Well actually, I route myself accordingly, so that I can stop here and snatch up half of a grilled chicken... and a stuffed potato with carne on top - to go. Also, fyi - you cannot order at the drive up menu. You order at the window. I sat at the window for like 5 minutes, waiting for someone to take my order... cars were waiting, tummies were rumblin, I was growing impatient. Sure, they have a clearly posted sign that tells you this same information, but my hungry eyes don't read, they skim... The chicken is the truth. Moist. Flavorful. Amazing! For anyone who's familiar with El Pollo Loco, this is a similiar style (except a hell of a lot less "American") - chargrilled in the store, plus plenty of tortillas, beans, rice, delicious salsas (the green is the tastiest possible way to die of spicy-OD), and lots of fixins. There's nothing fancy, there's nothing flashy, nothing bells-and-whistley here at all. But if you want to get your grub on in a delicious, authentic, inexpensive way - well, these are the guys to go see. I'm not kidding about the green salsa, BTW. My first visit based on a coworker's recommendation. Mexican version of take-out chicken in a stand alone shack that might seat 12 comfortably. Ordered the 1/2 chicken meal (if the name has pollo you'd better order the chicken) for $7+tax including fountain drink. The bird is lightly coated (skin on) in a seasoning similar to bbq rub, charbroiled, cut into quarters and wrapped in butcher paper with half a roasted onion. The white meat was juicy, and all the meat was cooked to perfection. Served with spanish rice, charro beans, a tall stack of corn tortillas, 1/2 a lime, and a spicy avocado-green sauce (the color is avocado, but if it had any avocado there wasn't much). This is a boat-load of food. A word about the charros: these are some of the best tasting charro beans i've ever had, except that they needed to cook longer to soften up more. They were cooked with a lot of bacon and chicharron - so they aren't low-fat, but man they sure taste good. Keeping in mind the venue (take out Mexican chicken), I probably would rated them 5 stars had the beans been fully cooked. Definitely will eat here again. read more

While I see that many rave about this place, I have to say, that I just don't see it. I ordered a whole chicken. It was dry. Despite the apparent abundance of seasoning, it was pretty much bland. The one in Garland is better, but this place is good. I was REALLY craving carne asada, and saw they had a loaded baked potato with carne asada, and I had to get it. Along with a churro. For my craving, this really satisfied my tummy. The baked potato was big, and was LOADED, I just wish the potato was a little bit more buttered. Stopped by here this afternoon on the way home to pick up some chicken and this place never disappoints. All of the outlets in this chain are consistent with their food preparation and delivery and there is something in that green sauce that is heavenly. I ordered the fries and these are fresh cut deeply fried noodles of potato goodness and this is how FRY's used to be made before the horrible frozen stuff called Fries that we get everywhere. They grill the chicken with onions and the caramelized roasted onions with the chicken just created explosion of flavor in your mouth and that with the green sauce and a corn tortilla is as close as I'm going to get to heaven in Dallas. Extremely disappointed. Before I went to this place, I researched to see what restaurant made chicken that was close to El Pollo Loco's chicken in Los Angeles. Some people said this is the place to go, so I tried it out today. I went in there, the restaurant was like 100 degree inside. It was like an oven. The food smelled good and I thought I was in luck. So I ordered 1/2 chicken combo which did not come with any drinks. It costed me about 8.00 something. I got some chicken, beans and rice all prewrapped in 3 different containers. I thought this place supposed to serve fresh food? What the heck? So I tried the very hot chicken. It was dry, very dry and rubbery. It was also tasteless. I am glad that I didn't choke by their Chicken before I left. How can anyone say that this is comparable to El Pollo Loco? They must be 'loco' to say that! So it isn't wrapped up all pretty in a nice, neat little building package... but I noticed the drive thru line was long, plus BMW's and Hoopties alike were in the line. So I cut a U and hopped in it too. I ended up ordering chicken mole (Mole Poblano)... YUM-O. I've been wanting some more ever since. The chicken serving is small (2 very small pieces), but they give you darn near a bucket of mole which I'll TAKE! I poured it over rice in tortillas. El Pollo Regio is known for their excellent bbq chicken, but for something different, I ordered the carne asada stuffed spud on a weekday visit. The girl running the counter was prompt and cheery; she took my order without missing a stride, despite a very busy lunch line. What I received was a huge baker spud loaded with cheese, sour cream, butter and of course the beef! Paired with jalapenos and their signature green hot sauce, the Papa Regio made an excellent lunch (in truth, more spud than I ever expected) for $7 and some change. I'm a huge BBQ fan, and El Pollo Regio (The Royal Chicken) is BBQ chicken with a south of the border not Southern flair. I always come here to satisfy my chicken craving when going fried does not seem like the healthy option for the moment. I can tell the chicken has been in a smoker because of the lack of grill marks, but the smoke ring indicates time has been taken for proper industrial slow cooking. Come here and try menu option number 1 or 2 which is the signature chicken in whole (1) or half form (2). The complementary charro beans are cooked with pork belly in a tomato base, and they are very good as far as pinto beans are concerned (savory meat flavor with the tomato acid for a grease cutter). The complementary yellow Spanish rice is below average and tastes more like bland chicken flavored rice instead of the red rice most of us are used to. Additionally, they give you a whole smoked dry onion with chicken purchase. The onion makes for a nice, pickle like, substitute. The avocado green sauce is dairy creamy with a strong kick of garlic. This green sauce is good for dipping your tortillas or chicken. The salsa bar offers three types of tomato salsa, green sauce, red onion habanero chutney, and limes. Test the red onion habanero chutney with caution as it is very hot and could possibly ruin your meal. Moderation is the key. I strongly recommend coming during lunch or dinner as off hours can offer less than prime examples of dried out jerky chicken. The prices are fast food like, but the quality is more up to fair family dining. Great place to take your family or friends for a quick healthy meal minus the charro beans (pork fat = yummy = hell on your arteries). I commend El Pollo Regio on their consistency, for a newer franchise, as all of the locations don't differ in quality. read more

Parking is ok but you have to be aware of the traffic when going back onto Beltline road. It can be a busy intersection there. Staff has been friendly but I have only eaten in once. On many occasions I have passed Regio and noticed the best smelling smoke rising from the stack on top of this small restaurant. They use to be awesome but lately they've been slacking! I got a No. 8 Carne Asada, and when I got home, flipped open the box, there was hardly any carne asada in the tacos. The last few times I've been, it's been this way. Which I should have known not to go back but they are good. They charge an arm and a leg for tacos with no meat and a pinch of onion and cilantro.
