I was super disappointed at how salty and spicy everything was until I tried Quesabirria at this place. I didn't expect much since I lost appetite after eating food with strong seasoning consecutively for several days. The service was good when we ordered our food and when our food was delivered but we had to track the guy down to get our check and we were never checked on after the food was dropped off. We ordered a $14 guacamole, but received a tiny dipper bowl what looked like may be 3 oz cup of guacamole and 14 inches of space around occupied with chips). They didn't list this was chips order with a side of guacomole. They couldn't have made a mistake for a side since there wasn't such a thing on their menu. We were in town for a convention and Porfiro's was a short walk from our hotel. The interior has wooden tables and interesting decor. Currently they are waiting for their alcohol license but they will serve drinks customers purchased next door at a small liquor store. We started with the chicken tortilla soup. It is tomato based with avocados slices, shredded chicken, and tortilla strips. The tortilla strips tasted a bit stale but the avocado enhanced the soup. We shared the chicken quesadilla. It was loaded with cheese and chicken. It came served with lettuce, and small amounts of Pico de gallo, and guacamole. The pico was fresh but the guacamole had a refrigerator taste. Merely steps away from my hotel, this surprisingly spacious Mexican food place with a bar that can't be used (no liquor license) seemed like a great choice for a change of pace. Went on a Saturday afternoon after visiting the aquarium. It was about a 10 minute walk but worth it for some real food. Beautiful decor and spacious. Appears great for large groups. They're fairly new and it was quiet. But I urge you to try this place. I loved everything I ate and can't wait to go back and try more. Service: great. This is not your typical "Mexican" food, as the selection of available appetizers and entrees on the menu is impressive. For an appetizer, definitely try the Corn Ribs. The quality of my tacos was above average, but most importantly, made with quality ingredients. We came here after a visit to the World of Coca Cola and were a little surprised by how big it was and how empty it was. We are from California ( and from Redwood City which imo is the land of the best tacos ) and we were impressed at how amazing these tacos were. They were pricey with each taco was 5.50 each but definitely was loaded with the best flavors. The green sauce (mild) and the red sauce ( hot and mind blowing) were really good too! Definitely not worth the price for the quality of food. Some of the most bland food I have ever eaten. Served something that looked like bean soup and told it was a side of beans. It had more liquid than beans in the bowl. My tacos were soggy and drowned in wet lettuce and watery salsa verde. The chicken was tough and chewy without much flavor. We asked for a California burrito with no lettuce sour cream and no meat. What they brought out was then stuffed with veggies that were nothing like what we asked for. Queso had no flavor neither did the salsa that came with the chips. Corn ribs were still hard and you had to pick off the corn kernels. The great reviews for Porfirio's are spot on! As others have mentioned, they had just received their liquor license when we dined here but not yet were serving alcohol. The owners son chatted with our table and explained they were happy to allow us to purchase liquor from next door and provide us with ice/glasses/mixers if we chose to do so. This was a work dinner during a conference, and I was easily able to make a reservation for 9. Everyone's food looked amazing and my steak burrito was HUGE and extremely tasty. Came here as a reservation party of 13 with coworkers and I was impressed at their handling of our large party. Appetizers came out quickly and there was only a couple minutes in between the first person and the last person to receive their entree. Their menu is interesting, with an Italian Mexican fusion section of pastas. I was feeling Mexican, so I ordered the enchiladas with salsa verde. It was very good and my only wish is that there has been a little more of the salsa verde on top of the dish. At the time of this post this restaurant is BYOB with a liquor store close by, so we brought in a couple bottles of premixed margaritas and six packs. Food was absolutely amazing. The staff was so friendly and they made sure you were taken care of. I tried the Pollo Ranchero with a Cucumber Limonada and it was amazing. The Pollo was so juicy and flavorful that it left you wanting more. It was a good portion that could easily be shared. Be careful with the habanero sauce as it really packed a punch. The Cucumber Limonada was so refreshing and paired perfectly with the chicken and rice and beans. Of course, I didn't stop there and I ordered the concha ice cream sandwich, which left me so full the ice cream sandwich had berries in it, and the buns were toasted which made it so much better. I have never seen a dessert like this and I honestly wanted a second round. They don't serve alcohol at this location just yet however, the vibes were amazing. The food was great. The music was great. The servers were great. The owner was very transparent on waiting on his liquor license, but allowed you to go next-door to get some drinks.
