We went to Popovers last night after seeing a movie at the O'Neill's cinema which is basically next door. It was about 9 PM. I've never been to a Popovers before. Ordering: When you enter the restaurant, you go straight ahead to two cash registers and order from a menu on the wall. You then choose a seat and wait for your food to be delivered to you. Ordering is difficult. The registers are right by the door and there's really not a lot of space when you're trying to read the menu. And there were very few in line when we got there -- I imagine trying to order during the meal time rush would be quite difficult. I was not expecting cafeteria style and would really rather have been waited on by a waiter or waitress. Decor: I liked the black and white European-themed photos on the wall. However I found the drop ceiling jarring and not in keeping with the overall theme. There was an unsuccessful attempt at a trendy chandelier which I really did not like. The bathrooms were nice. The entire restaurant was clean and bright. Food: I had the special, which was cider glazed pork with a potato pancake and fresh green beans. It was spectacular. The beans were fresh and crunchy, the pork was tender and falling apart, and the potato pancake was crisp and tasty. Hubby had the meatloaf with red potatoes and carrots. The vegetables were quite good. I had a bite of the meatloaf; the meat itself was tasty but I found the barbecue sauce on top very heavy and gloppy and there was just too much of it. Price: The food was somewhat pricey, especially given the cafeteria style ordering. Staff: A very nice group of servers and cashiers. Everyone was helpful and pleasant. Overall a nice little place. i'm sure we'll return. read more

Love having this place so close to home. Great food and service and desserts are amazing. Try the clam chowder with a warm popover you can thank me later! They offer take out parking, an outdoor eating area, movie and meal deal (kinda like the old galley hatch offer) and Downeast cider in tap. read more

Here's why I give it a 5.... people make the difference! The food is okay and in my opinion a little pricey for what they offer. The people and service, however is awesome! I watched the GM... not sure of his name personally interact with customers and staff alike, making everyone feel special. The bartenders and waitstaff were very friendly and attentive and the service was fast! Now.. the food and drink.... I was there for happy hour and chose to go with house wine. Unless you are on a budget, don't do it. The $1.50 savings on really bad and cheap wine is not worth it. I ordered a small smoked salmon salad which was good, but salad and cream cheese spread was clearly previously frozen. Love the free popovers! They are sooo good! Hence the name! Oh, and the salad needs to be on a bigger plate. Portion was fine but I hate when the plate is so small that when I am trying to eat my food is falling off the plate. I regret giving this rating, because I've had much better at Popovers before, but today was just disappointing. The clam chowder had a lot of fatty bacon in it. More bacon than clams. I originally ordered the hearty vegetable soup, but they were out, so I opted for the chowder. I could not eat it, though I tried to for several bites. The half sandwich was turkey. The taste of the hot turkey was not pleasant to me at all and only had 1 or 2 bites. I asked for it to be removed and ordered a popover with maple butter and coffee, which was fabulous. The desserts are amazing. I can't fault them there. But "poorly thought out" is an understatement to describe the space. There's an impenetrable mob of people at the entrance whenever they're busy. The registers are closer to the door than the display cases for the desserts, and take-out customers are supposed to wait in front of the display cases after they order. So people who are trying to look at the selection are fighting their way through people standing and waiting, all in an aisle that's about 4 feet wide. Oh, and to make matters worse, the coffee urns are in the same aisle. They need at least twice the space they have. read more

We had the best experience here for a birthday lunch. They started by bringing us over a small basket of mini popovers. Yum. The flavored ice tea was very good as well. Our waitress was attentive and patient as a few people in the group decided to change some of their orders as we went around the table! We all had the half soup and salad. The clam chowder was amazing, creamy and delicious. The salad I ordered included gorgonzola cheese and pears. Amazing. We finished off with the sundae in a popover. HIGHLY recommend this dessert. So we were told that this place is supposed to have best desserts in town. Maybe it does. But the overall quality was just good. There was nothing magical about the creme Brule or the Chai lattes or any of the popovers. I've had much better in other places. The service however wad great and the staff was very nice. read more

went in to eat for my dinner break for work. Sat at the bar. First thing i noticed was mass quantities of fruit flies. I mean not one or two like few dozen flying around and landing on food and drinks. yuck. Ordered my half sandwich and salad, which was delicious, but i had to spend half my time keeping fruit flies out of my food. I asked the bartender what was up with all the fruit flies, my answer was they can't be helped with all the wine and fruit garnishes around. I beg to differ. I go to lots of restaurants and bars and never have any problems with fruit flies flying around at all. seems to me that excuse is a cover up for poor cleaning. Maybe if your employees stayed off their cell phones while working some cleaning might get done. read more

What happened to Popovers?! The Portsmouth location because this one hands-down. I find the employees are getting more and more belligerent and rude. for example, I came in trying to make a movie and did not want takeout but just wanted to order grab it to go and then sit down. They would not let me. They basically forced me to have tableservice. I find that very poor especially when the restaurant just opens and is nearly empty. read more

Popovers is all full service now after 11:00 am The staff is super friendly and the food is amazing! I find the prices in line with the quality of the food delivered. The braised shortribs are so tender you don't even need a knife!! The vegetables taste like they were just picked in the garden and the roasted potatoes are awesome! There are 2 pastry cases - one is all cakes and they will slice them if you'd like a piece!! I've tried several of the deserts - the chocolate mint cake is like a slice of heaven!! There are deserts to please everyone from the fruity desert lover to the rich, deep chocolate lover! If you're gluten free just about anything on the menu can be prepared for you including a tomato bisque and clam chowder that are out of this world!! There are also several deserts that are gluten free as well!! I suggest visiting and visiting hungry!!! My husband and I came to Popovers on a Sunday night, to use a "dinner and a movie" gift certificate we received for Christmas.... Our Movie started at 6:40 so we decided to head to popovers to get a drink, then have dinner after the movie as we had had a late lunch that day. We sat at the bar and ordered a couple of beers and the popovers (as everyone said they were so delicious!) We found the popovers to be good, but not great. The homemade butter was very nice! The bartender was polite, but kind of disinterested in any of the patrons at the bar. She asked us if we wanted to order dinner and we explained that we were seeing a movie at 6:40 and would be coming back for dinner afterwards. She sighed and said OK and walked off to chat with another employee. When our movie was over (8:30ish), we headed back over for dinner only to find that they were closed for the night.... It would have been nice of our bartender to let us know that they closed at 8 when we told her we were coming back later... We ended up going across the parking lot to Kume and it was delicious! read more

My husband and I recently moved to the area. We have been to Popovers 3 times and all three the food was consistently delicious and the staff were all warm and welcoming. Our most recent waitress Dawna was incredibly helpful, personable and sweet. The manager Phillip was very engaged with his guests and staff and very friendly to talk to. Nice to walk into a restaurant, mention to server that because of arthritis we can not sit at a high table, and got instant attitude..told, sarcastically we would have to wait for a regular table, not a problem. Asked how long the wait was, again a sarcastic " I have no idea, I can put you on the list" another server comes to our aide (looks at 1st server and shakes head)and says it will just be a couple of minutes . Sat at table, ordered pancakes, because I am diabetic asked for sugar free syrup, "oh, we dont have sugar free syrup !" Went there for the first time for a quick dinner because my wife had been there before for lunch and had liked it. Reception and wait staff was friendly and quick. The popovers were slightly warm and ok. We both ordered the Angus Beef Burger and we both did not finish it. The bun was completely oily on the outside and the burger itself was a soggy, fatty mess. If this was really Angus beef it was the worst I have ever had. The bakery looks pretty good though but after this meal we had no appetite for desert. Don't think we will make it back. read more

PROS: The veggies were not over cooked CONS: My "beef short ribs" did not have that luscious fattiness that I was expecting so I believe it is the usual chuck roast substitute that is becoming a fad with restaurants that don't want to pay for the real deal. The roasted potatoes were limp, cold, and greasy. Had it been real short ribs served with a garlic smashed red potato side, the green beans, and a red wine demi glace I would have enjoyed it more. My dessert was a take home creme brulee, unfortunately when you take it home it comes in an aluminum pan and I found the aluminum made the brulee taste metallic. Another waste. I've been to Popover's twice now and each time I ordered the Monte Cristo. This sandwich is so delicious! I love the popovers as well, the maple butter is to die for when on a nice warm popover! I love the atmosphere, feels like a mixture between a Panera Bread and a cozy diner. Can't wait to come one night after a movie for a drink at the beautiful bar and to try one of the dinner specials. I hear from a friend that this place had a nice bakery selection. While they did have a good selection of items, what my girlfriend and I got was a bit over priced and old. Her cake was very very dry and for a such a small slice it thought $5.00 was a bit high. I got a fruit tart and the crust was so hard I couldn't break through it without a struggle. Never had the food here, but if you're looking for deserts just go to Market Basket a few doors down. read more

When a restaurant is called popovers it should have extraordinary popovers. Unfortunately Popovers did not get the message. The popovers were lukewarm and just not great. The so so salads are served in a popover which makes it soggy. We did not have dessert so I can't comment on them. read more

Great breakfast sandwiches and coffee for breakfast. My wife and I also love the movie dinner deals. Overall this is a great restaurant and they are so nice. I have nothing but good things to say about this place. Excellent clam chowder, and the popovers are pure heaven. Service is always perfect, seating is comfortable, and baked goods are fabulous. I wish the regular butter were not served in individual packets and I wish the deviled eggs were still on the menu. I also appreciate the outdoor seating with umbrellas when I have my yellow Lab with me (and she is also a huge fan of the popovers). read more

Went to the 'Popovers' in Epping for the 1st time after the movies and enjoyed it very much! The food was wonderful...love you can order 1/2 & 1/2 of soup, salad or sandwich. The staff was patient and helpful as it is a lot to take in. Would be helpful to let the customer know with a sign that you need to order at the register. Desserts are pricey but delicious! On the high side for price but our meals were quality ingredients. Look forward to coming again!! read more

The first time my co-workers & I ate there for lunch; the waitstaff was extremely slow so we ended up only having time for soup before mad dash back to work. The second time I tried it the wait time was much better. Upon recommendations I ordered the salmon salad and had an eclair - extremely disappointed on both counts. Went recently with another couple for dinner after a movie. My herb crusted chicken was good, but the roasted potatoes were undercooked. My husband's salmon was good, but his rice pilaf was in crusty clumps he had to cut apart with knife. Service was OK, but we never got the basket of mini popovers. Be aware they charge for iced tea and soda refills. I had Indian Pudding for dessert, which was good (and a huge portion). My friend got the French Apple Crisp, which he said was doughy and unimpressive. I've been to Popover's in the past for breakfast and light lunches, which they seem to be better at. Unfortunately, they do not seem to be able to make up their mind about their business model. When they opened, it was a coffee shop, you ordered at the counter and picked up your drinks and food(like the Portsmouth location). You felt comfortable hanging out with friends chatting for a while, drinking coffee and buying more food as you did. Now that they have wait service in the whole restaurant all day, it's more of an "eat and go" atmosphere, as you don't want to irritate the waitress by overstaying your welcome. (As we found out when I was there with a group of friends, and the manager made some pointed remarks about us to our waitress.) I get that she is depending on tips, but we did not know before we got there that they had changed their wait service policy since the last time we had visited. We had to send something back because it was made with some sort of meat marmalade and the person who ordered it is a vegetarian. It was impossible to get anyone's attention and once our waitress did materialize I could tell it was a problem for her. The vegetarian had to order off of the children's menu to find a meat-free sandwich. The other sandwich was taken back to the kitchen and we never saw it again, until we got the bill. They charged us for both. So one grilled American cheese sandwich from the children's menu cost us about $15. It's a shame because a good sandwich/soup shop is just what the town needs. Stopped in today to try out the new location. I've been to the Portsmouth one quite a few times, and love everything from the food to the friendliness of the staff. Today was a little off...maybe it's "working out the kinks" or something..but it's definitely a different feel. Didn't find the staff as helpful or as friendly. The woman at the cash register walked away in the middle of my order to go talk to people seated at the bar and told the other young lady to "take over" (even she gave her a bewildered look like "What the heck are you doing"). They were good about letting me take my time trying to figure out what to get. But when I turned around there was a line behind me and the lady was still talking to friends seated at the bar area. Staff seemed a little annoyed the covers weren't fitting on the coffee cups (there were at least 3 others having problems with it as well), and the popovers are served cold??? (I've always had them heated in Portsmouth but maybe they don't do that in Epping). Pastries looked great.....the girl helping someone in the bakery area was super friendly. Again, I'd go back, but maybe train the staff a little more in customer service....a smile and willingness to help customers go a long way. read more

My arrival was so disturbing that I almost walked out. I arrived early for lunch. I was pointed toward the hi-top tables and requested a booth. I am short and find hi-top tables uncomfortable. There were several empty booths. The receptionist turned around, walked briskly to a booth and threw the menu down. She never looked at me or said a word. Outrageous. The waitress was wonderful, food was much better than my last visit. I had the angus burger. It was delicious. However, nothing made up for the reception. I won't be back. Not worth it. Just visited the new location for Popovers for the second time today. The first time I ordered the chicken quesadilla and was quite pleased with it and the side salad that arrived on the same plate. I had decided to sit outside and wait for my lunch, as it was a nice warm Fall day. The staff not only brought my lunch to me, but asked me if I would like the "real silverware" vs. the plastic that I had brought out for myself. They also asked me if I would like a to-go container before I left. I'd say that they were very helpful, which I appreciated. I visited today for the second time to order a take-out lunch to bring back to work with me. I ordered the crab cakes with a small pear salad on the side. They packaged up the crab cakes and the salad separately, so as to keep the crab cakes warm and the salad cool and crisp (not a soggy mess). Also, they included a delicious pop-over roll, that again was not packaged in with the hot food, thus it was nice and fesh for lunch. The two crab cakes were substantial and plenty to eat for lunch. Can't wait to try Popovers for dinner one evening soon so that I can try the cocktails! read more
