    Food & Beverage Menu 1/2 - March 2020 - VN
    Vince N.

One of my friends always mentioned a bar named 'Poni' that she frequents. Not being a fan of typical Korean bars where a $20 drink buys you company, I was happy to know that Poni isn't that kind of establishment. ATMOSPHERE: Poni is located in the same row of businesses in Puuone Plaza that includes Tokyo Tei and M Sushi. The bar is split into two rooms though the lower room is more of a storage area and where the women's restroom is located. Décor is minimal and the place was clean. Seating styles include bar top, high tops, low tops and picnic-style tables. Color-changing LED rope lights span the ceiling which gives the place a dreamscape-like ambiance in hues of pink, blue and purple, so pictures will come out horribly (see my menu pics). TV's line the bar and pay-for karaoke is available ($1 per song or $2 if no one claps, according to the sign, LOL). There were just four others there on a Friday night around 7pm, with a few souls trickling in thereafter. Reggae tunes played overhead. MENU: Full bar along with a small menu of Asian-influenced bar apps, local fare like saimin, spam and egg sandwich, and oyster shooters. EXPERIENCE: My gang and I were going to attend a funeral nearby so we decided to pop in and have just one drink. Our two chardonnays and one beer came out to $18 and change. Paying via credit card would result in the fee being passed onto us (75-cents for this particular amount). Conversing was easy as the music was at the perfect level. The bar was nice and cool inside. SERVICE: Greeting was immediate and very friendly. We were a party of just three so the server broke down an 8-topper in half for us. Drink service was lightning quick as the place wasn't very busy at 7pm. OVERALL: Chill vibe, great service. I'd return!

Great vibes! Delicious drinks. Wonderful bartenders and servers. Karaoke too! For seating inside, there are a couple of stand up tables, a couple of booths, and a few tables for small groups plus the bar seating :) Awesome place and can't wait to come back already! Find Poni near Tokyo Tei. Plenty free parking in the area.

The outdoor seating is refreshingly simple, but once you step inside, it's pure vibe. There's a thoughtful design touch to everything--from the mid-century glassware to the way each drink seems to have its own personality. They're not just slinging cocktails here; they're crafting an experience. I ordered the VOG CUTTER--Pisco, watermelon, lemon, absinthe, cubeb bitters--and it came topped with a pickled watermelon garnish. I'm usually not an absinthe fan, but this drink was perfectly balanced, bright and herbal with just enough edge. It landed squarely in the "perfect cocktail" category for me. My partner had the Velvet Elvis and was equally impressed. We both kept commenting on how varied and intentional the drinkware was--punch cups, tea glasses, you name it. It makes everything feel more special. The bartender was sharp, friendly, and clearly knew the menu inside and out--eager to help guide us through the options and talk about the thought behind each drink. At one point, a child wandered in by mistake (Esters is 21+ due to its bar zoning), and the bartender gently asked them to leave--but not before handing over a vanilla wafer as a parting gift. One of my favorite touches? The name. There's actually a thoughtful explanation printed right on the menu: "Esters are natural compounds that are created through chemical reactions during fermentation. Esters give a diverse range of aromas and flavors to rum." It's a subtle homage to the science of spirits--and it fits perfectly with the experience Esters delivers. If you're looking for a cocktail bar that hits on every level--drinks, vibe, service--Esters Fair Prospect is the move.

Best way to find a local gem! No one greeted us as we arrived at 2pm, offered menus, anything. We sat ourselves, ordered beers at the bar. Great beer selection. Found out after looking online that they had food and happy hour from 3-5pm. No problem, just don't expect a tip. Menu changes regularly based on old photos. We tried the roasted eggplant for $15, and waited until HH to get $2 off the smashburger. While the latter was quite good, the eggplant dish was standout unique and tasty. The sauce in which it was served harkened to African spicy peanut marinade, excellent match with the perfectly roasted eggplant. Wonderful salubrious surprise that will be recreated at home. I asked a fellow clearing plates the inspiration for this dish, he said he'd ask the chef but never got back to us. With all of 3 tables to concern himself with... Great food, nice chill vibe, distant DIY service. Worth a return visit.

I'm glad we listened. We sat at the bar for quick service. The service was fast and super friendly. I ordered the Smash Burger with bacon and an order of garlic fries. Everything is a la carte so if you want fries, just know they do not come with the burger. Everything was delicious. The Smash Burger was perfectly cooked, seasoned wonderfully, and so juicy! The burger also had some spice to it! It had some pickled jalapenos on it and they added the perfect heat. I loved it. The garlic fries were perfectly fried and crispy and had a great garlic flavor and kick. I will definitely come back here on my next visit to island.

The restaurant is located at the shopping center where the Maui Ocean Center is. There is plenty of parking. It has great views of the harbor as well as air conditioned inside seating, and a very clean private bathroom. We spend a lot of time here and have watched restaurants not last quite frankly because they have a hard time staying consistent. It took us a couple of visits to give this place a try and we are bummed that we waited, because it is SO GOOD! Our server, Riley, was super friendly and offered us his suggestions, which we took. We started with the crispy kanpachi toll. Then tried the special (uku), the scallops, a salad and cioppino. Everything was so fresh and perfectly cooked. The mash was perfect with whatever sauce the scallops had. We topped it off with two desserts because we couldn't make up our minds. The chocolate cake was okay - we opted for no caramel so maybe that was the missing piece, the cookie in the cast iron skillet was SO GOOD. Gooey, and perfect with the mac nut ice cream. Kudos guys, please keep it up! If you're on Maui, definitely give them a try!

Honestly, the bartender needs anger management classes or maybe just a different career altogether, because customer service clearly isn't for her. The hostesses fake smile upon entering could be better, we mistakenly gave her the wrong amount in our party and apologized, she sat us at a 4 top at first, until I asked her to be moved to a bigger table with at least one more seat for a child, I apologized again. Her tone and demeanor were trash. Mind you we got to the restaurant at 4, there were 5 tables dining outside. Our waitress I think Alyssa? was her name hadn't introduced herself yet just kept reminding us she'd be right with us so cool, fine. She seemed to be taking care of more tables than she could handle alone. By the time she came to us to take our drink orders it was 4:40, she reminded us about happy hour which ended at 5 so twenty minutes for us to get a margarita or two in before it ended. Although drinks took longer than usual. We had to bother her at 4:59 to put in our last happy hour drinks. The margaritas were inconsistent bc the second round for me was stronger than the first the opposite for my friends who ordered a different flavor. The coconut heaven wasn't very good for an $18 cocktail. Food wise, their crostinis for the appetizers were stale and the braised short ribs my friend ordered was dried out on the outside and a bit gamey, which was unfortunate. Our steaks, the salmon and the risotto were a hit. Just to get to the dessert portion of our meal and to get another drink we waited 20 minutes for our server to come back, I had to step outside, sure enough our server is at the hostess stand leaning on it on a phone scrolling probably talking stories with the rude hostess. Server brought out the birthday dessert we sang hbd, she left and didn't take our dessert order until after almost 10 minutes. Birthday girl and I ordered a tres leches cake.. barely any leches it was dry just by looking at it, her and I agreed it tasted like pancakes with syrup. We were both disappointed, my friends ordered the brownie which the birthday girl tried and enjoyed most. Please don't get me wrong Alyssa was kind and friendly. The attentiveness to her guests is the issue. We spent most of our time waiting for her to return and check in on us. Also an FYI, for those thinking of visiting Fuegos. They charge a service fee. In your tab there is three different total amounts at the bottom. Your actual meal total then a cash payment amount vs a non-cash payment amount which is more. Unaware of what percentage the service fee is, they could be adding any amount they'd like for all we knew. No breakdown what-so-ever. If they intend to charge a service fee I believe it should be company policy that they notify guests as well as on their menus/website and by mouth from servers about this service fee. I understand it's common amongst businesses, but a simple notice would suffice. I asked the server about them and she said "it's not the tip, but a service fee we have, I'm sorry". It wouldn't have made us wonder why our bill could've been less instead of paying more. We know now IF we ever choose to come back.
