I've been here three times now and have gotten the same thing every time, so if you're looking for a pretty sweet stack of massive chocolate chip pancakes drizzled with chocolate syrup and powdered sugar, I'd definitely recommend trying this place out. I sat down and ordered a drink and a minute later she comes back with it and asks if I am ready to order. That is good service. The food looked delicious and the French toast was a mix of fluffy and sweet. The pancakes tasted as a pancake should and the eggs were fluffy as well. So happy that the Harbour Cafe was closed (when it was supposed to be open!). This is a diner. That's it. Two eggs over easy, homefries, toast & coffee. Perfectly cooked, served quickly by a friendly waitress, a few bucks and tip and I'm out the door. I was reading the not so good reviews of this diner from you yelpers out there and needed to find out for myself. How bad can it be? We'll see.It's Sunday morning and for me that means diner discovery day.The sun is up and I'm on the road .Destination, Portside Diner.The Road King is humming a sweet song and my stomach is a growling.I hope this trip is worth it.It was an easy find and I'm at the counter in about 45min. Looking around,the diner is pleasing to the eye and is in great shape.With a hot cup of caffeine in front of me,I chose a mushroom and cheese omelet with a side of kielbasa,wheat toast and some homefries.While waiting for my meal,the waitress and I had a nice chat.Super friendly and talkative,she did a great job of keeping the coffee cup full.My omelet arrived and I proceeded to devour it.Fluffy and tasty,cooked to perfection.Yum.A little more chat,a little more coffee and I'm good to go.The trip here was definitely worth it and I'd recommend this place to others. read more

Too bad. Had breakfast 5 days and for 5 days I requested WELL DONE homefries. Cook could care less. Got them raw 5 times. Will NOT be back. Left $2.00 tip for a $6.00 meal. Didn't help. Still got raw homefries. I'm glad business is so good that they can blow out customers by not giving a crap. Never any cars in their lot. read more

I have been a few times and will admit the service is less than stellar. The last time I went there was with the girlfriend and our waiter made it pretty clear he hated his life and did not wan't to wait on us at all. I personally didn't really care because I was ravenous, and to tell you the truth, the less personable a waiter is, the better. I don't want to be your friend, i just wan't to eat! On that note, the food is actually really good. I don't know what is but the scrambled eggs are quite tasty. I get the same thing no matter what diner I'm at- 2 eggs scrambled, white toast, homefries and bacon. This may seem impossible to screw up, but it is- believe me (see: City Side Diner in Beverly) Anyway, I like old-school dingy diners so I am fan of Portside. read more

Something is said for these quaint little diner cars with their nostalgic look and history... But not this one. Old run down and pretty dirty. If you are going to have an open kitchen, then make it presentable. Maybe put some money into the business and its appearance, maybe a little pride in ownership? The food was mediocre at best, I'd bet the hash came out of a can, it was terrible. My waitress was nice and quick to fill my sample-sized coffee without fail. If you love diner breakfast, stay away you'll be disappointed. read more

The food was pretty good. The two dishes we ordered (both breakfast) tasted fresh and had good flavors. The diner itself was a bit dirty. Caked dust on the fans and window blinds, and sticky chairs made the experience less enjoyable. The waitress was very sweet and nice. read more

Very disappointing. I ordered coffee, an egg and cheese sandwich on a grilled English muffin which comes with home fries, and a side of corned beef hash burnt. The coffee was ok until the mouthful of grounds at the bottom of the cup. The sandwich came out with bacon on it. Normally no big deal picking it off, but it took all the cheese with it. The home fries were cold, not like lukewarm, but really cold. The corned beef hash that I ordered burnt had no attempt made on it to cook it even a little longer than normal, just a plate full of mush. The owner(?) offered to make a new sandwich, so that was good, but I really thought it would have been easier to pull the bacon off. The waitress was pleasant enough but ignored the fact that I said the plateful of food she disposed of was awful. Oh well. I won't be back..... read more

This was a pretty average diner. Everyone seems to be knocking the breakfast, but their dinner specials were pretty good. I got the meatloaf, which is a diner classic, and they did it pretty well. It was pretty much empty except for us, and the family of the owner. It was kinda strange. Think I may have been joining a family dinner. read more

Well today we decided to try the Portside Diner which we both have driven by countless times but never stopped. As a relic of the old diners it is superb but as a breakfast destination it left much to be desired. The diner atmosphere is great and all looks to be clean and well preserved for its age. Service was adequate but not overly friendly (and during our early morning visit not busy). In fact when we left at 8 AM the place was empty. Coffee too strong for our liking and were not offered 2nd cup. Eggs over easy done to perfection but thats it....bacon way overcooked, home fries tasteless and on the mushy side. Very inexpensive so if its a bargain you want GO..if great food you want..think twice. The Breakfast Guys. read more

Grandma and I go to PD every once in a while for breakfast. We always get a very well prepared and tasty breakfast. Grandma said her eggs were done perfectly. I especially like the Greek sausages which I don't typically order anywhere else. After breakfast we usually look at each other and wonder we don't go to PD more often. They also have an interesting lunch and dinner menu but we only go for breakfast. The service is very attentive and fairly fast. Coffee is frequently topped off. I do recommend PD for breakfast. read more

I have to say that I never post anything on Yelp or any site, but I happened to read some of these reviews and wanted to post something myself. I have been a customer of Portside Diner for a few years and have NEVER had a problem. The food is excellent and always fresh! I have probably tried everything on the menu, and for one thing, every single egg plate comes with homefries, even the hash and eggs. The Portside French Toast is to die for (French Toast topped with fruit and a scratch made vanilla cream sauce-I have yet to get them to give me the recipe!, that just pairs perfectly) Eggs Benedict....the best I have tried and different kinds but the Irish/Florentine mix is a must try! If you like lunch, the Meatloaf is delish (also made from scratch), turkey club-fresh hand carved turkey, and chicken finger plate(chicken fingers are fresh and served with mash and vege and gravy!), are some of my faves. I mean the burgers are good too just because they are fresh and not frozen. The diner is clean -I was there the other day and witnessed them climbing up the walls in the kitchen to scrub down the walls, and I have never seen ants...but then again 2 ants I don't find unusual seeing I have seen them from time to time in my house for that matter. Definitely not an indicator of anything else for sure! The coffee cups are small but waitresses always coming around for refills so I can't knock them for that. This is a local family run business that I support 100% and I have gotten to know the owner-hard working and wants to please so definitely try them out. read more

Well, my son and I had tickets to the Red Sox, but we were unable to cheer for our favorite team as the city was shut down due to the tragic bombings. The governor lifted the ban and encouraged folks to go about their business yet remain alert. I headed north a couple of miles to look for a small ball field to hit a few fly balls to my son. In Danversport we spotted a ball field across the water way. While adventuring around the small "port" we spotted the Portside Diner- which was painted Cape Ann on the outside. After 45 minutes playing in the park (which was also a great little find) we headed straight for the diner. Just as we pulled up the radio announced the bomb suspect #2 was found in a boat! We walked in and noticed there was no TV mounted on the wall (which would have seemed out of place in an old diner anyway). There were three tables occupied in this great little historical gem. I informed these patrons, "They just announced the police have the suspect." Everyone including the the owners- the father the cook and the son the waiter- cheered! This was a great moment. My son loves seafood and ordered the scallops while I felt like having breakfast for supper and ordered French toast with ham. The coffee was great and never went below half. The French toast and ham was perfect- not over done or too "eggy". The ham was hot and had great flavor. My 12-year-old son's fried scallops were extremely flavorful and cooked to perfection. He only shared one scallop and no more. The fries were great too. My son normally leaves the coleslaw for me to try as he almost never likes it no matter where we go. I did my best to pretend his coleslaw was no good, but he read the expression on my face and quickly took back the little bowl of slaw and refused to share any more of it. He is a great kid, but he knows great food when he tastes it. I enjoy finding historic diners and everyone's spirit was certainly lifted with the latest news bulletin, but good food and good service appeared to be the norm for this local eatery. I am surprised to read a few negative comments about this place. Even though we live almost 8 hours away, my son and I will surely be back, and we strongly encourage everyone to give the Portside Diner a try. Thanks for the great service. read more
