This is one of my husband's favorite places to dine due to its sports bar ambiance. The servers are great and attentive. This time we tried the chicken sandwich which could have used a little more chicken. The shrimp appetizer is delicious but too too spicy! The shrimp quesadillas were delicious. I visited Blu Alehouse and appreciated the open space. There's a ton of available seating as well as an open bar area with lots of draft choices. The team there at Blu Alehouse accommodated my large group by having a dedicated space for us in the back of the restaurant and even allowed us to change our reservation an hour before we were set to arrive. This place needs to be inspected by the health department. Not only were the 8 wings not fully cooked, the second time they brought them out there were only 5 wings on the plate. There's an old adage that goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." From a patron's point of view, Blu Alehouse wasn't broken. Yet, they seemed to see a need to fix it. The new floor layout, while attractive, does little for servers, who now need to navigate more steps to do their jobs, around banquettes. What we found most challenging were the changes to the menu, which included elimination of the mussels mariniere. Despite managers' explanations, none of the reasons held water. We see the menu moving more in the direction of diner fare (chicken parm, burgers, Flatbread pizzas) and away from dishes that made Blu unique. BTW, Blu added sushi, which is available at a buffet about 100 yd away. We love seafood - specifically mussels (which made us regulars at Blu). We may stop in for a drink now and again, but probably not for lunch or dinner. Last point. The live music was so loud ( Single guitarist with amps up all the way) it was like being at a wedding reception where you had to shout to be heard by your dining partners. read more

***2 1/2 stars*** It doesn't matter how good the food is; if the intangibles aren't there, it's not going to be a very positive experience. My noble chum and I had one of the most uneven meals in recent memory on Friday night. All of the food was excellent, but the drinks were mediocre and the service was worse than that. As a result, we walked out of there pretty disappointed that Blu Alehouse couldn't get out of its own way. We stopped by for an impromptu dinner/drinks around 7pm. It SEEMED really busy; my chum got there first and had to look around for parking, but there were also a lot of empty tables inside. After the fact, we still have no idea if this place was legitimately crowded or not. My chum secured outdoor seating, which I have to say is one of the better such spaces I've seen - the tables are high quality, spacious and comfortable. This was probably a COVID add-on they kept, and rightfully so. I've been inside as well, which I'd also categorize pretty much the same way. Can't go wrong, but for a warm June evening, I'll take the outdoor area every time. The minute I sat down, the service was already a bit of a red flag. My chum was mildly annoyed because the waiter stopped by before she'd had a chance to look at any of the menus and according to her, had a bit of an attitude when she only ordered waters to start. I didn't see the exchange but based on her recounting and my own experience with the waiter, I actually think whatever happened was an awkward attempt at humor. But he only brought back one water and I didn't actually end up getting MY water despite multiple requests until we were almost at dessert. I was very hydrated coming in, which helped, but little issues like that were a theme of this meal and for sure added up. I wasn't insanely hungry so we ended up splitting a couple of apps (which ended up being the equivalent of a giant entrée anyway) - the pork dumplings, tuna tartar, mac bites and Blu island shrimp. If everything here was as good as this food, they'd have no problem securing their place as one of the best upper tier mini chains in the area. Every single app was excellent. The pork dumplings were juicy and flavorful, the tuna tartar was fresh and smooth, and the shrimp ended up being a good complement to everything, on the sweeter side but still delicious. The star of stars for me was the mac bites, which were right up there with the mac and cheese balls at Cheesecake Factory (I promise that's a compliment). I'm not sure what type of cheese they're using, but it tasted like there were at least two, and one of them was pretty zesty. Just fantastic. But Blu Alehouse insisted on shooting itself in the foot. The apps came fairly quickly, but we had no silverware to actually eat the food, and this isn't a place where nearby empty tables had the rolled up knives/forks on the table to grab. Our waiter didn't show up for almost 10 minutes after the apps arrived, so we just had this great food basically staring at us, cooling off. The mac bites and dumplings COULD be eaten with bare hands, but it was a little awkward/messy, especially since we also didn't have individual plates to eat off of. And the shrimp for sure had to wait, and as a result was pretty cold by the time the waiter finally grabbed us some basic utensils that should have been on the table when we first sat down. There's just no excuse for that, and you're wasting your best products. Beyond that, if you literally have a type of alcohol in your name, the drinks should be above average and they're not. I had two Berry Patches, which were staggeringly different in every way except overall shoddy quality (though were nice to look at). The first tasted more like flavored water; I'm not even sure it had more than a quick splash of whiskey. Though unintentionally it helped deal with the lack of actual water that hadn't shown up at the table. The second one was super boozy and unmixed. I'd say stick with water if you come here, but you might not get one. Aside from some generic chains, this area really doesn't have a high-end happy hour-type place besides this one. If you go up 23, it's pretty much a wasteland and the next legit option west of 23 and north of 80 is probably Taphouse 15, which is about half an hour away. For whatever reason, Blu Alehouse does not seem interested in taking advantage of the lack of competition. Looking forward to my next mule at Taphouse though. read more

My SO and I finally made it to Blu Alehouse for date night, it had been on our list to visit. We were seated immediately and it was moderately busy for a weeknight. I didn't see any type of happy hour menu, nor were we informed of one, which I thought was a bit strange. The cocktails and beer selections were plentiful, we were both happy with the drinks we ordered. It took a while for service, but it's to be expected these days. Blu is a great spot! Been coming here since I moved nearby 10 years ago. They recently updated and the place looks great. My personal favorite is the pork chop w/ cherry peppers. We were parched and hungry after a (fairly simple) hike at the NJ Botanical Garden and this was a place that my local friend recommended. It is located right off the highway and honestly looks more of an up/middle scale restaurant (because we felt off coming in dressed as hikers). Despite our initial feelings of discomfort, which were later drowned out by the flights of beer, the staff was very welcoming! It is a fairly spacious place with both indoor and outdoor seating. We were there around 4pm on a Saturday and it was surprisingly pretty empty (more room for us!!). BUT let's get to the part worth speaking on which is my choice of entree. I ordered the Code Blu burger and yes, instead of wheat buns it comes with breaded friend mac n cheese buns!! MIND BLOWN! I love mac n cheese and these "buns" were definitely the star of the show. Such a unique burger - you need to try it at least once in your life (bucket list item). Although I will say that it is quite filling and almost impossible to finish in one sitting!! I also got a beer flight (and honestly do not remember what exact beers I got but they were all good). They have a huge selection of beers and other alcoholic beverages. We had an enjoyable lunch. If they did just a couple things better easily could have been 4 stars. I had the steak sandwich and my fiancé the blu burger. Both ordered medium well and both cooked VERY well. Overcooked and dry. The steak was tender though and I liked how it was served if only cooked right. Save for burger. I know these are sandwiches and not $40 steaks but if you ask how we want it cooked.....also we ordered onion rings and they forget about them so by the time they brought them out (after asking) we were half done. My mom loved her quesadilla and it looked really fresh. Server was friendly and ok but never really checked in. Needed to chase her for a soda refill. The other day, on a whim, Wifey and I decided to stop at Blu Alehouse for some lunch. It was a Saturday and past the normal lunch rush so we were seated right away. We had barely gotten in our seats when the waiter was asking if we were ready for a drink order (no). When he came back Wifey ordered a Victory Twisted Monkey and the Fish tacos w grilled mahi. I ordered The Don (pan seared chicken, sweet italian sausage, cherry peppers, mushrooms, onions, garlic; tossed with rice instead of orecchiette pasta in a chicken Demi) and a Jersey girl (don't remember which one it was). So neither of us liked our beers...but that's not their fault. They have a great beer menu and a full bar but we chose poorly. I will say that I think they offer WAY too many IPAs, but they do have a decent selection of other tap and bottle beer. While our bets were a miss our meals were not. Wifey loved her fish tacos (you get two) and actually deconstructed the second one and left the tortilla. My meal was excellent...perhaps a little rich and heavy for a hot spring or summer day, but awesome nonetheless. And very filling too. This place looks like a lot of fun, lots of tvs? So far I've only ordered delivery from Blu Alehouse and the food has been pretty good. They have good variety in their menu, delivery has always been prompt and the food has always been pretty good (not amazing, but slightly better than an Applebee's). I'll probably still continue to order from here and try out different menu items since my guess is that some dishes are a hit and others not so much. Also looking forward to actually dining in and checking out this bar in-person sometime soon since they seem to have a cool ambiance. read more

The Blu Ale House is a great place to get a quality meal with the family, or just to get some top-notch bar food with friends. It really is amazing how far their menu shines above all the other options for those two scenarios, and does so without being a book. Having gone to the Woodbridge location for a few company outings after work, and having ordered a little bit of almost everything on the appetizer menu -- Nothing come even remotely close to disappointing. It's ALL tasty and well prepared. Last night with the family of 5 (6 in you include the takeout for someone back home who couldn't join us) for a sit-down dinner at the Riverdale location was thoroughly enjoyable. Drinks were great, food was pretty awesome, and service (Zach) was attentive and on-point. But, again, what makes Blu Ale House a standout amongst ALL the rest of even the (next) best restaurants of its kind is the menu. If you cannot find something in the outstanding variety they offer -- I really don't know what you might be looking for! I like this place! They have a huge outdoor setup with heaters and it's pretty nice. You can make a reservation on OpenTable which is always a plus, it gets pretty busy here. The menu has your standard American bar food with some unique things thrown in such as a loaded potato wedge appetizer and fried cheesecake with strawberry topping for dessert (I recommend both.) My go-to drink there is the Apple Pie Sangria (seasonal) all you need is one and it gets you goooood. Also, reallyyy good spinach dip, maybe the best I've had. Service is hit or miss, my last time here it was good but the time before we could never find our server and most of the food came out cold/had to be sent back. It is a disgustingly dirty place. The food is mediocre at best. We asked for a medium well done burger and it was raw in the middle. And the slices of onions were bigger and thicker than the patty. The chicken skewers were 2 sticks with 5 cubes of chicken pieces. With just a romaine lettuce bed. Will never go back. The waitress cleans dishes and served food without any type of sanitation. We then placed an order for chili (no cheese), quesadillas and cauliflower bites. Asked for all items at the same time. When the order came, the chili was missing, it was never put into the system. While we waiting a fruit fly landed in my beer, I was given a replacement of the cider, without asking (I was drinking the wheat beer). The chili arrived with cheese. When it finally was served correctly it was luke warm at best. The quesadillas had maybe 3 diced pieces of chicken. Overall rating MEH. read more
