my first time at this diner on a thursday night and it was packed but i didn't wait long at all. the waitress may have been one of the best i have ever had. it was clear that she had been doing this for a long time and it made us all feel more comfortable. the menu is big; there are lots of options to choose from and there is something for everyone. the food is delicious but didn't blow me away. the onion rings are definitely worth it. the mac and cheese is less than and it seemed like boxed mac and cheese to me. without the exceptional service, i would rate this place 3 stars. read more

Consistency. If you are looking for a good meal at a fair price you've found the right place. Pompton queen has been doing it well for many years. The owners are actively involved and that's probably why it is such a great place. I'm always amazed how no matter what I order it comes out well. The menu is vast so everyone will find something they like. If you show up for dinner at 6 to 7 pm you will probably find a jammed lobby of people waiting to be seated. Don't get discouraged because the wait time is typically no more then 10 minutes and it's worth it. read more

I always go to this place late at night when I crave breakfast food or good ol disco fries. This time I went out with my friends and ordered a triple berry crepe. Triple berry crepes have sweet cream and frozen berries inside. Those were good, but the crepe itself wasn't good. It tasted like mushy thin bread, and the berries didnt taste too good either... but what can you do with frozen berries right? Another late nite dinner. This time our strategy was to share a dinner thus making room for appetizers and dessert. The fried calamari did not disappoint! Delicious! What's going on here? This used to be our favorite diner but the last 2 times that we went, we feel that it's gone downhill. They're doing never ending repairs. They've changed the menu which is now much shorter and missing many of the favorites that we've come to love. We used to love it here but we nOw have nO plans to go back in the future. If I could give no stars I would. The restaurant made 3 big mistakes. When it comes to customer service I was mortified. I ordered an entree, it came with a side salad. I told the waitress I couldn't have onion. Salad came and it was fantastic, the entree was FILLED with onion. I could not eat, waitress did not check in nor take note that the entree was untouched (mistake 1). Bus boy came, I explained to him I couldn't eat my dinner, it was never relayed to management nor the server (mistake 2). I go to pay, my bill is 26 dollars for a soup and salad along with an entree I did not touch. Before ringing me up the hostess didn't even bother to ask how everything was. She simply took it and ran my card, and then after ringing asked me (mistake 3). She did offer to make me something but I was in a time crunch and did not have time to wait for another meal. So if you go and your food and service is not to your satisfaction be prepared to be ignored. read more

The food itself here is great, the service is miserable. Today though when we stopped for lunch our plates had not been properly rinsed, leaving the food with a soapy taste - absolutely shocking and gross! I really want to like this place as it is closeby and easy to get to, but there always seems to be a problem like this, whether it's a nasty attitude from the host / hostess, neglect by the wait staff, wrong drinks, cold coffee and now the dishwashers can't get it right either! I had a very bad experience with this place . I only ate their once 2 summers ago . From the moment we came in , an elderly waitress who was getting my order was very condescending and I had to repeat my order a couple of times . After she gave us our food , she completely disappeared and when we are requesting a few items , it took her awhile - dragging her feet . One of your waiters actually picked up my bread with his hands!!! Who would do that????? He then put it back on my plate and told me it wasn't stale!!!! Are you kidding me????? Obviously there needs to be more training among your staff. When you take on a job serving the public they are paying you!!! You need to please them accommodate them, and give them the service they deserve. If your staff doesn't have patience then they shouldn't work there. In our case from the beginning our waiter had an attitude and demonstrated poor public relations. I would seriously look into this matter. I spoke up unlike many who won't and told the manager about the incident. I believe you need to get involved and speak to your waiters and waitresses about their attitude. We have been going here for years. The food is consistently good. Most of the waitstaff is excellent. At night time you will usually have to wait for a table, but I have to say they are always pretty good with quoting you and accurate wait time. read more

The service was great but we had a burger that tasted like grill char and the sweet potato fries and regular fries were not even room temp. Almost cold. Pompton Queen Diner is a great place to eat everything from breakfast to dinner! The service is always good and the food is the best diner food in the area. Pompton Queen also does catering. Their catering menu is varied and plentiful. The food is always ready to be picked up at the appointed time and it's always delicious. Tommy and Sam go out of their way to make sure you are a satisfied customer. While generally a good diner, they really blew it with the Beef Burgundy special on Wednesday night. The beef was ample and soft - well marinated. But the sauce was a joke. It was orange and not red. The dish never saw a bottle of burgundy. Maybe it was a Greek interpretation of beef burgundy but it was a poor interpretation. Sure, it had tiny onions as traditional preparation requires, but I think it also had garlic and other mysterious seasonings. Definitely an unpleasant surprise since it was a take out meal and the deviation was discovered only after I got it home and unwrapped it. The take out meal was sufficient in quantity for more than two - about 2-3 pounds of food I guess. But quantity can't forgive such a gross distortion of a traditional dish. read more

Ok, let me preface this review by saying the food and service are always on a 4-5 star level, no complaints there. HOWEVER, I was there today in the men's bathroom adjusting a contact lens in my eye when I witnessed a PQD employee (he's a server, about 5'7", black hair, facial hair, about 185lbs, was wearing his PQD shirt, was ON duty, as when he exited the men's room went straight to a a POS terminal and then to a table to take an order) come out of a stall, where (obviously from the odor and time he was in there) he was defecating, go to the sink and LITERALLY dribble some water on his ONE hand (other hand was occupied by his phone, which he was talking on from the time I entered the bathroom, while he was in the stall, until the time we both left together), rub his two fingers together and then dry his fingers with a paper towel. I was staring at him the whole time with a "WTF?" look on my face and couldn't believe he didn't notice me. I will ask for another server if this guy is ever assigned to my table. read more

So I love me a good diner. and where else in the country to go for good diner food other than NJ - the Garden State. I love this place. The service is excellent. My family and I have been eating at this diner for years. On this specific time, I was eating with my family and while we were eating we were interrupted by a conversation with a busboy and table of young adults next to us. One of them pulled the blinds down to prevent sun from being in his eyes, since it was an extremely bright morning. After he did that, an older busboy went over to him and starting reprimanding him as if he was a child. I was absolutely disgusted, hearing this conversation as the young man did not know the blinds were automatic. Being said, if the restaurant did not want customers to touch the blinds, PUT UP A SIGN! The young man did not deserve that treatment, as he was clearly embarrassed and was trying to have a nice breakfast with his friends. The busboy was ignorant, rude, conceded and overall nasty. The young man apologized, but the busboy kept on running his mouth, saying how he broke the blinds and how he should be responsible for his actions. AND, even worse, my family and I also overheard one of the hostesses talking to customers about what the young man accidentally did, which was unnecessary and overall rude. I felt so bad for the young man, but he handled the situation well and should NOT have been treated that way. Last night after running a few errands we were either going to stop here or the Monarch diner (formally the Matthews), and when I said the queen to my husband he was kina like ehhhhhh.....but we came here anyway. We should have gone the other way. We walk in, it's moderately busy but we were seated right away. The waitress was on us immediately took our drink orders and gave us menus....brought out drinks-then she was gone for 10 minutes. 10 minutes may not seem like a lot but when you're sitting staring at eachother and you're hungry and all the waitresses are huddled in a corner and our menus are closed...it feels like an eternity. I started clocking it and if she hadn't come back when she did we were about to walk out. We ordered our food, I had the chicken kebab, and my husband had a chicken avocado sandwich with sweet potato fries. Our food took about 15 minutes to come out....again felt like a long time when you're talking 8pm on a Wednesday at a diner but whatever. Food finally comes out and it does look delicious....I wish I had taken a picture tho because as delicious as my food was it was absurdly over priced IMO. I received 1 kebab, probably a total of about 3 ounces of chicken woven between peppers and onions over a huge bed of rice. His sandwich did look awesome, it almost looked like they had round cuts of bacon rather than strips which is cool. The fries were absolutely perfect--didn't even need seasoning and not the typical mushy sweet tater fries a lot of places are serving. We dove right in and started eating. My kebab was fantastic, it had a little kick of tang from what I assume is some kind of greek seasoning, maybe a yogurt marinade, the veggies were sliced nice and thin so it wasn't like giant piece of uncooked raw pepper and onion--really really good. They put a big stewed tomato on my plate which i didn't touch, but also these 2 little mushrooms, I think they were just button mushrooms, perhaps baby bellas but idk what they were cooked with/or how but they were amazing. They could have given me an entire kebab or those mushrooms and I would have been happy. I barely touched the rice but it was typical buttery delicious rice you'd expect. Waitress comes back around and we ask for a box and the check in one shot...no more foolin around we were ready to go home. The bill for 2 sodas and our dinners was $33. I'm not a cheap ass and I'll gladly pay for a good meal but I felt like this was very overpriced for A) the portions and B) diner food. It wasn't like we ordered 2 giant seafood or steak dishes. But whatever...paid the bill and left. We used to frequent the Queen a lot back in the day when we lived in Lincoln Park, then eventually switched to the Matthews because it was usually less crowded. The menu at the Queen is pretty impressive, they do have a wide array of different dishes and interesting twists on typical diner fare. This is a popular location. The waits can be a long time but they're very worth it. The chili is excellent, the burgers are amazing, and the breakfast is awesome.
