few good deals to get you into the store and then they hose you on the rest of the items. Remember, you have to bag your own groceries too. They have little price signs everywhere, "supposedly" showing the regular price, versus the "new" price. Are you kidding me? Did you ever look at those tags? Then they show "their" price on the tag. They have raised prices dramatically, since the new company took over. They're making a complete fool of you, if you think they haven't raised them. They're fooling you BIG TIME. Here's a perfect example. They hung a sign from the ceiling in the meat department that said: "Lower prices on thousands of items. Ground beef $7.18 for a pound.....a POUND! Does that sound like a "low" price to you? Plus, it comes in a tube. You have no idea what you're getting, because you can't see the meat. Here's another one. Chuck roast for $9.98 a pound. Does sound like a "bargain" to you? I could go on and on, how they're playing games with us customers. But you're getting railroaded folks. They put in a new floor, dressed some things up and shoppers think they're getting a great deal. Some of you really need to wake up. But that's ok, keep shopping there and fritter your money away. It's only "money," right? SMH.

First of all, everything sold here is organic and the majority of the items are products from their farm. The two women working at the store were extremely nice and informative as they led me through the store. The store is small and nicely organized. I purchased a cross section of items to so that I could build a solid opinion of them overall. Usually most places have some items that are hits and others that just simply are not. Well, I am glad to report everything that I purchased was outstanding! The next day at home, I fired up the grill and threw on their products for a taste test. The Norwegian salmon was much better than what I purchase at Wholefoods, Marianos, or Costco. The grass fed beef chuck eye steaks (this is a very underrated cut of steak) was simply full of delicious flavor and tender. Also, the in house made fresh Polish sausage was as good as some of the best Polish owned places back in Chicago, which says a lot. Correction, the sausage was leaner and full of flavor which interprets into healthier without sacrificing flavor. The one item that I did not get to taste that I purchased was the whole chicken which I can not wait to try. I am waiting for the cooler autumn weather to set in before I start roasting meat again. I highly recommend this place. If you care about where your meats or produce come from then this is your place. If you care about the effects of long term use of chemicals on farmlands have, then, this is your place. Is the meat your eating humanely raised? I have family out in California and out there places like this are common. But, here in the Midwest, I am sad to say, they are rare. I can't believe it took me this long to find this place. That said, without a doubt, I will become a regular here!

They also have pre-prepared offerings from their restaurant and wine too. They make prepackaged lunches daily with different gourmet sandwiches on fantastic breads with their boars head meats. In the boxed lunches is a sandwich (I've had a few of their offerings so far - Pastrami with red onions, Honey turkey with apples and pear vinaigrette), a small portion of pasta salad, and a desert. The sandwiches are great, the pasta salad is fresh and delicious, and the deserts are excellent. I came here for the grand opening after I had their lunches and got to sample a lot of their different offerings and wine.
