The good: Well kept and friendly 9 hole course. Cheap relative to other MCG courses. This is not going to be a challenge to most players, but if you only have about 1.5 hrs or 2 to play, this will do the job. If you are a mediocre player you'll leave feeling like Tiger Woods. The bad: There are no par 5s and all of the holes play short even from the blue tees. The pro shop and restaurant could be much nicer. They've added soccer golf. I've only seen people play that once so probably a non-issue. read more

I like the convenience of this course, but the grounds aren't the best. The ground was pretty dry and took a while for me to be able to push my tee down. The grounds team also decided to water a hole for 15 minutes which prevented us from playing. We then kept getting yelled at to play faster and that we were slowing things down, which was pretty frustrating. I might try again in the fall. read more

A little gem in the heart of Silver Spring. Over the last few years the county has threatened countless times to close this little course. Happy to see the surrounding community and golfers alike came together to save this little course from both MoCo bureaucrats and greedy developers. For those who care about such things, this course was the original location for Argyle Country Club. ACC moved to its current location in Layhill after the club sold the course to the MoCo government in the late 1940s as plans were made to build the capital beltway (holes 3 & 4 are adjacent to 495 beltway). The original clubhouse did burn down so the current clubhouse is what the county built. Sligo is a 9 hole facility. Very short course and very walkable. I usually play here after work or put on the practice greens when I'm in the area and just wanna get away from things. Pace of play is almost always slow as most golfers who play here aren't very good or are learning the game. Also don't look to post your scores on this course as USGA doesn't have an official slope rating for this course. This is a great little course to learn the game, get a quick 9 in, or practice round. Staff is great, little pro shop is decently stocked (for immediate purposes of playing this course), great little snack bar is ok. Nice selection of beers (bottled, canned, and even a few on tap). Pitchers are also offered (lest they used to be at least). Staff have done a great job in keeping those course running along with Sligo Creek Golf Association (SCGC) and Friends of Sligo Creek to bring the First Tee to the course along with the live music concerts on Fridays (more info on both of those things available else ware...i.e. Google). This is my favorite walkable 9 hole course in the DC area. You can use all of your clubs here, or focus just on your irons and short game. Excellent tune up course before you hit a larger courses over the weekend. Staff is great, friendly. Last year or so, the condition of the fairways and rough have been much improved. Several of the greens can be hit with a good drive. But balls can be easily lost if you don't hit very straight. Great course to teach new golfers. And there's a decent spot to grab a burger and beer afterward. read more

The course is affordable and staff is professional and friendly. Unfortunately, I witnessed what appeared to be a regular member (he was smoking cigars, drinking and chatting with all the wait staff) scream at an Asian family and mock their English. I reported the incident to the manager the next morning who handled it professionally and with concern. However it is concerning if there are regular members that are abusive and in good conscience to golfers that may be subject to such behavior, I felt it was important to post the review. read more

Very easy and short nine-hole course that is one of the Montgomery Country golf courses. Longest hole is 414 yds from the back tees (#9). The last four holes are trick holes. 6 and 9 have a creek across the fairway about 210-220 yds out, however if you lay up with more than a 7 or 8 iron, the extremely down sloping fairway will still put you in the creek. 7 and 9 are doglegs such that unless you drive at least 250 yds, you can't get around the heavily wooded bend and reach the green in two. Rest are straightforward and very easy. Course is in very good condition, has friendly staff in clubhouse, and is inexpensive. It was uncrowded (played by myself) on midweek afternoon. This course is a public course and is in a public park. It is not well maintained, it's very much a crowded course. Good for beginners. You can call or book online for a T time. You can also just walk on the green. They have golf carts to drive. There is also soccer golf holes located on the green the same as the golfing greens. It is quite annoying especially if you have a group of kids playing soccer golf and you're waiting for them to finish before you can hit your balls. It's a course to come and play whenever you want but it's nothing to rave about. I would rather go to Willow Springs in Sykesville- it is nicer. read more

Well, until I came here I thought the only decent thing connected with Sligo was W.B. Yeats. This is a great spot. Montgomery County Golf do a lot of good work - and this 9 hole course nestled under the beltway in Silver Spring is a fabulous spot if you want to slip out of work early (not that I would ever do that) and get 9 holes in. Heck go round twice and get in 18. They have carts, but it is easily walkable, and at $19 for 9 holes it's a bargain - and ideal for junior golfers if you have any. If you have more time and can handle the traffic head to Langston in Anacostia - but when you want to get in a "quickie" this is the spot. Just one thing- they do not have water on the course so bring a bottle with you if it is hot. read more

Come out to Sligo Golf Course and play one of the newest sports in town - Footgolf! Footgolf Basics: Footgolf is a combination of soccer and golf. The sport can be played individually or with a group of people, as each player makes plays with their own soccer ball. Similar to golf, plays begin when kicking the ball from the tee box towards the designated hole. The ball continues to be kicked towards the hole, until it lands in the hole. The goal of the game is to get the ball into the hole with the fewest kicks possible, and to remain under par. After repeating these actions from hole to hole throughout the course, the player with the lowest score wins. The Course Experience: Sligo Golf Course is nestled near busy I-495, a residential area, and Sligo Creek Park. The course has nine holes for golf, and 18 holes for footgolf. Ranges from tee to hole for footgolf are significantly shortly than for golf, and plays are made in the rough, fairway, and putting green. The grass landscaping was kept up, but I cannot say the grounds were pristine. The course has plenty of basic obstacles - hills, trees, water, and bunkers. The average par for footgolf was four. We opted to drive around the course with a golf cart. That proved to be unnecessary (it caused us to run around even more) as we still had to follow the soccer balls when kicking them throughout the course, then go back from the tee area to fetch our golf cart and take it to the next fareway. Once a soccer ball landed in a hole, the tee box for the next hole was usually a few steps away. Footgolf shares the course alongside regular golfers, so we needed to remain aware of the golfers around us, and had to wait our turn to play at some of the tee boxes. The Staff Experience: The staff was very friendly, and quickly accommodated my group of four friends upon arrival. We were provided thorough instructions on playing the golf course. The soccer balls provided to us were properly inflated. We decided to rent a golf cart, and plenty of instructions were provided about using it on the golf course, even the option not to use it. We were able to pack the cart with a picnic dinner and non-alcoholic drinks. As we played into dusk, and were some of the last people on the course for the day, a staff member came around a few times to keep us posted on the timing and completion of play before dark. Once finished, we were greeted by staff inquiring about our experience, and equipment was swiftly returned. Footgolf ended up being a positive experience for us four newbies. Our sneakered, yet unseasoned toes were sore from kicking the soccer ball so many times, but the weather was perfect, and Sligo Golf Course was an ideal spot to relax and run around after a long day. Weekday prices were under $20 a person. Allow at least three hours of daylight time in order to finish the course. I think we'll be doing this again, and would come back to Sligo Golf Course. read more

Surprisingly, this is one of the nicer experiences I've had on 9's in the DMV area. First off, the prices and tee times for weekends are great. About 2 days before we went online to reserve a tee time, and almost every conceivable time was available for Saturday morning and the prices were the same (which was nice). $24 per person to walk the 9 hole course. We showed up at 7:10 for our 7:45am tee time, and it was a pretty steady flow of traffic, mostly senior, women, and beginners. Two things, 1) its a bit hard to find based on google maps but only 30 mins from Arlington, so its easy to get there, and 2) morning tee times = no morning food served. But, the coffee is free =). Tee'd off at 7:40 with my 2 buddies and a fourth we picked up. First hole is actually sort of nerve racking b/c the tee off is RIGHT IN FRONT of the club house, where everyone is queued up. But, straight shot, so its not too much pressure. The course is well maintained, really nice greens and fairways, and a GREAT course to walk. No uphill or downhill, mostly flat, nice pathways. A cart is almost a waste here. The holes are challenging (for me as a beginner) but nothing crazy (maybe except for the last hole which is a dog leg right). The blue tees are all about 150-350 yds, so you don't have to play with drivers if you aren't ready (I hit my 3-wood mostly on long holes). Overall, a really fun place to play 9, and the rate of play is perfect for beginners but not too slow for advanced players. I played with 2 buddies that are low/mid 80's to low 90s players and they had a lot of fun and enjoyed it. SOLID. LEGIT. read more

Great course for beginners, but for those that can hit 250+ off the tee, expect long waits for the group in front to finish. For low handicappers the par 4s almost play like par 3s. No par 5s on the course. I'd say #9 is the most fun hole on the course- dog leg right with a chance to drive the green if you can carry over trees ~240 from the tips. One of the ladies working the club house on weekday afternoons can be not the nicest depending on her mood, and she forces you to join another group even if the course is completely empty. read more

I do not normally find myself enjoying the time I spend at this course for the down right cleanliness of the facilities or due to their amazing course upkeep because all around it seems to be lacking. I am Usually finding myself there because its location to where I live and how warm and down to earth the staff seem to be. This past visit I was lead to start believing differently after being verbally accosted by one of the staff members who wrongfully assumed I was under age and drinking. We were not a rowdy group and we were also accused of and informed against banging on the golf cart which never occurred. I'm not sure if he was just having a bad day and throwing up the act because we were a younger group and I was in the line of fire but I will not be returning to this for that reason at least for a while. Hello, I'm a beginner golfer and I have been to some of the golf courses in/around the DC area and this is by far my favorite 9-Hole golf course (I am not comparing this to 18-hole courses as that wouldn't be fair). Additionally, the fact that its so close to where I live makes it all the more better. This course has many Par 4s that will even challenge the more advance players and has a couple of dog legs and hazards to make players think twice before hitting. There is a marshal that drives around to make sure golfers ahead of you keep up with the pace on the weekends as it can be crowded. Several ball cleaning stations and Porta-Potties throughout the course just in case you need to use them. No need to rent out a golf cart as it is walk friendly and well treed if you want to stand in the shade. Early in the morning and late evening you might even get a glimpse of the local wildlife. Holes 1, 2 and 3 are great warm-up holes. I enjoyed Hole 4, 7, 8 and 9 the most. Watch out for the bunkers on 1, 3, 6 and 8. In the late afternoon/early evening the sun can shine right in your eyes on Holes 5, 7, and 9. Ask about the shaft stuck in the tree left of the tee-off point on Hole 8. The food there hits the spot after a day on the course. And they have daily specials that are spot on. Beer wise, mostly domestic on draft but has some imports in bottles/can. There is also a golf shop. There is a net (no driving range) that you can hit into which really helps you warming up or just for practice. In addition to that there is a couple of practice putting areas. I think both are free but don't quote me on that. Overall this course has a lot of personality that will leave you smiling and keep you coming back. And for the price, its a bargain. John read more

If you're looking for a quick 9, then this is one of the places to go. Very short golf course with no par 5s and several drivable par 4s. The fairways are a little shaggy all year, and they punched the greens as of March 21st (a LOT of sand on each green). But overall it's a fun track for those starting out, going with smaller children, wanting a quick round, or looking for something cheaper than anywhere else. The snack bar and clubhouse are minimal but everyone who works there seems really nice. Good location, minutes from the Beltway and from downtown Silver Spring. All around a place I come to once or twice a year. read more

Sligo is a nine hole Par 34 public golf course located on the outer part of Montgomery County Maryland. The course has an interesting layout with a mixture of short and long par 3 and par 4 holes. As part of the Montgomery County 9 Public Golf Courses, I was really surprised by Sligo's overall poor conditions. The course has not been properly maintained as weeds and grassless patches are starting to take over the fairways. The speed of the greens varied from hole to hole. Making consisting putting impossible! The bunkers are in pretty good condition but the goal is to avoid them if at all possible. Even though, I had some really good iron shots, I found it impossible to get excited about my round at Sligo Golf Course because of the course conditions. After finishing my round in about 1.5 hours I was compelled to but decided against asking for a refund!! read more

This was a surprisingly nice course. It is only 9 holes but the prices are not that expensive during the morning hours on weekdays. In hindsight you can play a full 18 holes during twilight hours during weekdays at places like Laytonsville and Needwood for a similar price ($25). The 9 holes offer risk/reward challenges especially on the 9th hole where water is in play. A solid 9 hole course that moves quickly. Would recommend for a quick game to get some holes in. read more

This course is a bit of a secret amongst locals. Super-convenient if you live in the SS area, and the greens fees are VERY reasonable. Perfect for a mid-week outing after work. Always in good shape with some challenging spots as well. read more
