This is a nice public course in the DMV area. One of the few courses with a nice driving range. They have grass driving range. This is where I come to practice hitting irons. Very well maintained driving range. They have two putting greens and also a chipping area. Fairways and green are nicely maintained. It's a long course with some terrain. Carts are included with the greens fees. I think carts are mandatory here. They have some holes that are cart path only. This is definitely one of the expensive courses in the area. You can pay half off after 2 pm tee. Morning tee times are crazy expensive. I go here once every six months. Restrooms are clean as well. They have a nice bar and restaurant area to watch sports. It's kinda big with indoor/outdoor setup. They also have two shower areas. read more

Course conditions were great- solid grass range, chipping, and putting practice areas that are top notch. The course itself was also in great condition with quick greens, lush fairways, and thick rough. Would definitely recommend based off conditions. My only issue came when starting on the first tee. I paid almost $160 for my tee time, loaded onto my own cart (playing as a solo) and i was ready to tee off when the started told me i couldnt ride alone. He was pretty rude about it considering i had never played there before and insisted i was wrong to want to go out on my own cart. He said i would have to pay $25 ontop of my expensive greenfee to ride by myself. Luckily i was paired with some good people who had no problem sharing a cart. But man did I get a bad vibe from the starter and the guys in the shop didnt tell me about it at all. Wish it was upfront or they asked if I would prefer to walk instead of riding with a random person I had never met before read more

The course is nice but there is one Marshall in particular who is rude and inconsiderate. He lurks around several holes and pressures you to play faster, despite the situation. This has happened the last two times we played there over the past month. The first time it was raining and the group behind us was not waiting for us. We ended up taking 6 minutes longer than the course playing time. The last time he told us to skip a hole to catch the group in front of us....even though the group behind us was nowhere close to us. We told him no, so he called the cops and had them waiting at the clubhouse after 18 holes. This isn't a good way to treat your customers that pay $140 per round. read more

Blue Mash is a great track for sure. They have done a good job setting a golf course on a flat piece of land. Mostly open off the tee but there are a few holes in the lower area that are tree lined. I enjoy having both. The first four holes are a brutal start. I like that they softened the first hole a bit relatively recently. The third is the longest hole and almost always plays directly into the wind. Plus the par 3 4th hole is a really tough green to hit. Other standouts are a great risk/reward par 5 9thhole, a tough par 3 11th hole, a really fun par 5 12th hole, and another tough par 3 17th hole. The other two par 3s could use a slight design change that would really give this course the best set of par 3s in the area. Conditions are generally good to great. After or during the rain, the holes on the back part of the course are really soggy. Some have had big drainage issues over the years. The greens have a ton of slope to them and can be fun when it's playing firm and fast. The driving range here is amazing. The vast majority of the time you are hitting off grass. The chipping green is huge and has two bunkers to practice out of. The putting green is also big. Just a great short game area overall. Definitely a great spot to play and practice. Well worth multiple rounds a year. The staff can be a little hit or miss from my experiences. It would be a good place to join but the membership tee time rules are bizarre to say the least. read more

Beautiful course, hats off to the maintenance crew. Ok, so I wasn't going to saying anything negative, then I read some of the reviews today, and I saw this actually happen. We were in the group behind these guys and we talked to the maintenance guy as he drove by and we thanked him for getting these guys going, if only there were rangers out today. These guys were looking for ball in the pond before the maintenance guy even showed up, we thought he tell them to hurry up, but he sat there for a bit, then he said something to them and they putted and left the green, as he drove by we said thanks. These guys were slow all day. So Matthew M. whoever you are, I am glad you live in another state, hopefully i never play behind you again, and if the green fees are so much that you have to fishing ball out of the water, maybe you should pay cheaper course, or take some lessons. Don't take your bad day of golf out on the guy doing his job. Thanks to the maintenance guy for having a spine and telling these guys to hurry up, most places would just let it continue. Sent four high handicappers off with 10 minute space between tee times and cart path rule. Then proceeded to bug us about pace of play the entire time. I get the pace of play issue, but this was too intrusive and bullying, with no allowance for conditions. And the damn alarms in the carts went off when people were hitting. Wasted $140. read more

Played BM on 6/29/19 with 2 golf buddies and I was impressed with the overall experience despite the heat. This was my first round of 2019 (due to new baby) and after constantly being called out since late 2018, I decided to grant their wishes. After shooting a +9 on the front, I staved off Jason and Rye on the back to hold on for the win with a +8 back nine while only losing 1 ball (of course on #11). Course conditions were optimum, besides a couple aeration marks that were barely visible, greens ran true for the most part. Been over a year since I've played BM and the new tee box on #7 was a great change up from the usual shorty. Practice area is also still in great shape and the 20 min bunker practice before round really helped solidify my W. While the date of my next round is unclear, it was great to play BM again! read more

Course is beautiful and really well kept up. The only reason I can't give them 5 stars is because of the pro shop We had an early tee time on a Saturday where it was going to be about 35-40 degrees and we expected a frost delay. We called the night before, explaining how we live about an hour away and want to see what they're expecting. Rightfully so he said he wasn't sure but we could call in the morning before we leave and they can advise Well we call at 6 am to check on the frost delay and expected delay timing and the woman says "I don't know, we won't even be able to see the fairways until 7. You'll have to just find out when you get here" We got there at 7 (about an hour AFTER sunrise...) only to be told that we won't tee off until 9 am. Would have been nice to get that info on the phone before driving an hour just to wait for 2 more. We only played 9 holes since our tee time got pushed back 2 hours and we were sort of far away from home. They were accommodating and gave us a 9 hole rain check for next time. Sort of a frustrating back & forth with the pro shop, but I want to be clear I don't blame them for the frost delay at all. There's a reason the course looks so nice. I'd imagine we would run into little to no issues in better weather-- they could have just handled this a little more tactfully for their customers who drive a distance to visit read more

From the moment I stepped foot on the property I knew I wasn't at a standard public course. I was greeted with a " welcome to Blue Mash" from the first person I came across. My golfbag was taken and placed on a cart and I was given a quick lay of the land introduction. The staff was top-notch, as was the course itself. A great all-around experience. Strictly for your maintenance guy off of the 17th green today. He yelled at our group to hurry up and putt. No one likes that especially when we had to wait 10 minutes on most tee boxes because of the group in front of us. Maintenance guy is white, early to mid 50s with a gut, should not be working at a course that has higher greens fees. read more

I've now played a few tournaments here, and I wish I liked it more, but it just lacks some character. Never played on my own, but the green fees seem high to me for what you get. Don't get me wrong, the course has been in great shape each time I played, but the layout just lacks any identifying characteristics; it's a standard course that's over priced. read more

Recently played a round at mid morning on a Friday. The course was set up like a muni, but the worst part was that the sprinklers were on non stop. Every tee box, fairway, approach areas to the green and the rough were a muddy mess. Ruined the round. I caught up to the greenskeeper and told him this and he was rude and blew me off. Adult supervision is required, given the dude's in his late 20s. Will not play another round there this season. read more

Following up since I have been able to play the course twice now. It's by far the best public course in Montgomery County. Good couple of warmup holes to start and then the fun really starts. The 8th hole has become my sworn enemy. Also Kent Keith is a GREAT instructor here. I came to him because I was topping and hooking everything and now I've broken 100 in my game. Blue Mash is one of the most fun courses I've played in a while, and definitely the most fun since I've moved to the DC area. My foursome had a 10:20 tee time and we were pleasantly greeted by the staff walking into the clubhouse. It was easy enough to sign in and pay for the round, and that came with a small bucket of free range balls so we could warm up before we teed off. For mid-March, the course seemed to be in GREAT shape, especially comparing it to some other courses we'd played around that time. The layout of the course was fantastic, each hole presenting different challenges, whether it being traps near your tee shot landing zone, water, dog legs. It was a nice blend of fun and difficulty. Some of the teeboxes were new, where parts of the course were "iffy" they had ground under repair signs, so they were definitely paying attention to detail for each hole on the course. Pretty much everything went great throughout the round save for some pace of play issues we had towards the end, but that's definitely not unique to Blue Mash. They do allow walkers on Saturday mornings so I think that might contribute to the slow pace a little bit. After the round we got some food in the clubhouse which was all-in-all, pretty good! I'd say the course runs a little expensive, and will only increase in price as it gets nicer out. We paid $73 for riding 18 which isn't awful, but will end up creeping into the 80's and low 90's as the year goes on. My first experience here was great, and you can tell they really make an effort to take care of the course and make it playable for everyone. I recommend this track if you don't mind reaching into your pocket a bit! Definitely a great round. read more

Blue Mash is a solid course. If you don't like the design, hell you should have played here when hole No 1 was bisected by a giant everyone come hit their balls in me fairway bunker. Back then, it would take weekend duffers an hour to get outta that horrid fairway bunker. It has since been backfilled and gone the way of the dodo bird by way of the magical superintendent. Fast forward to the round I played today. Course was in GREAT condition. Greens were good (although not cut or rolled), fairways were good, and tee boxes were partially closed given where we are in the season but still in good shape. Could you go to another course (Northwest, Laytonsville, Hampshire Greens...or if your lucky enough Montgomery CC, Argyle, Norbeck CC, or Manor CC) sure but I don't find those courses as welcoming as Blue Mash. The reality is Blue Mash is the only non-muni/CC course in this area. It's an expensive daily fee course that does have memberships and styles itself as a 'links' style course (links course ). Basically, you ain't got no blind tee shots, everything is in front of you. What I absolutely hate about this course, like another commenter already pointed out, for the love of the golf gods REPLACE THE FREAKING RANGE BALLS!!! For the in season prices you pay to play here, you'd think the GM would have more than enough money to replace em. The staff is here is ok. Pro shop folks are nice, few of the old retired guys that man the till are talkers and will bust your chops, teaching staff top notch, bar staff...meeh the girl that managed the bar today was incredibly apathetic. I'm soo sorry the weather was nice and golfers do what golfers do...find excuses to get away from their offices, wives, kids, or combo of all three to play golf early in the season just because the temp is above 65 in the middle of March. If you're pissed off because your manger scheduled you to man both bar and kitchen, well find somewhere else to work. Back to golf, in season the course is a parking lot because no one gives a dam about pace of play. For the money, I'll hop up 270 and play Whiskey Creek. The secret to Blue Mash is play on a weekday. AVOID PLAYING HERE IN SEASON ON THE WEEKENDS. If you fail to heed my warning you will leave a part of your soul on the course gnashing your teeth whilst watching that 20 handicapper schmuck in front of you dunk one more ball on his third shot on No 11, plus you can kiss the ol 4:30 benchmark goodbye. read more

2.5 stars It's a solid layout and they seem committed to try to manage to a four hour round, but the course is in pretty terrible shape. Municipal courses in Montgomery County are in much better shape at a lower price. Good potential, but the conditions just aren't acceptable especially considering the price. Would return if there are reports of improvements to the course conditions. read more

Course is in good shape and GPS on carts is nice. If you're going to charge so much more than what the MOCO courses charge at least throw in range balls which most of the other semi private courses do. Nice course but not worth $40 more than county courses. I paid about $99 weekend including cart and small bucket which is much more than Hampshire Greens which is also a very nice course. read more

I've played here probably 20 times and most recently in a golf league. The layout of the course is nice and the back 9, which is through the woods more than the front, is challenging. I give a review of 3 stars because for the price, the greens have divots all over the place. You almost have to plan which divots to go through when putting. A few holes seem like they forgot to put them in when they were laying the course out and they threw them in at the last second. The sand is hit or miss with more tjan half not being raked daily and are sopping wet. The clubhouse is very nice with plenty of seating and the waitresses and bar workers are always nice and helpful. read more

Nice course BUT don't expect to hit range balls. They look like they came out of a pond from 8 years ago. Asked the guy in the pro shop if they had any decent range balls to hit and he said "THATS IT!" For what they charge they need to invest in some new range balls. Customers should have to clean mud off of them before they're hit. At least invest in a ball washer. read more

I was really underwhelmed by this golf course, particularly after all the hype it receives. It is basically built on a big open pasture. Not as interesting or picturesque as other area courses. Experiences was not enhanced when, on a 95 degree day without rain, it decided to impose cart-path only rules mid-way through our round, failed to provide any water on the course or provide a drink cart. There is zero evidence that providing water on the course would increase Covid risk. Cart path only was enforced through on-board screen that sounded an alarm if the cart strayed from the cart path. Not impressed with this course or its management at all. read more

While the course was in excellent shape except for the greens, the A. Hills design is absurd. Played here for the first time without the benefit of a yardage book or a detailed GPS. Bad mistake! This fine links course is ruined by undulating terrain just for the sake of undulating terrain. As such, it is reduced to target golf where you work through the windmill and roll the ball through the clown's mouth. The clubhouse and on course staff could not be any better. If your handicap is more than 20 avoid this place like the plague. Even the great internet based green fee did not mitigate the absurd design. read more

Blue Mash is an interesting links style course. If you drive over 250 yards leave the driver in the bag or play from the championship tees. Most of the holes are short enough to get on in regulation with a long iron or hybrid. Because it is a links course you will be tempted to "Grip it and Rip it" but you will quickly find yourself putting for one or two over if you're lucky. Course management is a must and a driver is only needed on two or three holes at most! Considering the price the course could be in better conditions. I did not feel the greens rolled true and several of them were pretty beaten up with ball marks. Blue Mash does have probably the best practice areas of all the public/semi private courses in Montgomery County Maryland. The course staff is friendly and it is pretty easy to get a tee time. I was surprised by the slow play by one foursome which backed up play for four or five groups and there was no marshal in sight. Great place to practice just so so to play! read more

made my return trip to the course earlier this week and felt it necessarily to update my previous review. the course still played very well, even better this time since the grounds weren't over saturated with water. but what i'd really like to update from my last review would be the customer service. this time around, there were plenty of people working the course (too many probably, because there were several holes where the grounds crew were working while we played through). but the snack cart was in full force and the club house was quick. the best part would have to be the course marshal who came out (though pretty late in our round) to offer us ice soaked towels for the heat (since it was well over 100 degrees). that alone right there deserves the upgrade. read more

This is one of the best public courses in the Montgomery County region. The prices are a little steep in comparison. But you can see why when you play there. I have played here a handful of times and I would say it is a fairly difficult course, depending on the risks you take. False advertising to the utmost despicable extent. Promote a 9-hole BBQ Night golf tournament for $65 a person. 2-man scramble. Prizes given to the 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place finishers. Sounds like a blast... However show up at the course. Get grief for asking for two buckets of balls per foursome. There is zero BBQ. Pay for your own food. Zero discount. 2 drink tickets. Domestic can beer or whatever is on tap. Zero awards given out. No prizes. Just raping you for the utmost expensive 9-holes I have ever paid for. Moreover the rules were changed to play your own ball and best ball in your twosome is the score. However on the course some groups were playing captains choice in their respective twosomes. I recommend you avoid this bogie over priced ego driven dump of a golf course at all cost. The MGC golf courses are playing so well. Get to Laytonsville or Hampshire Greens. Save your money. The customer service and treatment is plain and simply terrible at Blue Mash. Save your money. read more

Definitely a course worth checking out; I'm a DC resident so I have no other place to golf in DC besides some goat ranch. This place is tucked away in Laytonsville, MD. I read great reviews about this place and that it was one of the top courses in the area. I guess the bar was set way too high bc I wasn't that impressed. No way this is an $80 course! While the tee boxes and fairways were in good shape, the greens were not and very slow. Really no holes that were jaw dropping.. Only thing that really sticks out were the amount of shared fairways that kind of gave it a municipal feel. If you're charging $80, and claiming it's one of the best in the area, I would expect similar conditions to courses such as Whiskey Creek, Ole Hickory or Westfields.
