We came in here late afternoon on a Friday and I really wanted to like Grandma Mary's. Like really…read morewanted to. And parts were very good and others lacking. Very hit or miss. Let's start with the good. First the service. Spot on! Our server was fun, happy, friendly and helpful. I can't say enough good things about here. I had the cod, beer battered, with French fried cole slaw. The fish portion was smaller than expected, but perfectly cooked, and I mean perfect. The fries were also great and plentiful. The cole slaw was creamy and tasty. Another of us got the roast beef dinner with American fries (pas fried potatoes) and the chicken and dumpling soup. The roast beef was very good and the potatoes were excellent. The soup was terrible however; it tasted more like corn starch than anything else. We didn't finish it. The other got the all you can eat shrimp with French fries and past a salad. The shrimp were good and the fries as well, but the pasta salad just meh. The restaurant itself is cute and spacious. The main issue with Mary's is that they seem to just be going through the motions. Their clientele are mostly on the older side and maybe they aren't very critical. Or maybe there aren't that many alternatives in the area. But what could be a really great place with amazing food ends up being just meh overall. What they do well, they do exceedingly well. But you have to find those things.

The space is located along the Wisconsin River and the large windows in the cafe allow for a breathtaking view while enjoying lunch. The menu is quite small which I appreciated but still had a hard time deciding what I wanted to enjoy because they all sounded so yummy. They use fresh local ingredients as much as possible ensuring that they support the local region and aligns beautifully with the concept of Frank Lloyd Wright. It was a rainy day so I opted for comfort with grilled cheese and a soup of the day. The gooey cheese sandwich with aged cheddar and Gouda paired perfectly with my potato bacon soup. My friend opted for the kale chicken salad that included ingredients for a scrumptious fall salad with pepitas, cranberries, butternut squash, goat cheese and sherry shallot dressing. The set up is order at the counter, find a seat and they bring your food to you. It was a really quiet day and our food came out quickly. The staff seemed to be out of sight much of the time so if you needed something it was a little bit of a wait. I had asked for a box but they didn't bring it and I ended up having to ask again.

My whole family had another wonderful dinner experience. It was packed, so it was a bit louder, but we didn't mind. We were distracted by all the food. The cheese curds were lightly breaded and fried perfectly. They even had a bit of a squeak. The haystacks were enjoyed even by my family who didn't like onions. The prize app were the pork bellies. Tender, meaty, and covered with a sweet tangy bourbon glaze. I could've eaten those as an entree! My filet was a perfect med-rare. Tender with just the right amount of char. The ribeye was prepared with the same tender perfection as well. My son, who lives in Chicago, said his steak rivaled those of the steakhouses in Windy City. He really enjoyed his filet. The scallops were seared to perfection, and they were nestled in a bed of soft, warm, creamy risotto. And I mean CREAMY. It's the way they should be made. HPSH doesn't skimp either on the number of scallops; we had to box up the rest. We didn't have room for dessert, but we did box some up for later.....and they tasted great. Can't wait til our next visit to High Point!

It was a…read morelittle last minute - we have 3 kids, one of which is a baby, so I called on Friday afternoon for a Saturday evening reservation. The automated recording said to send a Facebook message for reservations, so I went to their page. It was very simple, and was able to get a reservation for 7:30 pm. I asked if it made a difference that it was for a birthday celebration, and they said it definitely mattered, and that they offered a boozy dessert if that was something he would be interested in. When we arrived Saturday evening, we were immediately ushered over to our table. It was the perfect spot for a duo, and the atmosphere was very cozy. Everyone was so kind and we immediately ordered beverages - I chose the Aviation martini, and my husband a glass of Caymus. Martinis are obviously all alcohol, but DAMN was it strong. I don't drink much anymore, so it may have been a poor choice for myself. My husband had been wanting to try Caymus for a long time, and he enjoyed his glass. For our entrees, I opted for the 5 oz. filet mignon with coconut shrimp and a side of Smoky's onion rings. For the accompaniment, I chose the garlic & fine herb cheese crust, which was phenomenal! My mouth is watering as I type this, recalling how delicious it was. I ordered my steak medium, but it was definitely more on the medium rare side. I would have sent it back, but by the time I discovered it (it was so dark in the restaurant) it was mostly just the middle left. I decided to box the remainder up to cook further and enjoy at home. The coconut shrimp was sweet and crunchy (perfect) and the onion rings were very tasty, especially with the side of peppercorn ranch. For his entree, my husband ordered the 16 oz. ribeye with local melted bleu crust and Smoky's hashbrowns. You know he loves his steak when he takes a bite, closes his eyes, and chews it slowly. Driftless Social knocked it out of the park with this one! He absolutely devoured it. His only complaint was that the bleu cheese was more of a sauce, and less of a crust. Now on to the hashbrowns - we LOVED Smoky's when it was still around, and when we found out that Driftless Social was incorporating favorites from Smoky's, we were stoked. My father-in-law worked as a bus boy there in the 1950s, and we considered it a staple in our families for many celebrations over the years. We were gutted when it closed. These hashbrowns, however, were not what we remembered. They were almost reminiscent of a potato bake, which was a little too starchy for us. We really enjoyed the crispy top though! When it was time to order dessert, I mentioned to the waitress that it was his birthday. She listed off 3 desserts, so we assumed that all were complimentary for birthdays, and not just the boozy dessert that I was informed of ahead of time. Partly our fault, but it was also presented in a strange way. My husband ordered the apple crisp (absolutely HEAVENLY), but we were charged for it. We asked the waitress to see if it was a mistake, and she said it wasn't. I did reach out via Facebook messenger to the restaurant regarding this, and they were so kind! They sincerely apologized, and are sending a gift card in the mail. We are very excited to return - I need more of that garlic & fine herb cheese crust in my life!

What an awful, stupid experience…read more This all started because their lattes DO NOT COME WITH ESPRESSO. The staff acted like I was an idiot for asking if the iced lavender latte I ordered had espresso. I'm 40 and have never ordered an "iced latte" from a cafe just to be served cold milk, but that's exactly what I got. I asked if I could get it remade with coffee, and they again brought out just iced milk with syrup. This time I asked for just a couple shots of espresso on the side so I could add it to the drink. They eventually at the end of the meal brought out a mug full of lukewarm espresso - probably 4-6 shots! I added a splash to my drink, mixed, and it was (finally) really tasty! But then I got my bill and they had tacked an extra $5 ($2.95 for the espresso + another $2.00 for ???) On top of already paying $4.95 for just cold flavored milk, I guess? When I tried to explain what happened, the cashier, I assume Karin, got combative and that's when I learned this entire weird experience was because they simply don't include espresso in their lattes! At any point somebody could've cleared this up, the cashier knew exactly what the issue was as soon as I asked about the charges, and was ready to argue! I was told "that's just how they named it" and I should've "read the description". So I would've known they're the only place I've ever encountered that considers just flavored iced milk at $4.95 a "latte". She said "chai & matcha lattes don't have espresso" therefore it shouldn't be assumed a "latte" comes with espresso. Chai & matcha have their own caffeine! It's the caffeine that makes a latte, not milk. Why in the hell am I literally arguing the definition of a latte with this lady??? I was really chill up until this point. I was more incredulous than anything. Served just iced milk twice? Takes almost the whole meal to just get gross overload of espresso? Whatever. But to then be charged an extra $5 (making this drink almost $10!) and argued with by staff? That was a bridge too far. Went from just a weird, bad time to a positively nasty time. Top 3 worst dining experiences. Good job, Spring Green General Store, these out-of-towners definitely won't be back, which seemed to be the point. Hope the extra $5 you bullied out of us was worth it!
