There's some kind of magic in the eggs Benedict that makes me cry for joy when I eat them.

When you walk in, the place is beautiful- sort of modern rustic chic with beautiful string lights. We ordered mussels and wine to start. Mussels were fantastic. Meaty, flavorful and plenty for everyone. The entree is where it fell short for me. I got the shrimp pasta. While the flavor was there, when I cut into the shrimp they still looked pretty translucent to me. After eating one and cutting up a few others, I felt that they were undercooked. The waitress said they wouldn't cook them more but she could bring the plate back and ask if they were cooked through. My plate came back and I was told they were cook so I sat there pushing soft, nasty shrimp around my plate while just eating spaghetti. My boyfriend asked for a medium burger and it was definitely rare to medium rare. When this happens, generally you offer to bring out new protein cooked again or ask if the guest wants something else but I was just left to feel like I was nuts. Whatever, into dessert. Now for dessert, I thought we'd try the cookies and ice cream. cookies were completely raw ( not just soft) and also not hot and the ice cream on the plate looked like it was pre scooped and refrozen. While I loved the concept of this place. Relaxing getaway where you can just do it all onsite, I honestly would spare yourselves the experience of the restaurant or order fish and chips or fried chicken) and just dine in Newburyport.

What a disappointment this was. My husband and I were looking to try a new place for lunch and…read morehoped it would be good. No such luck. Although it wasn't busy, we waited quite a while even for beverages. When the waitress eventually took our orders, I asked for a cheese burger club sandwich, medium rare, add onions. My husband got a chicken parm sub. When we finally got our lunches, she served mine with no French fries, which I eventually received a few moments later. The burger on my club sandwich was so overcooked it was like a piece of shoe leather. There were no onions, and the minuscule piece of cheese didn't look or taste like cheese, but reminded me of a piece of curled up parchment paper. My husband's sub was fair but she forgot to bring him the glass of water he'd asked for and he had to keep asking for refills of his iced tea. Overall a dreadful experience when we had been looking forward to a tasty, quick meal. The first time we've ever been there, and also our last.

Sunday morning breakfast - 2 open 4-tops plus counter seats along the windows and two people…read morewaiting the tables efficiently and with friendly greetings. We both ordered the Brazilian cheese bread sandwich, not because of the GF, but because we loved the little cheese bread balls that we had while visiting friends in Brazil. I ordered with the hash browns, which turned out to be REAL potato made here, not a Mc-patty pulled from the freezer. Great seasoning and perfectly cooked. The sandwich had a little spinach, well cooked egg (not too runny, but maybe a hint more than needed), and smoky bacon on a split cheese bread "roll." It was super hot when served; I finished almost all of my potato before I could eat it - no complaints on temperature. The flavor was really good - and unique. My only concerns were that the bacon was "tough" so that a bite tended to pull out the whole strip. It wasn't bad, but maybe a crispy bacon would bite more cleanly. The other issue, and really the only significant one, was the density of the cheese bread. I expected something similar to the cheese bread balls, which have a texture similar to a good Italian bread (not the squishy supermarket kind). This was almost solid. We've made the cheese bread balls at home, with good success, so I'll try the different shape - maybe for burgers! - and see if it's a challenge. I'll come back to explain if the experiment to make fluffier buns is not successful. Meanwhile, the place filled up and some of the other menu items looked really good. We're very likely to go back for a lunch.

Ordered a fiddlehead double IPA with 8.2 abv Smoked bbq chicken wings 2 meat combo of ribs, brisket, Mac and cheese, bbq beans Well, smoked wings were outstanding and some best I've had .... Just right amount of smoke flavor. Brisket was a huge wow... tender, moist and some of best brisket I've had at many bbq spots throughout USA. Ribs had a nice smoke ring, a bit salty for my tastes, but still an excellent cook on the ribs Mac and cheese was great, I wanted a multi cheese taste... add a parm cheese to it... still excellent cook on the Mac and cheese Beans very good, I like a bit more molasses, with few chunks briskets ... excellent however Corn bread on dry side...needs improvement Only one option for bbq ... I wanted a peach flavor for my brisket, but all good Excellent bbq with outstanding wings . I'll return .

The ribs…read morewere fall-off-the-bone perfection, with so much meat packed onto each one--seriously generous and smoky delicious. The pork belly sandwich special was an unforgettable mouthful: juicy, cheesy, and perfectly stacked on toasted rye that added the ideal crunch. We were shocked (in the best way) by the salad portions--massive! Easily enough to feed a family of four, and fresh as can be. The cornbread? Soft, sweet, and heavenly with the honey butter. We did think a little toast would've helped that butter melt just right--but still a must-order. The house pickles were crisp with the most satisfying snap and bold flavor. We also tried the hush puppies with their unique dipping sauce--super creative, though not totally our vibe. Limited seating means you might wait, but trust us--it's absolutely worth it. Booth or table seating. The Rusty Can is a flavor-packed experience from start to finish.

The menu is huge so you have to try things and find what you like. Some things, like in every restaurant, can be skipped. In my review, I'd like to highlight the turkey dinner. It's one of the best. Traditional, bountiful, and delicious. You won't regret it. I've tried many others in the area and they don't deliver. The place is historic, simple, and busting. The background music is right up my 60 year old alley... I love it. Cathy and Ed just can't be beat. They make everybody feel cared for and important, something hard to find these days. There are people who've been coming to this place their whole lives. It's crazy and I love it. So... Don't grouse, try something different and fall in love with the VPH. You'll be back!

Everything else was good. Tip: they are cash only, so remember to have cash on hand if you're planning to stop by.
