I played Hampshire Greens this past Saturday for the first time and throughly enjoyed it! I had a twilight tee time (5pm) and only paid $37 for 18 holes + cart! The driving range is $7 for a bucket of 40 balls. There aren't any covered bays and they don't have TopTracer tech, but has everything else you need to practice every club in your bag. I was hitting off a mat this particular day, but they do have turf that wasn't available when I went. The course itself is beautiful and blends in perfectly with the surrounding woodlands and neighborhood. While the hole distances might look intimidating, most of the holes had wide fairways creating a pretty forgiving round for most handicaps. I'm not sure what things look like during busy hours, but for a Saturday with nice weather the pace of play was the best I've seen in the region in a while! At no time did we feel rushed or that the groups in head of us were taking too long. The staff were great! Everyone from the Starter to the Cook were friendly and helpful, so no complaints in that regard. Food price was about on par with other muni's in the area - $11 for a beer and a hotdog. 5/5 experience and will definitely be back for another twilight round before the season is over. read more

Played Hampshire green on a warmer day, we had a good time, back 9 is a bit challenging for a beginner golfer. Will keep visiting, could be maintained a bit better on certain holes, but worth the dollar to get away for 5 hrs. read more

Played Hampshire Greens this past weekend and for being a warmer day in December, every time slot was booked for the morning. Grabbed some Bud Lights from the kitchen and they just gave us the box, which was pretty convenient. The guy that checked us in was pretty nice and got us situated quickly. Once we were in our cart, we were off to the starter that broke down the pin placements, told us that the greens were moving quickly and to have some fun. The timing worked out perfect because the group ahead of us was moving at a solid pace and there was no waiting! We even got to spend some time walking around the dry ravines find a great amount of Pro V1's and other various golf balls. Think I left with about 20 of them. Most the fairways felt open and for $70 something, I can't complain too much. For $6 on a Saturday you can get a chili dog, chips, and a fountain drink. That was a pretty great bargain for us, I just ate the chili dog a bit too fast and that weighed on me. I would absolutely come back for the clean fairway and greens and of course a great time. read more

I'm a Montgomery County Eagle package member. I play all the courses I come over here an hour and 15 minutes before my teatime. It takes 40 minutes to make a BLT and I had to cancel my teatime. read more

Played Hampshire Greens GC on 9/12/19 with my dad and older brother for the first time in over a year. We teed off at 7:50 and finished just before noon, no complaints with pace of play. While observing the course, I noticed that the conditions are still pretty good and they force carry on 18 is still challenging. I remember when they used to have water on 18 but now its overgrown fescue. Also, I appreciate the new gas carts compared to the previous electric ones. My wife and son met me on #7 to ride along, they too had a good time. Def. recommend trying out this course . read more

If you love 5+ hour rounds (on a weekday), with no marshall in sight.....rock hard greens....pin placements less than 9 feet from the edge of the green....the driving range being closed AFTER calling the night before and being told it would be open....a shop attendant who defaults to being defensive and offering ZERO apologies and any "compensation" ....and paying $53 for this awesome time....then this is the place for you!!!! Not too long of a course, but a good test of golf acumen. Hampshire Greens is my personal favorite, amongst all of the Montgomery County courses. The course is not the course for you if you have trouble skulling your shots, as there always seems to be danger lurking in front of the greens and off of the tee. While the course doesn't play too long, it will test your ability to carry specific distances and place the ball in particular spots to have a good angle to the green. This can be a bombers paradise, as long as you can place your drive. For example, Hole #16 is a short par 4. When you step up to the tee, you will see a pair of bunkers out to the left and the fairway will meander to the right near the green. You are going to be tempted to hit a driver and maybe go for the green. However, if you push your drive to the right, there are large hills with some severe side hill lies, plus you may not be able to see the green from there. The play is to hit a long to mid-iron out at the bunkers, you will be rewarded with a perfect wedge to an open and inviting green, all because you played smart. Hampshire Greens is the epitomization of a thinking man's course, and like other reviewers have said, you can't go wrong with taking an extra club, as many of the holes play uphill. Plus many of the holes have multiple tiers, so distance control is at a premium. It is a very enjoyable course to play with one exception, pace of play. I've played here a few times and I'm not sure if it is the cost (which is reasonable) or the area, but it has been ridiculous. Hasn't anyone heard of ready golf? And there haven't been marshals out to move it along. Let me tell you a horror story. I played in June on a Monday morning as part of a two-some. We were joined up with another twosome and sent out after a group of 8 men and women (2 foursomes). Well by the third hole, we were stranded, because our playing partners took 5 practice swings for every real swing and they played from the blues. Did I mention they shouldn't??? 5 and a half hours later we walked off #18. Five and a half hours on a Monday morning, sweet Moses! Anyway, that episode has deterred me from playing more at Hampshire Greens, and I'm not sure I could sit through playing on a weekend at an even slower pace! read more

Every time I come here at the beginning of the year I enjoy this place, but as I come back over the year there less to like. Decent but small putting green. The driving range is a ways from the clubhouse and on the way to the first tee. Only problem? The starter is at the clubhouse. The range is big and has good targets, and they do have grass tees. But be prepared to just see the pristine grass from above; it's never open. The golf course is usually in good shape, but there are long drives in the cart between holes. Houses line every hole as well. Also any player will need a high ball flight to score well here. Lots of elevated greens on the par 4s and some par 5s. Also make sure you call ahead to see when they aerated the greens. We paid full price and the greens were in horrible shape; they had punched the greens a week before and there was little to no healing. They punch huge holes and fill them with sand, not very playable. The people there are nice at least. read more

Only went to driving range and had a bite, on a Thursday evening. Driving range is medium size, not long, but enough to warm up. Course was not crowded. Clubhouse is nice and clean, and staff is super friendly. You must meet Janet at the food area and have her daily specials, she is super - and the ham bean soup was tops! read more

Nice point by the other reviewer who noted that it's good practice to take an extra club into many of the greens. Part of the fun and the challenge of Hampshire Greens is that its not just a flat, you-can-duff-it-and-still-get-on type of course. A lot of the approach shots are uphill that demand carry because of the bunkering. HG is shorter than Northwest Park, but with much more slope and a more imaginative design. I personally really like this course i think its fun, has some great risk-reward holes and is a really good layout. You can score on some of the holes yet the Par 5s are pretty challenging. Also a couple demanding tee shots and a few longish Par 3s. The price is ok, not a great deal but certainly reasonable especially during the week. One knock (personal preference) is that this course really is not walkable. Too many long drives between tee and green. It's also got a few holes hemmed in by houses, but thankfully not the entire course. I also don't think there's a single hole next to another, its a very stretched out layout. A step up, certainly, from Northwest Park (hence the price) but worth it for the challenge and the layout. read more

I disagree with many of the reviews here. This is not a "typical muni" course. It's a bit shorter from the tips than most courses built this recently (1999) but there are a few longer holes (like 2 and 13) and there's plenty of forced carries and elevation changes that make it challenging. The price is a little higher than most munis but the conditions are better too. And they often have decent twilight and online deals. This course is not really walkable (queue the USGA Walking Golfer's credo - "It is my firm belief that walking is an integral part of the game...") . I always walk it but I'm inevitably playing with someone in a cart who can ferry me between many of the greens and tees. The course also does play slowly - it's too hard for most of the golfers that play it. Still, I'm sticking with 4 stars for it because it's a noted upgrade to the rest of Montgomery County's muni courses. Northwest Park does stand out, but only because it's really long for a muni. read more

Nice course and conditions are always pretty solid. HOWEVER, pace of play is ridiculous. It's a combination of poor management by the starter, lack of etiquette from the players and also the routing of the course itself. You can play a two hour front 9 and then get backed up on the back 9 for three hours! That's mid-week! How do 4 groups get stacked up at the turn on the 10th hole? It's comical. No enforcement for bad pace of play whatsoever. It's maddening. The inside staff is nice enough but it doesn't make up for the fact that the pace of play is not being managed properly. Putting up simple signs on all the par three's that simply state "please allow groups behind you to hit up" used to be standard. What happened to that courtesy in the game of golf? That gesture alone would save 20 minutes on a round of golf. There are more signs on the golf course dictating where you cant go and what not to do versus simple tips to speed up play. How nice would that be? Subconscious lessons and etiquette. Every teebox should have a sign with one rule of etiquette that people have to stare at when they hit their shots. No wonder the game is dying. No Mas! read more

With many forced carries from the tee, narrow fairways, tall grass areas, high sloping bunkers protecting small greens, this is the most challenging course in the Montgomery County Golf Course system. Nice course but staff are lame. I booked a round for me and a buddy. I told him I was paying for just me and he charged me for both of us, which I didn't notice until later. He also forgot to give me the token for the range. At the range, there are no signs telling me not to hit off the grass area that looks to me like that's what it's for. Two guys came by and yelled at me to get off. I had hit a few loose balls others had left down there because they were right in front of me and took a few back up with me, which they apparently saw me do. Two minutes later, the marshall comes over and gives me grief about that, which on one hand I sort of get, but at the same time, get a life. For the rest of the time at the range, the other two guys came by every five minutes, blatantly checking up on me like I was a criminal (no one else was there). They also drove right out into the range while I was hitting balls, for no reason - they just did a lap without ever stopping. During my round, another guy followed me and the others we were paired with for several holes, not even being subtle about it. The guy just sat there on his tractor thing, even doing it right next to the green while we putted. I wanted to ask him "Is there something we can do for you?" The course was great but they should fire the staff. read more

I played this course last year and it was in decent shape. Not totally memorable, other than a par 4 with a long carry to nearly perpendicular fairways that totally screwed me up. There are a few too many houses on this course, including Juan Dixon's, but they don't really come into play. read more

The stars are a direct reflection of the Maryland Muni courses. Hampshire is one of the top 2 muni's in MoCo. The other being little Bennett. Obviously Congressional, PB Dye, Whiskey Creek, and the other non muni's are better overall. This course is in fantastic shape, well maintained and in a beautiful area. It's challenging and very well designed. Weekend prices are a little steep but weekday prices are a great deal. If you haven't played this course yet, you better it's great! read more

This use to be a really nice course. Not anymore. Crab grass growing on the greens and the course is very beat up. Weeds are popping up everywhere. Not sure how they get away w/ charging $82 on weekends plus $5 for range balls. Looks like it's slowly turning into Redgate. I won't be going back there. read more

This place definitely has one of the better designs in my opinion and is probably my favorite Montgomery County Golf Course. It has good length, challenging but not too difficult. The holes are spread out so it's extremely peaceful. Usually, the only people you'll see are the people in front of you or behind you, as 9 and 10 are the only holes that are adjacent. Since it's a neighborhood course, every now and they you might encounter kids running around screaming during your back swing but I've learned that a few errant balls will put them back in they're place (only kidding of course...). read more

Great course. The key is to understand when to play so as to get the best possible value. Head over on an afternoon Monday through Thursday and you will get one of the best values in the area. What makes this course interesting is the elevation changes and the heavily guarded greens. Fairways and greens tend to be in good shape. read more

over the course of a golf season, my friends and i will play here about three times. it has the typical traits that we look for in a golf scorecard. from the tips, its 6815 yards with a rating/slope of 73/131. if you like elevated greens, this is your course. i find it helpful to always hit an extra club to get it to green level. the hard part is sticking it especially when the flag is up front. if you come up short, not only will you have a blind chip, but you have to worry about the numerous bunkers guarding the front and back of the hole. while at first its fun, it gets rather tiresome to see the same approach shot again and again. aside from the monotonous elevated greens, the greens itself are slow and inconsistent when it comes to true roll. sometimes it breaks, sometimes it dont. montgomerycountygolf.com offers some deals that entices us. for about $45 in 2008, they offered range balls, free lunch, and free replay. sounds good right? to squeeze in a double round you need to start at 8am at the latest. trouble is, the staff gets there late... everytime we played there. that means the range is not set up, the crew is following us green to green for maintenence, and replay is based on availability so its not gauranteed. you may finish the first round and lunch at 1pm, then they tell you that the replay is available at 5pm. stick around here for 4 hrs and play 14 holes? but they get us with this deal 3 times a year!!! basically, you paid for 18 holes and lunch for $45. not bad, albeit, the greens could be better. i'll give it 3 stars because even if they had the range ready and a free 2nd round, the course is still mediocre. read more

Solid course. But if you play on a weekday in morning beware of grounds crew. No grounds crew etiquette. Had my ball 10 ft off green and crew member ran over my ball with reel mower, sawed it in half and 50 yards back towards tee box. I confronted him and he didn't speak word of English and shrugged his shoulders an acted like he knew he hit my ball and didn't give a lick. Not to mention my buddy and I found at least 25 golf balls shredded around course. Complained and front desk person said "oh let me get you another ball". Are you serious?!?!? I'd had been more happier with a complimentary hot dog. They're lucky I still made par on hole or I'd been even more pissed. read more

It's a shame because I've played this course many times and always enjoy, but at $85 its just too expensive to justify it anymore. When it was $60-70 it was the best layout for the buck in the area. They charge more than Blue Mash now and almost as much as Laurel Hills and other clearly superior courses. Guess its back to Enterprise and Glen Dale for me. read more
