A lot of the tea boxes are closed. They moved the two boxes forward everything off of just regular grass and whole number 12. They're doing major repairs they have the green clothes and you're hitting into a hole in the fairway. The greens are very slow. They're not rolled. I understand it's winter. I would wait till fall to start playing. read more

Poolesville doesn't qualify as one of the better courses on the Montgomery County system. The same price as Northwest -- but not nearly as nice -- your time and money are better spent elsewhere. They seem to be trying to make some improvements, but the course suffers from long-term neglect. Not sure why I would return. read more

Driving to this golf course was like watching a horror movie, I drove through winding roads, some small town neighborhoods then this two-lane, cornfield surrounded road and the sign was not exactly noticeable. In the front was cornfields and buildings were dilapitated it was strangely odd. It didn't look like a "golf course". It started drizzling as well so I decided to leave and true enough by the 5th hole, those rest who stayed for golf were caught in a big storm. I simply wasn't feeling it so I was glad I left. read more

I'm writing to merely defend this course. I will say that the previous reviews were written years back so that may have something to do with my disconnect, but this course is in great shape. Yes, it's not in the suburbs, (which for me is nice and relaxing, not at all a horror film) doesn't have a manicured entry way with a fancy stone sign, and It is not Pinehurst #2, but, it is a nice course for mid to high handicappers looking to get out with friends for a good time. If I had any complaint at all it's that some of the holes on the front nine run close together so make sure you mark your ball clearly as some one hit my ball on an adjacent hole. So, whatever... I played it in early June and had a blast. Weather was perfect. The fairways were in good shape and the greens rolled true and fast. The "cart girl" came by to replenish us at least 4 times during the 18 hole round (adult beverage prices were decent I might add). So if your an actual golfer (not a PGA tour critic) give it a whirl. You will be pleasantly surprised. read more

It's a muni. It's not a fancy muni, it's a bad hot dog, grumpy starter, and slow play muni but it's a beautiful piece of land, it;s a challenging course, and the keep it in very reasonable shape, especially given the number of rounds it sees. Watch for deals. The twilight deals are typically something like $20 with a cart. And, while you're in Poolesville, go by Basset's for a beer and a sandwich. read more

Solid track for a muni. Price is just about right. Everything is right in front of you, gentle doglegs left and right, and pretty good conditions overall. Greens were slow, but ran smoothly. Walkable too. read more

As my home course, I've gotten to know Poolesville fairly well over the years. This isn't a top notch course, but for an affordable course in Montgomery county that's fairly forgiving, this is one of the better courses. They do get busy during peak times like any other course, so walk ons are a gamble fit a tee time. read more

I haven't played here in a year or two - it's a bit of a hike for me from Arlington. But I've played it many, many times in the past. VERY inexpensive, pretty town course. If the lodge was still open I would give it another star. That was a great place to share a pitcher of Sam Adams ($8 special) after the round. This is a fun course for all skill levels. It's open enough that the higher handicapper won't lose many golf balls, but the fairways are lined with little evergreens that will make the lower handicapper struggle for par if he/she misses the fairways. There some decent length to the course as well so you'll get to hit some drivers. Course conditions are usually OK - mainly because the course doesn't get as much play as other area courses due to its somewhat remote location. I've found it especially good late in the year when it gets minimal play. The lesson here is that golfers are generally bad for a golf course's condition. I'm glad I wrote this review. I'm gonna make a concerted effort to get out there sometime this fall! read more

Poolesville Golf Course is one of the longer courses within Montgomery County Golf. It's almost 7000 yards of rolling fairways with few elevation changes or challenging shots. There aren't too many holes that really stand out, but I find myself admiring the serene beauty of a course nestled within the middle of nowhere. What the course lacks in imagination, it certainly makes up for with distance. Most of the holes are pretty straight, but if you miss the fairway, you'll probably find yourself playing for bogey (or worse :( ) due to its sheer length and difficulty working yourself out of the rough. The course doesn't experience as much foot traffic as some of the other MCG courses closer to DC, so my rounds have usually been less than 4.5 hours (thank god!) and therefore the course conditions are also slightly better than most public courses. The tee time prices are pretty inexpensive and I've always found the staff to be super-friendly; there usually is a cart-girl on the weekends. It's a longer drive to get here for me compared to other courses, i.e. Needwood, Laytonsville, or Northwest, but the green pastures and wide open views of the land make the drive a pleasant trip. Overall, I would say I don't come up here that often, but every now and then, playing here is a worthwhile experience for me. read more

After playing the Course today I was Extremely pleased with the Condition of the course and the price is right including the Free Lunch. If you want to play a course where you don't wait at every hole like most Muni's I highly recommend Poolesville. The Manager Jeff is very Professional and Very Helpful. Went to the course yesterday afternoon. I paid for a $37 green fee plus $15 for a cart. I started on hole 12 with friends and to my surprise after finishing number 18 on my way to the first tee, there was a 45 minutes wait due to heavy booking. I politely asked if I could just get rain check and they totally said no. Folks it's only a county public course and I have been playing there for many years. The new staff are extremely rude. They don't greet you nor make you feel welcome. The course is not all that to be over charging people. Maybe they are trying to catch up from the 2 months closure. This will be the last golf course on this planet I will ever play again. read more

This was the first of the Montgomery County courses that I played. I tried it because of the comments about good pace of play. Since then I have played 4 others (Falls Road, Needwood, Laytonsville and Little Bennett). All were better than this course. I only play midweek and the pace of play was not better (4.5hrs for 18). Maybe the weekends are different. It also took the longest to drive to from Bethesda of the 5 courses, with LOTS of camera speed zones on the way. The clubhouse is bare bones, with only food offering a self-serve hot dog machine and prepackaged food. Staff were very nice, as they have been at every MCG course I've been to. Condition of the course was OK. It is a long, flat course with few elevation changes and few trees. Least scenic of the 5. On the positive side, except for a couple water holes, it is virtually impossible to lose balls. It is OK if you live nearby, but I will not drive that far to come here again. read more

I waited several minutes for a girl to give me a tea time despite two other employees standing there doing nothing in the shop. Later, only teenagers were working in there. There are few signs telling you where the next hole is even when that's not terribly obvious (the golf cart path sometimes forks and you're left to guess which way to go). The signs at holes give no indication of the hole layout (straight, dogleg), only distance. I used an app to figure it out. They compensate by having a flag, which looks just like the pin flags, pretty much, in the middle of fairways to give you some idea where to aim. Otherwise you sometimes can't really tell where to go. Some greens are really close to others on the "other" 9. The putting green here is pretty flat. They do have a sand bunker next to it. The range allows hitting from the mat or the grass, though signs told me not to use the grass that day. I don't know the reason. The range is right next to the parking lot. The worst thing about the range, to me, is that in the late afternoon (3pm), the sun put my shadow on the ball so that I saw my swing as I was doing it. I find that very distracting. Red Gate is like that, too. I never use such a range twice. Also, the tees there were too short and I saw no taller ones, so I started using my own in the grass despite the signs saying not to. I arrived and bought a tee time for an hour after my arrival, for 4:21 on a weekday. As I pulled up to it at exactly 4:21, four golfers were starting their round on my tee time. Not good. It wasn't a back up, I don't think, as the courses were largely empty. Just bad management. Tee 1 and 10 are literally next to each other so I did the back 9 instead. I only did the back 9 because my playing was horrendous for reasons having nothing to do with the course, but I will say that you will lose a lot of balls here if playing badly. They have 2-3 foot tall grass in the middle of the fairways, behind greens, and along the sides quite often. Several greens had so much sand in them that, as my ball rolled, you could actually see sand shooting up behind the ball the way a wheel sprays water behind it. Par 3 tees were in terrible shape, tons of divots out. I had to look for a spot to play from. They had water stations on the course, so that was good. Overall I didn't like the course or facility much. My bad playing didn't influence that except for the ease of losing balls. read more

Solid track for a muni. Course was in decent condition. Only once all day did I land in the fairway and end up on a bare spot. Greens not fast but rolled well. Narrow fairways. Went for a week day special (before 12noon) where $29 covered greens fee, cart, lunch and a sleeve of balls! Special runs thru Oct 28th, I believe. Pretty drive up River Road. Having stayed away from Poolesville for several years, I gave it another go this past weekend. The Good News was that there was no wait to tee off, we were able to get out on the course right on-time. The starter was friendly and seemed to be on the ball. Tees, fairways and roughs were all in good condition. Range was grass instead of mats, a big improvement over my past experiences there. The Bad News was that they had aerified the greens and didn't mention that online or in the pro shop. No discount was given, so paying full rack rate of $60 to watch putts bounce all over the place while kicking up sand was frustrating. Don't know why they would aerify right before labor day weekend. Then when we made the turn there were suddenly a bunch of new foursomes in front of us? Seemed like they might have put 9 hole players off the back 9. Our back nine was considerably slower than the front nine because of this. In general, the experience was slightly better than it was years ago. The course was in good shape. Aeration is a necessary evil, but they should at least inform and discount like most other courses. read more

Played 18 today, walked the whole time and it was very tolerable given most MoCo courses are not walkable. There were only 3 tee boxes that were a bit of a hike, everything else was easy. Not a very hilly course, not many hazards, and not large greens. Still a challenging course, offset tee boxes and narrow fairways increase the difficulty. The course is way out there but the price was worth it. This course is worth playing, I will be back to play again. read more

It may a bit of a hike to get there but things have changed for the better at Poolesville. The course is in very good shape. Being it is in Poolesville it usually is not overly crowded. Getting a tee time is no issue. That's why it is such good shape. Worth the trip. read more

Not sure where most of these other reviewers usually play, but as someone who typically plays tough courses and has played competitively, poolesville is one of those deceptively easy courses that seems like you should be able to shoot par easily but it just doesn't quite happen. Partly because its one of the longest courses in the region at 6800yds, partly because there's just enough danger off to the sides that leakage can really kill a hole. I really love this course for two reasons, its quiet (a long ways away from civilization means it doesn't attract much of a crowd), and it has nice large greens with a healthy amount of break almost always well maintained (occasionally a little slow). Course maintenance as a whole is excellent, even though the clubhouse and the dilapidated hotel as you pull into the parking lot give you room for pause. Extra incentive to go, weekday twilight $20. read more
