Top notch tiramisu that you can not miss when you visit Italy! They offer a tiramisu sampler of their four popular flavors that equal the price of two regular tiramisu's if you'd like to sample multiple but I would just stick with the traditional tiramisu and another one if you're adventurous because you get more bang for your buck. Tiramisù in a cardboard box! That carboard box labelled with POMPI (with a crown on top of the O) can be easily spotted all over Piazza di Spagna although authorities have been clamping down on people eating on the Spanish Steps. Everyone coming out of Via della Croce seemed to have one thing in common - that Pompi cardboard box. Pompi has been around since 1960 and several locations have started popping out in Rome. The original is in San Giovanni, but the one near the Spanish Steps was our destination. Since it was close to dinner time, we decided to go with the semi-frozen tiramisùs that could be eaten in about 40 minutes. We bought a couple of flavors to sample out - the Classico (classic) and the Banana e Cioccolato (banana and chocolate). Fragola (strawberry), Pistacchio (pistachio), and Nocciola (hazelnut) were also available at that time. If our hotel were nearby, we would have kept on coming back until we have tried them all. Our older daughter loves bananas so we had to try the banana and chocolate flavor. We've had that combination in the form of ice cream and it actually worked out well. Banana and peanut butter go hand in hand, but banana and dark chocolate are a handsome pair, too. The tiramisù version did not disappoint either. However, a taste of the classic flavor made me conclude that it is the reason why their logo wears a crown. The cocoa powder and the pieces of dark chocolate on top spelled a big difference. Both tiramisùs were light, rich, and flavorful. The ratio seemed to favor the mascarpone cream more than the savoiardi (ladyfingers), but they were tasty nonetheless. Tiramisù was the clear-cut specialty, but the Tiramisù Fragola gelato that I tried was delicious, too. It had a smooth texture with a rich and creamy strawberry taste. It was not part of the plan, but I guess the sight of those gelati as we entered the store was just too hard to resist. There are other options to have tiramisù, but Pompi offers the most convenient way to have it on the fly. For 4€, an order can be easily shared by two people. We are always encouraged to metaphorically think outside the box, but in this case, it's what literally is inside the box that matters... read more

I know that this place is famous for their tiramisu, but it was their gelato that won me over. It was one of my favorites of the embarrassingly large number of gelato places I tried on my trip to Rome. The pistachio and the ricotta/honey/walnut were both good enough that I got them again the second time I went. The tiramisu just didn't do it for me. It was a little bland and didn't taste that fresh. And it had a mousse-like texture rather than creamy, which I didn't care for. I consider Pompi both, overrated and overpriced. The famous Pasticceria and Gelato chain's best seller is their Tiramisu which they offer in different flavours : original, strawberry, mixed berries, pistachio, chocolate-banana. It is sold in little take away containers for 4€ per piece. Not only do they create an unbelievable amount of waste that way (all the bins around Spagna where full of Pompi Boxes), their service is also very impersonal and clearly targeted for mass-tourism. The Tiramisu itself was good (how could a pile of mascarpone and sugar not be good?) but I've definitely had better. I'd avoid it and look for smaller, more hidden places that are numerous in Rome! read more
