It was strange, not very busy when I went in, I parked in the front next to a handicap spot. A nice, family owned establishment near Surfside. We came for breakfast after a weekend enjoying the Surfside beaches and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food. Breakfast was pretty tasty. Bacon was perfectly cooked - although quite salty. Waffles were delicious. I asked for fruit on the side because I don't like soggy waffles. If you don't like whipped cream or strawberry drizzle - be sure to request those to be removed as well. A little concerned about the salad dressings being left out on top of the salad bar. Wow! I would have driven right on by this place if it hadn't been for Yelp. We were staying on the beach actually but wanted to have a nice family brunch and Port Cafe did not disappoint. Read the reviews and decided to check it out. Arrived around lunchtime and the place had a steady stream of local workers. Felt a little out of place as tourists, but figured it was a good sign that this place is obviously a "regular" for the locals. My husband and I got the buffet. It's pretty much 1/2 southern and 1/2 Mexican. Not bad for $9.99. Today's main southern dish was chicken fried steak. They also had ribs several sides and a small salad bar. Poblano chicken and cheese enchiladas on the Mexican side. I only wish they'd have refilled the cornbread. It is was empty when we got there and never refilled. My daughter enjoyed her hamburger and homemade fries. It looked good! The fries were HUGE. Other two kiddos got breakfast and the only complaint was that the waffles/French toast had blackberries and strawberries listed but only came out with strawberries. I think we caught them on a rough day. Food: over cooked with no flavor, but the portions were generous and the coffee was the best in town. Staff: very friendly and helpful. 'Kept our coffee topped off-very important' Overall the place is clean and well kept, however, we were there for the food and did disappoint. My chorizo (probably reheated from the day before)was way over cooked along with my eggs. We chose breakfast based off of Yelp reviews. While only 3 reviews, I trusted the 5-stars over other more-reviewed locations with a lower rating. This is a cute, quite little place. The elders outside chatting/smoking were very hospitable and offered a head nod and a "Good morning" & "Goodbye" on the way out. The server was very prompt and nice. The food was excellent. My son was very intrigued by the Mason jar cups. The cashier that checked us out genuinely asked if we enjoyed it, and asked if it was our first time. This is our favorite place for Sunday breakfast. You have the choice to either sit inside, where the decor is not much, but we come for the breakfast anyway, or enjoy some fresh air outside. There is plenty to choose from the menu with all time favorites like french toast, waffles or pancakes, but also lots of Mexican inspired choices if you prefer a savory breakfast. I am telling you some of the best breakfast I have ever had in a restaurant in sometime. I wish they had a location near me house here in Houston. This place was very clean. Waitstaff very friendly. Food was just amazing. From the French Toast to Waffles Migas and Tacos. I will be back again on my next visit up there. I love when you find a amazing Mom and Pop dinner or place to dine at. We also had the Birder Omelette (lots of jalapeños!) and the Port Omelette... all were very, very good. We had a 4 year old and baby with us, as well. Kids pancakes were great.
